Thank you for the ask! I had fun doing these. (Also I'm glad you're enjoying the fic! I am sitting in my authorial hobbit hole with a big smile on my face.)

Aventurine

Clarifications (yellow boxes):

I don't see as many bad Aventurine takes as I do for Ratio, but I do think his rough edges often get watered down in a way that either justifies or ignores his canonical flaws. So "they got done dirty by fans" and "wow! they are a horrible person" both get soft nods because I think his character deserves to be both sympathetic and kind of an ass sometimes. (The other issue I see is people acting like he's vulnerable and helpless, which is just. fundamentally not true? He's not as secure in himself as he pretends to be, but he is a ruthlessly competent strategist, and he knows how to read people and give them what they want to see. He's a member of the Ten Stonehearts for a reason.)

"If they were real I would be afraid of them" alright let me explain. The 2.1 story did a masterful job of humanizing Aventurine, but his first impressions in 2.0 were fine-tuned to be unnerving, and it was really effective for me as a player. For a while I couldn't articulate why it made me uncomfortable, but @starcurtain did a great analysis on female influence in Aventurine's life, which touched on how his early interactions with the Trailblazer are designed to be intimidating and off-putting in a way that channels the sort of masculine dominance Aventurine has historically experienced at the hands of other men. Suffice to say: if it served his plans for me to be afraid of him, he knows how to do it, and it would work.

Also I forgot to mark "why do they look like that" on the bingo but I do think Hoyo should have given him more melanin considering how deeply Romani-coded his culture is. Everything else about his design slaps though.

Ratio

Clarifications:

"Wasted potential" is subjective because I've loved every moment we've gotten of Ratio onscreen, but damn do I want the game to delve deeper into his backstory and his dynamics with other characters (I'm still sad that so far Aventurine is the only character that has a voice line about him).

"Deeper than they seem" and "not as deep as they seem" exist in a paradoxical state for me because I do think some folks stop at the surface reading of "arrogant asshole" when he's got way more going on in his character stories and his actions in canon... but I also think some people err on the side of taking him too seriously, in a way that likewise takes something away from his character. Like, this is the guy who plays chess with himself and trash-talks from both sides of the table like a goddamn cartoon character. He owns at least one rubber duck and takes a bath with it every day. He likes all of Aventurine's social media posts and replies "Heh." to anything he finds vaguely amusing. This is not a serious man.

"Why do they look like that" okay I need to clarify that this is not a criticism. I love Ratio's design. The neoclassical vibes are impeccable. But it's also extra in a way that I feel morally obligated to call out, considering how much he rags on Aventurine for dressing like a peacock. Sir, you walk around in robes and sandals with an alabaster bust on your head; you have no room to talk about subtle fashion choices.

Ruan Mei

Clarifications:

Ruan Mei gets both "they are so cool looking" and "why do they look like that" because I love the theory behind her design (the DNA elements, the embroidery and floral imagery, the qipao paired with the pearl necklace) but she also has the unfortunate distinction of being a female character in a Hoyoverse game, so the more unique details fall prey to the homogenizing force of the male gaze.

Another case of "they got done dirty by fans" and "wow! they are a terrible person" existing in tandem, but in Ruan Mei's case I think some people reduce her down to her worst qualities without acknowledging the more complex aspects of her character. Her unchecked pursuit of knowledge leads to her doing Objectively Bad Things, but I don't think it's a fair (or particularly interesting) reading to portray her as heartless.

I thought about marking "wasted potential" because imo 1.6 wasn't nearly enough to delve into Everything Going on with This Woman, but it seems like they're setting up something for a future patch, so I'm content to wait and see what the writers have planned. I'm really excited to find out what she's doing with those leviathan fossils and Tingyun's wrecked ship.

Unlike the previous question, this one elicits a much more somber, closed off reaction. Rick's face darkens and he glances away, a mixture of sorrow and guilt curling his features in a scowl. All his body language screams how he does not want to answer the query, in any fashion.

He could refuse. He could tell the sender to shove his fucking question where the sun doesn't shine and then to choke on it. However, that would leave lingering doubts and false hopes, would it? And he has learnt the hard way how those could be even more destructive than a hard, painful truth.

He and Clarissa...Chance now...have a complicated history. They have gone through a lot together, they have put each other through a lot. The wounds they have inflicted to each other have started to heal only now, after over eight and an incredibly troubled reunion. The feelings that they have shared, the good and bad alike, have always been passionate, intense, blinding.

He is glad that they have been given a chance to patch things up. He is happy to have Chance in his life. The other makes him a better person, even if he might never admit this out aloud. And he loves the man, he does, with the same fervor he had loved Clarissa all those years ago. He doesn't want to lose him again, no matter what. He'd go to the end of the multiverse and back to keep him by his side, and he is ready to do it.

However, Chance is not Rick. No one could ever be like his counterpart, no one could ever mean what his other self means to him.

Rick is his best friend, the love of his life, his other half (literally in a way), his soulmate. He'd give up the whole multiverse for him, leave behind everything he has, loves and has ever known just for the chance to be with him.

In a scenario where he's risking to lose them both, with no option other than picking one of them...He would hesitate, yes, but only for a few moments. The choice is painfully obvious, even if that doesn't make speaking the answer out loud any easier.

being the third itoshi sibling came with expectations: mainly to be born with cleats on your feet and an obsession with kicking things into nets. but somewhere between sae’s cold indifference and rin’s chronic inability to have fun, you realized soccer was not your destiny. you didn’t want to pass or shoot or dribble. you wanted to punch things. preferably people. and that’s how you ended up boxing while your brothers were busy being the emotional support walls of famous football clubs. 

you came home one day with a swollen eye and a busted lip, casually biting into a sandwich like you hadn’t just gone twelve rounds with a girl who looked like she drank protein shakes for breakfast and punched trees for fun. rin glanced at you from the couch, not even blinking. “what happened to your face?” 

you looked up mid-chew. “won the match. with my skull.” 

sae walked in behind him, took one look at your face, sighed like someone who aged ten years instantly. “mom thought you’d be the normal one.” 

“well she shouldn’t have put all her eggs in this genetically repressed basket,” you said, voice muffled by bread. “also, the other girl looks worse. i made her question her life choices and possibly see the light.” 

“she was fourteen,” rin muttered. 

“and yet still taller than me. i had to do what i had to do.” 

training with them was worse. one time you convinced rin to spar, just light work, no face hits, promise. ten seconds in, you body shot him so hard he dropped like a sack of trauma and lay on the mat looking up at the ceiling like it had personally betrayed him. “did you just punch the soul out of me?” 

you knelt beside him, all sweet and innocent. “you dodge emotions so well, rin. i thought your abs could take a little physical pain too.” 

sae, in his older brother way of expressing affection (aka buying you things and still not making eye contact), once gifted you a pair of custom gloves. matte black. embroidered with “itoshi menace.” you were genuinely touched. you’d never received something so cool. you were about to thank him when he casually added, “there’s a GPS tracker in the wrist. you disappear after matches and i don’t trust you.” 

“what am i? a flight risk?” 

“yes.” 

family dinners were a delightful mix of commentary on your footwork, rin mumbling about your form being too open, and you threatening to throw mashed potatoes at anyone who brought up cardio. every time you lifted your fork, it was a flex. not emotionally. physically. your biceps were stronger than their coping mechanisms. 

you weren’t a prodigy. you weren’t a soccer genius. you were the younger sibling with fists of fury, a resting fight face, and the distinct ability to make both your brothers flinch when you raised your hand too fast near them. they didn’t say it, but you knew they feared you more than they’d ever feared a match. which meant, in your books? 

you were absolutely winning.

I'm going to explain to you why Altan, Qara and Chaghan are the characters that were telling us in advance about the end of the trilogy and the trifecta formed by Nezha, Rin and Kitay but we didn't pay enough attention to them

Altan, Chaghan and Qara are the" failed" trifecta

Altan's sacrifice breaks the cycle, paving the way for Rin, Kitay, and Nezha to become the next generation of the trifecta

Each reflects the mistakes of the past: Rin as Altan and Riga, Kitay as Qara and Jiang, and Nezha as Chaghan and Daji, all trapped in the same vicious cycle

In the end, Rin understands that, like Altan, her destiny is to sacrifice herself to break the cycle. Her death, along with Kitay's, leaves Nezha alive and ruling, mirroring Chaghan's fate

In the dynamic of Rin, Kitay and Nezha, it is clear that they represent an echo of Altan, Chaghan and Qara's failed attempt. Rin takes Altan's place as the center of destruction and strength, Kitay represents strategic and emotional stability as Qara did, while Nezha, being the only one left in the end, is a distorted version of Chaghan, the survivor who carries the weight of the world

Rin understands, at the end of the trilogy, the meaning of Altan's sacrifice: not only was it necessary to break the cycle to create something new, but his sacrifice was also an act of love towards her, giving her the opportunity to build a future that he never had. Rin's sacrifice reflects that understanding, breaking the cycle of hatred and revenge that Riga perpetuated in his generation

I'm bad at open-ended prompts, so I just dug through my drafts and grabbed the first unpublished ramblings that came up:

Whenever I see HSR videos talking about how this new character is a must-pull, or how if you skip them on release you'll ruin your account, or how you might as well not even play the game if you don't have the shiny new toy, I feel a little more jaded (pun intended) about tierlists and meta rankings and new-character hype in general.

I remember people saying you'd regret not pulling for Seele if you wanted your account to be viable, back when the game first released. Same with Jingliu when she came out. Acheron. Firefly. Feixiao. A veritable revolving door of FOMO, bc that's the profit engine for gacha games.

People joke about "waifu over meta" but like. I genuinely believe you'll have a better time playing the game if you pull for characters bc you enjoy their characterization and gameplay rather than bc you're expecting them to sit at the top of the meta until the end of time.

Can my painstakingly buffed Ratio outdamage a moderately built Feixiao? No. But autism obsessions are free and so was he. Can my E3 S2 Clara clear things as easily as an E0 Yunli? Probably not, but I love seeing her robot dad blast holes through the latest dumbass who thought it'd be a good idea to hit a "defenseless" little girl.

Power creep is inevitable. Build the characters and teams you like. Sometimes they'll lose relevance, while other times they'll pleasantly surprise you (my day-one Himeko stocks are THRIVING).

guess what my homies after well over half a year i come back with a massive, 6k word chapter.

this was a bitch and a half to make. i mean last bit was posted pre-holiday, holidays came and wrecked my shit cause yknow, retail. then Lightfall launches but i get into a disgusting depressive episode that carries me thru april. all in all i did not spend most of the time writing.

ive got tons of ideas floating around, per use', and i've been working on them a lil bit all at once -- kinda like an adhd ridden squirrel as i described it. i mean, i did post that one fic about a new character i came up with, unrelated to these homies. i do that a lot. this brain just dont stop coming up with new things sometimes.

since this takes place in Dawn, and that was over three years ago, memory is spotty at best. Had to look up a video of a Sundial run to get the detes of the mission. and by that i mean excruciating detail. i wouldn't have it any other way tbh. i like my shit to be slow, giving you time to digest what you're reading. i hope it comes across right.

the lil post bit at the end was hard to come up with. imitating social media in fiction is tricker than expected! no wonder so many folk get it wrong. Honestly i wanted to include comments, show case the weird names i've come across while playing destiny, but in order for me to confidently do that I wanted to use a post as reference. unfortunately reddit, the site i was using as a basis since it's easiest to mimic in plaintext, doesn't want you to really look at older posts in a nice way. thats just how social media is now though, aint it. everythings all about the algo.

I was gonna setup a scene where the obelisks were setup in the beginning, but i scrapped it one way or the other. since that choice was made last year, i dont remember if i just didnt know how to do it, or couldnt find a good enough article to reference the questline cause its that too far back in my memory. I do remember needing to make sure pointe linked the tangled shore, while rin linked mars. Otherwise i would've given her steelfeather.

I've been playing the game since Shadowkeep when it went free to play, but somehow steelfeather repeater is still my most used weapon in pve content. 13k kills. my second highest would be gnawing hunger at a nice 9500, but thats still wild! I only was able to use the weapon for a few months before it got sunset, and i still havent used another gun as much as that. maybe i just dont play destiny as much compared to Shadowkeep..

Anyways, enough ranting. hopefully i'll get the next chapter out before next october lmao

have this vague idea for an aoex AU that I'm still tinkering with wherein Rin and Yukio are raised seperatly by Yuri and Shiro respectively... but they also don't know the other exists.

something something, despite Yuri running into Shiro on that day, his pursuers from Section 13 don't arrive until the following night, so he and Yuri have already parted ways and she doesn't get brought into Asylum. instead she winds up in the care of an orphanage- but like it's destiny or something, she and Shiro flit in and out of each others lives for years- until the unknown demon possessing Gorou tracks her down and she's brought into Section in order to help contain him.

from there, canon events roughly happen the same way- but once Satan flees Section, Yuri decides that she's going to track him down on her own. she disappears off the radar entirely for months, and when she finally returns, she shows up on Shiro's doorstep carrying two infant children. she asks Shiro if he'll look after the younger one for just awhile, and leaves Yukio with him.

(and then she never returns.)

in which yuri was able to pacify satan on her own for awhile- until his body began deteriorating, and he returned to section 13. discovering she was pregnant, she knew that they had to be satan's children- and she knew what would happen if anyone found out about them. she has them in secret, but after the events of the blue night it becomes clear to her that demons are pursuing her- so she relies on her old friend to give at least yukio a safe place.

she raises rin herself, while living on the run- hiding from demons and the order and the Illuminati alike. mephisto secretly aids her, providing her with the kamikakushi key, and teaches rin how to hide his more demonic appearance. then one day, when he's fifteen, rin arrives home to find his mom missing- with only signs of a struggle left behind.

determined to find her, rin uses one of the keys she left behind (her copy of the section 13 key) that leads him to the cram school- where he promptly gets mistaken as a cram school student and is lectured for being out of uniform on his first day. one thing leads to another, and before he knows it, mephisto has arranged it so that rin has enrolled in cram school- and in true cross academy, where his roommate turns out to be none other than the young cram school teacher who mistook him for a student in the first place-
