La La Land (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
The movie musical La La Land is set in the modern day, but with the aesthetics of the 1950s. The PattyCake guys decided to lean even further into the trappings of Hollywood's golden age to evoke the stars of the early 20th century in their most iconic roles, as well as the many folks behind the scenes who help make the magic happen. They didn't quite have a cast of thousands, as was often boasted by the epic films of the era, but they did gather quite the crowd of performers, mostly from among their circle of theme park friends.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals — La La Land (Classic Edition)
performers: Olivia Adkins (Marilyn Monroe); Rachel Copeland-Evans (Judy Garland); Monica Carlile Edwards (Audrey Hepburn); Felix Deneau (Humphrey Bogart); Erin Cline (Bette Davis); Derek Ostrem (James Dean); Colleen Ella Defeo (Gloria Swanson / Elsa Lanchester); Bebe Caliberr Mercy (Elizabeth Taylor); Elijah Babel (Charlie Chaplin); Jack Defeo (Boris Karloff); T. Robert Pigott, David Kotary, & Jacob McAlister (directors); Amy Garton (wardrobe); Hannah Laird (script supervisor); Jaimz Dillman (reporter); Greg Hernandez (lighting grip); Melanie Simpson (ingenue); Jim Harrison (camera loader); E. Michael Evans (leading man); Jonathan Shane Ferrell (makeup artist); Laura Mansoori & Alex Colvin (showgirls); Deanna Quintero (hairdresser); Brayshawna Bates (flapper starlet)
original songs / performers: "Another Day of Sun", "Someone in the Crowd", and "City of Stars" by the cast of La La Land (2016)
written by: all songs by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, & Justin Paul
arranged by: Paul Vesco, Layne Stein, & Tony Wakim
release date: 22 July 2017
My favorite bits:
that brief Flectcher cameo 🐶
Olivia's perfectly breathy Marilyn voice
the contrast of having "Another Day of Sun" mostly led by the stars while "Someone In the Crowd" is mostly the crew
the instrumentation adding more jaunty piano to accompany Chaplin's dancing
the film clip interlude that includes "Will.of.Oz" footage, then turns back into live performance
gradually building rhythmic and harmonic complexity until they reach the final unison line

Trivia:
Rachel had first worn the blue gingham dress as Dorothy Gale in PattyCake's "Will.of.Oz" music video, which was released the previous December.
Olivia was already well versed in Marilyn Monroe's mannerisms, since she is a character she'd been playing for several years at Universal Studios Orlando (and has continued playing since).
Felix often works as a Dean Martin impersonator, but stepping into Bogey's trenchcoat and fedora for the day suited him, too.
Derek is one of Tony's fellow "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni, having played both Wolfman and Dracula for the last decade of the show's run. (He's also married to Stephanie Trilli, who has played Sarah Sanderson in PattyCake's "Hocus Pocus" pieces.)
Robby was also one of the many Draculas in the "Beetlejuice Revue", and he's been playing Marlin in the Disney World "Nemo" live show for over a decade. (Among many, many theme park and theater roles.)
Makeup artist Jonathan Shane Ferrell of Makeup & Creative Arts was actually applying the Frankenstein makeup to Jack Defeo's face while also playing legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce, who worked with Karloff on the 1931 film. Jonathan had been a makeup artist for the "Beetlejuice Revue" at the end of its run.
Jack and Colleen were also already comfortable in the monster makeup, as they are yet more "Beetlejuice Revue" alumni, having played Frankenstein and the Bride in the 90s and early 2000s.
The PattyCake guys created a bit of anticipation with a social media countdown.

They were very specific about recreating several famous celebrity photos and iconic movie moments. They highlighted some of them in a series of social media posts they called "Double Takes".

Thoughts on 10.04, no spoilers.
As expected, a mostly fun treasure hunt romp, reminiscent of the 100th episode, which starred Nathan Lane. I say mostly, because this one had a distinctly more tragic aspect to it.
I don't believe Red's real interest here is the money, it never is with the treasure hunts. He just likes the experience.
He seems to be on a bucket list journey, which not surprisingly would include another treasure hunt with Robert vesco. He also seems to be lining up players for some giant end gambit, reminding me a bit of earlier seasons where he seemed to have a long-term goal to accomplish. I wonder if the final scene is part of that, or was this as genuine as it seemed.
I'm getting a little frustrated with Dembe not having more interaction with Red. I would expect him to be cluing in that something is up with Red, but instead we have Cooper casually noting the things that are off, but not taking it seriously.
I hope it's just early in the season for that to be happening. To me the relationships between Red and each of the remaining long-term characters, including Agnes, are the heart of the show, especially with Dembe. And so far we're avoiding the heart. Except for Reds own heart, which seems a little sad. It's noticeable now even when he's bent on having a fun time.

June of 2022 meet Mar/Apr of 2023. 🤗
Red: I doubt we’ve heard the last of Robert Vesco. Who knows? If I get bored, maybe I’ll break him out. I’d love to best him one last time.
I’m gonna laugh if Wujing breaks Vesco out of prison. He and Red together could best Wujing and the entire list. Vesco would make a really good mole.

I am SO enjoying this episode where the Mastermind times the heist to a live classical music performance and calls the cues according to the musical score! Pity that it almost goes wrong because one of the crew gets lost listening to the music.
Oh, you thought I was watching the Scheherazade Job? Nope. Blacklist “Robert Vesco.” The Mastermind was Ray’s mentor (the titular Vasco) and the performance was Barber of Seville. The heist wasn’t nearly as impressive, but the music wasn’t cut to shit either.

For some reason, I think they're choosing smaller blacklisters and saving one big one for after Wujing gets killed off. So he enlists The Freelancer, The Troll Farmer, Dr. Laken Perillos, and Robert Vesco. I mean... The Freelance was taken down in the second episode of the series, and Wujing was taken down in the third, so I don’t consider either of them all that powerful. Not good to underestimate the enemy, but still... they’re small in comparison to big bad material. I’m thinking a blacklister so big, they don’t need to align themselves with Wujing to take out Red. Of everyone on the blacklist, only three of them strike me as powerful enough to take Red out without the need for Wujing.
The OUC, Constantin Rostov, and Scottie - Solomon - The Artax Network.
More so because I believe Wujing will be taken out by the midseason.

Thoughts on 10.6, no spoilers.
I have conflicted feelings about this one. A Dembe feature but also.... Not? I feel like it didn't really advance anything for Dembe. It felt more like an action feature for Dembe, rather than a character feature. I have been craving a deeply meaningful conversation between Red and Dembe, and, well.... We're still early in the season.
I did very much enjoy the call backs to Dembe's language skills.
In terms of character features it was much more about the guest stars. I have to admit, Cox put in a very fine performance. And the Robert Vesco stuff was the highlight of the episode for me.
Overall a rather dark and serious episode. But I'm not sure we traveled very far. Not that we need to, I don't require plot advancement every single episode. But without that, that leaves character, and I'm left wanting with Dembe's character development.
Interesting moment with Ressler at the end. That was a very level-headed thing he said, something I think Liz would approve of. But I've been feeling like they're going to set him up against Reddington by the end of the season. So I guess they'll have to move him pretty far from this point.
What was Reddington arguing about over the phone? I know we've been watching him seemingly set up some kind of residence, but I've had it in my head that this is just some kind of decoy residence for him to blow up with all the bad guys in it at the end. Why would he care?
