I’ve just finished going back over Tahiri Veila’s character arc in NJO, and I’m kind of curious about the degree by which her two personalities - Tahiri and Riina - have ‘merged’ in a sense after the Force Heretic trilogy. She seems to no longer have a split-personality/artificially-induced DID, and she appears to maintain her overall bright, honest and snarky personality while gaining some of Riina’s personality traits - notably being more rougher and combative compared to her old self - but have they completely ‘merged’ in a true sense? Or does Riina still exist as a separate personality somewhere? The arc honestly feels slightly incomplete from what I can remember, and based on how they completely derailed Tahiri’s characterisation in subsequent books, we never got a definitive answer. Thoughts?

Had Anakin lived and he and Tahiri become the combined figureheads of the Shamed One heresy (or Freed Ones, as they come to call themselves), Tahiri would’ve definitely given Anakin lessons in the Yuuzhan Vong language, maybe with the help of Nen Yim (who defects earlier and lives in this AU). I can also see the inventor/scientist part of Anakin greatly enjoying the Shaper side of Tahiri’s Riina personality, especially when the two merge, since her combined personality now has the personality he’s come to love so much, but also the newfound ‘nerdy’ hobbies that the old Tahiri struggled to connect to him with.

Feral desert child Tahiri ate bugs because she couldn't afford to pass up the sustenance.

Riina ate bugs as part of Yuuzhan Vong polite society.

Put them together, and she'll still randomly grab and eat bugs off the ground, but every time she encounters a new species, whoever's around has to hear a brief review of how it tasted.

I recently thought that maybe one of Tahiri/Riina's first projects as a shaper on Zonama Sekot (during which time she actually just goes by Riina) is examining that unique DNA strand common to all Yuuzhan Vong life and trying to figure out if it really is related to their disconnection from the Force.

I just reread Final Prophecy and thought of a headcanon regarding my characterization of post-NJO Tahiri/Riina and her Force healing:

Part of her philosophy about using her shaper's skillset for healing is that it restores life to its natural state, instead of how the Yuuzhan Vong twisted it to their destructive goals.

I feel like, even though the knowledge base of a Yuuzhan Vong shaper means Tahiri's one of the best healers in the Order, she also has a habit of semi-consciously thinking out loud about exactly how gruesome someone's injuries are, and describing what she's doing in a level of detail that her patients pretty much all agree they could have gone to the grave not knowing.

And she doesn't actually do it, but there's always an undercurrent of unhinged curiosity and you can't help but wonder if she's just going to use you for a shaping project instead.
