Day 2 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam: Xande Ribiero And Gabriel Arges Take Gold
Day 2 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam was a good day for both Xande Ribiero and Gabriel Arges.
Xande won the gold in the 94kg division. He defeated Thiago Pessoa with a Kimura, then Basel Fanous in the semi-finals.
Only Adam Wardzinski stood between him and his medal. But the Polish black belt did not have what it took to stand there for long, and Xande nabbed himself yet another gold.
Always humble, Xande did not let his win go to his head. He applauded Wardzinski’s defense from half guard and criticized what he saw as his own stubbornness:
“I was surprised with the polish defense from the half guard,” Xande said on Facebook. “…and I should have changed the plan and went to the outside, but I was stubborn to try to smash.”
Xande also lamented missing out on a fight with Felipe “Preguica” Pena, who did not make it to the Grand Slam due to issues with his flight:
“I was looking forward to continue my battle with Felipe Pena here in Abu Dhabi,” he told a reporter. “It is a special city and we have been having our own battle at the Grand Slams, where I lost twice against him, very close fights. But unfortunately he couldn’t make it. Adam was tough and technical.”
However, one of Preguica’s teammates was there, and he also grabbed himself some gold.
Romulo Barral black belt Gabriel Arges looked absolutely spectacular at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam, adding yet another gold medal to his collection after an RNC victory over Matheus Souza.
“coming out of this arena with the gold again,” Arges said on his Facebook after winning the 85kg black belt division.
The rest of the Day 2’s medalists are listed below:
Male Black Belt Results

Jesus. Emi Tomimatsu is something.
FINALLY GOT MY EYES ON SOME DEEP JEWELS 1 ACTION: THOUGHTS
Here's a link to the matches I talk about
#11 Emi Fujino vs. Hyo Kyung Song
Complete mismatch on paper, but HKS was a tough test for Fujino
Song probably would have won a kick boxing match, landing a front kick to the face with her first strike, and just being cleaner than Fujino standing
Fujino would swarm with punches, landing a few, clinching. She lost the 1st round probably, but once she got it to the ground in the 2nd it was all but over
Mika Nagano vs. Akiko Naito
Complete mismatch on paper. Complete mismatch in the ring.
Nagano I know most from getting blasted by Invicta fighter, Alex Chambers, but that fight seems to have made her better
Nagano showed a nice southpaw jab and straight left, and nifty misdirection trip takedown
OH! Thank you thank you for letting these girls ground strike to the head. Nagano unloaded anger, and if she didn't CHOOSE to go for the armbar, she would have had her first TKO victory
Celine Haga vs. Sadae Numata
Great back and forth fight. Celine got a little bit fucked over by the officials not deducting a point from Numata for missing weight (shown here my excellent investigative skills), but...
Getting deducted a point for missing weight is crazy. Fight purse deduction is the way to go.
and isn't the fight scored as a whole? So, how could points even be deducted?
Anyways on to the fight
Numata is a beast. She deserved the victory, nice ground and pound and Haga wanted no part of her stand up
If Haga had better back control, I think, she would have won the fight. Twice, Numata escaped from back control to Haga's guard.
And how bout that half guard back take. I never seen it done like that. She had a normal underhook with her left, and her right arm was also kind of underhook the same side
Mizuki Inoue vs. Rikako Yuasa
Impressed by Inoue. Slightly disappointed by Yuasa.
This is my 2nd time seeing Yuasa in no-gi and the armbar attempt early in the 1st was beautiful. Her legs are so fucking dexterous and the guard pull was gorgeous.
I thought Mizuki was gonna pass to side control from the armbar, but Yuasa just kept moving the right way to continue the submission. Good shit.
She set up some nice omoplata's, but other than the armbar, I never really felt Mizuki was in danger. Pretty much zero offence, but she defended all the submissions, and I doubt she'll see too many girls with better grappling than Yuasa in MMA
If Mizuki was allowed to ground strike, or hell, if this was scored with Unified MMA rules, Mizuki might have been given the nod.
After the main event, Fujino/Song, she was joined in the ring by Emi Tomimatsu, Mika Nagano, and Mizuki Inoue. These 4 will participate in the Strawweight tournament to crown the new 115lbs DEEP JEWELS Champ. Inoue/Fujino and Tomimatsu/Nagano are the matchups. (All 4 are pictured)
