Halfway through season 4 of Buffy and Riley lost all good will I had for him in one scene:

(paraphrasing) "you're stupid, self-absorbed, scared, hung up on a guy, and don't appreciate how great you have it being forced to fight the forces of evil during your adolescent years. Nothing you've been through can be that bad. Let's go out!"

Weird (not weird) how once riley shows up and see’s Buffy in all her “shame” (sleeping with spike and working for minimum wage flipping burgers) and she feels completely humiliated having him see her like that - magically money isn’t a problem anymore and she’s not drowning in bills that force her to work AND slay AND raise dawn 🤔

While yes this does reinforce the idea the job was her attempt at “normal girl normal job” as spike says because she couldn’t keep up any other part of the act she used to before her death - this is apart of such a clear pattern of how much focus is on humiliating Buffy in regards to sex and relationships and how that same focus isn’t given to important aspects of the plot.

We get an entire episode about his new life and wife, their wedding etc and they couldn’t be bothered to come up with a fix to buffy’s money problems that are never addressed despite nothing in her circumstances changing????

They want to paint Riley as the hero and “the one that got away” yet failed to take any opportunity to show him actually ACTING like it. They could have EASILY had him showing back up in her life, seeing where she’s having to work and make ends meet and that she LOST HER MOTHER and going “hey I talked to such a such people in charge and got you this big sum of money for both help with the initiative and for your help on this mission” before flying away on his stupid helicopter like the dramatic ass piece of shit he is.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO EASY AND HELPED SO MUCH IN THEIR ATTEMPTS AT MAKING HIM THE HERO

But riley is by and for the male gaze exclusively so rather than actually supporting buffy at all we’re supposed to see him with his scar and “badass” military gear, authority, helicopter and “chill cool girl” wife and be like “wow 🤩 what a dreamy and desirable man! Buffy made such a big mistake!” 🤢 the man who never says anything about joyce or follows up about buffy’s dying comment and is withholding critical personal and mission information and who cheated on buffy and abandoned her and always made her feel horrible for being the slayer and being stronger than him….. YUCK

Season 4 has introduced me to a new love.

trying to finish s5 of angel but jfc I could not care less about fucking wesley (currently skipping like most of his scenes bc I can't stand him lol) and also, the whole wolfram and hart thing is whatever, I much preferred good old angel investigations 💁🏻‍♀️

Is it bad that I kind of liked Riley at first? He seemed like a decent guy... well, that is before he got salty about Buffy being stronger than him and the infidelity storyline

I go back and forth on season 4 Riley a lot. Honestly, I go back and forth on season 5 Riley a lot, before all the lying and cheating and absurd ultimatums and whatnot.

I don't even think saying he was salty about her being stronger is completely fair. Just like girls are socialized that they have to provide certain things and fill a certain role in relationships, boys are too. Obviously a 6'3" farm boy turned military man trained in monster fighting was expecting to play a protective role in any relationship he entered, and 999 times out of 1000, while he would have to adjust to his partner's specific wants and boundaries, that general expectation would be right.

When he realized he couldn't be that for Buffy physically, he understandably had to regroup. And at first it wasn't too hard because Buffy was a little younger and inexperienced, and the experience she did have was nightmarish, so he could feel like he was taking care of her that way-- by still being there in the morning and making her feel safe emotionally. But the more Buffy regained her confidence, the more Riley realized he couldn't keep up with her on any level and she didn't see him as an equal partner she could rely on. And honestly, he wasn't wrong and it wasn't even really his fault. It wasn't Buffy's, either. It just was what it was. The real problem was the absolutely awful way he handled it.

Don't take this defense of him too seriously though because I'll probably be right back to giggling over him getting his ass kicked in Yoko Factor by the time I hit 'post'. I still think he's lame and obnoxious, I just think a lot of that wasn't necessarily his fault.

I'm watching pretty much all the episodes where Riley is a little bitch today and I cannot get past how much he is not trying. He doesn't want to be her boyfriend he wants to be her best boyfriend and he's competing with this guy who was her soulmate and he can't just be cool with that he has to try to be better than him and he has no chance and it makes it so he just stops trying in the relationship

But BUFFY knows that he will never be angel and she doesn't expect him to be so he's pulling back because he thinks there's no chance she could want him and she's left alone during some of the worst moments in her life and THEN he abandons her friends when they're all trying to pick up Buffy's slayer slack while she's going through it

Just... it feels like he's not trying. He completely misses the point in every conversation just-- him trying to get her to cry in the hospital and then he gets upset that she won't cry on him (because she has to support her mom and dawn) and so he misses out on helping her and holding her when she takes her mom home. She is forced to cry over the sink by herself because Riley is too much of a pissbaby to focus on being a good boyfriend even if he can't be the best
