EVERY FEMALE CHARACTER THAT I LOVE (in alphabetical order) RILEY MATTHEWS - GIRL MEETS WORLD Welcome to Rileytown. I twirl around when I’m happy. I dance by myself. Because that’s who I am. And if I do something good, I give awards to myself so that maybe I’ll do something good again.

what do you think of the whole maya having «turned in to» riley thing?? do u think there is truth in that, or do you think she just changed on her own and people started implying that her growth was just the copycat effect of being around riley so much?? ive never really been sure what i think of that whole thing!?! i feel like it might be a mix of both, but that they were wayyyyy to dramamtic about her not being «herself» anymore, like people change, thats what we do, it doesn’t always mean we have «lost ourselves» like they told maya she had. what do you think? 💖💖💖💖💖
Hello! Thank you for sending this, because there’s a lot to be said, so let’s get into it!

To answer your question, it’s a mixture of yes and no. The reason why I say yes is because, if you can, rewatch girl meets world of terror 2. The scene where riley and maya empty their brains (that whole animation scene), it really tells a lot without explicitly saying it. Maya’s head was full of rileys, “don’t do this” “be like me”, and whatever else she said (it’s been a while since I’ve seen it). But that is why I say yes. This triangle situation was really taking an emotional toll on Maya, and she needed someone to just give her a little nudge back to who she was after girl meets hurricane. She just needs someone to restore the hope in her, and the hope that everything would turn out how it was supposed to. However, the only person who could do that (*cough* Lucas *cough*) was off figuring out his own feelings and he wasn’t able to see Maya’s crisis in time. By the time he realized what was happening, Maya was back in Mayaville and she wouldn’t listen to him, hence why she stepped back from him in girl meets true maya. The only person who was around was Riley and even though it was unintentional on her part, she pushed Maya back into who she’s always seen, which is a Maya who is upset with herself because she thinks she’s the reason why her father left, someone who didn’t have hope, and that’s not who Maya was anymore. Riley couldn’t see that because she wasn’t in a place where she could actually see that she and Lucas weren’t the end all, be all. That there was a chance that Lucas and Maya had something real, and that the feelings she thought she had for Lucas were actually for someone else (can you guess who? Lol).
The reason why I say no is because in girl meets triangle, when maya’s crisis is in full effect, she’s still thinking about the decision that has to be made and that they need to include Lucas because he’s a part of it. However, Riley doesn’t want to hear it because she’s not ready. I fully believe that the triangle dragged as long as it did because Riley wasn’t ready, Maya wanted to make sure Riley was happy, and Lucas didn’t want to hurt either of the girls, plus he was still figuring out his feelings for each of them. Like I said before, Maya was emotionally stuck, because she was worried about Riley, while also trying to deal with her deep feelings for Lucas. I don’t know if she realized how deep her feelings actually were, but we all could see that her feelings were very different from Riley’s. So, she was going through all of that, and trying to hang on to the hope she got since the middle-to end of season 2. That’s a lot to go through emotionally, so she did go a bit into rileytown, her hair and outfits say so. But she wasn’t as far in as Riley thinks she was. She never “became riley”, she was still very herself, just with hope and confidence (plus a new wardrobe, curtesy of Shawn).
Michael Jacobs called season 3 the “season of feelings”. Seasons 1 and 2 were friendship and growth. Riley and Maya’s friendship wouldn’t have survived if Lucas and Maya got together before Riley was ready. Like Cory said, “feelings can tear apart friendship and growth”. At the end of the day, girl meets world was about Riley, Maya, and their friendship. Since Riley wasn’t near the level of growth Maya was at, it was unfortunately Maya’s growth that had to be diminished to save the friendship. But the best part about growth is that it can be restored, which we started to see in girl meets IDo. And who helped lead Maya down that path again? The same person who helped her gain hope, and if we would’ve gotten our season 4, we would’ve continued to see that growth.
Also, if you realized it, Riley did start to grow during the back half of season 3. Because after ski lodge, what happened with Riley and Lucas’ relationship? Barely anything right? That’s because as Michael Jacobs said, in ski lodge part 2, the characters made the “wrong decisions”. That means that by Lucas choosing Riley, he made the wrong decision. Now how would we know how a character makes the right decision, look at girl meets goodbye. When Topanga was trying to figure out what to do about London, Eric told her to find her quiet place, which turned out to be Topanga’s. She sat there and made the right decision, which was to stay. Now, another character also sat in a quiet place to think about a decision. Can you guess who it was?
Lucas!
In girl meets upstate, he went to the bay window to wait for the girls to tell them his decision, and he sat there for quote “5 hours”. Who did he decide on? We never got to find out because maya didn’t give him the chance to, but given the context, the answer was Maya. Topanga was able to say what her decision was, Lucas didn’t, and in turn he wasn’t given the chance to say the right decision (Maya) and therefore made the wrong decision (Riley).
Now getting back to what I had said earlier, in the back half of season 3, Riley and Lucas barely interacted. That was because (and remember, this is just based on my observation), since Lucas and Riley had pushed one another to the level of growth that they could, they couldn’t help each other anymore. They needed other people (Maya and Farkle respectively), to push them further. Riley didn’t realize it yet, but she was starting to outgrow Lucas and if we got our fourth season, we would’ve seen Riley realize that Lucas wasn’t who she made him to be, and she then would’ve looked back at everything and seen that while her intentions were good, she was wrong about a lot, and from there, would’ve been on her own journey of growth.
I know this post got out of hand, but there is a lot of complexity to these characters. But I hope this helped answer your question, and please feel free to ask me again, if you need clarification on anything I’ve said!

Some friendship... (also I'm fucking up past and present tenses, but idgaf)
You know I just realized how absolutely humongous a crock of shit the whole Maya turning into Riley because she's getting better grades thing is, and that Riley only was accusing her of that because of Lucas. I mean, I knew it was bullshit before, but I never really though of how gigantic a 💩 it was until today.
Girl Meets Father is the fourth episode of season one. In that episode, Cory gives Maya an F on her test. Maya gets upset that she failed the test.
Maya tells Riley that "sometimes, I'm not so proud of who I am".
Maya tells Riley and Cory that she "tried to write like I was smart", Riley responds that Maya is smart.
Cory corrects Maya on one answer of the test saying "it's a tiny difference but an important one. Because if you know it, Maya, you don't fail". Maya then replies "I want to not fail".
Riley was encouraging Maya, while Cory was quizzing her on the subject of the test.
Maya says to Cory: "I just don't wanna fail, Mr. Matthews.
We go from that (Riley encouraging Maya to grow and better herself) to season three, Girl Meets Triangle, where Riley accuses Maya that the person that Maya has grown into is not who she really is.
Riley tell the art teacher that "Maya's a rebel". That Maya dances on teachers' desks, is the queen of detention and the president of Mayaville.
Riley is saying that Maya needs to be fixed because "she's been getting good grades, she's behaving all over the place".
Maya tells Riley, "I'm me! I've always been me, I'm always gonna be me! Nothings going to change that!", Riley retorts with"you haven't stood on a teachers desk or been in detention for a long time. You sold your house in Mayaville and you moved to Rileytown."
No matter what Maya says, Riley keeps insisting that Maya turned into her, blah blah blah.
Riley goes on about how Maya's style has changed towards Riley's style.
So, in the beginning of the series Riley was encouraging Maya to grow and do better. Maya even told Riley that she's not proud of who she is. Maya does mature and grow...
THEN Riley finds out that Maya likes the same guy as her. That can't happen, she can't have Lucas choosing Maya; so she accuses Maya of becoming her and wants Maya to become that failure that Maya thought she was in the beginning of the series (plus telling Maya that while Riley will have one husband, Maya will go through 5 husbands and that Lucas won't be one of them). Riley accuses Maya pulling the fire alarm, of stealing from the cafe (for me, that kind of accusation is something that a friendship can never bounce back from) and she basically forces Maya to revert back to the person she wasn't proud of being, to believe that she doesn't deserve good things or good guys... all because they like the same guy.
Thus, by the end of the series; Riley destroyed all of Maya's growth and forced Maya's regression and Riley became a hypocrite.

“Mayaaa, that’s the best universe!” Riley exclaimed in sing-song, throwing an arm around her best friend’s shoulders to give her a grateful squeeze for playing along with her imagination game so wonderfully. She hadn’t expected her friend to come up with something more Rileytown than she herself would have even thought of. Maya truly did know her better than she knew herself, but that was no real surprise after all their years of friendship. “But any universe where we’re together is the best universe, and I’d find you in every universe, so I guess they’re all the best,” she mused, still holding onto Maya as she tilted her head and pondered, as she tended to forget to let go of the other girl once she was wrapped around her. “But purple cat plushie universe is definitely my new favorite. I can’t believe I was gonna say getting tacos…”
Tumblr media
“What’s alternate universe you doing right now?” -Riley ( @rileysmiley )
“Hmm, let’s see—” Crossing her legs as she leaned back against the seat from where the two of them sat at Topanga’s, the blonde made a thinking face as she pretended to think real hard. There were many wild things she could end up saying, the most craziest and insane things that could have Riley’s eyes popping out either in horror or at awe. And while it would’ve been a lot of fun to say something that could have her best friend freaking out, Maya decided to go for making the brunette at awe instead. “I’ll say I’m in the jumbo cat plushie universe where instead of humans, everyone’s a jumbo plushie shaped like cats.” The smaller of the two ultimately ended up saying as she glanced back at the taller. “Not only that, but they’re all vary in color too, and there is a version of all of us there. And yours—” with a cheeky smile on her face, Maya leaned over towards her best friend before booping a finger against Riley’s nose “is all glittery and purple!”

Warm
Laughter. Warmth. I feel his hand squeeze mine and my heart swells with belonging. I am loved. He loves me. I never have to worry, I never have to doubt. I lean into his chest, hard muscles but soft skin and warmth radiating from his heart that beats slow and methodical. My breathing matches his and with every inhale I steal more of him into my lungs. I will remember this smell forever. I never want to be away from him. I never want this to end, and yet
I awake. Cold. There is nobody next to me. Empty space in an empty bed. My heart feels broken all over again. No not broken. Cracked. All the love and warmth has flown out and I am alone.

Girl Meets Rileytown (GMW Season 2, Ep:17) Appreciation post because my mom happened to pull it up while we were watching TV and it's one of my favorites:
"It's like I have an elephant on my chest!" "I am most a Labrador!"
History lesson is the story of Alexander Hamilton and that's my favorite because ✨Hamilton✨
Zay's flannel is on point as usual.
The ice cream duel- "Back in Texas, we call this a Wednesday." "Wait a minute, something's wrong" "oh THAT could've gone bad!"
Reference to Farkle's getting bullied
"DON'T mistake my size and demeanor for a lack of crazy, because I got it, and I'll use it!"
Rowan and Sabrina's acting, in this epsiode especially, is so real and powerful. 10/10
Lucas just casually breaking the drawers off so he can defend Riley is GOALS
"Y'all just come in through the window? I don't like it. Impolite! By the way, I grabbed some cereal. You're out of milk. Now."
And then a second wonderful flannel for Zay!
Mr. Matthews going through the names of all the background students.
French Riley's accent and how 100% supportive of it Lucas is. (Which gets a callback in season 3)
Riley facing her fears and recognizing that, she has grown, but that growth didn't come easy.
All the guys' smug expressions when Riley says "Is that why we're having ice cream?"
Idk this whole episode is perfect.

Me watching a few years back of "Girl meets Rileytown" when Riley calls Maya "a bully", and remembering certain ways Maya treated her in previous episodes, and thinking that Riley calling her this ain't exactly inaccurate:

A Roadmap of Lucaya: Season 2
I’m back! Sorry this took so long, but I’m back at work (boo!) and that’s eating up a lot of my time. But since it’s a holiday today, I decided to finally get this up.
One quick note: There were SO MANY MOMENTS leading up to Texas that I decided to focus more on the important ones. For real, the original version of this post was uncomfortably long. I’ll summarize the smaller moments at the end of the post.
Without further ado, season 2!
Mr. Squirrels: This is where things start getting interesting! Lucas finally teases Maya back, and she’s upset about it (though more so at Riley than him; however, she’s not pleased with him). Lucas tells Eric that Maya teases him every day, Eric asks why, and he doesn’t answer. Zay straight up says he’d like to know why, but there’s no response from Lucas. Guys, these episodes are only 21, 22 minutes long; literally every minute is important. The fact they spent time on this exchange is very, very telling! Alarm bells should be going off for the audience right now.
Also, there’s this exchange, from Lucas to Maya: “You want to tangle with me?” “Not yet.” HMMM.
Rules: Here we’ve got what is inarguably the flirtiest moment between any two characters of the entire series. If you watched the shirt grab/street cred scene out of context, you’d assume these two characters were together, or at least each other’s love interests. It’s that obvious.
Also, Lucas runs off to Mayaville, leaving RileyTown in the dust.
New Teacher: Maya makes fun of Lucas for riding a sheep, which is some clever as hell foreshadowing. This is also the episode where Auggie’s reading Archie comments and asks if two girls who like the same boy can stay friends. More foreshadowing, even though it’s not strictly a Lucaya moment.
Yearbook: Lucas and Maya win Best Couple in the yearbook. The whole class ships them (they’re like fire!) and while Maya’s a little surprised by all of this, neither she nor Lucas react all that strongly to it. Suuuuuper interesting Lucas doesn’t reassure Riley about it.
Creativity: This is a huge one, guys. Maybe one of the biggest pre-Texas episodes for them.
Lucas is very passionate about not wanting to lose the arts program for Maya’s sake. He calls her a great artist, and says (and I quote): “Well, I don’t want [the arts program getting cut] for Maya. I want Maya to be happy.”
They hold each other’s gaze for so long that Zay, our #1 Lucaya stan, actually comments on it. Riley finally notices. Zay also reveals in this episode that Lucas referred to Maya as the Blonde Beauty. Maya is surprised and Lucas is suuuuper uncomfortable.
Cory & Topanga: This is a major signal of how Maya feels. We see a cute Corpanga flashback, where they high five and it’s obvious they both feel sparks.
After this flashback, Maya tries to chase Farkle, but Lucas intercepts and guides her back to her chair. Maya turns to look at him with a bewildered look on her face, but doesn’t say anything. To directly contrast this, Maya and Farkle later high five and she straight up says she doesn’t feel anything.
Rah Rah: A final pre-Texas flirt moment. While watching Riley try out for cheerleading, Lucas covers Maya’s eyes while leaning in and ducking behind her. Just in case we needed another clue that these two are more than okay with being physically close with each other.
Also, this scene takes place in the gym. It’s funny to contrast this to that scene in Flaws, where Maya jumps on his back and he tells her to get off. It also takes place in the gym. Not that important, but I wanted to point out how far along these two have come!
Anyway, and that’s it. We arrive at Texas after this episode, when the beans get spilled and everything’s out in the open. So, let’s put it all together and see what can gleam from it.
Early on in the season, we see massive, anvil-sized hints that Lucas lets Maya tease him because he likes her. Right after that, we’re given the biggest flirt moment of the series, and following that is foreshadowing of the triangle. None of this is a coincidence.
If that’s not enough, things continue to ramp up even more. Lucas is passionate about supporting Maya and announcing to the whole class he wants her to be happy, which is way more than he’s ever done for Riley, his supposed OTP. We see later on Maya realizing she feels something for Lucas when he touches her, and in case you missed the hint the first time, they circle back to it by contrasting her reaction to Farkle. Remember what I said about how literally every minute counts during a 21/22ish minute show? Yeah, this Lucaya moment was a big deal. Same thing with the prolonged eye contact in Creativity - they spent time on Zay commenting on it, Riley noticing it, and of course, on the moment itself. If you can spin that some other way, I’d love to hear it.
(It’s interesting to me that they signalled Lucas’s feelings first, earlier in the season, and Maya’s feelings much closer to the big reveal. I personally think the GM Cory & Topanga moment was sort of a final “hey everyone, in case you haven’t pieced it together yet, here you go” situation, but that’s just my take.)
Before I wrap this up, I wanted to say that it’s a shame Belief was post-Texas. It has some amazing stuff in it in terms of both Lucaya and Riarkle, so I think I’ll do a separate post on it. The core four’s dynamics this season were very interesting, with Belief being among the most telling. So that post, as well as some Riarkle stuff, is in the works!
As promised, the non-essential Lucaya moments of this season:
-Lucas being thrilled about Maya’s middle name being revealed (New World)
-Maya somehow knowing Lucas’s grandpa is called Pappy Joe (Pluto)
-Mr. Squirrels Goes to Washington: Maya calls Lucas by his name for once and says, somewhat sweetly, she’s always known his name. Lucas is pleased. She calls him Lucas a lot in this season.
-Semi-Formal: Lucas gets all flustered when he realizes he’s dancing with Maya
-RileyTown: Lucas is chosen to be on Maya’s side of the duel in case he needs to “contain” her. It’s another cute flirty moment. Maya is impressed by/attracted to Lucas’s strength.

“ Riley, take a hint, please, so we can all be done with this. “
Did Topanga ever find out that Riley was being cyberbullied? Did she ever find out that the thing that bothering Riley in the bakery was actually her being blackmailed, threatened, and cyberbullied bullied for weeks on end?
