“In Fair Verona, Where We Lay Our Scene” – In the wake of Romeo and Juliet’s tragic deaths, the Montague and Capulet rivalry escalates. A new royal takes the throne in Verona and struggles to determine what is best for his city, which is at the epicenter of mayhem. The series premiere of “Still Star-Crossed” is MONDAY, MAY 29 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. Following the death of her cousin Juliet, Rosaline Capulet (Lashana Lynch) finds herself in the middle of a political play to try and save Verona. She will prove she’s a force to be reckoned with, especially when it comes to her destiny, and must make tough decisions regarding her loyalty to the Capulet name. Rosaline’s sister, Livia Capulet (Ebonee Noel), is a hopeless romantic who dreams of a marriage to provide her with a life she’s always wanted, but her yearning for love makes her an easy target, and she gets drawn into a sordid secret unbeknownst to her. Romeo’s death thrusts his cousin Benvolio Montague (Wade Briggs) into a position of responsibility, as he becomes the sole heir to the Montague name and must abide by a sinister plan to solidify his family’s prominence. A newly crowned Prince Escalus (Sterling Sulieman) is determined to end the bloodshed between the Montagues and Capulets, but his only solution forces him to decide between following his heart and protecting his kingdom. I know it happened a long time ago but you probably remember us being fairly enthusiastic about the X-Wing comics. If you don’t, you can just go back and take a listen -- or you can just trust me. We thought they were “actually pretty good.” So it comes as some surprise that we’re not quite as enthusiastic about Michael A. Stackpole’s first “Rogue Squadron” novel. It’s a meandering, plotless, conflict-less journey that starts nowhere and ends...well it just kind of ends. I guess that means it ends nowhere. Whatever.

I was never terribly into these books as a kid, but I knew people that were. That’s best how I remember them: other nerdy friends reading them. These books present, much like the comics, a more down-to-earth vision of the Star Wars universe. We don’t have lightsaber battles or magic or world-destrying super weapons. It’s just a bunch of people trying to secure the viability of their political revolution. 

Maybe in future installments this will prove to be an interesting conceptual hook, but for right now it’s just a meandering, pointless mess. If we’re correct in assuming that the comics were written after (even though they’re set chronologically BEFORE the books) it would make sense that they’re a little better than the novels. By the time he’d finished with the books, Stackpole would have been able to sharpen his vision of Rogue Squadron: he would have developed the patios, the pathos, the inter-team dynamics that would allow him to write stories that were compelling and interesting and hung together. Or maybe -- to be uncharitable -- it’s just that comics lend themselves well to Stackpole’s staccato writing style. Who knows, really. We’re hoping things pick up but maybe not too much. This podcast doesn’t really work unless we have something to make fun of. 

Next week: A solos on our favorite Star Wars memory. It gets nostalgic.
