Anyway the literal entire audience for this fic is ‘me’, but that’s because I’m still feral and having feelings about Rita Douglas after Invisible Sun and THAT ENDING, eighteen months on.

How Rita is an actress now stuck in a permanent role that she can’t escape, but also Miriam’s been in that position twice (and shed Helge but created Commissioner Miriam Burgeson) and Erasmus also once long ago was Joshua Cooke until he sacrificed EVERYTHING to the fire of the Revolution.

How being a Burgeson is a choice but also not a voluntary one, it’s assigned by fate, and so Erasmus-Miriam-Rita are family by biology and marriage but also by the decision that they’re all Burgesons, and how each of them is in their way trapped by that decision. Because for each of them, to live in the Commonwealth requires them to be a Burgeson and to sacrifice for the Party.

And Rita’s sacrifice to the Party is to both inhabit the role it has created for her (acknowledged daughter of Commissioner Miriam Burgeson), but also to offer up her relationship with Angie on the altar of revolutionary progress as a vehicle for social change, and she doesn’t really have a choice about it because she needs somewhere safe to live, but also agreeing to do it is fundamentally a choice she MUST make, because otherwise she’s back to living a lie and hiding herself in the way she originally escaped from Alabama to avoid.

(And also Rita’s still a little brown lesbian communist sleeper-agent/spy, and she’s an unwitting sleeper agent for TWO different failed states which would have despised each other, and I love her and get more feral every time I think about it)

Me: huzzah I might have actually finished this 3/4 done fic I’ve had hanging around for over a year.

Also me: of course it’s the Merchant Princes Stross one, so 6 whole people might care and I get to set up ANOTHER fandom on AO3. It’s only the third time this has happened.

Yonderland is the greatest and most bonkers show I've ever watched - there's a talking stick called Nick, a tuneantula, a glorious crone, and three completely incompetent henchdemons (Geoff, Rita, and Neil are icons, though).

The only normal thing about this show is pretty much every Simon Farnaby character getting naked...

This thing that happened between the two of you, he knows you need to talk about it but he’s not sure he’s ready just yet. You’re going to tell him that it was a mistake, that it shouldn’t have happened and he knows that he’ll agree with you despite the fact every fibre of his being tells him otherwise.

His gaze strays to your desk and his thoughts travel back to the storm once again.

POSSIBLE GOOD OMENS SPOILERS

You have been warned, please don’t spoil yourself. This refers to books referenced in S2 of Good Omens, but I am not relating them to events or plot.

EDIT: @ineffable-romantics​​ gave some really excellent suggestions. Having rewatched and looked up their starting sentences, I think these are right. I suppose only Neil Gaiman or Douglas Mackinnon could confirm 100%. More below.
