netflix rlly caged the whole strawhat cast in their basement to film promotional shit way back huh, theyve been constantly posting videos of the cast doing things as a way to promote the live action (which were pre-recorded), it is kinda sad bec if only netflix paid their writers, and actors, we couldve had fresh contents from the strawhat cast 😪

so sad that the writers of cm didn’t continue Aaron’s backstory with his abusive father. it would have added so much more context to why he joined the fbi and also the relationship with his brother.

A sombre shot of Sam Reid and John Leary as Dale Jennings and Murray Gallagher from No More Lies, as well as some others ❤️

Next Thursday, it will have been three years since No More Lies first went to air on the ABC. It’s a funny feeling, seeing all these Season One episodes reach their third year anniversaries, as I have such strong vivid memories of watching this show as it first aired, whilst we were in lockdown. It truly doesn’t feel like that long ago, but according to time and mathematics, it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No More Lies really did strike a nerve. It’s brilliantly brave and searing storytelling around the plight of HIV and AIDS affected people and how the media represented - or rather, misrepresented - their stories and circumstances. This is why I love The Newsreader so dearly. It hasn’t portrayed the 1980s through rose-coloured glasses, and has sought to elevate the stories and perspectives that were either misrepresented or not represented at all during the time. It also demonstrates how easy it is to fall for misinformation, and I genuinely believe that this episode is a great lesson in media literacy. The whole show itself, but in particular this episode, should be used in schools and universities.

A part of my paternal family history is my Dad’s younger brother, who was a young gay man who contracted HIV during the 1990s. This was the decade in which medical treatment and antiretroviral therapies became available to significantly prolong the progression of the virus to AIDS in HIV-affected patients. He was thankfully able to benefit from these therapies and medications, which bought him two decades of life, longer than our Russ and Caroline would have lived for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We sadly lost my paternal uncle Christmas 2012, when he was only forty years old. Through watching this episode with my Dad, it gave me the courage and the instigator for a discussion about my uncle’s condition, how people responded to it, and how it impacted his life. I’ll forever be grateful to No More Lies, and especially to Michael Lucas and Kim Ho, for giving me the opportunity to have this discussion with my Dad, which I had been hesitant to have for at that point nine years. Never underestimate the power of good media and the conversations and connections it can bring about. 💖🌟

July 2014. Dazzling Tula Lotay artwork for SUPREME BLUE ROSE, previewing the cover of #2 (above), and a page from that issue:
Tumblr media
I don't even know how to summarize what's going on here because this series is a pastiche on a pastiche of a pastiche: a Warren Ellis revival of Alan Moore's SUPREME — an extended pastiche of/homage to the Silver Age Superman, and Silver Age DC more broadly, based on Rob Liefeld's '90s Superman pastiche/parody — framed as a pastiche of William Gibson's Blue Ant trilogy (PATTERN RECOGNITION, SPOOK COUNTRY, and ZERO HISTORY), and featuring some of the most jaw-dropping artwork I've seen in a modern comic book. It will probably not make any sense at all if you're not familiar with the things I've just named, but if you are, it is unaccountably, exceptionally good.

"Little Miss Lydia Deetz doing her weekly Sunday morning jog at the local cemetery, looking for graves to rob, as per custom. It was snowing and raining today, so Miss Deetz enjoyed it more than usual."
Another Gibson Girl-style Beetlejuice fanart! It was mostly done tradionally, but I expanded it and added more digital touches. Not that perfect, but I'm proud! Also pen abuse!

The Terror characters (who are historically connected to Australia in one way or another) as marsupials.
John Franklin was the governer of Tansmania, a job that he wasn't particularly good at. (un)fun fact: I think everyone deserves to know the story of Mathinna, a young indigenous girl adopted by the Franklins in an attempt to "civilize" her, who was abandoned and died young after they left. In the show, his visage reminds me quite a lot of the northern hairy-nosed wombat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Irving tried to start a business raising sheep with his brother in Australia. He was robbed, almost died of dysentary, lost a ton of money, and went back to the Navy in shame. Fun fact: A piece of his cutlery was found with William Wentzell's initials carved onto them- implying that he was amongst the the deceased officers whose things were re-distributed amongst the men. He's a spotted-tailed quoll to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Graham Gore's father, John Gore, was a prolific explorer who circumnavigated the globe twice and participated in the Terra Australis expedition, later becoming one of the first British settlers on the continent. He was also the first person to shoot A. a person of Maori descent and B. a kangaroo. Most of Graham's family moved to Australia by the time he was a young man. Graham's squarishness reminds me of the extinct thylacoleo- also known as the pouch lion.

Bonus Round:
I've heard some information spread about Alfred Gibson, a man reported to be William Gibson's brother, who died in Ernest Giles's expedition in Australia in the 1870s. The Gibson desert was named after him. "Alf," as he called himself, was born in was born in 1851 and was almost certainly not related to our Billy. Nontheless, I'll bite and designate Billy a marsupial- the numbat! A rat-like, termite-eating, thin-snouted little dude.
