My DIY ripstop worked!
Inspired by ripstop fabric, and by the idea of reinforcing stuff before it breaks, I machine-sewed a little grid along the inside part of the jeans where they always wear out first.
Tonight I was venting about an awful group project to a friend and I draped myself dramatically over the couch and felt something rip a little.
Tumblr media
Look! The rips stayed inside their little squares. Look how small it is! Look how easy it'll be to mend!
Ok actually since the fabric's been fading and the thread now looks really dark, I'll probably unpick the grid and sew it again. I'll do thread a shade lighter than the fabric currently is so it'll still match as fading continues.

Obscure design details for the Solfege and the Ragdolls?
(I think I know who your favourites might be djkjds)
I'll start with the Ragdolls as they're relatively quick, especially compared to the Solfege. Although their designs are simple, they each have designs features that relate to either their personality or location; Satin's dress is neat and frilly as she lives in a dressmaker's desk. Quilt helps tend to the royal gardens and has a flower attached to her head. Denim wears a little bowtie, representing their high-class attitude and love of parties. Ripstop is a rough and tumble adventurer, so has a zipper along his chest to store useful tools or things he finds.
Tumblr media
The Solfege are under the cut as there's a fair bit of rambling for them👀
Each Aspect of the Solfege has an epithet, and a large portion of their design is based around this epithet, along with their personality.
Do - The Flame. Her hair is half-shaved and spiky, to look like (very) stylised fire. The ragged hem of her skirt is styled in a similar way. Her outfit is made up of mismatched pieces, representing her uncertainty as de facto leader and lack of secure identity.
Re - The Sword. His bangs are styled to resemble the crossguard of his sword form, and the pattern of his jumpsuit is loosely based on his sword form, with the arms and upper torso representing the cross guard, and his legs and abdomen the blade (the jewel on his chest becomes the jewel on his pommel). His clothes are the most covering, fitting for the most reserved Aspect. He does feel his only identity is being that sword, after all.
Mi - The Knight. Dressed in the traditional knight aesthetic, although their arms and feet are bare as they technically don't need the armour, it's mostly for show. Their left arm guard doubles as a shield, with lots of spiky parts on their armour to invoke their dangerous side.
Fa - The Wild. She resembles a satyr (albeit with deer legs rather than those of a goat), both to bring animals and nature to mind, and to help her stand out amongst her fellow Aspects as the hermit of the group, rarely seen in civilisation. The hem of her top is slightly ragged, to emphasise her rough and wild nature, although her clothing is still clean, indicating some time spent in the company of others.
So - The Shield. As the most gentle and peaceful of the Aspects, she is a very soft shade of blue, with a long, flowing dress. Although it appears quite modest her arms are still exposed, to show despite her reserved demeanour she is still open and honest with her loved ones. Her hair frames her face, covering her forehead and cheeks as if shielding them, like her protective barriers.
La - The Scourge. A fierce fighter, his sharp horns are an immediate indicator for his threatening demeanour. He goes shirtless as he is confident and proud in his strength and abilities. His earrings, necklace and the cuffs around his ankles resemble those worn by local monks, as they have inspired his efforts to attain an inner peace.
Ti - The Orphic. As the most attention-seeking and (as far as he's concerned) beautiful Aspect, he has the longest and biggest hair of the group. The shortest Aspect, he stands on his tiptoes most of the time to try and appear taller.
Many of their design traits can be seen in their original combined form, Solfège proper. Predominantly monochromatic as they contain all colours, with eyes, earrings and an emblem in the seven colours of the Aspects. Solfège has long, flowing hair like Ti and Fa, with the legs of the latter, the horns of La, an X-shaped strap across their torso with a gemstone in the centre, similar to Re's jumpsuit, a flowing cloak like So's dress (but with a ragged hem like Do and Fa's clothes), and overlapping shoulderpads reminiscent of Do's overlapping top, and they carry a large arm shield like Mi. The similarities are loose, as it's a single being split into seven who each represent one small part, but you can see traits of each Aspect within Solfège.

Today's sewing was about fixing up some basics!
Tumblr media
First up, I put DIY ripstop in the important part of these new work shorts. (Yes they're solid dark black; I had to fuss with lighting to make this visible.) They're going to be replacing a pair that is too light-colored and shows marks where I sweat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next project was this Frankenstein shirt!
A few weeks ago, I dumpster-dove for some sealed bags of clothing. One keeper was a dark grey tank top with some lime green heathering and trim around the arms and neck. It's a men's XXL, so a size too long. I cut it shorter and kept the hem intact.
I also have a plain black shirt that I thrifted before realizing quite how short it was. I tried it, but as a busty woman working a cargo job, I didn't like everyone seeing most of my torso when I had to reach overhead.
Fortunately, both of these hems were almost exactly the same size. And it's jersey, so you can fudge it a little and no one will ever know. I used the smocking stitch on my machine because it's the only reliable stretch stitch that my lovely 1983 Kenmore can produce. It rumples a little, so I'll wash it to make it relax and then live with however it turns out. Success!

May I also recommend a technique I call DIY ripstop? Vaguely inspired by ripstop fabric which has neat little squares woven into it to help keep tears from spreading, and vaguely inspired by sashiko, which uses extra threads to reinforce worn fabric. In a fit of madness last summer, I found matching thread for every single pair of pants I own, and I did this to them.
Tumblr media
This is incredibly helpful because the threads take most of the wear. Polyester thread (almost every thread available is polyester) is stronger than the polycotton of most pants. When the raised threads rub on each other, they take a long time to actually wear through. Any rips that happen in the denim itself stay neatly contained inside their little boxes, which are then easy to fix.
You would feel like everyone would notice, but literally nobody does, because 1. it is Up In Your Undercarriage, 2. the thread matches, and 3. your undercarriage is shadowed anyway. I did mine by machine, but you could absolutely do it by hand. I'd recommend doing a reverse "pick stitch," so most of the thread is on the outside.
(Also, the comment you made about "reverse assless chaps" did make me laugh, but it also isn't the worst idea. I have a pair of very old, very mended jeans where I put a second layer of fabric under the wear zone, and it's still unnoticeable for the 3 reasons above.)
If you search "diy ripstop" on my blog, or scroll back a ways through "cj sews," you should find some more info on this! Happy making!
"Don't just throw ripped jeans away, you can repair them using these 10 cute Visible Mending techniques!!" unfortunately my friend the first point of failure for every single pair of jeans i have owned in my life has been the Crotch and Ass. Knees: fine, cuffs: fine; but 3 years in, and all that stands between the world and my astronaut-patterned taint is 0.5µm of denim worn so thin that every squat threatens to tear it to shreds like wet toilet paper. If the Tiktok craft community could figure out a way to resurrect jeans afflicted in such a way that doesn't involve adding a whole ass buttpatch like some sort of inverse assless chaps situation then that'd be great

Figured I'd try the sewing side of Tumblr to ask about ripstop nylon fabric to make a smaller puffalump with. Normally this is something I'd ask my Mom as she sews too, but this is a material that neither of us had used before. Is there anything I need to use on it before sewing like fray check the edges or is it fine as is? Does it take to fiber dyes well or should I stick to embroidery for any markings?
