RIP David L. Lander 1947-2020

Actor David L. Lander has died at age 73 from MS. In addition to acting, comedy, and voiceover, he was also a baseball scout, a published author and a musician.

His greatest role was as Andrew 'Squiggy' Squiggman on the 1976-83 TV sitcom Laverne & Shirley. Lander went to college with and was part of a comedy group with actor Michael McKean and the two were hired to be writers on L&S, but the producers realized that the two of them as Lenny and Squiggy were great as the neighbors and co-workers of Laverne and Shirley, so they became castmembers. Squiggy also showed up on Happy Days, which L&S was spun off from. L&S is one of the great TV shows of all-time. My sister and I used to watch re-runs quite a bit growing up, even if a lot of the humor went over my head.

In 1979, Casablanca Records released a rock album from Lenny & Squiggy Present Lenny and the Squigtones. The band featured Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) on guitar pre-Spinal Tap, which featured Derek St. Hubbins (played by Michael McKean).

Lander frequently popped up in a lot of show movies and TV shows including Steve Spielberg’s 1941, Robert Zemeckis’ Used Cars, as Tim Pinkle on David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, Lynch’s short-lived On the Air, The Weird Al Show, and he played Principal Squiggy in the Wayans’ Scary Movie.

He was also a popular voiceover in animated work including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, A Bug's Life, and more. Lander brought the Squiggy character as a guest on SNL twice, including the 1994 Quentin Tarantino’s Welcome Back Kotter sketch, where Lenny (McKean was a cast member that season) and Squiggy show up.

//I was saddened to hear the news that David Lander had passed away. Most knew him as Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley but I knew him as Smartass from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Lander brought such life and character to him. I love this delightfully Cagney-esque weasel with all my heart even though he's a villainous henchman. If creating Kitty has taught me anything it's that misunderstood henchman need love too. RIP David Lander.

More and more of my childhood is gone every day!

David and Michael were just so perfect in the roles of Lenny and Squiggly, just soooo funny!

RIP David Lander and may your memory be a blessing forever!

Sad to hear of the passing of David Lander. Aka Sqiggy from Laverne and Shirley. . In 1979 he and Michael McKean (Lenny) released this album for Lenny and the Sqigtones based on a band the characters formed on the show. This must have been the impetus for Spinal Tap as you can see Christopher Guest as Nigel on guitar in pic 3. . RIP David.
