I want to start by saying that I love your writing, it's well-planned and easy to follow, but captivating and detailed at the same time, and I've spent so much time rereading your works that it's honestly embarassing, but I can't help myself, because each time I find some other detail to focus on, which makes it all worthwhile.

But I wanted to ask about your HS AU - specifically about the other canon characters from MOTA. I remember you mentioned that they (Brady, Benny, Curt, and all the others) don't know the severity of Gale's home situation, only that he spends a lot of time at Bucky's. But they surely had to notice something? Especially after the events of "Broken Things"? Maybe they didn't know about the situation in details, but if the boys (or just Gale) missed school in that period of 10 days between "Broken Things" and "Silence", they must have asked questions? They must have sent messages to both of them? Maybe Gale and John tried to cover it with an illness or a roadtrip or something, but there must have been times, after he came back to school, when he didn't feel quite like himself, and when Bucky was visibly distraught when Gale wasn't near or when he was more quiet than usual, etc. Sorry for rambling, I'm just very curious, in general, if they ever suspected something, or how Gale and John handled that at school, with their closest friends?

Hi dear, thank you for the ask! ❤️ Nothing makes me happier than to hear that you guys are enjoying my stories. These were great questions!

Gradually, their friends became more aware of Gale's family issues as Gale's mental health started to deteriorate before Broken Things. They put two and two together and filled the gaps - sometimes incorrectly - with their own assumptions.

When Gale cracks, there's no hiding it, but Gale and Bucky try not to share how bad it got.

Bucky goes back to school on day 2 after it happens but Gale is absent for a few more days. Their friends can already tell from Bucky’s agitated, sleep-deprived, unusually quiet behaviour that something is very wrong. To their questions, he just says that Gale is away because of family issues.

Some of the boys message Gale, but Gale brushes them off. He pretends it's a much less serious issue than it actually is.

When Gale comes back to school, their friends are ready to move on and carry on as usual, but they can tell that Gale is not okay. He goes through all the motions but his and Bucky's interactions give it away, because they're not as playful as usual. Constant worried looks from Bucky, half-embraces that look more protective than possessive, quiet affection instead of over the top flirting.

The boys are all texting each other separately to discuss what's going on. Bucky told one of them that Gale moved in with him, Gale told someone else that he just didn't want to feel anything anymore.

It's Curt who eventually takes the plunge, texts Gale and finds a way to stir the conversation to what happened, and then he doesn’t let up. He tells Gale that they're his friends and worry about him.

This is all through text, which is lucky for Curt because that's why Gale is eventually able to open up a bit. He says that he considered taking his life and that's why he needed things to change. He still paints a less severe picture than reality, but it's better than nothing. He gives Curt permission to tell the others but also says he doesn’t want to talk about it.

The issues John and Gale struggle with for the rest of Year 12 affect their friend group negatively. With some other things (like new girlfriends, university plans etc.) also pulling them away, it becomes less tight-knit than it used to be, and they don't hang out as often as in the past. Their paths diverge, and it's mostly just Bucky-Curt and Bucky-Brady who stay in touch regularly after high school.

He couldn't keep worrying about giving Regulus his space. He had to know for certain if he had any chance to be with Regulus at all.

mmmm okay so if I ever manage to go back to the Cirque de Triomphe Earth-3 DC series, there's a segment that's one of the latest points in the timeline that got developed, working title 'Battle Royale with Cheese' where Dick and his Outlaws (Roy and Kori), Slade and Joe Wilson, Owlman and Ultraboy (Kon), Tim Drake, the Gotham Circus, and the up-and-coming evil mercenary trio the Transhumanists (Raven, Vic Stone, and Garfield Logan) all wind up in the same random small town in the middle of the night having a six-way super battle.

Dick and Tim both have Talon healing in this timeline, so the only normal humans on the field are Roy and some clowns. Poor roy. 😆

I think my most fun and active unpublished wip is the 'jin ling's gay uncles go roadtripping' one, currently at 70k, which is a canon divergence AU from Mo Xuanyu's pov where, because reasons, Wei Wuxian winds up in Mo Ziyuan's body, instead, and Mo Xuanyu survives.

This allows me to put both of them in the same place and do character study stuff for both, while prodding the main plot for which parts are causally linked in what ways and where it has joints. So far Jiang Cheng is the most difficult character to wrangle along, less because he won't do what I want than because Mo Xuanyu's perspective on him is so different from Wei Wuxian's that hitting the thematic beats I want takes careful thought.

PoliZ’s Birthday Self-Recs: WinterIron

Indulging myself in the week leading up to my birthday by sharing some of my favorite fics I’ve written, grouped primarily  by pairing/relationship.  

I’m starting with WinterIron - aka  Bucky Barnes and Tony Stark.  While not my first slash pairing, it’s my most-written with   77 Bucky /Tony works  and  9 Bucky & Tony works     Yes, it’s contradicted by MCU canon, but so what?  I see two science nerds  with involuntary body modification and gaslighting/brainwashing in common. 😁 Plenty for me to work with both canon-divergent and full on AUs, as well as a mix of both.

Here  - in reverse chronological order  by pub date - are my half-dozen favorite WinterIron fics I’ve written, at least as of this moment.   If you go read them, I’d love to hear what you think, either here or as a comment on the fic!  (and a No Prize to anyone who identifies the songs that 4 of these titles came from!)

A Quiet Spree 

(Mature/explicit, canon-divergent, 14,272 words) -- Stark overextends himself in the workshop after a tough mission.   Barnes, venturing out from under Cap's wing, visits the workshop with the intent of having Stark look at his arm.   Heavy flirting and mutual pining ensues.

So Open Up, I'm Climbin' In 

(Mature/explicit, College AU,  17,504 words)  based on prompt: “ ‘we’re on a roadtrip with some friends and we have to share a hotel room and there’s only one bed and a whole lot of sexual tension’ AU Would be nice if it was smutty. Steve and Sam totally set them up. Later Bucky and Tony realise they are both fools since they've been in love with each other since the beginning of their acquaintance. “  Expect  mild angst,  plenty of pining, flirting and snark and a 'bot cameo.

CTRL+Z 

(Teen, No Powers AU, 3,754 words) - Tony Stark is finally getting rid of the last reminder of a painful relationship.  James, the tattoo removal technician is both incredibly handsome and a fellow pop culture fan.  Tony finds himself wanting to spend more time with James than the brief sessions they have together.

Wait and See  (if it’s the best you ever had)       

(Mature, No Powers AU, 10,322 words) -- To celebrate him finding a full time job after a rough patch,  Bucky Barnes' friends -- Steve and Sam -- take him to a burlesque show.   Antonio, (who may or may not be a drag king), catches Bucky's eye, and vice versa.  Bucky also strikes up a friendship with Ton-E,  a possibly-genderfluid barista working at the  24-hr coffee shop in the lobby of Stark Industries, where Bucky now works.   Will he be able to choose between one or the other?

Upping the Ante

(Explicit, Fantasy/Medieval AU, 6,583 words) -- Sir Anthony of Stark, returning to the capital of the kingdom, comes across a traveling medicine man and fortuneteller who is keeping a man in chains.   As it is the duty of a knight to right wrongs,  Anthony investigates and ends up with more than he bargained for.

And Your Heart Beats in My Blood 

(Teen,  canon-adjacent soulmate AU,  12,296 words) -- Tony Stark's soulmate died when they were both young;  or so he thought.   When a ghostly heartbeat continues to haunt him,  Tony's AI proposes an unlikely hypothesis.

Hi, it's been a month and I showed back up in my inbox but i know you still love me, so I'm going to answer them anyway

(I also do not want to do work, and that's my other option)

Let's see... most challenging. *goes and looks through my WIP folder* So they're all hard for different reasons. Most of them are just difficult because they got too big and now I have to actually do the writing. But the two that feel hardest for other reasons are my Old Guard canon divergence where Joe's wife dies at Jerusalem and comes back alongside Joe and Nicky. I love this character, I love this fic, but sending the characters on a multi-decade roadtrip in the 12th century requires SO MUCH research. The other challenging one is my Old Guard high school AU. I've published some of it, but there's a longer Joe/Nicky fic that started it all that I decided to do in 6 different POVs and non-chronological. I stand by that choice, but the editing on that for cohesion alone is a nightmare.

As for a scene I can't wait to write... honestly I mostly just skip around and write that scene because I lack self control. But I have started a sort of parallel fic to my Eliot has a daughter Leverage AU wherein Parker Acquires a Child and the OT3 adopt him. And I know that for the kid's 18th birthday, they're going to take him on his first Real Heist. I think it is going to be SO FUN to write. Whenever I get there.
