there was a loud ringing in her ears and she was unsure of how long the blackout in her vision had really lasted. at first, she has trouble focusing her gaze on derek when he appears in front of her. instinctively, her hand clasps onto his forearm where his hand is touching her cheek. she can feel that. as for whatever he's saying, she has no idea. his lips are moving, but her brain can't process enough for her to try to read them.

on the other side of the warehouse, the police are starting to process the crime scene -- the body of her assailant in the middle of a pool of blood. she assumed that he was shot by derek, but she couldn't be too sure. it all had happened so damn fast. a realization that she wasn't face to face with a supernatural being, but a regular human. a human that had tortured and murdered ten women before he had attempted to do the same to her. she had planted herself as bait for the worst kind of monster.

wide eyes transfixed on derek's in an expression that could only be described as dazed, she tried to let his closeness, his touch ground her. as some of the adrenaline slowly dwindled away, searing pain in the back of her head but whether she was completely within her senses or not it was something that she would brush off. there were more important things than her being injured.

❝ one of your monsters, derek -- he was one of your monsters. ❞ those were only words she could string together as the pace of her breaths slowed along with her heart rate. when she truly came to her senses she would be embarrassed of this moment -- and spend a lot more time honing in on her fighting skills and stamina. she had let the man get an upper-hand and she was better than that. had the fact that the man had been merely human really had that much of an impact on her?
