Chapter 1 – Greetings.

He was forced into it, no way in hell would he ever do it on his own. But his also forced councillor thought it would help him to have connections to the outside world and ensured him that if it didn’t work out within two months, he could stop trying and never do it again. But he couldn’t tell her that or it would be ‘cheating.’

Which would probably deter people but as a chronic people-pleaser, I just couldn’t let that run. So, I tried my absolute hardest to fill my letters with copious amounts of joy so that there’s no way he couldn’t write back.

January 13th

I was only told your call-sign to ensure maximum confidentiality – rules right. They told me that you were the only one who could tell me your real name so if you ever feel comfortable enough, I will happily learn all about you!

Here is some information about me; my name is Y/N, I am always helping people out for work (quite interesting if I do say so myself), I love to bake in my free time and my favourite time of the year is autumn (I just LOVE the mix of weather).

I hope you are doing well, I’m not sure if you received the letter I sent as you haven’t replied so I’m trying again just to make sure. My name is Y/N and I have a black Labrador that I love so much. 

I have a hectic work schedule and I am always flying all over the world to help people. So I won’t always be able to write to you consistently. I hope that’s okay!

Instead of questions, I thought I would tell a little joke;

Dear ‘Ghost’,

This will be the last letter I am writing to you as I believe someone could get through to you, it just won’t be me. So, I have requested to be swapped buddies. 

I think it might be someone who’s in your unit, I think his name is John or Johnny – something like that. And I’m told I will be a better suit to them and their personalities.

So I hope you stay safe and are able to speak with someone who you can let your guard down too; even though they will never be as funny as me. Teehee :)

I’m quite sad that it didn’t work out as I thought we could have both benefited from it, but you know what they say – it is what it is. And at the end of the day, he needs someone he can truly feel comfortable talking to and I never did get to know him so it doesn’t affect me much in those terms. Even if a month was wasted by waiting for a never-to-arrive letter. Well the true term would be never-to-be-write-or-sent but we digress.

The birds hum a beautiful harmony as I post the final letter through the poorly painted post-box on the end of my road. As I turn to leave, the clouds above me start weeping uncontrollably at my departure.

I’ve never been one for signs but that can’t have been a coincidence.

No because Alexander Hamilton (both the character and the song) are soooo Hugo coded. I was listening to it just now and the lyrics are literally him. “How does a bastard orphan son of a whore and a Scotsman dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in Caribbean by providence, impoverished in squalor grow up to be a hero and a scholar?” DO I EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN? Hugo grew up an orphan, someone of no importance or purpose and ended up completing the Seven Trials of Demanitus, finding the Eternal Library, and becoming a scholar of high rank in Corona. Like??? And then the lyrics “Got a lot farther by working a lot harder, by being a lot smarter, by being a self starter” literally just explains how hard he had to work his whole life to survive and be successful. “Left him with nothing but ruined pride, something new inside, a voice saying ‘Alex you gotta fend for yourself!’ He started retreating and reading every treatise on the shelf.” Perfectly encaptures how young Hugo felt after being betrayed by someone he thought was his friend (got left behind on a thieving job) and that was the turning point in his life where he realized everyone is selfish and only out for themselves, so he should be too. “Started working, clerking for his late mother’s landlord, trading sugarcane and rum and all the things he can’t afford” He starts working for Donella and stealing all these expensive things from the rich, snobby people who don’t deserve it. “When America sings for you will they know what you overcame? Will they know you rewrote the game?” In this case America would be Team Radical, when they trust and befriend Hugo, do they know his history? Do they know who he really is, how much he fought to get to where he is? “We fought with him” said by Team Radical. “Me? I died for him.” Nuru. “Me? I trusted him.” Yong. “Me? I loved him.” Varian. “And me? I’m the damn fool that shot him.” Donella, talking about how she’s the fool who sent him on this mission, who “killed” Hugo in the sense that she broke his spirit by projecting her whole “don’t trust anyone else” mentality. And then obviously there’s the repeated “there’s a million things I haven’t done, but just you wait” which is Hugo promising, swearing to himself that he is going to do something with his life, that people shouldn’t underestimate him as much as they do. Ah. A Hamilton phase. Once knowing all the lyrics, you always know the lyrics.

So Ghost taking his boyfriend to see Hamilton, his favourite musical, as a surprise for his birthday, clearly didn’t think about the after effects.

M/n slipped into his Hamilton phase again. Any small trigger word like ‘no’ will have m/n singing ‘Say no to this’ or just randomly, if the room is too quiet, m/n will start singing the opening number.

So you’d think that after Ghost left his beloved for a month because of his deployment, he’d get over it.

Nope.

“And if there’s a reason he seems to thrive when so few survive, then god dammit I’m willing to wait for it. I’m willing to wait for it.”

Ghost walked into his home, hearing his boyfriend singing ‘Wait for it’ in Hamilton.

What has he done?

It took m/n after the song that his Simon came home. His face turned red before he paused the music on his phone, then he turned and went into Simon’s arms. “Still like Hamilton, huh?” And Simon already knew the answer.

“Yep. I’ve been singing it while you were gone. Thank gods we don’t have any neighbours close.” M/n let out a little chuckle, clearly embarrassed that Simon caught him singing. “Don’t be embarrassed lovie,” Simon’s lips cracked into a smile as he kissed the top of m/n head, “you sound good.”

“I sound like a dying rat.”

“So?” Simon teased, resting his forehead on m/n. “I’m gonna take ya to another musical, maybe it’ll get Hamilton out of your head. Next time I’m off, yeah?” Simon said, gently rubbing small circles into m/n back. “Really?” M/n smiled. “Can you take me to see heathers?” He couldn’t help but ask. Heathers would be amazing to see in real life!

“Really? Heathers? Y’know what, sure. Next time I’m off. I can’t guarantee it to be anytime soon. I’m gonna be busy.” The lieutenant said, making sure that m/n didn’t expect anything so soon.

“As long as you come home at the end of the day, that would be enough.” M/n said. Then Simon paused. “Did you seriously just quote Hamilton?” M/n blinked. “No.”

“You git.”
