Just listened to: “Doctor Who - The Fourth Doctor Adventures: The Haunting Of Malkin Place”
Tumblr media
Whilst on the way to visit the town where Henry James lived, a chance encounter with a spiritualist on a train sends the Doctor and Romana on the trail of a ghost. It's the most convincing case of haunting he's ever heard of, he tells them. And so, on their arrival, does it appear to be.
Things go bump in the night at Malkin Place. The voice of a crying child. Birds bursting into flight. Strange movements in a seance.
The Doctor is determined there must be a rational explanation. But is science always the answer to everything?
Starring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor and Lalla Ward as the second Romana.
Special guest stars Simon Jones as Mr. Talbot and Denise Black as Mrs. Mountford.
Also starring Gunnar Cauthery as Maurice, Fiona Sheehan as Beatrice, Rikki Lawton as Tom and Phil Mulryne as Jack.
Written by Phil Mulryne.

The award-winning Guildford Shakespeare Company, are proud to announce the casting for their opening production of 2018. Featuring HARRIET THORPE as the Nurse, this will be a site-responsive production staged in Surrey’s largest Georgian church, Holy Trinity.
HARRIET THORPE is one of Britain’s best-loved actresses, best known for her roles in ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, THE BRITTAS EMPIRE, FRENCH & SAUNDERS, THE COMIC STRIP and feature films CALENDAR GIRLS and AB FAB THE MOVIE. Her theatre credits include West End hits WICKED and MAMMA MIA!, as well as numerous appearances at THE NATIONAL THEATRE, most recently in Richard Bean’s GREAT BRITAIN.
Harriet Thorpe
“We are absolutely thrilled to have Harriet as part of the company for Romeo & Juliet” explains Co-Founder Matt Pinches, “Her wonderful comic timing and warmth are the perfect ingredients for Juliet’s Nurse. This is a famously tragic love-story, but there is also a lot of joy in the play, and that is fuelled by characters like the Nurse.”
The title roles will be played RICKY OAKLEY and LUCY PEARSON. Ricky joins GSC for the first time, whilst Lucy last worked with the company in 2015, playing Alice in their promenade production of Alice in Wonderland, staged to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the book’s publication, and Guildford’s links to Lewis Carroll.
There are number of actors joining GSC for the first time, including GORDON COOPER (Lord Capulet) who has been touring the world with STICKMAN, and has been a regular at the KING’S THEATRE in Glasgow, ROBERT ELKINS (Benvolio) who toured this summer with the LORD CHAMBERLAIN’S MEN, and appeared in BBC TV’s PEAKY BLINDERS, and RIKKI LAWTON (Tybalt/Paris) who is a regular voice over artist for BBC RADIO and has enjoyed a number of seasons at THE MILL AT SONNING.
Actors who have previously worked for GSC include NOEL WHITE (Friar Lawrence) who in 2017 played Merlin in The Legend of King Arthur and the title role in Julius Caesar, and JACK WHITAM (Mercutio) who appeared in this summer’s double-bill of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as Demetrius/Flute, and Proteus in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. GSC Co-Founders SARAH GOBRAN (Lady Capulet) and MATT PINCHES (Prince) complete the cast.
As a site-responsive production, Romeo & Juliet will be set in the late-Georgian period. The venue, Holy Trinity Church, was completed in 1764.
Director/Designer team CHARLOTTE CONQUEST (NATIONAL THEATRE, SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE) and NIEL IRISH (ENO, OPERA HOLLAND PARK, WATERMILL THEATRE) return to the company following their recent collaboration on this summer’s 5 STAR The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Joining them are MATT EATON (Sound Designer) and PETER HARRISON (Lighting). The production will also feature choral music composed by MARY MCADAM.

The Fourth Doctor Adventures - The Haunting of Malkin Place
Latest Review: Cast Tom Baker (The Doctor), Lalla Ward (Romana),  Simon Jones (Talbot), Denise Black (Mrs Mountford),  Gunnar Cauthery(Maurice), Fiona Sheehan (Beatrice), Rikki Lawton (Tom), Phil Mulryne (Jack).  Written By: Phil Mulryne, directed By: Nicholas Briggs We first come across the Doctor and Romana in the Doctor’s Baker Street address in 1922. Romana is reading an M R James novel and is questioning the Doctor about what makes a good ghost story, all the while being interrupted by unexplained bangs and bumps from the attic Spooky goings on that for once the Doctor refuses to investigate. To further enlighten themselves, they decide to hop on a train and visit the village where M R James lived. While on the train the pair befriend a spiritualist, Talbot (Simon Jones) , and his assistant Tom (Rikki Lawton), who are on the way to Malkin Place, where their presence has been requested by Beatrice (Fiona Sheehan) and her brother Maurice (Gunnar Cauthery), who claims that Malkin Place is VERY haunted. Of course, the Doctor can never resist a good ghost story, so he and Romana decide to tag along and help.   Doctor Who will of course normally do a ghost story very well, and this one has all of the hallmarks of a classic: A daunting house in the middle of nowhere? Check.  A vulnerable woman who (at the beginning) refuses to acknowledge the danger that she is in? Check. Creepy séances? Check. A mysterious neighbour with an ulterior motive? Check. A great reveal of a scientific explanation by the Doctor? Check.   So why didn't I enjoy it as much as I felt that I should? I'm as surprised as anyone else, as I’ve been loving these Fourth Doctor audio dramas. I suppose there would have to be the odd one that I wouldn’t find up to scratch. I think with this, it was just the predictability of it all. You know that there is something amiss with Maurice, thanks to the opening scene. If this had been held back, and we just get the details of his nightmares, things could have been a little more intriguing. Plus no matter how spooky things get, you know that the Doctor will have a non-supernatural explanation for events – even if it is starting to sound like he might have doubts himself. I did chuckle though at the big reveal as to who was making the noises in the attic of Baker Street.   The sound design is great and reminded me of the recent Knock Knock television episode from its audio abilities. Tom Baker and Lalla Ward are as always very reliable, and the supporting cast is good. I just found the writing by Phil Mulryne a tad pedestrian. I hound the Haunting of Malkin Place to be average stuff I'm afraid.   The Haunting of Malkin Place is available now as a CD or a digital download from Big Finish. http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2017/05/the_fourth_doctor_adventures_the_haunting_of_malkin.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
