Oblivion Battery Episode 3 Review - When Baseball Gets Too Meta
This is the most meta baseball anime I’ve seen. I think I’ve watched way too many anime because I know some of these memes presented in the episode. There’s the crying Chopper face and the Super Saiyan transformation. To be honest, I have an odd sense of humor, so some of these gags made me chuckle a bit.
The first half of the show was comedy as Haruka, Kei and Yamada (I’m just gonna call him Yamada because why not?) were trying to befriend Toudou and Chihaya to get them to play baseball. They first try to befriend them by luring them with written words plastered with signs and posters and then Haruka does the craziest thing by giving them porn DVDs—he even chose them based on their supposed preferences. Then, they decide to hang out at Kei’s house after school and when he realizes his mom was home, he starts freaking out. It turns out that Kei’s mom is as freaky as he is and it’s definitely genetic. She’s hilarious, though. The shot of her asking if his friends are all kissless virgins will definitely be reaction picture material. After friendly banter, Kei, Chihaya and Toudou finally join the baseball club for good. To be honest, even if this was mainly comedy not relating to baseball all that much, it was a nice bonding moment between the five. I was surprised Kei likes simulator games like Story of Seasons and hamster raising games. Given his pervertedness, I assumed he’d like dating sims.
The second half starts the group’s baseball club stint. They mainly do practices, but they later get a request to do a practice match with Teitoku, a private school with a strong baseball team. It turns out that one of the Kiyomine-Kaname battery’s victims, Kokuto, goes to that school. Teitoku is also the school that everyone except Yamada got an offer to but rejected due to frustration or amnesia in Kei’s case. I know for a fact that our main group is going to get clobbered because it’s a sports anime. They cannot win against an elite school as they are now. I do even wonder how Kokuto even got the information that they went to a public school. Is he stalking them? However, the coach and the assistant coach are hilarious! They were the scene stealers of this second half. The way the older coach wanted the four genius players on his team, but when he saw them in a no-name public school, he legit combusted. He wanted his dream team but it couldn’t be fulfilled. And when their skills are being shown, he gets a bit too excited and passes out with the assistant coach, the one with the glasses, to scream for him.
Speaking of Kokuto, what is his deal? Why is he doing all of this? The fact that his team calls him a nice guy but he’s being passively vindictive. I guess I’ll have to wait next week to find out what he’s good at. I am convinced he is a stalker though.
While Kei is whiny, the fact that he got all serious when someone insulted Haruka and even took his role as catcher seriously really shows that despite his flighty and rather frustrating personality, he’s a loyal friend. In fact, these two are such good friends. Haruka doesn’t leave Kei’s side and sticks with him even though he got amnesia and doesn’t remember him all too well now. Kei complains a lot but never leaves Haruka’s side. I guess his body remembers even if his brain doesn’t. That’s very gay of you, Kei.
Kei’s mom and the two coaches voice actors have been revealed via the official Oblivion Battery Twitter page! Mrs. Kaname is voiced by Rikako Aikawa whom I’m most familiar with her Pokemon roles. She mainly does Pokemon voices; some which you might recognize from the anime and spin-off anime like Ash’s Butterfree, Pokemon Trainer’s Squirtle in the Smash Bros games, Blossom’s Nidoran and Ohara’s Fuecoco from Paldean Winds. The head coach is voiced by Tetsuo Kanao, whom I’m not too familiar with. The assistant coach is voiced by the one and only Tomokazu Sugita. If you know who Sugita is, I won’t say anymore. The fact that his role is super comedic in that he’s the straight man to the head coach’s funny man but he’s also funny makes him hilarious. Also, Kokuto is voiced by Takeo Otsuka who voiced Aqua from Oshi no Ko and Jinshi from The Apothecary Diaries.
I do hope that the comedy will tone down next episode as it is a baseball anime and they are in a competition. I know that they’re going to lose to Teitoku and this will motivate the team to become even stronger. What are your thoughts on this episode?

Kenji/Tracey Sketchit. Shinomiya Natsuki. Kashuu Kiyomitsu. Kogarasumaru. Ikaruga Misumi.
These five are my comfort characters and I decided I wanted to make a short clip of excerpts of them singing. These are from their actual character songs, I did not cheat and choose any random songs their seiyuu sing. (Which is why Kogapapa's excerpt seems incomplete, because he sings the other half of the chorus with two others and I needed to focus on their solos.)
Songs chosen...
Minna de Arukou (originally performed by Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi and Kenji with Pikachu, Togepi, Rokon, Mariru and Fushigidane - Matsumoto Rica, Iizuka Mayumi, Ueda Yuji and Seki Tomokazu with Otani Ikue, Koroogi Satomi, Aikawa Rikako, Kanai Mika and Hayashibara Megumi) - Pokémon
Piyo-chan no Uta ( originally performed by Shinomiya Natsuki - Taniyama Kisho) - Uta no Prince-sama
Anata to Watashi to -Kashuu Kiyomitsu solo- (originally performed by Kashuu Kiyomitsu - Masuda Toshiki) - Touken Ranbu -ONLINE-
Medetashi Tsukurigoto (originally performed by Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Shishiou and Kogarasumaru - Maeno Tomoaki, Ohsaka Ryota and Hoshi Soichiro) - Zoku Touken Ranbu -Hanamaru-
Ichi, Ni, Sankaku (originally performed by Ikaruga Misumi - Hirose Daisuke) - A3! - Act! Addict! Actors!

To Your Eternity: 1st Season (2021)
Plot premise: An Orb, known only as It, is cast to Earth to be observed from afar. Capable of changing forms from beings whose reflections It captures, It first becomes a rock and then, due to the rising temperature, moss.
It does not move until one snowy day, a wolf at death's door barely crosses by. When It takes the animal's form, It attains awareness of its consciousness and starts to wander with an unclear destination in mind. Soon, It comes across the wolf's master—a young boy waiting for his tribe to return from a paradise abundant with fish and fruit in the south. Although the boy is lonely, he still hopes those whom he holds dear in his memories have not forgotten him and that he will reunite with them one day.
The boy wants to explore new surroundings and decides to abandon his home with It to find the paradise using the traces his tribe left behind. However, with a heavily injured body and no sight of his elder comrades, what will become of the boy?
Fumetsu no Anata e illustrates the story of an immortal being experiencing humanity, meeting all types of people in many places throughout time.
Network: NHK Episodes (and episode length): 20 (25 mins) Creator: Oima Yoshitoki (manga), Fujita Shinzo (anime) Cast: Kawashima Reiji, Tsuda Kenjirou, Shiraishi Ryouko, Hikisaka Rie, Uchida Aya, Aikawa Rikako, Inagawa Eri, Saiga Mitsuki, Iwami Manaka IMDB | RottenTomatoes
± The emotions in this anime are so intense. It's makes you and Fushi attached only to rip your heart to shreds in a few episodes. I started watched two similarly themed anime at the same time: To Your Eternity is about pain as catalysts for growth, while Frieren seems more about just having to deal with the cycle of life as an elf who just lives very very long. The latter deals with the beauty to be found in the brevity of life VS To Your Eternity's life is peaks and valleys of pain and happiness. More please.

Paprika (Satoshi Kon, 2006)
Cast: Voices of Megumi Hayashibara, Tōru Furuya, Tōru Emori, Katsunosuke Hori, Akio Ōtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera, Hideyuki Tanaka, Satomi Kōrogi, Daisuke Sakaguchi, Mitsuo Iwata, Rikako Aikawa, Yasutaka Tsutsui, Satoshi Kon. Screenplay: Seishi Minakami, Satoishi Kon, based on a novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui. Cinematography: Michiya Katô. Art direction: Nobutaka Ike. Film editing: Takeshi Seyama. Music: Susumu Hirasawa.
Almost from the beginning, motion pictures, with their ability to move rapidly through time and space and their frequent embrace of the irrational, have been associated with dreams. The development of animated movies only heightened the identification, and makers of animated films have always been ready to embrace the dreamlike. Satoshi Kon's extraordinary anime Paprika is not only dreamlike, it's also about the dream state and its psychological potential. The word "psychology" etymologically means "the study of the soul," and nothing gets closer to the soul -- whatever that is -- than dreams, unfettered by reason and mundane actuality. So Kon's film is about an invasion of the dream state, predicated on the idea that technology might eventually allow one to enter other people's dreams -- an invasion of the soul. Kon finds the dreamlike not only in movies or television, but also in other manifestations of the imagination like circuses and parades and toys, and ultimately in the internet, which Paprika herself identifies as one of the "areas where the repressed conscious mind escapes." Paprika is an avatar in the dream world of Atsuko Chiba, a psychiatrist who is using the newly developed DC Mini, technology that allows her, as Paprika, to enter the dreams of her patients. But when one of the developers of the DC Mini begins using it for his own nefarious purposes, the boundary between dreams and waking life is breached, with phantasmagorical consequences. Dr. Chiba and Paprika have to find a way to repair the breach. Any summary of the film is inadequate because there's something recursive about Paprika, a dreamlike movie about movies (and other things) as dreams.

People complained Kassa looked too much like AiAi during performances and they couldn't tell them apart because of their height/hairstyles, they're saying she looks closer to Rikako now. People confuse them during performances too. I hope Rikako grows her hair out longer because of this. It would be nice to see her with medium length hair or even longer.

みんなにとってのいい形は誰かにとっての良くない形になってしまうことがある。けど、あいあいが決めたこと。やりたいことがあることも聞いていたので、もしまだ変わっていないならその道を本当に応援したいです。
Murota: A circumstance which is comfortable to some people can be uncomfortable for other people. But it's all Aiai's decision. She once told me that there's something else she wanted to do. If her mind hasn't changed, I'd like to support her going that path.
