started rewatching demons (2014) again and my thoughts keep on coming back to that paper i read about how the people (mainly verkhovensky, kirillov, and shatov) around stavrogin are very... fond of — for the lack of a better word — putting words in his mouth when he himself doesn't necessarily believe or espouse those ideas that they spew out

something funny i noticed about them

(ramble below)

its fun how they're both so different yet so similar, their personalities are nothing alike but the way they process things, their decisions and reactions are nearly identical, both went through a "roleplaying" phase in their youth, adopting the roles those around them wanted them to play

miku has never been mean or evil, but people, the circumstances, forced him to adopt a role he was never made for playing, same case with rin, she was forced to turn into this flawless being who makes no mistakes and is always kind to everyone

in the end, both took the decision to play along to protect themselves, to fit in just like anybody else, to have a role, a set position, something stable to hold onto, but it wounded them deeply, and it takes them a long time to heal and learn to be themselves again

“stop checking your phone,” rin’s voice cuts sharply through the murky sea of idle thoughts simmering in your head, and you let out a defeated puff of air before placing it face down on the coffee table. 

letting your eyes slide back to the television screen, you make a feeble attempt at figuring out what’s going on in the movie that’s playing—though it’s been on nearly an hour now, and you can’t even remember what it’s called. 

suddenly, your phone vibrates, and you jump, reaching out to grab it. rin makes an annoyed sound, pushing it just out of your reach with his foot. 

“rin!” you huff, leaning further off of the couch to grab it. 

your fingers just barely graze the tip of it before your entire body is swiftly pulled backward, and you land halfway in rin’s lap. 

the phone vibrates again, the noise clanging loudly against the table’s surface. 

rin’s arms slip around your middle before you can even try to move this time, holding you firmly in place.

(and your heart fumbles for several reasons.)

“what if it’s—” you protest weakly.

“he cheated on you twice.” rin’s breath is hot against the shell of your ear.

“but what if he—”

“ignore him,” rin murmurs, his nose brushing against your hair as he turns his face into the side of your head. “please.”

you shiver.

(he has every right, considering how you showed up sobbing on his doorstep last night.)

(—and given the way he told you not to give his brother the time of day in the first place.)

it’s confusing—this hot, dizzy swell of emotion fluttering in your chest. this urge to sink further into your best friend’s touch, to look him in the eyes and tell him to make you ignore sae.

(you wonder if he would.)

(you wonder what he’d do.)

i've been thinking about how the 2014 adaptation managed to humanize stavrogin even just a little (for me, at least) by letting him have a butterfly hobby. i feel like that's what made the experience of reading the book so bleak to me, because there was nothing for me to "hold onto" in a way that would make me feel like he's (hypothetically) an actual person. i tend to do this a lot when i read, because it helps me understand why certain characters do what they do in a story. but for nikolai, there was just nothing. i felt that sense of emptiness, albeit on a lesser degree.

anyway. back to the butterflies. it was certainly A Choice, and a good one, dare i say! the symbolism of transformation in relation to nikolai just fits perfectly with his character. recently i started connecting it to ethel cain's "sun bleached flies" — the flies that get stuck and fly into a window pane over and over until they die without knowing freedom are so reminiscent of the butterflies that nikolai had in his study. they're all pinned down and frozen behind glass; the ones in the bell jar, too, are unable of escape despite the enclosure granting them a full view of the outside world. but they remain stuck.

nikolai was like that, somehow. he had the whole world in front of him to experience, but he had no way of escaping the hell that he had plunged himself into, and so eventually, he succumbs to the lukewarm air of his bell jar. his life ended without him ever truly leaving that self-made limbo.
