[SEPTEMBER 2024] Songsterr Tab for Weezer's "Can't Knock the Hustle" has been completed and uploaded, as per user request!

"Can't Knock the Hustle" is the opening track to Weezer's poppy self-titled LP from 2019, better known as the Black Album. This is personally one of my favorites from the album for its ghost-note-filled drumbeat, boppy bassline, ad-lib-filled backing vocals provided by Roberta Freeman, and general funk/Latin vibe which all around makes for a fun and bouncy song to listen to. I do not regularly listen to Black, and when I do, I usually just focus on this song and "I'm Just Being Honest" while skipping the rest most of the time. (Of course, the more I listen to the album, the more I inevitably grow to like the other tracks, but these two easily stand as my favorites from the LP.)

Tabbing out the track was not as difficult as I was expecting it to be, as the bassline and drumbeat—though complex in the grand scheme of Weezer songs—turned out to repeat from section to section for the most part, so once I determined one section, I could mostly copy-paste it for later sections, with small variations here and there. I was personally surprised by the lack of guitars in the song—its instrumental melody is primarily carried by the bass guitar and especially trumpets during the chorus, and although distorted and acoustic guitars are present, they usually serve to accent the other instruments rather than provide the driving melody themselves.

Robert Peapo “Peabo” Bryson (born April 13, 1951) is a singer and songwriter. He is known for singing soul ballads including “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love” with Roberta Flack. He has contributed to two Disney animated feature soundtracks. He is a winner of two Grammy Awards.

He was born in Greenville, South Carolina. He marked his professional debut at age 14, singing backup for Al Freeman and the Upsetters. It was Freeman’s difficulty in pronouncing his French West-Indian name, Peapo, that led him to perform as Peabo. He left home to tour the Chitlin’ Circuit with another local band, Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display. His first break came during a recording session at Atlanta’s Bang Records. He was signed to a contract as a writer, producer, and arranger and encouraged to perform his songs. He worked with hometown bands and wrote and produced for Bang. In 1976, he launched his recording career with “Underground Music” on the Bang label. His first album, Peabo, followed. Although only a regional success, he signed with Capitol Records in 1977.

His greatest solo hits include 1977’s “Feel the Fire” and “Reaching for the Sky”, 1978’s “I’m So into You” and “Crosswinds”, 1982’s “Let the Feeling Flow”, 1984’s “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again”, 1989’s “Show and Tell”, and the 1991 hit “Can You Stop the Rain”. In 1985, he appeared on One Life to Live to sing a lyrical version of its theme song. His vocals were added to the regular theme song in 1986 and his voice was heard daily until 1992. He recorded a successful album of romantic love duets with Roberta Flack (Born to Love). In partnership with Regina Belle, he recorded two hit duets: “Without You”, the love theme from the comedy film Leonard Part 6, recorded in 1987, and “A Whole New World”, recorded in 1992. Bryson and Belle recorded four duets over the years: “Without You” (in 1987), “I Can’t Imagine” (in 1991), “A Whole New World” (in 1992), and “Total Praise” (in 2009).

I think you would be the quiet loner or the funny sarcastic rebel probably a combination of the two. Either way you would be the cool snarky badass character that stands apart from the rest and always has the best one liners. Spends most of their time alone and other people might find them intimidating but once you get to know them they are actually incredibly kind and an extremely loyal friend. The character that the main character befriends and teaches them that other people are idiots and you shouldn’t care what they think. Or maybe the character that was once a villain but has been adopted by a group of heroesos they still have their villain side and enjoy getting into trouble every now and then but now they have a group of friends they care about and are protective over, they might not admit they are a big softy cause on the outside they are calm and cool but lord help anyone who tries to hurt their friends.

The Hunt for Red October (1990): Adaptation of Tom Clancy's book of the same name. Stars Sean Connery (Marko Ramias), Alec Baldwin (Jack Ryan), Scott Glenn (Bart Mancuso), James Earl Jones (James Greer), Sam Neill (Vasili Borodin), and also has several other actors I like. Since this is a Marvel blog, I will add that Stellan Skarsgard, the actor for Erik Selvig, is Tupolev. During the late Cold War, the Soviet Union built the Red October, a massive submarine built with new technology so that SONAR could not detect it. Ramias, captain of the Red October means to defect to the United States. Ryan, a CIA analyst, deduces this and has to prove his theory to the US Navy before it's too late.

Ocean's Eleven (2001): Remake of a 1960 film, Ocean's 11. Stars George Clooney (Danny Ocean), Brad Pitt (Rusty Ryan), Matt Damon (Linus Caldwell), Julia Roberts (Tess Ocean), and Andy Garcia (Terry Benedict). Again, Marvel blog, I'll let y'all know Don Cheadle is in it as Basher Tarr. Danny and Rusty plan a $160 million heist of a Vegas casino owned by Benedict, the lover of Danny's ex-wife Tess. They assemble a team to steal the casino's money

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016): Adaptation of the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. Stars Sam Neill (Hector or Hec), Julian Dennison (Ricky Baker), Rima Te Wiata (Bella), and Rachel House (Paula). Again, Marvel blog, so I'll tell you it's directed by Taika Waititi. So he has a cameo in it that is hilarious. Hec and his foster son, Ricky, don't get along all that well. After a crazy turn of events leaving Ricky and Hec stranded in the New Zealand bush for a couple weeks before social services were supposed to pick up Ricky, the authorities assume Hec kidnapped Ricky. The two live on the run in the bush and grow close. It's a Waititi movie, meaning that it is a comedy used to discuss a more serious topic, in this case chosen families. It is hilarious and had me laughing so much when I watched it.

Invictus (2009): Based on John Carlin's book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and The Game That Made a Nation, which is in turn based on real life events in South Africa. Stars Morgan Freeman (Nelson Mandela) and Matt Damon (Francois Pienaar). It is shortly after apartheid and Mandela's election as president. There are lots of racial tensions in South Africa and Mandela wants to find a way to unite the country. Mandela decides to help the national rugby team win the 1995 Rugby World Cup in order to create something both whites and blacks can agree on and hope for together.

The Sixth Sense (1999): Stars Bruce Willis (Malcom Crowe) and Haley Joe Osment (Cole Sear). Malcom Crowe is a child psychologist trying to help Cole. Malcom eventually learns something supernatural is happening. Can't say too much, I don't want to spoil it since it blew me away.

Hatari! (1962): Swahili for "danger." Stars John Wayne (Sean Mercer) and Elsa Martinelli (Dallas). Sean and several others are professional game catchers in Africa. Dallas, a photographer, shows up unannounced. A series of funny events happens afterwards.

Swiss Family Robinson (1960): Based on Johann David Wyss's book The Swiss Family Robinson. Starring Johann Mills (Father Robinson), Dorothy McGuire (Mother Robinson), James MacArthur (Fritz Robinson), Tommy Kirk (Ernst Robinson), Kevin Corcoran (Francis Robinson), and Janet Munro (Roberta). A Swiss family is on a boat to New Guinea when pirates attack and the ship flees into a storm. They shipwreck not far off from an island. They have to build a life for themselves on the island and learn to love the island. But they have to be careful - the pirates are still out there.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959): Based on Herminie Templeton Kavanagh's Darby O'Gill stories. Stars Albert Sharpe (Darby O'Gill), Janet Munro (Katie O'Gill), Sean Connery (Michal McBride), and Jimmy O'Dea (King Brian). Darby captures King Brian, king of the Little People, who grants Darby three wishes. At the same time, Darby's landlord sent Michael to live in the townhouse and expected Darby to move elsewhere that required less maintenance now that Darby is old. Katie and Michael start to fall in love.

Roberta: And I remember one particular thing that... I've never said this in an interview before, because, you know, it could keep me from work, from getting work, for saying this. But I think now is the time to speak out against injustice. At the time we were on tour with Metallica, and James [Hetfield], Slash and Axl were talking. I remember passing them in... I don’t remember where it was, but it was some outdoor venue, and they were in an area and I had to pass them to get to my dressing room. And I heard James say about Ice T - because Ice T was supposed to join us on the tour – and he said, “I don’t wanna share my stage with a n-word.” And I was like, “What did he say?!” - you know, like, I couldn’t believe my ears. And Axl was just like, you know, “It’s my show” – I don’t remember what he said, I mean that was such a long time ago and I think my whole brain was clouded with such anger that I just kind of blacked out, you know, I just saw red.

Brando: I understand. Did he say “that...”, or did he say “a...”?

Roberta: “I’m not sharing my stage with a... n-word.”

How come you don't like rap, then?

"Rap is just to me very annoying. Bunk Bunk y'know like wow, f– man. It really strikes something in my head that I've just got to get away from. Just the fact that it's extra-black too – blacks, y'know, we want everything, we deserve it, give it to us, you f–ed us this and that, and that kind of shit. It's all me me me and my name in this song, y'know …?"

Ironic that, James Hetfield hates rap for the same reason many people hate Metal – because he knows f– all about it.

Last year in Britain’s ‘New Musical Express,’ you described rap music as “extra-black” and said that it was “all me me me and my name in this song.” How about elaborating on that? They say a lot of “I’m this, I’m doin’ this, you gotta do this with me.” It’s not my cup of tea. Some of the stuff, like Body Count, our fans like it because there’s aggression there. I love that part of it. But the “Cop Killer” thing, kill whitey – I mean, what the fuck? I don’t dig it.

Some of it makes me think that they just want shock value. They want people to pay attention. It reminds me of some of the death metal, the Slayer thing with Satan and tear-your-baby-up. Like going out and shooting cops. Hopefully, no one’s going to go out and do either.

People like it, it’s fine. Whatever blows your skirt up, as my dad would say. It just don’t blow mine up.

1993 Rolling Stones interview.

"It's a joke, right?" James Hetfield is asking about Perry Farrell and Ice-T's cover of "Don't Call Me N——, Whitey" by Sly Stone. "'Cause that Perry guy is pretty open minded."

The subject came up when I asked Hetfield about a "rap" he once recorded with lyrics that you'd never accuse of being open-minded. "Rap was just starting, and I did a parody that had the N word—but you can't say n—— especially whitey." The title of the rap was simply "N——". So the lyricist, singer, and riffmeister who accounts for 60 percent of Metallica's sound is a bigot, is that it? Not exactly. After all, Lloyd Grant, Metallica's original lead guitarist before Dave Mustaine, was black.

But Hetfield is definitely, along with hunting partner Jim Martin (Faith No More), a would-be good ol' boy, a... "Go ahead and say it," he roars. "Redneck!!" With his thick build, squeezed into jeans and cowboy boots, he certaintly looks it. That his father was a Nebraska-born trucker since retired to Arkansas gives the image legitimacy—as does Hetfield's own interest in Lynyrd Skynyrd and hunting. Hetfield himself is animal-like—what you'd call a bear of a man if the blond Fu Manchu mustache didn't lend his face a leonine look.

I was warned he'd kill me if I asked him about the rap—or about the bowie knife his father passed on to him which had allegedly been used to kill a black man. He does freak when I bring up the knife ("That's not true!" he stammers unconvincingly), but otherwise he's disarmingly friendly and surprisingly open about his love of "titty bars" and the epic Jägermeister binge that almost killed him and Ulrich.

Intimacies by Katie Kitamura

A lot of people on twitter have been exposing James Hetfield's racism. Have you heard about his racism? If so, what are your thoughts?

Okay so I knew nothing about this since I’d been pretty inactive on twitter lately! But ignorance isn’t excuse and I did some digging. For the uninitiated, this is what I found:

1. Video of him saying the n-word.

2. Video of him using insensitive language towards Asian people, getting called out for it, and not giving a shit.

3. Roberta Freeman (backup vocalist for GN’R on the UYI tours) alleged that James used the n-word when referring to Ice T.

4. Videos of James and Jason acting like goose stepping motherfuckers and using Nazi salutes.

5. This picture of him Nazi saluting with Lars.

My thoughts? Gross. Bad. Inexcusable.

I’m disgusted by all of it, without a doubt. But as somebody who isn’t a part of the groups directly affected by this kind of language/actions, I think my opinion isn’t as important to hear as the POC in the rock/metal community though. So I’d rather listen than speak rn, if that makes sense.
