Yes, this was a real thing we had to help with once.

Even though he complains, Donnie feels a lot of pride being looked to as the family expert for these things, I’m sure. For all that Splinter probably doesn’t know the deep intricacies of computers, I’ll bet he knows the basics. Could there be a deeper meaning to his confusion?

I personally headcanon that Splinter is the one who introduced computers, phones, and appliances to his sons way back in the dumpster diving days, and probably showed Donnie how to fix his first toaster or something. However, the special interest kicked in hard and pretty soon Donnie could run circles around Splinter when it came to fixing and engineering stuff. Perhaps, this is a way Splinter can find time to partake in Donnie’s interests and boost his confidence despite being way out of his depth on technical know-how himself.

When you don’t have a lot, it’s important to be resourceful and handy with a quick fix. Donnie had to have started building stuff somewhere!

It makes it all the more bittersweet if they were really close only to have Splinter struggle to bond with Donnie when he’s a little older. Don’t worry though, they’ll figure it out :)

This is such a funny father and son moment between these two, and I love it way too much.

Not only with Raph trying to get out of hearing a story from his dad that he's not interesting in/in the mood to hear, but also immediately wanting out the second he realizes it's about his dad's love life.

the resentment leo would have with splinter post-krang. i genuinely think they would take a bit for them to recover and be comfortable around each other

why do i think that? here’s some reasons. this is gonna be a HELLA long analysis so be prepared. sit down, grab some popcorn, and let’s dive in

in the movie, after raph was taken, leo goes on a whole rant about how he got the key, he gets the answers, and he will get raph back. yes this is irrational and brash, but not in leo’s eyes. in his eyes, this is a foolproof plan that will work

splinter attempts to intervene, and tell him like it is. “it’s not your plan, you need to work with your team.” however, it comes out as a sharp sting to leo’s previous attitude

“My son, listen to your team. This is not about you.”

it’s meant to be sensible and wise, but to leo, it’s a jab at him. it’s a stab at his cockiness and self-centered attitude, and it reminds leo of why they’re even in this position in the first place. which he hates

most of all, it’s splinter saying it. it’s his father telling him that it’s not about him. because to leo, he’s always been last place to splinter’s affection, and it’s like splinter’s confirming it here

don’t believe me? here:

splinter talks to leo, and it seems that for a minute, he listens to his father’s words. that maybe he should really stop and listen. maybe he should stop and think of a plan, listen to his brothers’ input.

but the second splinter says it’s not about him? leo shuts down. he pulls away from splinter, and refuses to listen to him. and while splinter may be right, it was something leo never wanted to hear

it’s obvious that he has a somewhat testy relationship with his father, and splinter is trying to make up for it by giving leadership advice. but to leo? this is the guy who made him leader to seemingly mess with him, never bothered to give him attention or praise on his accomplishments, and never truly knew leo beyond his “acting as the best to save face” charade

which brings me to another reason. no, i do not think splinter was ever abusive or purposely neglectful to leo, or any of the boys for that matter. but its clear theres a bit of a rift between him and leo. i think that he kind of resents leo a bit (without meaning to) because he sees himself in him. he sees the irrational movie star who never thought ahead, and made too many mistakes to count

an example would be when leo got punched by lou jitsu two times. none of his brothers got punched, why just him? and sure it could be a running gag, but i find it also to be intentional

maybe deep down, splinter still resents leo for being so much like his irrational, unreasonable younger self. that every time he sees leo, he sees his stupid past self, and without meaning to, he at times hates leo because of it. and if he doesn’t hate him, he seems to resent him to some extent

splinter also has plainly stated that donnie was the funniest one to him, (s1ep 1, mystic mayhem) and outright laughed when leo asked if he was the favorite son (rottmnt wake-up alarms on youtube, timestamp 1:59) leo also staight-up said that he was splinter’s least favorite (s1ep 4b, down with the sickness)

so yeah, i can see the resentment leo may have for his father deep down. it could be pretty apparent post-krang, hidden behind his jokes and teases

now don’t get me wrong, they have their moments of bonding, and i do love to read little drabbles and fics where they hug and heal. however… realistically speaking, it would take a while for them to get to that stage of father-son bonding post-krang. with splinter naming him leader out of the blue, to the missing lou jitsu posters on the walls of leo’s room in the movie — and we’re definitely talking about that in a later post, trust — i would bet their relationship as father-son pre and post-movie would be extremely rocky.

another reasoning for this could be that splinter often underestimates and undermines leo’s abilities and accomplishments. far as i’ve seen, the most reaction splinter’s given to leo’s accomplishments is an eyebrow raise

for example, when outsmarting big mama, leo was genuinely proud of spending time w his dad and showing him his abilities. he genuinely thought they were working together. however, splinter didn’t say he was proud or anything, just complained he wished he’d brought donnie (s2ep 2, many unhappy returns)

“I knew I should have brought Purple.”

ouch. that mustve hurt a bit

and yes, i will admit, leo was being a bit of a little shit in this scene, and yes, he could’ve told splinter of the plan before starting to yap and blab to big mama about the plan he cooked up. however, the response splinter gives is not much better. essentially, he’s saying, “i don’t like this kid or his plan, so therefore i think i should’ve brought one of my favored children to solve the problem better.”

and before you go and tell me donnie could’ve outsmarted big mama the way leo did, think for a moment. leo fully admitted to manipulating and lying in an episode before

“I don’t lie, I just… change the truth.”

whereas donnie cannot tell a lie to save his life. i love him, but the guy is a shit liar. he has failed multiple times at it

“We are just typical normal humans.. who got lost in the middle of our normal… everyday human lives— nailed it.”

“Uh… nothing. Just having a typical, normal, mystic-free day.” “What? I said mystic-free.”

“Why aren’t you guys more upset?”

“Oh. This… hurts me. Uh… I’m very sad…?”

raph & mikey aren’t much better. mikey straight-up started sweating when he had to lie to splinter about piebald, and raph has so many different stinks/scents to him that it’d be easy for others to tell he was lying

also, mikey has doctor delicate touch. who does not know what lying or “don’t be blunt” means

and donnie’s really only being extremely straightforward with what he thinks or about what’s going on around him. so it makes no sense as to why splinter would want to bring donnie along to outsmart big mama, unless he genuinely doesn’t enjoy leo’s presence, which seems to be the case

now all of this is evidence to point towards a very unsteady father-son relationship with these two. yes, splinter seems to be a very lenient father, and i genuinely think he wants to be a good dad. however, oftentimes that leads to miscommunication and misread moments, empty promises, and overall neglecting behavior on his part, all without meaning to

so while he does try harder to be there for his sons later in the show, it’s pretty obvious that one brother — who thrived off any attention possible — probably stopped caring about that validation after all that he went through. splinter gives, but leo doesn’t take. he doesn’t bother to, because he thinks it’s either a prank of some kind, or because he just genuinely doesn’t care for his father’s input anymore.

Rise August: Couch Potato

Alt version with my own style-ish design changes for the characters

I've seen a few artists do their own iterations of TMNT so I guess this would be mine? My iteration based off the Rise designs? I suppose?? Idk I do too much stuff anyway so let's move on — but I did draw this version first and then got too in my head about whether or not people would like it so I uh redrew it because I'm a coward so here's the secret version:

I made Splinter have a more similar colour scheme to the 2012 Splinter, a brown rat with some pale marks and stubble on his face and tail.

The boys have slightly altered green tones — slightly darker shades than usual. They all also have facial marks, and I gave Raph his own birthmarks!! Their shell designs and stuff have simplified, no outlines, just solid colour (same with Leo's banana marks).

Raph is probably the biggest change — he has birthmarks, extra spiky scales, and tons of red in his skin!

I put in my own art style bits for this as well: I try to draw Rise as close to the actual style as I can, but for this I wanted to go for more of my style traits. The knees have swirls and the limbs are a bit more loose. There's some more detail and strands in the hair for Splinter. Raph's toes are claw-like. The boys' hands are rounded out, a lil' pudgy. I prefer drawing rounder edges, so I included a lot of those. I also (on occasion) do this style thing with my lineart where I add some shades and tones to it so it has multicolour... things? I dunno what to call it, but it looks dope as heck. Only issue with the art choice is it takes a while to draw so I don't do it a lot, only for special art pieces (like this one)!

It was in their first week on the surface when Yoshi realized it. The entire process had been pretty rough, but today had been particularly rough, and as he stared down the barrel of the daunting task of preparing dinner for his four children, he quickly found himself overwhelmed. A thread of panic beginning to light through him as he struggled to figure out how he was going to manage to feed his children tonight. He was just so exhausted.

And then he had a very sudden epiphany. 

He… didn’t have to make anything.

There was literally nothing stopping him from just… ordering delivery. 

It had been so long, he had almost forgotten that that was something that a person could do. He had almost forgotten that there were other people in the world that he could rely on for some things.

And suddenly, a tiny bit of the crushing weight of keeping four small children alive lifted ever so slightly from his shoulders. And before he knew it there were tears on his face.

“Guys!” Mikey squeaked, rushing from the kitchen back into the living room to rejoin his brothers, with absolute stars in his eyes.

“What is it, Mikey?” Raph questioned, looking up from the board game Donnie was attempting to teach them to play. They had never had so many toys in their lives before, and they were all eager to try them all out.

“Daddy said we’re gonna order pizza a'night!” Mikey enthused, his eyes wide as he skidded to a stop. His brothers blinked at him, and Leo tilted his head in confusion.

“...So?” They had been having lots of new foods lately. What was so exciting about this one?

“He’s so excited about it, he’s crying!” Mikey exclaimed. “So it must be really, really, really good! Probably the bestest food in the entire world!”

Could you create a headcanon for ‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ about what kind of fathers Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey would be? I find this idea fun. :3

Headcanon: Rise!Turtles being dads and sweetest husband to the reader (Separate) (Requested prompt)

A/N: I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of aging up the guys towards "mature content."

However, this idea was really cute. It only made sense for this prompt where the guys are aged up with some reference to their bad end!future selves. I went with around early 30's when the turtle of your choice and the reader are in a committed relationship and currently raising a kid at the moment.

So please have common sense and think before typing some snarky response with 'oh aged up content is bad lol' (Because I will put those ideas on the 'do not write list' if people get too weird about it...)

Raph

You know how he has the habit of that one baby voice with Mayhem. (and a bit of the hey buddy tone towards Mikey or Donnie)

- His kid is never gonna escape from it. (even by the time the kid is a grown up)

He definitely panicked for a bit when his kid (during the energetic toddler phase) enjoyed climbing over a big guy like him.

- So he had to ask Donnie to make a battle shell specifically as a soft cushion. So the spiky shell doesn't accidentally scratch the kid.

Part of him is worried anytime he has to scold his kid. And only when you're around is when he feels okay to do so.

- He definitely does the "Did you ask (Y/N) if you could have another cookie?" sort of question. (Sometimes willing to go along with what his kid wants or following (Y/N) if he got caught spoiling the kid)

You're getting at least one peck on the cheek by the end of the day.

- Or earlier in the day if he accidentally woke you up.

Compared to his younger self who slightly whined about chores, he grew to enjoy it when both of you worked on it together.

- Laundry being one example where you're usually folding clothing fresh from the dryer. And he stacks a pile back into the clean basket/hamper.

His eyesight in the right eye has gotten a bit worse. (not as bad as his bad end counterpart where he needs an eyepatch) But, you often act as his extra set of eyes and call out to any surprise attacks.

- Which earned the title of you two with a tag team couple and he still blushes thinking about it.

Leo

Every few hours before a night patrol, he always checks in to see what his kid is up to and often gives a hug before leaving.

Often gives bedtime stories through retellings of Lou Jitsu's movies or Jupiter Jim's comics.

- Even acting out of some of the scenes before a yawn decides its time to sleep.

Gave one of his spare bandana scarves to his kid.

- Had the biggest grin on his face when the kid realized "Oh hey! We're matching!!!"

Almost similar to the night patrol part, but if you can't make it because of work or some other boring life detour.

- Its a portal away for a light hang out sesh. For both of you to take a breather away from the grown up life.

Late night conversations are just a regular thing between the two of you.

- Especially when he couldn't sleep. By the time he almost dozes off to sleep in your arms, he still playfully teases you that your voice is soothing to him.

When light conversations about the bad end future was brought up during a casual match of video games, he was never used to the idea that he had a prosthetic arm.

- You instantly hugged his right arm, jokingly reassuring him.

"As long as you can crack a joke in the most serious moment. I'll still know that its you Leo."

"Even in a timeline where, me and the guys were raised by Draxum?"

You gave the red slider turtle a 'really?' pout before he hugged you into his lap.

"Nah I'm just kidding, but for real though. Draxum's former henchmen are still goofballs that know their way around the city. I'm pretty sure that Leo could get a couple of one liners and maybe from you as well."

Donnie

Almost went into a frenzy trying to child-proof the lair. (Especially the month before the kid's arrival changed the atmosphere) But eventually settled down.

- Realizing it would have stressed his kid out by any sudden new changes (and a bit of his family and your help explaining the reasoning as well)

Leo's showboating energy transferred to him but, in a way that, the softshell turtle is very grateful. That he has you as a spouse and both of you raising a kid along side his sentient inventions. And will try to bring it up in any conversation.

- The whole wallet photo gag of him showing family pictures. You love this silly turtle but, usually lightly pinch his face if its the wrong time for that.

He lights up whenever his kid goes to him for any sort of question.

- He slightly restrains himself to avoid going overboard with the answer. But, his kid is smart enough to know that and sometimes tells you that he's not being himself again.

Cannot force himself to sleep unless you're beside him. (or if you have to drag him to bed yourself)

- The few times where he woke up while you were still sleeping. He always gives you a light hug and a kiss on the forehead before getting out of bed.

He subtly took interest in one of your hobbies. (Either an ongoing or a new one) Just so he can step away from a tedious project that was going nowhere and not bother you with the boring details about it.

- Sometimes mentioning a fun fact to impress you.

You gave into his idea of letting your kid have a similar weapon like Casey Jr's.

- Only when they reached their 13th birthday and learning the basics of: constructing it and fixing parts along side their dad. How to use it defensively, offensively, and etc.

Mikey

Considering how his future self had some hair on his head, he kept it long so he can do a few matching embarrassing baby photos to his kid.

- Like giving the kid a tiny ponytail and etc. He definitely cried a bit while having his signature grin when the kid pulled too hard on his hair, laughing at one of his jokes. And you had to step in to help him.

He knows how to work around some of his kid's picky eating habits. Usually making sure his kid is having fun or decorating the plate in an artistic manner.

- However, there are times when the kid can hide the veggie or fruit out of plain sight. Or his kid asks his uncles for help when Mikey's focused on some other thing.

Absolutely does that peek-a-boo trick with hiding his face or whole body into his shell.

- He was nervous at first, if the trick might have scared his kid but, no the kid was giggling. Curiously crawling towards him in awe of it.

Will sometimes make meals ahead of time. (often being, if you returned from work, too exhausted to greet him)

- Either leaving a note on a plastic container in the fridge of: [(Y/N)'s breakfast: DO NOT EAT unless you want an surprise session with Dr Delicate Touch </3] (this also applies to lunch as well)

On very rare occasions, he will temporary wear a cloaking brooch. If you're at an area isn't very friendly towards mutants and/or yokai.

- The one time that happened, is when you forgot to bring your lunch at a job that barely lasted a week. (Stuff that was out of your control but, he was relieved that you got out of that place before your coworkers decided to physically fight back at the manager)

Spends at least one day in the week with you to do some light meditative exercises.

- On the really bad days, he doesn't mind letting you hold his hand as a stress ball or just have a quiet moment to relax while his brothers babysit your kid.

Well, Ron did announce that Rise will come back for more seasons, so let's haul this beast out again.

Had a dream about the 2003 boys meeting the 2018 boys and it. Was. Epic.

So, poor 2003 Leonardo, he didn’t know what the heck to do with this. He spent his entire life being a responsible, overprotective, golden boy master of self discipline and strategy because he desperately needed to show his family and clan how hard he worked and how good he was, and he suffered through his own violent personal hells until he was broken from post traumatic stress and he still forced himself to carry all that weight… and here was another version of him who was just a bit younger and who didn’t even understand this concept of epic heavy deep personal responsibility, because he was a blissful kid who didn’t have to grow up under the shroud of being responsible during times of permanent war inside and out. This Leo was brashly overconfident just as much as he was quietly insecure but he didn’t hide and smother himself, he glomped onto his brothers and confessed his sads like therapy. And they hugged. They HUGGED ALL THE TIME. 2003 Leo couldn’t quite understand why all the hugging all the time. And Little Leo let loose with quips, dad jokes, snark, and great love like it was a career option. What the hell, 2003 Leo kept thinking. That’s all the stuff I wanna do, that’s how I would be without all this heavy and responsibility. How often do I get to safely break out the shitty jokes without losing face? What the heck happened or didn’t happen to let this boy be like how I could have been?

And then they met 2018 Splinter, and 2003 Leo just stood frozen, gaping in puzzled disbelief and pure stunned realization, like … OH. Okay. I get it. This Splinter is the result of shoving away his traumatic past and turning into a snarky, cynical, lackadaisical uncle type who has had enough of his darkness and just wants to be left alone while making sure his children are prepared for the world. Damn it, why can’t he be MY DAD.

Later in the dream, 2003 Leo considers adopting 2018 Mikey and running away with him to learn how to be carefree and have a cinnamon roll to protect, but 2018 Leo catches on and challenges him to a sword fight, stealing one of his katanas because forget my magic odachi, I wanna be honorable bitch, and 2003 Leo is SO PROUD of this fiery little trash lord him who really is a Leonardo, just without the darkness.

Meanwhile, 2018 Michelangelo is still tied up in the corner (because 2003 Leo had to stop him squirming) shouting encouragement to both of them. And 2003 Leo just…. breaks down LAUGHING. Like, this is amazing. And then both Raphaels turn up ready to beat him up for trying to kidnap the baby. And 2003 Raph just does not understand why his Leo is on the floor giggling so hard he’s snorting. And then everyone else shows up and 2003 Mikey starts laughing too and explains everything because he is an utterly intuitive walking pop culture encyclopedia and Meme Grandpa who knows exactly what his Leo is on about.

At the end of the dream, they’re all crowded around the 2018 media room watching Lou Jitsu, while the Donnies and Mikeys are yelling at the tablets 2018 Don gave them because now they’re on the internet with the memes, and 2003 Donnie is literally You Kids These Days Don’t Even Know - oh hey by the way, we got Utrom technology at home, so who wants some uranium to make functional toys with!

Aaand the 2018 brothers have to dive bomb him screaming NOOoOO as 2018 Donatello gets a wide glint in his eyes, stands up forcefully, and thrusts his fists to the sky screaming YEESSSS

… and the 2003 boys are horribly confused and have been absolutely flattened by Big Child Raph who is just holding them all at once muttering bad idea bad idea and Don is starting to realize his mistake with dawning horror while 2018 Splinter has fallen off his chair laughing and 2018 April has facepalmed so hard she left a bruise

And then I woke up GIGGLING.

Gonna re-watch 2007 just to listen to Mako get excited about the leftover birthday cake that Michelangelo brings home.

Also, I'm changing directions on that 2003 fic where Splinter accidentally screws up Mikey because the Tribunal forced him. 03 Splinter has made his mistakes but he was a rat raised by humans and he's still learning, just like his children.

HI sudden realization about Rise Splinter!

So I was talking with @brightlotusmoon (typical TMNT nerdiness) and we were talking about Splinter when mention of the Ancient One from 2003 came up. And then something occurred to me.

This guy–

-is actually a LOT like this guy:

Even ignoring body shape (and the extreme shortness), personality-wise they’re actually pretty similar. Even down to having been portrayed as kind of gross early on during their appearances in either series.

Up to and including the initial approach of “Uh-huh. You think you’re doing well, you’re expecting praise or a clear explanation right this second, but how abouuuuuut– NO. You’re going to have to get over thinking my training style is bullshit if you want to advance any.”

(Really, the biggest difference personality-wise is the fact that Rise Splinter is pretty much the Ancient One, if the Ancient One was a dramatic AF actor who once reveled in being in the spotlight and getting enough attention to choke an elephant.)

So I’m saying it bluntly: I think the Rise writers deliberately did this as yet another subtle nod to 2003. I mean seriously, LOOK at the Ancient One later on (in-universe timeline-wise):

And now look at this goober:

THEY ALMOST HAVE THE SAME BEARD!

I would not be surprised if the creators have done it entirely on purpose.

And even if they haven’t, they probably started cackling over the similarities the moment one of them noticed anyway.
