President Barchi rightly noted that the controversies facing the three members of his faculty staff originated with exposés published by The Algemeiner – but his goal wasn’t to offer a vote of thanks to Shiri Moshe, our reputable journalist who brought these vital issues to the public attention. His intention was clearly to disparage, undermine and delegitimize. And on what basis? On the basis that the reports had originated in a Jewish newspaper.

He referred to The Algemeiner, incorrectly, as “a blog out of New York, which is the follow-on to what was a Yiddish-language newspaper that folded 10 years ago.” And then, later in his speech, he advised students to “keep in mind when you hear things and those things get picked up by another newspaper, there is very often a back-story to it.”

“Trace it back to where it’s coming from and ask why is it coming from there and what’s going on,” he insisted, “and you may often get a little different perspective on those happenings.”

In fact – shamefully — Barchi spent more time praising the employees in question than he did explaining to students why their views are deeply problematic. He celebrated Puar as “a well-respected scholar.” He lauded Chikindas’ teaching record as “actually very strong,” and he defended Adi ­– who was a spokesman for the Syrian regime’s UN mission in 2014, when Assad first used illegal chemical weapons– as having “not said or done anything in his academic life here that would be actionable.

Rutgers’ president, Robert Barchi decided to use that tried and true tactic of shooting the messenger. He is comfortable with his Jew hating professors though.

Thank you for your response to my question about why you jumped ships. I have seen some former Rinas that are now Portwell shippers I am always curious why they jump ships. I totally agree with you ship whatever you want to ship and that makes you happy just don’t start ship wars with others. The thing I like about Portwell is how chill most of the fandom is compare to Rinas 90% of them are toxic on Twitter that like to start ship wars. I never shipped Rina but I can see why some people like it.

You know it's funny because I rarely change my mind when it comes to my ships. I'm usually the type to wait it out through thick and thin (ex. Barchie, Seddie, Catradora, Harry x Hermione, Rob x Rae, Bamon, Stelena, Huma etc) so I'm willing to wait for my ships to sail (if they ever do) 😅 With Rina, I can absolutely see the appeal in S1 because we as the audience got to see a different side to both characters when they started spending more time together (1.05-1.10). But as S2 progressed, I could see how much Gina was hurting while pining after Ricky (2.01-2.06). While the 2.06 flashback made some ship Rina more, it did the complete opposite in my case. 😂 From my experience, having been on both sides of the fandom, I totally agree some Rinas tend to be more toxic on Twitter than the other platforms. Portwells can be toxic too, but most of us are just chilling, enjoying Gina and EJs story unfold. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I can also understand some Rinas' frustration when a Rini stan also happens to "ship" Portwell because it seems like it gets Gina outta the way of their ship. However, from what I've observed, the majority of Portwells either used to ship Rina (like me) or feel indifferent to Rini. Judging from some of the reactions I've seen on YouTube, many fans generally have Portwell as their favorite ship currently, simply because their story has been the highlight of S2. 😁 But either way, people are allowed to ship whatever makes them happy, as long as they're not contributing to the toxicity in the fandom. ❤

Ok where do I even start? Why would Archie and Betty sing not 1, not 2, but 3 songs indicating they have some sort of intense repressed feelings for each other last ep just to go back on it a min later? Meanwhile what Cheryl said makes no sense but I'll get to Robert M in a sec. Why would Barchie kiss bc they're afraid of change or whatever Betty Boop tried to say. Like what's changing? You've been dating the same person for years and you prob plan on doing so through college. Bc they feel safe w each other? I think w Jughead and Veronica is where they go when they want to feel safe from change...isn't that exactly what they're doing? Ignoring these feelings that keep coming up so they can go back to what feels safe to them...Jughead and Veronica? And why are some people trying to act like Betty is more redeemable than Archie? Bc Cheryl happened to give her an explanation to rationalize and justify ignoring her feelings for Archie? Archie is prob confused by her sudden change of heart bc they seemed to be on the same page before she talked to Cheryl. But as usual, Betty is just trying to do what will hurt the least people in spite of her own feelings. The effects of being raised by Alice! I mean, they did the same thing though so you can't say Veronica deserves better than Archie without also saying that Jughead deserves better than Betty just bc u ship bughead. Plus what's their solution now? To avoid each other? And Betty will use another mystery to distract herself even though they make her miserable and remind her of her "darkness" but it's ok bc she's back to being an investigative duo w jughead! Can't their relationship function without having a case to solve or what? And isn't Nughead gonna ask why she was against the case but is now interested all of a sudden? I guess not bc he's too busy telling Betty all about his day solving the case while having no idea or interest about what she's been doing!

On to Cheryl. Everyone is saying she's logical this ep but I can't say I agree. First of all, when did Betty ask her opinion on her feelings or what she should do? Also, how does she even know the extent of Betty's feelings anyway? Funny of her to try and mansplain the difference between a fantasy relationship and a real one when her relationship w Toni is basically a fantasy contingent on Toni's complete passivity and compliance. Cheryl doesn't know what it takes to make a real relationship work bc if Toni brings up any grievance w her, she'll get defensive and play the victim, maybe even threaten to kick Toni out of her house or bully her out of school! Couple goals! Plus isn't she Veronica's friend? You know, the only person who was there for her in season 1? Yet she knows Betty is possibly cheating w Veronica's boyfriend and doesn't plan to tell her or at the very least show any concern for how all this will affect Veronica. Instead, it's like a joke or something scandalous and juicy to mess around with. And I get they're cousins but let's be real...they're not really friends...meaning that Betty only really goes to her when she needs something and she kind of kept a copy of Clifford shooting Jason, despite Cheryl asking her not to, which is now apparently circulating in a snuff film ring so idk...if I were Cheryl, I wouldn't be super concerned w Betty or her love life. But she basically made it a point to value Betty's feelings over Veronica's bc by keeping the secret, she is implying that while Betty is allowed to sort out her feelings and decide if she wants to be w Jughead or Archie, Veronica isn't allowed that same choice or freedom to decide if she wants to be with Archie despite him having feelings for Betty. Plus she quit the rum business bc it wasn't "fun" anymore after someone almost hurt Penelope...the fuck? Since when does Cheryl not think Penelope is a monster anymore? This show is just obsessed w kids having endless forgiveness for their toxic parents.

That brings me to Hiram. Sadly, he was right that a Lodge would never be accepted in Riverdale or whatever he said before since Archie, Kevin, and now Cheryl have all shown they will be loyal to Betty in spite of how it will affect Veronica, and it's not like it has to be a competition but practically no one has considered Veronica's feelings throughout this whole ordeal. Who are her friends in this town? Kevin stopped talking to her after season 1 bc the writers decided he was only allowed to be friends w Betty, Cheryl isn't really there for her and lies to her to protect Betty without the least bit of conflicting feelings about it, Reggie started ignoring her after she rejected him, Archie (who has been previously loyal and supportive) seems exhausted by their relationship and even somewhat resentful, and even Betty (who Veronica referred to as her "bestie" just a few eps ago to Katy Keene) doesn't talk to her except to ask for money. So is it really a surprise she keeps crawling back to Hiram? He's the only person who even shows interest in her day at this point! And she's obviously desperate to get his approval. It's just sad bc she came to Riverdale to start over and prove that she can be a better person and break from her family's toxic cycle. But even after consistently being there for people like Betty, Archie, and Cheryl, they still don't seem to have the same love or loyalty for her as they have for each other bc they all grew up together. They barely even have any pics of her in their rooms compared to each other. I guess it's good that she never fully broke away from her family bc then she'd be even more dependent on Archie and where would she be after he cheats on her with Betty and everyone values Betty's feelings over it more than hers? Guess she'd be alone! Also, why couldn't Hiram just actually change at this point? Like I know it's not realistic but imagine how tired we are...imagine how tired we are of it. But jk instead it's just another person lying to Veronica! Now literally everyone is!

The worst part though was legit the actual plot. Like is something wrong w this writer bc why the fuck did they make Ethel purchase a sex tape of Bughead that she kept in her house? That's literally child porn. And snuff films? And tickle porn? And they try to excuse it by saying it's not sexual...ok so I guess every time dan schneider shows a foot on tv it's not sexual bc it's just a foot? Like obv the implication is that someone is getting turned on by the tickle vids and that it's like a fetish. The fuck kind of teen show is this? Back in my day, the worst thing people did was cheat and do drugs...and yet those types of plots get more hate than the principal hoarding a fucking snuff film! F them also for making Mr. Honey evil. Like he was my homegirl and the only one making sense...now all the beasts can feel justified in their actions instead of taking accountability for doing something stupid like tickle porn...and they can take revenge on him (why is this show obsessed w revenge?) bc Mr. Honey ruined their senior yr! Idk I think their rotten parents are more to blame for ruining their lives than Mr. Honey! Jk tho bc he is evil! Is Charles evil too? So sick of her. I got nothing else to say so shut up! In honour of the ending of the series Game of Thrones, I will be listing the most popular Riverdale couples as the Game Of Thrones Houses! 

#1. Jeronica (Jughead Jones & Veronica Lodge; Game Of Thrones House: HOUSE STARK)

House Stark 

House Stark of Winterfell is one of the Great Houses of Westeros and the principal noble house of the north. In days of old they ruled as Kings of Winter, but since Aegon's Conquest they have been Wardens of the North and ruled as Lords of Winterfell. Their seat, Winterfell, is an ancient castle renowned for its strength. Their sigil is a grey direwolf racing across a field of white. House Targaryen

House Targaryen of King's Landing is a Great House of Westerosand the current Royal House of the Seven Kingdoms. House Targaryen conquered and unified the realm before it was deposed during Robert's Rebellion and House Baratheon replaced it as the new royal House. The two surviving Targaryens fled into exile to the Free Cities of Essos across the Narrow Sea. House Lannisterreplaced House Baratheon as the royal House following the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor, but the realm was reconquered by Daenerys Targaryen, retaking the Iron Thronefollowing the Battle of King's Landing. House Targaryen's sigil is a three-headed red dragon on a black background, and their house words are "Fire and Blood."Once a noble family of the vast Valyrian Freehold, an empire spanning most of the eastern continent, the Targaryens were given control of the island of Dragonstone in the Narrow Sea some centuries ago. After the obliteration of Valyria in the Doom, the Targaryens launched a devastating invasion of Westeros using three dragons to spearhead their attack. In a short period of time, six of the seven formerly independent kingdoms had surrendered to the Targaryen leader, King Aegon I, unifying the continent under his rule. Unknown to most, however, Rhaegar had his marriage with Elia Martell annulled and remarried Lyanna, with whom he also had a son, Jon Snow. As Lyanna lay dying after giving birth to her son, she pleaded with her brother Eddard to keep her baby safe from Robert, who surely would want the baby dead due to his immense hatred for Rhaegar and promise to wipe out the Targaryen bloodline. She reveals her son's name is 'Aegon Targaryen'.[2] To protect his sister's son from Robert, Eddard takes his infant nephew back with him to Winterfell, names him 'Jon',[3]and claims him as his illegitimate son, raising Jon as his own child alongside his trueborn children.[1] The child would become Jon Snow and grows up with the maternal side of his family.Generations of compound inbreeding have preserved in the Targaryen bloodline the classic Valyrian features of silver-white (platinum blonde) hair, and very fair, pale skin. Allegedly, this also preserved in their bloodline the ability to successfully bond with and ride dragons. They also seem to be somewhat more tolerant of extreme heat and high temperatures than other people, though they are by no means invulnerable to fire – or at least, not all of them. Unfortunately, some believe that this practice of inbreeding has also caused the trait of insanity to plague House Targaryen; though some members are known to be perfectly normal psychologically-speaking, other Targaryens throughout history have displayed bizarre, erratic and sometimes violent behavior, succumbing to the so-called 'Targaryen madness'.

House Baratheon

House Baratheon of Storm's End is one of the Great Houses of Westeros, and is the principal house in the stormlands, which they rule as Lords Paramount of the Stormlands. Their seat, Storm's End, is an ancient castle raised by the Storm Kings from the now-extinct House Durrandon. The Baratheon sigil is a crowned black stag on a field of gold.[1] Members of the family tend to be tall and powerfully built, with black hair and blue eyes, as well as strong, square jawlines. They are known for their mercurial tempers, and their words are "Ours is the Fury".After Robert's Rebellion, House Baratheon split into three branches: Lord Robert Baratheon was crowned king and took residence at King's Landing, thereby creating House Baratheon of King's Landing. #4. Varchie (Archie Andrews & Veronica Lodge; Game Of Thrones House: HOUSE LANNISTER)

House Lannister

House Lannister of Casterly Rock is one of the Great Houses of Westeros, one of its richest and most powerful families and oldest dynasties. It was also the royal house of the Seven Kingdomsfollowing the extinction of House Baratheon of King's Landing, which had been their puppet house during the War of the Five Kings, for a brief stint of time until House Targaryen took back the Iron Throne in Daenerys Targaryen's war for Westeros. The Lannisters rule over the Westerlands. Their seat is Casterly Rock, a massive rocky promontory overlooking the Sunset Sea which has had habitations and fortifications built into it over the millennia. They are the Lords Paramount of the Westerlands and Wardens of the West. As the new royal house, they also ruled directly over the Crownlands from their seat of the Red Keep in King's Landing, the traditional seat of the royal family. House Lannister's Heraldry consists of a golden lion on a crimson background, and their House words are "Hear me roar!", which are rarely mentioned.[1] Their unofficial motto, which is as well known as the official one, is "A Lannister always pays his debts" - which is used much more often and mostly in negative context, though it can also be used in the original, literal sense. The incestuous relationship of Cersei and Jaime had been concealed in a conspiracy. The Lannisters continued to hold sway when Tommen Baratheon ascended the throne, with Kevan Lannister as Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm, but lost their hold over Tommen to the Faith of the Seven, and, after destroying the Great Sept of Baelor, Cersei took the throne. With the deaths of Cersei and Jaime at the Battle of King's Landing, Tyrion is now presumably the head of House Lannister.

House Tyrell of Highgarden is an extinct Great House of Westeros. House Bolton of the Dreadfort is an extinct Great House from the North. House Martell of Sunspear is a legally extinct Great House of Westeros. It ruled the peninsula of Dorne in the far south of the continent from their castle Sunspear. Though loyal to the Iron Throne, the Martells were never conquered by the Targaryens and pursued a more isolated role in wider political events since Robert's Rebellion. House Martell's sigil is a red sun pierced by a golden spear, on an orange field, a combination of the original Martell sigil - a yellow spear - and the emblem of Princess Nymeria - a red sun - to symbolize the marriage of the warrior-queen to Mors Martell. Their house words are "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken." With the assassinations of Prince Doran Martell and his only heir, Prince Trystane, by Ellaria Sand and the three eldest Sand Snakes, House Martell is legally extinct, although the Sand Snakes carry Martell blood through their father Oberyn Martell. The Sand Snakes also continue to use the Martell sigil to represent themselves and Dorne.[1] Under the leadership of Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes, the forces of House Martell and Dorne have aligned to support the cause of Daenerys Targaryen against House Lannister after they declared war against them. Since the deaths of the older Sand Snakes and Ellaria's imprisonment in King's Landing, House Martell's future is uncertain as five Sand Snakes still live.

House Arryn

House Arryn of the Eyrie is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. It has ruled over the Vale of Arryn for millennia, originally as the Kings of Mountain and Vale and more recently as Defenders of the Vale and Wardens of the East under the Targaryen, Baratheon, and Lannister dynasties. The nominal head of House Arryn is Robin Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie, with Yohn Royce holding actual power over the house. Their lands are in the central-eastern region of the continent. Their seat is the Eyrie, ancestral seat of the Mountain Kings. House Arryn's sigil is a white crescent moon and falcon on a blue field. Their house words are "As High as Honor." At the start of the series, Lord Jon Arryn was killed under suspicious circumstances. His widow Lysa blamed House Lannister and sought refuge in the Eyrie. Despite her enmity towards the Lannisters, she remained neutral in the War of the Five Kings and aimed to use the forces of the Vale to defend Robin and the Eyrie if necessary. After killing Lysa and making it appear like an accident, Lord Petyr Baelish becomes Lord Protector of the Vale until young Robin comes of age. Under his rule, supervised by Baelish, the Vale assists House Stark in toppling House Bolton in the North during the Battle of the Bastards. After the battle, the Vale declares for House Stark and becomes part of the Kingdom of the North in defiance of the Iron Throne, though they later return to the jurisdiction of their historic rulers, House Targaryen, after Jon Snow bends the knee to Daenerys Targaryen.

House Tully

House Tully of Riverrun is a deposed Great House of Westeros. Its most senior member carried the title of Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident, until the Red Wedding. The current head is Lord Edmure Tully, son of the late Hoster Tully. The Tully sigil is a silver trout on a red and blue background. Their house words are "Family, Duty, Honor." At the onset of the War of the Five Kings, House Tully came under attack by House Lannister and lent its support for House Starkwhen they came to their aid in the liberation of the Riverlands. House Tully has since been formally stripped of lands and titles for rebellion against the Iron Throne, with Lord Edmure a captive of House Frey following the Red Wedding. Later, Ser Brynden Tully gathered the remaining Tully forces and reclaimed Riverrun from the Freys, reopening conflict between the Tullys and the Iron Throne. The Freys lay siege to Riverrun, and were later assisted by the Lannisters on the orders of King Tommen I. Ser Jaime Lannister managed to end the siege by convincing Edmure Tully to command the garrison to lay down their weapons in return for clemency and protection. Brynden was killed during a final stand with Lannister and Frey forces while Edmure was returned to the Freys as a prisoner.

House Greyjoy

House Greyjoy of Pyke is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. It rules over the Iron Islands, a harsh and bleak collection of islands off the west coast of Westeros, from the castle at Pyke. The head of the house is the Lord Reaper of Pyke. House Greyjoy's sigil is traditionally a golden kraken on a black field. During Daenerys Targaryen's war for Westeros, Euron allied with Cersei of House Lannister, while Yara and her followers allied with Daenerys Targaryen, who Euron originally intended to ally with. After being set free by Theon, Yara retook the Iron Islands in Daenerys's name. Theon died at the Battle of Ice and Fire while Euron died at the Battle of King's Landing, leaving Yara firmly as the head and last living member of House Greyjoy.

Rutgers University professors complained to their school president after campus police arrested a suspected illegal alien for driving under the influence (DUI) and then allowed Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain him.

More than 100 Rutgers faculty members penned a letter to the university’s president, Robert L. Barchi, expressing their displeasure with the treatment of a man named Luis Alberto Lopez , The Daily Targum reported. Signatories included history professor James Livingston, who, in a post about children playing at a restaurant he frequented, called them “little Caucasian assholes” “slid[ing] around the floor.”

Rutgers police approached Lopez’s vehicle on Sept. 29 for a suspected DUI. Upon being pulled over, Lopez presented police officers with fake identification documents. Rutgers policy dictates that the university reports any individual who is both arrested for a violent crime and has immigration complications to ICE.

Faculty signatories of the letter claim that Rutgers unfairly treated the suspected illegal immigrant by excessively charging him. They also assert that Barchi is violating his previous statement, in which he called Rutgers a “safe haven.”

“Any illusion that Rutgers is a place where individuals will not be targeted on the basis of immigration status is shattered once representatives of our community, entrusted with ensuring campus security, collaborate with ICE,” the faculty said. “We call upon you now to speak loudly and forcefully by issuing clear directives to the Rutgers University Police, in writing and shared with our entire community, that they are not to inquire about or report any individuals’ immigration status, and that they must not detain people for rendition to ICE. In this alarming moment, such a decisive statement is critical to ensuring that your stated commitment to our campus as a safe haven holds true.”

I am out here laughing that Rina shippers think that Portwell is going to break up which leads to Rina finally getting together all within two weeks they literally said the same thing last season and ended up not happening. I remember last season Rina shippers were so convinced that Second Chances was going to be about Rina where Ricky confesses his feelings to Gina on Opening Night just a few weeks after Rini broke up and that episode had nothing to do with Rina they are so dumb sometimes.

I'm gonna defend the Rinas here for a second b/c I don't believe they're "dumb" for holding onto the hope their ship will be explored someday. I'm also a Betty/Archie (Riverdale), Harry/Hermione (Harry Potter), Uma/Harry (Descendants), Bonnie/Damon (TVD) shipper, among many others, so believe me when I say I know exactly how it feels to keep holding onto the hope ur fav ship will be properly explored one day (even if it never happens). That didn’t stop me from enjoying every bit of content I got, even after the movies/shows ended. If Gina was sobbing (2.06 flashback) after just a few weeks of hanging out with Ricky and falling for him, wouldn’t a break up with EJ, who she’s actually dated for a few weeks/months, hit her harder? It would take more time to process. Even if Ricky realizes he has feelings for Gina in S3, which is a possibility, I don’t see Rina taking any major steps in a romantic direction until well into S4 (pacing wise). But for any of that to happen, Gina and EJ would have to break up by S3 finale, and none of us know that to be true. Either way, I’m just gonna be hoping for a solid S3 official trailer that’ll keep us hyped until the premiere (hoping it’s released this week!!!). The president of Rutgers University has argued that the recent rash of anti-Semitism on campus is protected by the First Amendment.

Speaking during a student government town hall last week, Robert Barchi said: 'If I'm a Ku Klux Klan member, and I'm going to burn a cross on a vacant lot, that's a constitutionally protected right.'

The FDA has granted emergency use authorization (EUA) to Rutgers' RUCDR Infinite Biologics and its collaborators for a new collection approach that utilizes saliva as the primary test biomaterial for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the first such approval granted by the federal agency. The new saliva collection method, which RUCDR developed in partnership with Spectrum Solutions and Accurate Diagnostic Labs (ADL), will allow for broader population screening than the current method of nose and throat swabs. "The impact of this approval is significant," said Andrew Brooks, chief operating officer and director of technology development at RUCDR, who also is a professor in the School of Arts and Sciences Department of Genetics at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. "It means we no longer have to put health care professionals at risk for infection by performing nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal collections. We can preserve precious personal protective equipment for use in patient care instead of testing. We can significantly increase the number of people tested each and every day as self-collection of saliva is more quick and scalable than swab collections. All of this combined will have a tremendous impact on testing in New Jersey and across the United States." Soon after the Rutgers-ADL team received notification from the FDA on Saturday, the White House's COVID-19 testing task force called Brooks to offer congratulations and support and to ask about any specific hurdles to expanding testing and enabling other laboratories to benefit from the accomplishment. Shortly after the White House call, the research team was contacted by chief executive officers of some of the world's largest life sciences companies that are involved in COVID-19 testing. "I have spoken with these companies' leadership to not only share knowledge but to create opportunities for continuing to help innovate during this crisis," Brooks said. "We will work closely with these new partners, the FDA and the White House task force to leverage everything Rutgers has to offer to not only help our community but also make a global impact." Rutgers president orders review of ruling against professor for Facebook posts about white gentrification in Harlem

In a letter sent Wednesday evening, Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi informed senior administrators that he has ordered the reevaluation of an earlier ruling finding Professor James Livingston guilty of violating university policy for two Facebook posts critical of white gentrification in Harlem.

The tenured professor of history at Rutgers-New Brunswick came under investigation earlier this summer by the university’s Office of Employment Equity after several of Livingston’s Facebook posts grabbed the attention of the media.

On May 31, while at a restaurant in his Harlem neighborhood, Livingston posted on his personal account, “OK, officially, I now hate white people. I am a white people, for God’s sake, but can we keep them–us–us out of my neighborhood?” He wrote that the restaurant was “overrun with little Caucasian assholes” and said, “I hereby resign from my race.”

After Facebook removed the post the following day, citing its Community Standards on hate speech, Livingston posted, “I just don’t want little Caucasians overrunning my life … remand them to the suburbs, where they and their parents can colonize every restaurant.”

By June 1, the posts had drawn the attention of conservative website The Daily Caller, and coverage soon followed in local and national outlets.

Media coverage inevitably led offended members of the public to complain to Rutgers. The Office of Employment Equity (OEE) launched an investigation and, in a July 31 findings report, determined that Livingston’s posts violated the university’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and Harassment (despite the report’s failure to identify any Rutgers student or community member complaints accusing Livingston of discriminatory conduct). The report concluded the posts were not protected by the First Amendment and amounted to racial discrimination in violation of university policy.

After Livingston’s appeal was denied, FIRE wrote to President Barchi on Aug. 20 to demand that the ruling be reversed. We argued that Professor Livingston’s Facebook posts to his personal account amounted to speech on a matter of public concern — namely, gentrification and race — and are certainly protected by the First Amendment. We reminded the president of his laudable promise in public comments that: “Faculty members, as private citizens, enjoy the same freedoms of speech and expression as any private citizen and shall be free from institutional discipline in the exercise of these rights.”

FIRE’s call to reverse the finding was joined by others, including the American Association of University Professors, which wrote that any discipline of Livingston based on OEE findings would violate Rutgers’ academic freedom policy.

This week, President Barchi appeared to take the first step towards reversing the OEE ruling.

In a letter sent to senior administrators, Barchi explains that he has sent back the findings report to the OEE with the directive to “more rigorously analyze the facts and assumptions underlying its conclusions.” He writes that, while he found Livingston’s speech offensive, “few values are as important to the University as the protection of our First Amendment rights—even when the speech we are protecting is insensitive and reckless.”

The president will also convene an advisory group of scholars and Rutgers faculty to provide guidance on alleged policy violations that raise First Amendment and academic freedom questions.

President Barchi’s words are encouraging and lead us to expect that the OEE’s reevaluation will correct its earlier flawed First Amendment analysis. As we argued to the president on Aug. 20, if Livingston’s speech in this case is not protected by the First Amendment, all of Rutgers faculty should be afraid to post or say anything potentially offensive or controversial, particularly when they are one screenshot or recording away from riling an internet backlash.

We hope to soon be able to report that Professor Livingston has been cleared of charges and that Rutgers stands firmly behind its faculty’s rights to free expression and academic freedom.
