Niche kin appreciation! 🌵🐍
-> post
Tumblr media
1. introduce your kin
I'm a greater roadrunner therian! I guess the first thing I'll say is that they're real and don't just exist in TV. roadrunners are a member of the cuckoo family. there are two species of roadrunners: greater and lesser roadrunners. greater roadrunners and larger and are found in the southwestern US and parts of Mexico while lesser roadrunners are found in the western portions of Mexico and Central America
roadrunners are the state bird of New Mexico, where I live! I am surrounded by the little guys
roadrunners are capable of flight though they rarely use it and only ever in short bursts. they can run at speeds as high as 20mph so, for the most part, they see no reason to.
desert nights are cold, especially in the winter (the nighttime temperatures in my city can get as low as 0° with wind chills in the negatives!) so roadrunners will go into a torpor to preserve heat and energy. in the morning when the sun rises they'll puff up their feathers exposing dark patches on skin on their back to absorb the heat.

It's kind of interesting to start hitting a time in my life where... i've kind of said most things about my identity at least once, somewhere. Not that i don't have things left to write, reword, say in better prose, or again because the first time was a passing thought in a chat with no archive.
But i'm not anymore, in the phase of joining the community, and rediscovering my every angles and needing to word it. It's mundane now, when I feel something bird-like. It's not a "ah, so that's what it was all along!", it's just me. It's a double edge, because I then sometimes forget how complex that web of experience is.
Today was mundane. I was just me, just a bird. Nothing much to say, from my perspective.
Today, I woke up later than usual. The sun was already up. I'm not used to this, as I usually wake and sleep with the sun, but i stayed up later than usual yesterday. Diurnal, like roadrunners.
Then I was quite pleased to see it was actually quite sunny. I wanted to sunbath, so i took out my bearded dragon in the garden, and sunbathed with her. She took on darker spots to soak up the sun, i wore a black shirt to mimic the patches of skin roadrunners show to do the same.
In the afternoon, I helped my family clean up my grandfather's house. I sent a message to another bird, inquiring whether she, an owl, would be interested in one of my late grandmother's owl statue collection.
I remarked how strange it felt for my neck to not be able to look upward how i wanted to. How bizarre the human activity of cleaning up spider webs felt, my arms-wings-talons straining to reach the roof.
Tonight i'm eating sushi. The raw fish always feel particularly birdy to me, I think it's the sensation of it. If I didn't stop my bird side, I'd want to swallow it whole, as birds do.
It's all so mundane. it doesn't even register as a particularly bird like day to me. I didn't do anything that made me shifty, that brought out the roadrunner in a way that supersedes the human. So many things that I just forget to mention, after a while. Obvious to me and only me.

About me:
Hi, I'm Johnny Knoxville, but I prefer to be called Knoxville or Knox. I'm an introject of, you guessed it, Johnny Knoxville. I use he/him pronouns and I'm bicurious, still figurin' that whole mess out.
Don't be fuckin' weird about my source. I am a different person to that guy, so don't be weird about me. I don't mind flirtin' or humorous sexualization, just don't be too bummed if that's not returned. Also okay with compliments.
You can ask me about my appearance, I don't really care about that kinda thing. Though, my source is pretty accurate up until about 2006.
Comfortable with asks, personal questions, DMs. Look what I did for a livin', I'm an open book.

The Noise
No Guarantees CD review, September 2003
Too often, between a first demo, a first EP, and a first full-length release, some intangible quality which helps to make a band great gets lost or misplaced in the mix. This happened to the Throwing Muses and the Pixies. My Own Worst Enemy, on the other hand, has made the same transition with grace and aplomb. The older material is kickass as always: Who Knew is akin to 'Roadrunner' fronted by a sloe-eyed chanteuse; MIA is like electroshock that makes you smarter. Delicately bleak and lovely ballads like Why Not Beautiful, Pills and Pride, and the superb Late Show vary the pace. Poison is a nascent classic, with a desolately lively feel right up there with Human Switchboard; ditto the downright catchy dirge-cum-drunken-chantey "(I'm the One You Wanted) Not the One (You Got)". This isn't a perfect CD, but even interesting experiments like the quaintly odd Mr. Leatherboots, overproduced declamations like Throw It All Away and the dynamic but misguided power-pop cover of Never Talking to You are ambitious efforts. And the CD's craziest song, Yearbook, with its start and stop dynamic and inspired xylophone obbligatos, belongs on every college radio station playlist in the Western world. (Francis DiMenno)

No Guarantees CD review, via email, November 2003
I've been spinning the fu*k outta the thing and have fired off e-mails to Dubrow and Allison demanding they play "No Guarantees" on the airwaves!...That's some good singin/good playing...Sue is the real Mary Ellen, and (Steve is) the basher of strung-out chords and high-strung singing! No wonder Lindsay was inspired to swing from the chandeliers. My favorite song is Hey Hey Sunshine...a real anthem. Goddamn the fu*kin' EXHILARATION of the thing--total 11th Dream Day first album 1988 vintage days of college radio. Something about those days never ended and I wish it was then right now (aw god we didn't know how good we had it). But My Own Worst Enemy seems bursting with that same sense of epochal climax (which is what I look for in all music). Should also mention John is one fu*kin' awesome skinpounder. It's the luck of the Irish. (Joe S. Harrington, Author, SONIC COOL)

No Guarantees CD Review, November 2003
If you're anything like me you're wondering when this retro-cool trend in popular and indie music is going to end. It just isn't my cup of tea. Now, that being said, I'm not one to turn my back on, or my nose up at a good album. No Guarantees by My Own Worst Enemy made me set aside my lack of enthusiasm for this kind of musical expression. The driving force behind my "turnaround"? Susan Minichiello.
What a set of pipes! Her voice is powerful, emotive and intense. The disc's cover sticker mentions the band has been compared to Throwing Muses and Patti Smith. I can definitely see the validity of these comparisons. She's got incredible power and presence, best showcased on the dark and thrilling Poison. Another showcase is Late Show. With its simple musical arrangement, it highlights her voice, showing off its depth.
The tracks on which Steve provides lead vocals don't go over quite as well, with one exception: the short, catchy Throw It All Away where the fuzziness of the vocal track softens the nasal quality, making pitch less of an issue, creating a very catchy vocal sound.
Musically it's a competent display of retro-feel modern rock. It's not going to blow you away with its awesome display of originality or groundbreaking use of their instruments. But it's certainly well crafted, catchy and, for the most part, quite melodic.
Generally speaking, two things can woo me to enjoy a disc that falls into a genre or subgenre that I don't normally appreciate. Fuzzy jangle guitar will get me every time. The other, the one that made me take heed of No Guarantees, is exceptional vocal skill. Thank you, Sue. You broadened my musical horizons. My Favorites: Poison and Throw It All Away. (SpodySingAlong)

No Guarantees CD Review, Winter 2003
Comparing My Own Worst Enemy (a great name, if too long) with the Modern Lovers and Patti Smith, as their label does, gives a good indication of the spunk found on this CD. Sue is mostly on lead vocals, and cuts like Poison are the best here, with loud, fuzzy guitars, the kind of music more likely to star on college radio than on MTV, and all the better for it. Rock Pulse
No Guarantees CD Review, April 2004
Boston based trio My Own Worst Enemy consists of singer/guitarist Sue, singer/guitarist Steve and drummer and backing vocalist John (that's right, they're a completely bass-less band). Having being compared to the likes of poetic rock 'n' roll Queen Patti Smith and indie group Throwing Muses, this band have obviously been making an impression on the industry. The group's second full-length release is No Guarantees.
The 13-track album starts with 'Who Knew'; one of the more 'punk' influenced tracks on the CD. It's a strong track to open with as it showcases the raw, honest sound that this band are so good at, and starts to hint at Sue's rich vocals (this isn't really fully shown until later in the CD.)
Track 2, MIA has a more 'rockabilly' feel to it. This time, it's Steve on the vocals, with lyrics such as "listening to your records makes me wanna start a fight" conjuring up images of an American country bar where the beer flows as freely as the smart talk and punch-ups (or at least in my imagination...)
Track 3 is Why Not Beautiful and we're back with Sue on lead vocals. This track has a light, summery feel to it with striking singing. It is, quite basically, 2 minutes of purely pleasant music that will get you singing along in no time (just don't try to sing as well as Sue, it won't work.)
Poison is without a doubt my favourite track on the album. The music has a dark, sinister atmosphere to it that works perfectly with Sue's smoky, hazy voice delivering the disturbing lyrics. You have to listen to this song!
Late Show, is in my opinion, one of the best tracks on the album. It's a slow, thoughtful ballad with truly emotive lyrics that are delivered passionately by Sue; I can imagine lots of drunk and emotional people all over the world sitting in their rooms and singing along to this (again, I think I have an over-active imagination.)
Track 6, Hey Hey Sunshine is a poppy, happy hippy kind of song, with loose vocals and a beat that will get you clapping along, if not waving your tambourine about. I'm thinking wonderful summer days and lots of daisy covered fields.
Other highlights of this album include Not the One, with it's grungy guitar, moody vocals and repetition of the lyrics, "I'm the one you wanted, not the one you got." Track 10 is an impressive version of Husker Du's Never Talking To You Again, which is actually pretty catchy.
The penultimate track is Yearbook, a slightly strange song with Steve providing lead vocals. The lyrics include repetitions of such classic American yearbook signings as 'have a great summer', 'see you in September' and 'we'll be friends forever'. I'm warning you now, if you listen to this track more than once, you will get these phrases drilled into your head and will probably start using them in everyday life instead of the popular 'Good bye'. Possibly.
The album finishes with Pills and Pride, another ballad with heart-felt lyrics and a genuine performance from Sue, who takes the lead vocals. This song really communicates Sue's great voice, and is an effective way of winding down the CD.
Overall, this is clearly a good album, produced by a great band. And although I'm not a huge fan of retro-indie music, (or whatever those crazy kids are calling it these days) I have to say that this CD has changed my thoughts on the genre. No Guarantees has a little something for everyone, and the use of two main vocalists is effective in creating an appealing male/female dynamic. This album is poignant, passionate and powerful. (Jess)

Might seem silly, but drawing helps a lot in my books. There's just an inherent feeling of uncanny valley when you don't get it right, which happens to make it a very frustrating process, but also makes it rewarding once something feels correct!
I'm personally fluid in my draconity : it's something a bit separate in my case born from interpreting avian feelings through a draconic lense as a kid that stuck throughout, both at the same time a roadrunner therian and draconic in something between hearted and kin feelings. So I use that tactic every so often to figure out what my brain is doing to me this time around, ahah.
Another tactic is consuming a LOT of dragon media and checking what you relate to and why. I like monster hunter a lot in the diversity of appearances and quirks it has, even if I'm usually more of a folkloric medieval dragon (I was after all raised with french myths). I don't usually relate to one thing enough to say I'm that, but a lot of little pieces help me say "yeah that's a trait that talks to me" or "that feels undraconic from my point of view so I probably don't have that"
Hey, dearest followers and fellas!
As you might've noticed, I'm a little bit less active than usual. I'm still figuring out things. I thought that I'd debunk being a draconian species quickly but it turns out that I actually might be something draconic. I'm not sure where to go now because the draconic world is broadly individual and full with many different facettes. I think I could be a semi-aquatic drake but at this point I can't tell anymore how to find that out. Especially regarding my looks. I'm kind of lost now even tho, I did make progress. It's a difficult situation I'm finding myself to be in. Usually, I'm doing research and making decisions based on facts. Now as a draconic creature, this is almost impossible, as I find.
If you have any idea how to find out what I look like (phantom limbs alone are very unreliable imo), then please lemme know. It can be via DM, reblog, ask box or comment. Just make sure to ping me somehow. This could also help a dearest friend of mine who also struggles with finding out the details.

Hi! I'm a roadrunner therian! Could I get a rock and roll playlist that reminds you of flying or/and running (maybe fast beats? Dunno), bird themed, or themed after overcoming obstacles? Thanks a lot! For a few music I like, acdc, powerwolf, starset, and if you want some more calm ones if you don't find any satisfying stuff in rock and roll, glass animals or yodelice.

Nicky loves cartoons. Bugs, Roadrunner, Foghorn, they never fails to put a smile on his face.
Joe loves to watch Nicky watch cartoons, loves the light and enjoyment he finds in them.
Nile finds it utterly fascinating that this immortal assassin whose killed a lot of bad guys still laughs when Bugs Bunny pulls a fast one on Elmer Fudd. Fascinating and adorable.

Found a game named WorldOfWings on phone so I've just been taking bird pictures
Sadly no roadrunner, the USA location is way too north for it (Yellowstone park) but I might buy the European location, because I've genuinely wanted to brush up on bird species for a while... It seems it's also a lot more north than where I am in the Europe zone though rip.

Desert Dwelling Animals
Many animals call the Mojave Desert home. A lot of which hide from the sun, and are quite tough from the lack of water. This is not to say that creatures cannot live in the harsh environment, but you’d have to look a little harder for those animals. What some would find surprising to find out in the Mojave would be squirrels. Yes, squirrels. They are not the usual tree jumping squirrels like you’d find in most green areas. They are ground squirrels, and, within a quick glance, look more like chipmunks.
Black Bears roam the area as well, but just like their kin to the east, they don't really like to bother people unless they are provoked in some manner or something or someone has gone into their territory.
Tumblr media
(Credit goes to High Desert's Youtube for the picture) Along with the normal creatures you'd assume would be out in the desert, such as spiders, scorpions and venmous snakes (and there are quite a few..trust me) are mule deer as well. Seeing one is a rare occurance, but they look and act more akin to their eastern cousins, the white tailed deer.
Tumblr media
(Credit goes to DesertUSA.com for the picture) Speaking of bugs, scoprions and snakes, always remember, if you decide to venture out in the desert, to check areas that have had a lot of shade or in the dark. Quite a few venomous critters like to hang out there, and don't leave your shoes outside for the same reason. If you decide to go out in the desert at night, be sure to bring a black light as well as a regular flashlight; Scorpions glow in the dark, and mix well with the sand as they are the same color. Pictured below is one in the daylight:

(Photo Credit goes to digital-desert.com) So even though the desert is drab and many areas without human habitants, many animals call it home.As with any wild animal, always be careful when approaching them. Have a great day everyone. Doni aka Gee
