Notes on a broken ankle

More RL injury for writing reference, this time courtesy of the husbeast, who took a wrong step on the stairs while carrying a 40-pound bag of salt. Now that we're a few days past the acute stage (and into the "this is so annoying" grumpy stage), I can share a few facts and observations...

Rolling an ankle can be more serious than you expect

If you roll it hard enough/far enough, you can break off a little piece at the end of your fibula

Incredibly painful at the time it happens, like nausea-level pain

Obvious swelling soon afterwards

Can't bear any weight at all

The official diagnosis is "fracture of the lateral malleolus"

Research says "isolated malleolar fractures make up 70% of all ankle fractures". I think that statistic includes the medial malleolus as well (at the end of the tibia)*

Simple breaks can heal on their own without surgery

Therefore, at our local ER, they simply splint the ankle and refer the patient to a podiatrist for additional treatment

The splint process was interesting. The doc had husbeast lie on his stomach. The first step was wrapping the leg from just below the knee down to the toes in fluffy cotton, just like when you get a cast. Then he took a double layer of cast material, soaked it in hot water and draped it down the back of the calf, around the heel, and along the sole. Over that, he wrapped a stretchy bandage, again from knee to toes. You want the foot to stay at a 90-degree angle while the plaster cures. The result is a hard, form-fitting splint.

Can't put any weight on it while it's in the splint, so he's on crutches. Which he kinda hates. Hopping is an option for short distances, although it gets tiring fast, and his "good" leg is now sore. Along with most of the rest of him, tbh. Hard to tell what's from the initial fall, and what's from not being used to crutches.

Aw, I didn’t get music for my chest CT scan. I did, however, text my hubs afterward that it was like going through my own personal Stargate. You can see it spinning inside!

Who's out here getting an MRI and requesting New Age music so that, during the scan, at least we can pretend we are on a starship in space and there's dramatic character reveals or plot points happening. While you are getting scanned with future scifi technology. You are an important part of this space narrative, the music says so.

Just,,,when all the Champions are captured, they get tortured to death instead of, idk, shooting them or something quick and relatively painless

Cause like Team RR is using them both as a show of power, but also what will happen to rebels and traitors if they don’t agree with Team RR

Imagine it being worse that they give E4 and gym leaders a change to join their side, cause they’re all strong trainer, before they label them as traitors, but not the Champions just to rub salt in the wound. Truly letting them know they have 0% chance of finding a way out of dying

Anyways yeah, Giovanni ordering them to stab Lance all over his body in non lethal parts, letting him slowly bleed out and watch the rest, Maxie ordering for Steven to be slowly burnt alive, Archie ordering the grunts to water board Wallace before finally drowning him, Iris being mauled to death by Dragon Types, just horrid deaths they all got

But wait ‼️‼️

What about SilkWing angst, like Giovanni ordering the grunts to kill Iris in front of Diantha and Lance, and both of them have to watch their practically get eaten alive. Them just screaming at the Leaders to let Iris live, saying “she’s only a teenager she doesn’t deserve this” “we don’t care what happens to us just let her go please”

But of course, Diantha’s gonna be next

Just Giovanni being an evil leader and killing Lances family in front of him before he dies himself

As if his daughter and wife wasn't enough fucking imagine Gio calls in the grunts and the other leaders to take Clair and Silver right where Lance is, and got them killed in front of him too cbmxnx like Gio's too deep within that rabbit hole that he had no problems having Silver killed, so Lance had to also watch his cousin and his son die before him man like csxjdmdjdkd

Ough bonus points if Lance is there just basically begging Giovanni to kill him, but for Gio that would be mercy, and why would he ever show him mercy y'know? Imagine if Gio and the other leaders kept him alive, making him watch as they destroy his home, his region, and the next will soon follow, he was forced to watch innocent people die, and Gio's there leaning close to him, forcing him to watch, "see how powerless you are? Are you truly still worthy of being called a Champion?" And he could only laugh as he watches the last bit of hope in Lance's eyes get extinguished, his defences crumbling, he was nothing more than a shell of his former self, and god did Giovanni revel in it.

Introductory Post

Welcome to the 2025 Disabled Whump & Hurt/Comfort Writing Challenge!

This is a 30-day writing challenge for original and fan fiction in the whump and hurt/comfort genres which centers on characters with disabilities. One general writing prompt is given for each day, and participants post a piece written to fill the prompt (any length) on that day, tagged appropriately (see rules 3 and 4).

The challange runs through April 1-30 2025, but late submissions tagged for the event will be accepted and reblogged to be featured on this blog. Prompts are posted now, so feel free to write things ahead of time, as long as they are posted on or after April 1.

All writers are welcome! This challenge will uplift the work of disabled writers, but you do not have a disability to participate.

The moderator is Mod K (she/her), and can be contacted via the ask box or messages.

Please read the rules and goals before sending asks as they have many FAQs in them!

Rules:

This event will be centered on characters with disabilities and chronic conditions, both visible (ex, paraplegia; limb differences) and invisible (ex, migraines; CFS). For writing to qualify, please have one or more disabled/chronically ill characters as the focus of your story, rather than a side character/cameo in a story about abled characters. Prompts are meant to facilitate stories about disability and disabled characters in the genres of hurt/comfort and whump (also known as hurt-no-comfort).

"Disability" can have a broad definition, and many conditions can be disabling. The moderator will not be filtering or rejecting submissions based on what medical conditions "count"; the only parameter is that the central character lives with a chronic condition of some type which is disabling for them in some way. Disabililties which come about in a fantasy or sci-fi setting are welcome as long as they are portrayed as being disabling in some way which is anaolgous (eg, a permanent problem caused by magic, or vampirism as a fantasy-disability). In fanfic it does not have to be canonical - headcanons and AUs are fine.

Please do not TAG your posts/links with the names of disabilities you are writing about (eg tagging a story about an epileptic character with “#epilepsy”,) or with “#disability” or “#chronic illness”, as those tags are used by disabled folks to talk about our RL disabilities and in the past there have been issues with writers inadvertently clogging those tags with fiction/writing advice.

Please DO tag your posts and links #disabledwhc2025 and, in a second tag, the day (eg, #day 1: established disability) so the mod can find and reblog them to the blog!

Original work and fanfic are both welcome; anything goes in terms of settings and genres (fantasy, sci-fi) as long as it’s h/c or whump.

You do not have to write for every prompt (that’s why there’s a mix of hurt and comfort!) or every day to be featured. If you don’t have time for 30 days, do as many as you feel like. If you only write either H/C or Whump, you can do a 15-day challenge, reinterpret the hurt prompts to include comfort, and/or find a whumpy spin on the comfort prompts.

If you write prompts out of order please still tag which day you are writing for and the title of that prompt set. So if you decide to post the prompt “frustrated ambition” from the set “Loss”, which is day 21, on April 3, please still tag your April 3 post “day 21: loss”.

There are no restrictions on what content can be posted, but please use content notes for the following topics: "Rape/noncon" "Underage" "Graphic Depictions of Violence" (ie gore), and "Major Character Death" before the start of your piece. You can also use the warning "Creator Chose Not to Use Content Warnings" if you do not want to spoil fic. Please use a "read more" for these pieces.

Challenge Goals:

Help destigmatize writing about disability in the whump and hurt/comfort genres. Complete recovery is not the only way to have a happy ending, and whumping already-disabled characters is a valid option for stories. So is having disabled characters doing the comforting, or the hurting!

Highlight disabled characters, canonical in media or original, in the genre.

Make disabled creators visible! A lot of us are drawn to hurt/comfort partly due to our disabilities.

Encourage nondisabled creators to try writing about disability, and dispel fear or anxiety about being “allowed to”.

Expand horizons of who disabled characters are. Headcanons or AUs about a character having or acquiring a disability are entirely welcome.

Make a reading recommendation list of works with disabled representation in whump and hurt/comfort. Please make sure that these are tagged #disabledwhc2025 and have "reading recommendation" somewhere in the post title. Please only do this with works whose authors have tagged them as whump, hurt/comfort or related terms. If you find a work on tumblr which you really, really want to recommend which you feel fits the genre and criteria but is not tagged as such, please ask the author if it is OK to include on the rec list before doing so, as some people may be uncomfortable with the genre tags being applied to their work, and ask or message mod K with a screenshot of the permission you received.

Like, reblog and comment on others' works! By following this blog you will see featured works and can give some love to the people who made them.

Reblog the prompts or otherwise spread the word about this event.

You face a lot of verbal abuse

You get screamed at, people don't listen and Gaslight you all the time

You get sexually harassed if your voice is even remotely percieved as feminine

You have to work under a lot of pressure trying to answer questions that no normal person would ask. So you have to do hours of research to find out If your product would be Safe If someone Rocket Launched a horse into it.

It's as if customers are trained to put you into fight or flight mode.

And don't get me started on the random schedule changes or having to Cover a Shop you Know Jackshit about. Only to get torn apart by the first inquiery.

There are even Call Centers Where you can Work from Home, If someone is still trying to Work through some Trauma about leaving the House / RL social Interactions.

So yeah, If you're looking for a job to put a recovering whumpee through even more pain.

Make Them Work Customer Service.

It will either help them to get better or make them worse.

(This Job helped me to Work through a Lot of Trauma and get Life Back under Control but hell yeah, did I learn to hate humans)

Oh, this was always sports related to me. Getting injured in a heroic way, sacrificing myself for a point or save.

Now, I'm mildly concerned that it's the sorta romanticized capitalized view of working long hours/for unreasonable clients/for surviving in a romanticized 'starving artist way' and then bragging about it - usually with embellishments/focusing on past extremes. 'oh, woe is me. please care for me. or declare yourself similarly harmed so we can share the misery.

the sport injury fantasies were more fun. Even after I got knocked out by a soccer ball in real life.

this is just a random fear that popped into my head but do you think that if you were the suspect in a murder case, the prosecution could use your whump blog/whump posts as evidence against you? like obviously I know that liking whump doesn't equal enjoying RL violence (like i can barely even watch someone trip without wincing) but couldn't it be used as evidence of your character (even incorrect as it is) to convince a jury that didn't know better of your intentions?

i know you probably have zero actual legal knowledge to respond to this with it's just an irrational fear that suddenly hit me lol

TBH, I don't really know the answer to that. Though all things considered, I have a therapist who says straight up that writing is healthy and such, despite the nature of the writing (he even said that he'd be MORE concerned if I stopped writing) so I'm sure that a judge would be aware that it was just for writing my stories, so I'm not that worried about that I guess?

I'm a big fan of amnesia episodes. We as a society have to bring that back. Idk that rl amnesia doesn't really work that way. Boink your faves on the head and make them wander around confused please.

Oh man me too nonny!!! I love those types of episodes!! My absolute favorites are Murdoch Mysteries 3x01 "The Murdoch Identity", The Mentalist 4x10 "Fugue in Red", and MacGvyer 2x21 "DOA MacGyver". All of these come with such great whump that lead to the amnesia and then the angst of not knowing who they are is so good. I love it

It’s been a very long time since I spent a night in the hospital. Having done so last night (I’m fine, should be discharged today) I find I kinda hate them a lot.

It’s not the staff’s fault. They’ve all been super nice and professional. But I’m looking at the glow of the sunrise over the Comfort Inn while having gotten literally 30 minutes of sleep last night.

It’s hard to sleep when you’re in pain, even if objectively it’s not that bad. The problem is that lying there in the semi-dark, there’s nothing else to focus on.

The nurse call button attached to the bed has a soft electronic glow, inches from your face. The bed has subdued lights. The computer that gives your info to the nurse adds its own blue ambiance to the room.

We may have moved past the era where patients’ vitals were repeatedly checked at night, but there are still things that happen. Someone needs to attach a monitor. The attending wants to give you an update on where things stand. This medication needs to be taken now.

And though people try to be quiet, there are the constant thumps and bumps of activity in other rooms, quiet conversations in the hall, the beeping of someone else’s monitor.

Oh, and depending on what you have attached to you…you may not be able to roll over in bed. Are you a stomach or side sleeper? Too bad. Lie on your back, stare at the sign on the ceiling that says Call Don’t Fall, and wait for morning.

…OTOH, you can take notes for writing purposes. Silver lining? 🙃

I was down with the flu for almost a week, and it threw a wrench in my writing. Picked it back up today, so here’s the status update.

300 words into an Athos whump one-shot for Febuwhump. I’ve missed putting my favorite Musketeer through hell. Sorry not sorry. ☺️

Nope, not planning on really doing Febuwhump. Work and RL will intensify as of next week, so no time. I will try to fill the occasional prompt for different fandoms, though. No promises

650 words into my 7th installment for my Spn Damage Control series. Remember Dean getting hit in the face with a rifle butt in 1x12 Scarecrow? Turns out he didn’t simply walk that off. At least not in my ficlet.

Adding to the “why kink” convo:

I have a CNC/rape kink IRL, and also go fucking feral for anything where a man gets sexually tortured and mentally tormented to the point where they can no longer function as people (in fiction only).

I think the CNC/rape definitely just… happened. Like, I was 6 and I would already find myself intrigued by power dynamics and abuse in cartoons or other media I was exposed to. I remember my fave character in any show would be the hottest one that also was powerful and cruel, bonus points if they regularly got other characters bleeding, crying or traumatised.

Also the interest in really extreme stuff. I remember being 6 or 7 and looking up on Google things like bestiality (I did not have the term at the time, just used more clumsy words to find it) and being unable to comprehend why there were no results — obviously it’s illegal, but I was so fucking young that I didn’t even understand what it was really or what my curiosity implied. What I did know is that I was drawn to something painful and forbidden and dirty and extreme. I was reading rapefic from the age of 12. Before that, I was already reading explicit fic from age 10, and I would actively look for rough sex or no-prep anal. I was watching DP and big things shoved into small places from around that time too! I was on pornhub searching for stuff like gangbang, cream pie, rape(which had no results and frustrated me terribly because I still didn’t understand the implications or legalities of what attracted me so much) . And when I finally (finally!) discovered BDSM and got reading up on sadomasochism it’s like a whole world blossomed in front of my eyes. It was amazing and validating and inspiring. And I’m sure if someone were to look into my brain or something maybe they’d find a reason here and there as to why maybe I’m into it, but I still think it just happened. I was born with it and that’s it.

Now, in regards to my whump kink (which is very much focused on men) I do have to agree with that other anon in regards to that sex = violence mentality. As I entered the world of sex, specifically with men (I’m a woman), I was forced to learn this the hard way. Sex is violence, often. And not the fun kind that I wanted to explore, but rather the terrible kind that makes you hate yourself on a visceral level. And I think I developed this men-only-whump kink because, yes, I have a pre-existing interest in sadomasochism, but also because it’s a way to gain control, I guess? And because when the one suffering is a man I am more able to separate myself from that reality — I’m not forced to have flashbacks to when I was sexually assaulted or made to feel unsafe, used, or hollow. I can just enjoy my kink from a distance. Also there’s definitely something that feels very “wrong” in hurting a man in all the ways that women are often hurt, and that feeling excites me as much as it revindicates me.

I also want to note that I would be profoundly distressed by seeing/doing anything remotely violent/non consensual to anybody ever in my RL. Kink can and often does exist within its own parameters, eg. on tv where we know everything’s fake. Or in bed with someone we trust and have explored the scene in detail beforehand. Kink is not (or it shouldn’t be) ever at the expense of other non-consenting human beings.

I'm lovingly catching up on everything after a week busy proofreading (I will never ever be a professional spell checker, mad respect to all of them, I kinda want to gouge my eyes out) and while I do, I wanna ask, how are the two February prompts list looking ? Did you get enough prompts for both ?

I'm slowly picking my way through them - RL has been a little overwhelming at the moment, but writing short things again is fun, tbh. I'm using some of the prompts, though if an unprompted ship appeals more I've been going with that, too.

So far what I've got is:

For the femslash prompts, 1 is Aurra/Shmi, 2 is Depa/Luminara, 3 is Kycina/Fay.

For the whump prompts, 1 is Grey/Depa, 2 is Tarre/Fox, 3 is Steve Rogers/Marc Spector, 4 is Tarre/Jaster.
