TV Presenter Dan Walker Cheats Death in Horrific Bike Crash - Find Out How His Helmet Saved His Life.

BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker has credited his cycling helmet with saving his life after he was involved in a collision with a car. The incident occurred in Sheffield on Sunday morning, when Walker was cycling with former Olympic champion Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. In a post on social media, Walker said he had been left “bruised and battered” but otherwise okay after the incident, which saw him knocked off his bike. He added that he was “grateful to be alive” and urged other cyclists to wear helmets. South Yorkshire Police confirmed that they had attended the incident, which took place on Ringinglow Road in Sheffield. Walker, who is an avid cyclist and regularly advocates for cycling safety, has previously spoken about the importance of wearing helmets. In 2018, he revealed that he had been knocked unconscious in a cycling accident and said that his helmet had “undoubtedly” saved his life. The presenter has also called for better infrastructure for cyclists on UK roads, including dedicated cycle lanes and lower speed limits. Walker’s colleagues on BBC Breakfast offered their support following the incident. [Last of the Sheffield Quartet:   a prestigious commission in 1922 from Frederick Horner, a local art dealer, to paint four large views in oils of Sheffield: 

Sheffield from Mayfields; Sheffield from Wincobank Wood; Sheffield from the Park; Sheffield from Crookes. 

This quartet of paintings forms a significant part of the collection of Stanley Royle's work in Museums Sheffield. In 2005 one of this group, Sheffield from Wincobank Wood was included in the Tate Britain exhibition 'A Picture of Britain']

[ imacleoduk note: I have a personal interest in this - I used to visit this viewpoint often on my bike as a boy - on the Fulwood Road from Ringinglow - and, of all the Stanley Royle Quartet, it remains much the same today as then. As a teenager, when I first acquired a car, we would go up at night to see the city lights in the distance. By sheer coincidence I happen to own a 1924 lithograph print of this same picture]

Still Awaiting Thor - Day 3

I awoke in the morning, no patter of rain, no rumble of thunder had graced the night. Next time i need to shout a hail to Thor - I mean what was I thinking yesterday by whispering, yes *whispering* to the GOD OF THUNDER - he ain’t no fairy.

 First destination was the hill fort Castle Naze. It wasn’t very exciting as hill forts can go. Not helped by the barbed wire fence surrounding it with only one stile.

 I drove on to Crowden and at Torside reservoir I spotted the humans known as twitchers with their big telephoto lenses and telescopes looking skyward. I looked up but couldn’t see anything obvious.

 After a quick google I discover that there is a female bearded vulture in the area. With nearly a 3m wing span, the Peaks haven’t seen anything like it in over 70 years!

 I headed up to the WT reserve Brockholes Wood. I discovered a loan twitcher and got chatting to him. He had an image of the vulture on his camera but it was little more than a dot. At least I can say I’ve been in the presence of a bird ‘lifer’.

 After a stroll through the small and Bracken heavy wood I got back in Daenerys and headed for Derwent water stopping at snakes wood on the way.

 There’s a lovely river with stone towers. I built another one and washed my hair.

 Sadly this wood, whilst nice had an awful lot of litter in it. At one water course, scummy foam sat there making pretty patterns.

 I then headed to Derwent water but it was very busy so I decided it wasn’t for me and left to attempt Bamford South stone circle. The day was so hot, I just didn’t fancy traipsing across the open, shelterless heat-festooned moorland to find it and opted instead to go on a quest for Robin Hoods cave at Stannage Edge. 

Upon arriving there I discovered several Edale mountain rescue vehicles there and they were setting off with a stretcher towards the rocks.

 These rocks are clearly very popular with rock climbers and there were several parties of them on the face. Clearly someone had had an incident.

 I clambered around the Rocks at the bottom and then made my way up a small pass to the top and then walked back along them.

I then headed for the Redmires reservoirs and Wyming Brook WT reserve. What a beauty this one is. There’s something magical about it and it reminded me of Alderley Edge. The names of the hills and features in this sea are really evocative with names like Ringinglow, Rivelin, Rising Clough and Foulstone Moor.

 I decided to go on a several mile walk around the reserve which is mixed woodland with gangly Rowan trees and rushing waters set on the side of a hill leading down to the Rivelin reservoirs.

 I find two most excellent signs - this first should be mass produced and stuck everywhere. It’s always gives me a little glow when someone hails me. It’s part of why Ireland is so very lovely- the pretty much always all wave at or acknowledge you. 

 The second one, found attached to a memorial bench, is beautifully simple.
