So when he kicked her to the floor, her reflexes kicked in immediately and she grabbed at her lightsaber, leveling it in her hand and extending each blade sideways as she growled at the man. 

“I don’t know who the kriff you think you are...” Rey said, standing herself up slowly. She wasn’t about to be intimidated by an old man with a blaster on his hip. With the saber carefully held, she closed the space between them and brought her head closer to his.

“But you back down, right away, and you go running to wherever you came from. You are nothing against a Knight.”

Rogue One (liveblog & notes)

I had to rewind various parts of the intro several times. Too many names, locations and plot points.

CGI Peter Cushing is the definition of uncanny valley. I can’t tell what looks wrong, but something does. He just doesn’t look real next to a normal actor. How was this done anyway?

I have to say the flashbacks are done in a very paint-by-the-numbers way.

I am afraid to picture the public’s reaction to that tentacle scene. Are the filmmakers sure it was a wise decision lmao

“The Guardians of the Whills”? I saw that name in one of the script drafts for ANH. Do they have a presence in the lore?

Damn, I expected there to be some last-second malfunction. Is Jyn force sensitive, judging by her reaction? That would make sense with some of the previous scenes. It’s strange that Chirrut is not reacting. Why exactly does Saw stay behind to die? There’s no in-universe reason, only “we have to kill off this character”. I thought they’d get the other rebels... RIP I guess. :/ That’s a big-ass explosion. Shouldn’t the Death Star itself get out of the way?

“They forgot to grab the message chip that was the objective of the mission” is such a contrived plot point. Oh is the plot going to be based on that miscommunication from now on Please don’t tell me Jyn is going to arrive right after Cassian kills her dad... Oh she’s climbing to where the father is. I guess she’s going to hold him as he dies... Just shoot Krennic, you idiot... Come the fuck on, you literally have the evil general in your sights! Aaand the shooting conveniently stopped to set the stage for the scene I predicted two lines above.

“You’re not the only one who lost everything.” Yeah but you’re the one directly responsible for her latest loss, dude. She’s right, “I was just following orders” is an absurd excuse, especially for executing someone for being a collaborator and pretending to just follow orders. Nice parallel: “I’ve never had the luxury of political opinions” + “We don't all have the luxury of deciding when and where we want to care about something" — they're both grown cynical in the same way.

Hell yeah, Mustafar! For a second I was surprised to see lava, then I saw Vader’s fortress <3 Wow, who is this rando and why does Vader allow him to see him in the tank? Does Vader have an apprentice? He looks freshly boiled... Vader, you dramatic bitch, you built this room specifically so that your enormous shadow would fall on your visitor? Respect. His stride is so different from Christensen’s, it's distracting. “Its power to create problems has certainly been confirmed.” I am sending kisses to the screen right now. Huh, there's something weird about the suit. Is it the overly plastic texture? Is it a costume or full CGI? Its unnatural look kind of reminds me of Tarkin. The helmet’s eyes are also more noticeably red than usual. I love the room and the view out of the window. Prettier than the granite throne room. Well, that shut him up! :D Obviously I’ve seen this scene in gifs, but I expected it to come at the end of the movie. Satisfying nonetheless. I bet it got cheers and applause from the audience! Also that was a fun sound effect.

I bet during all this internally Jyn is like “Why the fuck am I the one to step up and be the hero” Jyn is also the only one aware of the name of the movie that will be set right after this one.

“He served me well during the Clone Wars...” Oh did he? Did TCW plug that plothole?

Let me guess, the project name will be “Stardust”? Bingo.

Oh, so Krennic will die looking at his creations charge its beam at him? Okay, I cried at the image of Jyn and Cassian on the beach staring at their approaching death.

Oh, so Vader personally fucked up the retrieval of the plans? Is that why he was demoted in ANH? Unfortunately I’ve seen too much of the hallway massacre to be properly impressed by it now, but the fact that the whole incident is actually Vader’s failure doesn’t help. Also I was internally screaming the whole time for the guy with the info chip to just pass it through the door and of course he only did it at the last possible moment.

It’s very hard to evaluate this movie because it's so unlike the main trilogies. Without the overarching spiritual journey, Star Wars is just... a war movie? With long shootouts both in space and on the ground that are pretty boring to watch? As you can see from the liveblog, I found many of the plot developments pretty cliche. Diversity win: this movie stars a woman and several men of color but their characters are paper thin and they all die by the end! At least Jyn and Cassian got character arcs. I expected more from Chirrut and Baze, some lore perhaps, but they were little more than the typical “two guys who are really close and whom the fandom inevitably headcanons to be husbands, but no homo in canon”. Also, unfortunately, I found the prayers more grating than moving. Oh, and are Jyn and Cassian a canonical romance or not? I’m not feeling it.

I don’t want to be too negative. Overall I thought it was a good movie. The cinematography is beautiful, the visual and plot continuity are remarkable, it makes the world feel wider and more lived in, and what’s most impressive to me, it manages to avoid the internal inconsistency of ideology and morals that plagues all of Star Wars. This maturity certainly deserves praise.

But that brings me to my original point: this movie is just not... particularly enjoyable to watch. Maybe it's just me and my sensitivity, but I prefer not to think about the Death Star too hard. The destruction of Alderaan upsets me greatly on a Watsonian level, and its casual treatment as a plot point — on the Doylist. This movie reverses the latter problem by doubling down on the former. The effects of the Death Star are taken seriously... but dammit, I just don't want to watch that!
