Logo Design for Visual Communication
Design Process:
After watching "The Art Of Design | Paula Scher : Graphic Design" I designed a logo inspired by the aesthetics of the 80s. The big and bold colors are what made up the 80s and for my design I imagined a beauty and fashion company entitled "PUFF" that reported on the latest fashion and beauty trends from the past that were returning today. The logo is also inspired by the iconic Rubiks cube that broke our in the 80s and used this in creating the letters for the name of the company.

Ridiculously Chic Maria Go 'Round! A Swinging Sixties Shift Dress Design
Hi, this is Deya!
A first year student of RepubLikha from Bachelor of Design of Miriam College. Glad to see you here again for my second design!
The second requirement in Design History (AAV-104) class under Mr. Rino Datuin is to choose an era and type of fashion design and create our own.
Tumblr media
We, the RepubLikha, chose the Swinging Sixties and I went for the casual wear design.
Explore the Chic but Ridiculous Fashion of the Swinging Sixties and how my design came to life!
Swinging Sixties, Oh How it Came to Be
The swinging culture was like an explosion of all the repressed feelings that English society had been keeping down, and London was its epicenter. Of all the channels they can use, fashion was their pick to reflect and correlate the social movements that happened during the time.
Liberated fashion started to grow during the Swinging Sixties especially on women to show the women empowerment movement. Conservative fashion slowly transitioned to mini skirts and dresses where they gained more control on what they want to wear.
All About Mini Skirts & Ridiculously Fun Fashion
There are a lot of designers during the fashion revolution in the 1960s and Mary Foale and Sally Tuffin are one of them. They are known for their lively, graphic and very wearable clothes for women. They created a range of informal dresses, skirts and tops, which they sold through department stores and their own shop just off London’s Carnaby Street. They would go on to design the first trouser suits that embraced the female form in the mid-sixties.
Another designer was Mary Quant, she pioneered modern fast fashion by offering short runs of cheap, trendy clothing designed with a younger target market in mind. Her most successful designs were her mini skirts and shift dresses, which almost always featured bright colors or graphic prints inspired by 60s pop art.
One of her notable pieces is the pink A-line dress from 1966 which Twiggy wore as you can see on our moodboard.
Ms. Twiggy and Her Fashion
One of the notable fashion icons from the era was Dame Lesley Lawson, most commonly known as Twiggy because of her twig-like frame.
Twiggy was a supermodel and she was one of the many who joined a movement that celebrated a more liberated fashion sense. She showcased the “mod aesthetic”, androgynous hair and bold make up.
The Design & The Process
Tumblr media
The first image that you can see is the initial design I presented in class together with my team. It is a Cozy Cardigan Set which was inspired by the Cozy 60s Fashion. The idea behind this is how anyone can wear a cardigan, so I thought of making a casual wear which everyone can wear. The sleeveless top idea was made because of how liberated fashion is starting during the era. It’s a mix of being conservative and being open in different ways using fashion.
After the presentation and consultation with Mr. Rino Datuin, our professor, my design went to a cozy cardigan set to a fun shift dress!
Tumblr media
The transition from a cardigan set to a shift dress was made with the help of the suggestion of our professor on how instead of recreating certain pieces, why not follow Foale and Tuffin's words of making a ridiculous and fun fashion pieces and putting our own personality on our designs.
That is how the Maria Go 'Round Shift Dress came to be. The name of the design was from the Merry-Go-Round amusement ride name and how it goes round every time. With this shift dress, it has circle elements and how a dress in general makes you want to go around and twirl out of fun.
It is paired with a gogo boots as it was a notable piece during 1969. The design on it is a sampaguita, a Philippine nation flower, to add a Filipino element on the shift dress design.
If you think that is it for my design process, you're wrong~ You are in for a long ride but I hope you will still stay with me!
Another consultation and presentation was made and after 2 more revisions, I present to you the final design of the Maria Go 'Round Shift Dress!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final take on this casual wear was changed with a more bright and crazy twist on the dress. It is for anyone who wants to explore ridiculously fun fashion that also showcase the beauty of what Philippines has to offer.
Every detail on the dress is my take on the ridiculously fun fashion. It is simple but witty in a way. With this piece, I came to realize that the Swinging Sixties was a youth movement. It was a period of optimism and hedonism, and a cultural revolution.
The use of bright colors and more liberated fashion was a way for the youth to show that it is a new chapter and fresh start not just for fashion but also an era for the new and modern.

Concept/Era: Real Fresh 90s
I made this logo in design history class with my professor Mr. Rino Datuin. If we take a look at it, the 1990s seem like a great era. The Game Boy! The Spice Girls! The Parent Trap! They are the last generation without cellphones particularly when it comes to 90s fashion. The logo that I've made is a clothing brand for children's clothing (particularly for young girls). Fashion styles include babydoll dresses, t-shirts, overalls, etc.

welcome to my first post where you get to know what you're about to dive into!
I'm Ella Robes, a Bachelor of Design student from Miriam College 🎨
I'm also 1/4 of Kisetsu, a team (the best!) formed through our Design History class with our professor Rino Datuin. Kisetsu means "season" in Japanese and each of us in the group settled on a season; I picked Autumn 🍂 Meet more of Kisetsu here!
As a team, we chose the Victorian Era out of the same interest in how COOL it was, well, the aesthetic, not how bad it was to live during that time 💀 Moving on, our time period became the basis and inspiration of the works you're about to see later!

Design History + My Team
My reflection about this class and this wonderful team I am in
Tumblr media
Design history was such a nice learning experience for me.
We get to do our tasks first-hand, and through our homeworks, team work, and constructive criticism from our professor Mr. Rino Datuin, I personally feel like I was able to learn a lot and greatly improve my approach to design, and also in working in teams.
Personally, I don't really enjoy working in groups. From my former experience, groups just don't really work out for me. I felt like I was way better off alone. However, and I am being 100% honest, I would enjoy working with this team again. They are genuinely the nicest set of people I've worked with. Not only that, they are all skilled and really good at doing their responsibilities. Being with them, I've really improved as well, and learned to be unafraid of going above and beyond for results that are born from extensive research and openness to constructive criticism. With them, I learned discipline in my studies.
In this class, I learned how important it is to have good research and a really good knowledge on what we are going to do. I learned that our first attempts aren't always going to be great, and that it is important to hear from outside perspectives in regards to our designs.
I am very grateful to have this class, and also to have such a delightful team to work with. Everything that I've learned here will be applied in my days moving forward.

Airship or Flying Dolphin?
Based on our group's concept, Steampunk, I made a motion graphic depicting an airship 'sailing' through the air. When using Instagram to post a story or Canva to make a presentation, there’s a common factor: GIFs or Graphics Interchange Format. This is one of the things we use to decorate our digital canvas. I kept this thought in mind when making my output.
I took inspiration from the Disney movie, 'Treasure Planet'. The overall aesthetic they had was what interested me the most. I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of the vintage fashion (influenced by the Victorian Era) combined with the futuristic machinery.
With various elements I found in the Canva app, I put together shapes and images to make my design. I made the color palette shades of brown with a tint of gold to fit the Steampunk theme. There are six frames in total, which I downloaded into a GIF.
However, after I was told by Mr. Rino Datuin in our group consultation that my airship looked like a dolphin from afar, I thought of what Paula Scher said in the Netflix series, 'Abstract', "Design needs to take human behavior into account." Because the shape of the airship looked similarly to a dolphin, most people would think it is one despite its color scheme. And again, I’m back to square one.

Bloom’s Evening Gown Fashion Design | Swinging Sixties Theme
Tumblr media
A formal wear for a Filipino Celebrity attending the MET Gala. I infused 60s elements such as mod fashion (short skirts, tights and geometric shapes) and took inspiration from Filipino icons and designers. The dress is an envisioned modernized Filipiniana. Ridiculous and bright yet easy to wear because it is a terno. The wrap is a makeshift panuelo but it also gives the impression of butterfly puffed sleeves. The motif of the gown is the Philippines’ national flower, Sampaguita.
Our second plate submission tackled on Fashion Design. Professor Rino Datuin instructed the block to stick with same era as the previous Visual Communication plate. Thankfully, the timeline we chose had a distinct style and world-renown designers, even considered pioneers, like Mary Quant.
In the 1960s, London was the center of Fashion and they called the era Swinging Sixties. Their fashion is characterized by bright color and a-line hemlines as seen in the moodboard (img.1).
Tumblr media
Img.1 RepubLIKHA: 1960s Sustainable Wear Moodboard
I chose to do formal wear and nothing much went on with my initial designs (img.2). I made 2 designs for the sake of variation but regardless they are bland. Undoubtedly, it is evident that I was confused how to do this.
Tumblr media
Img.2 - Orchid’s Evening Gown Initial Design
Our member, Deya, was the presenter for our concept presentation. She begun with the line from Foalle and Tuffin  “we don’t want to be chic, we just want to be ridiculous” which changed direction of our designs after.
Design Process
To explain my initial design, it is an evening gown meant for any occasion. Made from satin, layered with floral lace as accent. The design on the right is an envisioned modernized Filipiniana. I added a boxy jacket made from satin and lace as terno for the a-line skirt.
According to research, while 1960s fashion became progressively casual and there were trends for womenswear - formalwear, however, still emulated the 1950s with the tea length dresses and elegance so I did the same.
On the right corner of the initial design image are my professor’s comments that I noted down. He said to the team that our designs were a little conservative and we could be more ridiculous! He also mentioned that we should not merely be replicating or making designs for the era rather giving new takes.
Tumblr media
Img.3 - Formal Gown 2nd Revision
This is my second design (img.3). I like to think it’s ridiculous but it feels casual to me. It made me question what’s even is considered ‘formal’.
For this concept, I used nearly all the colors of the moodboard’s palette. I made the skirt shorter and balloon shaped as my professor suggested. The Filipino elements in this is the single butterfly puffed sleeve and the sampaguita embroidery on the satin top and colorful lace skirt. I wanted to go all out floral that is why the colored lace layered on top of the skirt are petal shaped, even the collar are petal shaped fabrics. I chose sampaguita because it is the Philippines’ national flower.
I was not able to attend the 2nd consultation with my professor so instead I watched the recording and I tried applying his feedback on my team members’ outputs to mine. I also asked feedback from my team as well.
Tumblr media
img.4 - Evening Gown Final Design
For my final design, I changed the gown’s style or shape of the skirt yet again. It is a-line but still above the knee because miniskirts, shift dresses that don’t have defined waists were the trend of the 1960s. Mary Quant was the designer that popularized the high-hemlines and contributed, if not, defined the fashion of Swinging Sixties.
If there are fashion designers then there are fashion models as well. To complete the mod fashion, I referred to Twiggy’s wears. I paired the dress with ridiculous tights with circle prints and cuts, and mary jane heels.
For the Filipino elements, I looked into Drag Race because if there is anyone who knew what it meant to express themselves it would be Drag Queens! They are highly creative people and it is evident in the outfits they designed and created themselves.
Paolo Ballesteros was the host for Philippine Drag Race and for the announcement of being the TV show’s chosen host he wore this gown (img.5) with Manila landmarks designed by Job Dacon. I thought this was what my professor meant when he told the team to add Filipino motifs or icons.
Tumblr media
Img.5 - Paolo Ballesteros Gown (2022)
I established in my 2nd revision that sampaguita was my main motif so without hesitation, I used the Hasmin Sampaguita Rice print and replaced the idea of using embroidered Sampaguita on the satin top.
The scarf wrap is a makeshift panuelo and made puffed to replicate the butterfly sleeves of a Filipiana. This is inspired from Ditta Sandico’s brand. She is a Filipino designer that collaborated with indigenous weavers and created the fabric Banaca, made from banana and abaca.

Fashion Design for Sustainable Wear
Design Process:
In creating this fashion piece, I imagined an event where in the dresscode would be 80s throwback. I created an outfit that would be worn by the staff of the event, maintaining that sophisticated and professional look while still being on theme of the 80s. Inspired by the bold colors of the 80s, I combined it with the iconic dramatic shoulder pads, chunky belts, rara skits, and neon tights of that decade.

EXERCISES IN DIGITAL DRAFTING EVERYONE!!! Life’s always easier when it’s digital. And even though that is true, that doesn’t mean that transitioning to digital makes it even perfect. Good grief, I had to make my own ruler in google slides since it’s not showing the actual measurements (I recently learned from my classmate that there’s a thing called format options in Google Slides wherein it helps you input the actual measurement you want and even show the measurement of a figure). As easy as they are, there are some areas that are quite tedious to do such as making the Isometric model of a kennel. But either way, this is a good starter for digital drafting and it actually helps as well as references for artists like me. What’s even awesome is that I don’t need to buy anything and such. You gotta make the most with what you have if you want to save money you know :”>

Homage to Luz: This project for the Materials Improvisation course provided the opportunity to the student-artist Rino Datuin to take to another level his previous explorations on the art of Arturo Luz, one of the Philippines’ national artist for visual arts. Inspired by Luz’s Black and White series (primarily the one displayed at the CCP Main Lobby), Datuin has already done earlier studies in digital art that play around black geometric forms in linear formation over white background. He was even able to create a whole set of typography based on Luz’s art. It is at this juncture that he decided to produce his own composition by setting out the names of his own family using the fonts he made. After deciding on his desired balance of the letter-forms and extended symbolisms (purple circle for his wife Lisa, and the green half-chevron for his son Jax), Datuin flipped the whole set and mirrored it, which he claims made his art more difficult to decipher, thus adding a sense of mystery and puzzlement to the viewer. This initial work which he calls “Homage to Luz” is the jump-off point of his new creation for this course, which made use of discarded carton boxes given for carrying groceries bought during this pandemic and the empty box of his son’s laptop. Datuin transformed his digital art into cut-out forms using the laptop box as medium, and created a background that makes use of the material from the other carton box with its top layer stripped away to show the corrugated paper texture. The result was a raw post-apocalyptic version of the art of Luz that still has the modernist tones that come from the dynamic diagonal lines and positive-negative circular forms of the letter-shapes. Despite the echoes from Luz’s art, Datuin’s piece is a very personal expression of his regard for his family which is a reflection of his Filipino values that is essential during times of crises.
