Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan (25 December 1957 – 30 November 2023)
Shane was a British-born Irish singer-songwriter and musician best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of Celtic punk band the Pogues.
He also produced solo material and collaborated with artists including Joe Strummer, Nick Cave, Steve Earle, Sinéad O'Connor, Ronnie Drew, and Cruachan.
Frequently noted for his exceptional songwriting ability as well as his heavy alcohol and drug use, MacGowan was described by The New York Times as "a titanically destructive personality and a master songsmith whose lyrics painted vivid portraits of the underbelly of Irish immigrant life.”
Rest in Power.
The band and Shane’s widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, back campaign to finally try and get The Pogues Christmas classic ‘Fairytale of New York’ to number one.
The 7” single is available to pre-order now and All profits from vinyl sales to benefit Dublin Simon Community - a charity loved and supported by Shane and Victoria.

RIP Shane McGowan. You are missed.
Fairytale of New York was without a doubt the most memorable and heartfelt Christmas song ever made. As someone who spent more than 30 Christmases working in the ER, when I heard this song for the first time I thought “these are my people.”
Thanks for all the music.

12/28/23.
I actually learned about The Sleeveens (Nashville, Tennessee) from a Marty Winch/Green Noise Records email. They have a new LP out on Dirtnap Records (original releasers of The Exploding Hearts) but nothing is up for preview. So here is this excellent 7" on Sweet Time Records (Nashville, Tennessee).
Stefan Murphy sounds like he could be in a Dublin pub (RIP Shane McGowan). But the music also sounds like Ramones-era punk. And in some ways this recalls the early punk of Jonathan Richman/The Modern Lovers.
By the way, Sleeveen is an Irish term for trickster.

The Pogues - In Session - 1984 - Past Daily Morning Soundbooth - Tribute Edition (RIP: Shane McGowan - 1957- 2023)
https://pastdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/The-Pogues-April-10-1984-Peel.mp3 Ending the week on a high-voltage note, but also as tribute to Shane McGowan who was lead vocalist and writer for The Pogues in their first session for John Peel on April 10, 1984. McGowan left us, sadly but not unexpectedly, yesterday at age 65. He had been in ill health for some time. A family statement said he…
