My DIY ripstop worked!
Inspired by ripstop fabric, and by the idea of reinforcing stuff before it breaks, I machine-sewed a little grid along the inside part of the jeans where they always wear out first.
Tonight I was venting about an awful group project to a friend and I draped myself dramatically over the couch and felt something rip a little.
Tumblr media
Look! The rips stayed inside their little squares. Look how small it is! Look how easy it'll be to mend!
Ok actually since the fabric's been fading and the thread now looks really dark, I'll probably unpick the grid and sew it again. I'll do thread a shade lighter than the fabric currently is so it'll still match as fading continues.

Today's sewing was about fixing up some basics!
Tumblr media
First up, I put DIY ripstop in the important part of these new work shorts. (Yes they're solid dark black; I had to fuss with lighting to make this visible.) They're going to be replacing a pair that is too light-colored and shows marks where I sweat.

The next project was this Frankenstein shirt!
A few weeks ago, I dumpster-dove for some sealed bags of clothing. One keeper was a dark grey tank top with some lime green heathering and trim around the arms and neck. It's a men's XXL, so a size too long. I cut it shorter and kept the hem intact.
I also have a plain black shirt that I thrifted before realizing quite how short it was. I tried it, but as a busty woman working a cargo job, I didn't like everyone seeing most of my torso when I had to reach overhead.
Fortunately, both of these hems were almost exactly the same size. And it's jersey, so you can fudge it a little and no one will ever know. I used the smocking stitch on my machine because it's the only reliable stretch stitch that my lovely 1983 Kenmore can produce. It rumples a little, so I'll wash it to make it relax and then live with however it turns out. Success!

May I also recommend a technique I call DIY ripstop? Vaguely inspired by ripstop fabric which has neat little squares woven into it to help keep tears from spreading, and vaguely inspired by sashiko, which uses extra threads to reinforce worn fabric. In a fit of madness last summer, I found matching thread for every single pair of pants I own, and I did this to them.
Tumblr media
This is incredibly helpful because the threads take most of the wear. Polyester thread (almost every thread available is polyester) is stronger than the polycotton of most pants. When the raised threads rub on each other, they take a long time to actually wear through. Any rips that happen in the denim itself stay neatly contained inside their little boxes, which are then easy to fix.
You would feel like everyone would notice, but literally nobody does, because 1. it is Up In Your Undercarriage, 2. the thread matches, and 3. your undercarriage is shadowed anyway. I did mine by machine, but you could absolutely do it by hand. I'd recommend doing a reverse "pick stitch," so most of the thread is on the outside.
(Also, the comment you made about "reverse assless chaps" did make me laugh, but it also isn't the worst idea. I have a pair of very old, very mended jeans where I put a second layer of fabric under the wear zone, and it's still unnoticeable for the 3 reasons above.)
If you search "diy ripstop" on my blog, or scroll back a ways through "cj sews," you should find some more info on this! Happy making!
"Don't just throw ripped jeans away, you can repair them using these 10 cute Visible Mending techniques!!" unfortunately my friend the first point of failure for every single pair of jeans i have owned in my life has been the Crotch and Ass. Knees: fine, cuffs: fine; but 3 years in, and all that stands between the world and my astronaut-patterned taint is 0.5µm of denim worn so thin that every squat threatens to tear it to shreds like wet toilet paper. If the Tiktok craft community could figure out a way to resurrect jeans afflicted in such a way that doesn't involve adding a whole ass buttpatch like some sort of inverse assless chaps situation then that'd be great

Figured I'd try the sewing side of Tumblr to ask about ripstop nylon fabric to make a smaller puffalump with. Normally this is something I'd ask my Mom as she sews too, but this is a material that neither of us had used before. Is there anything I need to use on it before sewing like fray check the edges or is it fine as is? Does it take to fiber dyes well or should I stick to embroidery for any markings?
