PART ONE OF MY WILLIAM MILLER AU!!! THIS TOOK SO LONG BUT IM SO PROUD!!! Most of this is the setup of how this happened, so if I find the motivation to actually continue this (more likely than not) then you’ll get some (half written) plot!!!
Part #2
If you liked this, PLEASE consider reblogging. I worked really hard on this and it would mean a lot to me if you helped this reach more people >.<

Today we take a brief break from the model horses for the model PONIES! 🤣 That is to say, My Little Pony customs in progress! If you’ve been following along, it’s been almost (more than!?) a year at this point that I’ve been struggling with the “perfect” match for this Baby Melody, and I think I’ve come quite close! Catching Covid definitely threw me for a loop, especially in terms of motivation - I haven’t made a custom pony yet this year! 😵‍💫 But I’m very VERY pleased with how this dye came out, even if it isn’t exactly perfect matches for the Dreamboat and Near and Dear babies I was hoping. I think they’re quite close, and very cute on their own! One haired baby Moondancer was left as-is, and one got to go QUITE dark! Maybe an alt Baby Ribbon? And of course some cute sparkle baits from HQG1C had to join in! 🤣 What would YOU do with this bunch? 🤩

White Shirts Meet Rit Dye Formulas
The Dress Doctors long held that white blouses were not the most flattering choice save for the select few with perfect complexions. Instead, they counseled their students to select from the many tints or pastels to choose something more flattering. From what they wrote, seeking out such alternatives was not that hard at the time. But the garment industry today seems to insist we must all wear white--maybe it is simply easier for them to make essentially one color?--and most of what is offered in solid blouses are whites.
I inherited this lot of white blouses and decided to experiment. I used formulas found at the Rit Dye website and then added a wee bit more or less based on what I saw going on in the hot water in my top-loading washing machine. The results were very good. The pale peach cotton on the left turned out perfectly and the mother-of-pearl buttons took on the color too. The linen blouse on the right in terra cotta is now my warm autumn weekend shirt worn with khaki, or espresso. Notice that the thread, being polyester, remained white on the top-stitching. The coral cotton shirt in the back bleached a bit too easily while drying in the sun, so it may be I did not keep it in the washer long enough?
Do you have something white or pale in a natural fabric that doesn't work for you? Could you live with the thread staying the same color after dyeing? More than once I have saved a garment I never wear via dye, so now I always ponder the possibilities of dyes before I give away or throw away.
The Rit website has an enormous amount of useful information here: https://www.ritdye.com/

ooo i recently dyed something for the first time too! (it was fabric) and it wasn’t as hard as i thought it’d be tbh, just a long process. if you’re thinking about doing it with ritdye they have a colour formula page that tells you how much of each dye to use for a specific colour that i found super helpful! i think it would look hilarious making dragon soup hahaha. though it was a bit costly given how much dye there is in a bottle i’m not likely to ever use up, it was still fun :)
dragon soup !! I’d take so many pictures and then probably drop my phone in the pot on accident lol
maybe over a holiday weekend when I have more time. but I’d also be nervous to dye a $32 jellycat and have it turn out bad, even with the instructions… idk.
and the white one has to come back in stock first. the last time I signed up to get an email when it restocked, I was five minutes late and it already sold out again. pain.
but I shall keep youse updated if I do try it!!

This is my latest collection of hand-dyed fabric. I dye in small batches, one yard at a time. I used a very different technique this time, where I folded the fabric into pleats before folding again into a packet, held together with clips and immersed in the dye bath. Dyes used: Sangria & Power Berry Procion is from #DharmaTrading, Navy Procion and Black RIT Dye is from Blick Art #handdyed #fabricdyeing #Prociondyes #RITdyes #pattern #textiledesign #blickartmaterials https://www.instagram.com/p/CD2iu3BB3rB/?igshid=sauifc70r5al

Sewing a top and skirt
I’m re-doing my Blaze (streets of rage) cosplay. I just sewn a top and skirt myself and dyed it red.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I simply cut out one sleeveless top pattern and one skirt pattern out of paper.
I pinned and cut out the pattern twice (the front and back of the clothing piece) on some fabric- cotton.
I sewn together the back and the front pieces of the top and skirt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I cut out and sewn a waist band for the skirt.
Tumblr media
I sewn a zipper to the back of the skirt .
Tumblr media
I used RIT fabric dye in Cherry Red and dyed the fabric.
Follow directions on the bottle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sewn in the waist band a little so it’ll fit a bit better.
Personally the dye wasn’t very evenly coated on the fabric but, I still like how it came out. Also, I like that the fabric is somewhat tattered too, I find it fitting to the video game.
I have red boots and a black leather jacket that help complete this cosplay- Blaze from Streets of Rage.
Thought I’d share :)

also fun fact about WM Dave, his hair isn't actually real. He found a wig in a dumpster, gave it a bad haircut (but one he liked) and ruined one of jack's pots with too much ritdye he stole to dye it. The racoon stripes are just sharpie.

Happy #wipwednesday ! This is a project that I started several months ago and got a little stuck on. I thought, dip dyed hair looks so cool!! I’ll make some too!! So when I dyed my huge herd of ponies, I added some hair hanks to the dipping rotation! But now I’m struggling to visualize what kind of pony would actually have this hair. I think the white hank would look really cool on a black glitter base, but is that too simplistic? I loved the idea of the black-rainbow combo being like a rainbow pony with her roots growing out (or a gothic rainbow pony! Or rainbow balayage!) and now I’m struggling to visualize it! So now you guys get to look at them and help me spitball ideas! 🤣 (To be used in a project probably a year from now, in all honesty LOL!) #ponygurucustom #ritdye #nylonhair https://www.instagram.com/p/CrPW_ysJP4O/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Why Grey Rit Dye Is So Useful: Big Blooms Overdress Bias Tape
I have learned that having a bit of grey Rit Dye and a dedicated pot for dyeing only turns out to be very useful. I have been using Rit dyes for years, on yardage and on garments, always the union dyes, which combine dyes for both animal fibers like silk and plant fibers like cotton.  Rit has now branched out a bit and has more targeted dyes which mean less dye going down the drain unused. Grey can help darken or dull a fabric when what you have is too bright. As when I had bought a too bright green because I could not find a match for a print, and then added grey to turn it sage.
The silk organza overdress I am making has French seams for all the vertical and horizontal seams, but my being able to pulled off clean French seams on the set-in sleeve seams seemed unlikely. I feared lots of wrinkles would result. So I decided to use a bias-fold tape.
Now, if I had a matching silk fabric that I could dye, that would be perfect, but I had nothing on hand and a deadline to meet, so I rifled through my notions and found some scarlet commercial bias-fold tape. Such tapes only come in a few limited colors. It is a cotton/poly blend, a bit tougher fabric for a lightweight one, which may be all to the good since armhole seams do take more stress than other seams.
You see the first result of overdyeing with grey over scarlet. Then I added a cup of water to the dye bath, weakening the dye mixture, sampled again and the results were a perfect match.

SEWING: TOPS AND FEELING SPRING-Y
My daughter and I were feeling pretty Spring-y in our coordinating #memade tops 🌺🌹And guess what?!? Both of these were #madewithartparts made with salvaged materials from @artpartscrc in Boulder.  1) My top is a lovely cotton broderie anglaise that was sort of “peptobismol” pink- ish. I dyed it with RIT dye and I love the burgundy color that resulted. I made myself this @fibremood #fibremoodlola top, and love it.
2) @nadia_the_triple_threat found this cute floral scrap of quilting cotton and squeezed out a sleeveless #m7899 with a couple of small denim straps from the stash.
AND THE PANTS!
I styled the #fibremoodlola with white wide-legged pants here, in a dreamy deadstock Rag and Bone cream twill from Mood fabrics that became my 9th or 10th pair of @annaallen-clothing #persephonepants. I can't wait to wear these more when then weather is warmer.

So I had some babies.  PLURAL.  I still can’t believe it sometimes! They are growing up so fast already, and going from 1 to 3 boys 23 months apart really makes life a blur in the best way possible.  It’s been exciting and hectic all at the same time, as colic is no joke with one baby let alone two.  Eddie has had his toes painted purple for all 8 weeks of his life because I haven’t been able to tell them apart until just this week!  Them being identical twins has been a very real test of my observational skills as an artist.  After a week or so I realized their ears were just ever so slightly different, and I posted a picture of their ears in every room of the house to help train myself to tell them apart without ripping open the footies of their pajamas to see who I was holding.
Being a mom makes you learn a lot about yourself and all of the things you didn’t know you could be or even wanted to be.  My 20 something self would probably look at my life now and be terrified that I haven’t drawn, illustrated, or painted anything in months for commission.  Being a mom of one is a shock to the system of a life that you are used to living for yourself-- Goodbye to doing what you want when you want it.  Being a mom of three is more acceptance mode.  I’m the last one to have real clothes on for the day, eat a meal, fall asleep.... But I don’t have a problem with it being that way!  This is the gig I signed up for, and its rewards come in the form of baby smirks and toddler giggles!
Between being a boy mom of three and being home because of COVID for almost eight months now, I’ve learned so much about the important things in life.  Teaching is very important to me, and so is making art.  But molding good humans in the world is my #1 job-- my tiny ones and myself first (because I can’t teach them if I don’t work on myself), and then the big kids at school.  This time home with my dudes has been invaluable, and it also makes me realize what a big risk parents take on teachers when their kids are put into our classrooms.  We all want the adults in our kids’ lives to love them and support them as much as we do.
These days my next coloring book is on hold while I play trucks and trains with Frank, snuggle the babies, and read books to all three of them.  I’m sure I will go back to it all one of these days, but until then, I have to find other sneaky ways to get my creativity fix. Like.... dying fabric.  re-learning shibori.  Learning how to put up shelves and sheetrock.  Designing halloween costumes and birthday cakes. Experimenting with recipes. Making tall towers and ramps out of bristle blocks with Frank so he can knock them down and drive his trucks through them.
I guess I’m also learning that creativity comes in many forms, and it doesn’t always have to be paint and paper.  Deep down I knew this, but I thought other creative outlets would be less fulfilling.  I don’t feel any less fulfilled now than I do when I’m drawing and painting landscapes.  I think what I’ve realized is that I can still be a good teacher, artist, and mom as long as I’m finding ways to spread kindness, experiment creatively, take risks, and learn new things.  Life comes at you fast, and it’s never the same for long... Gotta keep evolving with each season!
This next season is scary for me. Going back to work in the time of COVID, and leaving my babies, especially Frank, after 8 months at home. Time together is going to get more scarce, but it will just force us to be more creative about how we make time for one another.  Stay safe out there you guys, and make some time to learn something new you’ve been putting off for awhile <3.

What are your favorite gowns, outfits, armors, any look from fiction?? . . The lake dress was always a big favorite for me!! When I was little and first saw Attack of the Clones, I told my mom I wanted Padmé’s pretty dress, to which she promptly responded that I could only have it if I had somewhere to wear it (the closest she ever got to saying no to a costume). So when I started cosplaying I knew that this had to be one of my first projects (though in retrospect, maybe I should have waited until I had a little more experience with sewing or dyeing or anything???) . . But I also love so many other looks from fantasy and fiction!! Just about everything Inara Serra wears in Firefly, Arwen Undómiel’s whole aesthetic in Lord of the Rings, and of course, we can’t forget the 2015 Cinderella ballgown that just brings me to tears watching the skirts just swoosh through the air!! (Are you sensing a trend here 😬😬😬) . . So I’m super curious what other looks from sci fi, fantasy, comics, any sort of fictional realm, you guys love!? Tell me, I’m dying to know!! . . And while I have you, please check out my story for resources on how to help Lebanon following the massive explosion that has devastated Beirut. . .
