The sheer iconic-ness of Roa trying to disqualify Yuga for a reason he know is bullshit. Trying to track down Otes so he can demand why he chose Yuga to be the inspiration of the next generation over him. This duel makes my heart break for Roa.

Yuga VS Roa 2 gets an honorable mention, though. Roa pretending to have lost his memories so he can get a new fresh start in his life because he thought he hit rock bottom, only to realize he was rocking it and everyone loves and supports him through it all, was PEAK. Least favourite moment

Got around to finally finishing my reread of Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon just in time for the end of the year, so here's my mini-review of each route:

Moon Princess

It's kinda perfect.

Through the critical lens of analyzing a twenty-years-later, non-eroge remake of the original's first route… I adore every decision being made here. Shiki and Arcueid are better than they've ever been. Vlov is fantastic, not only as a character but for showcasing how vampires have been changed from bogeymen to natural disasters. I love how Ciel's role in the story has been taken up by Noel and Mario and how they add extra tension and stakes to the story. I love how Ciel's new proper introduction gives her so much weight and intrigue. I love the bit from the manga they threw in. I love the Clair de Lune insert that is so on the nose it shouldn't work, and yet it DOES. I love how seamlessly it incorporates the more developed scale the franchise became in the decades between releases without distracting from that core bittersweet love story.

My hat goes off to the team. Actual peak.

Midnight Rainbow

A risky reimagining of the last three hours of the original Ciel route that transforms it into a sprawling tragedy that goes on for… 30+ hours. It's a long one. I'd even say it drags. Especially in the middle.

It's a larger and more complicated route, and with all those extra moving parts there's more room for me to pick nits. Ciel's design is the only redesign that, despite my efforts, doesn't fully work (I've got an idea for another post talking about that). I don't connect with or find this version of Shiki interesting enough to be in his head for that many hours. It feels like it dials back the sexual side of the horror too much--in a way that Moon Princess thankfully didn't--sometimes feeling like a Realta Nua-style censored version of itself, which I do consider a minor detriment.

Etc, etc. You get the idea.

The last five hours are fantastic and make the ride more than worth it. Noel steals the show all the way to the end. What a character! If you told me four years ago that one of the newbies who threatened to bloat the narrative and take away precious screen time from the core iconic cast would be gunning for Kahoku's top spot, I'd call you a liar lol. Another thing that sticks with me is how the story fleshes out Roa's characterization. In the original, WHAT Roa was was always more interesting than WHO Roas was. But here they manage to even those two out quite nicely--a haunting remnant of the man who started this entire tragic cycle, not to be spitefully cut down, but instead laid to rest. It tied together everything for the new gut punch of a resolution where love humanizes and destroys the cast very well.

Extra Route

Nasu at his most indulgent, for better and worse.

I’m never going to say no to an Ultimate One battle. The all-out brawl between a fully powered Ciel and Arcueid is overdue, and the Shiki+Roa team-up is instantly iconic. I think the scenario overall is about half as narratively vapid as it is a spectacle. We have escalated to such an absurd degree that rule of cool is the only thing keeping this mess afloat. As for the epilogue, Cloudless Blue was a solid remake of the original route's ending. I’m glad it's in here and wasn’t cut, but it never shakes how incongruous it feels after the new version of the story goes so far thematically in the opposite direction. 

Overall, I’m glad this bizarre little Arcueid's optional superboss ending exists, but until Red Garden comes out, this is the ending note that Remake goes out on, and I’m not a fan of THIS being the reboot’s aftertaste.

This is the airhead that we know and love. This design suits that image of her more then og. While im not a complete fan i find this arc to be terribly cute and my wife (dont correct me on this matter)

TVL & VC Thoughts: Storyboarding

Because I have insomnia, I was up all night thinking about the rumors that Sam's contract was signed for 5 seasons. It makes me both nervous and hopeful, cuz Lestat features in way more than just 5 VC books. So if there's only 5 seasons locked in (hopefully NOT counting IWTV being split into 2, meaning Sam only has 3 other seasons), I'm wondering what these 3-ish other seasons would cover? 🤔 Hour-long episodes are enough to condense SOME of the books into 7/8-ep seasons, but not others.

TVL & QotD are ofc the bigguns, that COULD be condensed into one season, but SHOULD get their own individual ones, IMO.

ToTBT - urgh. I already said I hate this book. NGL I hope they condense this into 2 episodes MAX, as filler. Raglan was basically a monster-of-the-week. We do NOT need to be sitting here watching Lestat re-learn how to poop & pee. And ffs get rid of David, he literally just got in the way; let that dude retire! Having Ciprien come back'd be a cool feature/crossover, but I really don't need Lestat out here traumatizing more black people, thanks. 😒

MTD - yoooo.... What do you even DO with this? XD Like, I can't imagine having a whole frikkin season of Lestat's Inferno, but without Memnoch you lose ALL context behind Lestat's coma, his missing eyeball, Armand's suicide attempt, Louis' suicide attempt, and Lestat's course correction as a character. 😈 It was the fallout post-Memnoch that is so important to Lestat's story; but TBH I can honestly see the bulk of MTD itself condensed into 2 filler episodes tops.

Merrick - IMO this needs to be integrated into IWTV2 as part of Louis' storyline, not Lestat's. Even though it's here that he (officially) wakes from the coma (post-TVA--which IMO deserves its own spinoff season; we need more Assad if they don't cover Armand's backstory in IWTV2).

Blackwood Farm - NGL I want a whole dang season of BwF. 😅 IMO it's the craziest VC book, we NEED to see these people on screen. We'd get that Merrick Mayfair feature, too--but if they do her dirty here like AR, Imma be FURIOUS.

Blood Canticle - 💩 TRASH!!!!! 💩

Prince Lestat & RoA & BC: TBH I think these should all be merged into one season, as they all deal with Rhoshamandes. If QotD sets up Amel early, AND includes MEKARE, then PL should get right to the action. RoA was padded with a LOT of straight descriptions, which can EASILY be condensed on screen with visuals--that's the book that needed to be illustrated! RoA really doesn't need its own season; we just need to see Rhosh established as the Big Bad in PL & RoA, and get Amel's backstory. (I HOPE they'll keep the aliens in, but AR was obviously using bird-feathered/winged extraterrestrials as the secular answer to Christianity's angels, so I'm fine either way. I'll be sad if they cut them all out entirely and Amel's JUST a (human) ghost). As for BC, it wasn't a long book at all; it just had a lot of BIG, iconic moments. I DEMAND to see Chateau Era Loustat domestic tooth-rotting fluff on my effing screen, ISTG. 🙏 This is the series finale--it deserves to give Loustat E V E R Y T H I N G; from the lowest lows to the greatest highs. I need Prince Consort Louis bossed up. 🤴🏾 I need Lestat having a mental breakdown just like Louis did when Daniel was tearing him to shreds in Ep7. I need Armand screaming, crying, throwing up. Why I like them / Why I don't

Neil is such a unique character among Yu Gi Oh antagonists and Yu Gi Oh in general. When he's on the antagonists side he's oddly principled. When antagonists usually cheat he follows his own rules, he accepts the punishment when he loses. When he's on the enemy side after the Goha siblings arc, after he develops more of his sense of identity outside his role in the goha corporation he literally just quits and delivers ramen.

His attitude is really unique too because it seems liked he for the longest time existed in his little niche, like he needed the rules and purpose that working for Goha gave him. He turns against Rush Duels because their new and against the rules and don't make sense to him. Even though he's like, not good at understanding others he never treats them badly. He's best friends with a fucking chair and it's really sweet actually. He keeps his word and starts helping the heroes after they defeat him. His eventual character growth is learning how to exist outside his role, and once again, it's so funny how he just has a ramen delivery job for awhile.

Probably my second favorite character in Sevens because of the way he foils Yuga and Roa so much (Yuga is my favorite and Roa is my third favorite by the way). Just, anti social kid who is a tech genius and started out with no friends and only made friends because of rush duels, but also like takes on way too much responsibilities. Yuga's all about breaking outside the system and free from roles, and like does not want the role of the defender of rush duels to start with, whereas Neil kind of needs a role or to be part of a larger system to function for the longest time until he says fuck it and starts delivering ramen.

What I like about their appearance

He looks exactly like Joshua Kiryu from Twewy in glasses, and technically he's like walking around in his pajama all the time.

Literally any time Neil is nice to his chair best friend.

Least favourite moment

I don't really have one. I hate how his counterpart in Go Rush is obsessed with opening furniture stores. They keep beating the dead horse on that joke and it's literally never funny. That's not really Neil's fault though.
