Exclusive Interview: Joe Candelaria of Forever Came Calling

I had the pleasure of chatting with Joe Candelaria, lead singer and guitarist of Forever Came Calling this past week. His friendly vibe and comforting laugh made me so thrilled to hear what the band has to share with us at Arlene’s Grocery. You may remember Forever Came Calling from their fame in the pop punk scene in the early 2010s, but FCC returned from a hiatus with a whole new energy starting with the release of their Retro Future EP in March of 2018.

You’ll be excited to know that a new EP is on the way. Originally intended to be an acoustic album, the new EP quickly grew into more than what Joe could have imagined. Joe reminisced on the early stages of the EP, which began back in November. “It started off as an acoustic thing and I’m working with Kyle Black on it. As he heard the songs he was like, ‘dude, these can’t just be acoustic songs. I feel like they’ll get lost.’” Naturally the songs, with a pop-infused rawness, became full band masterpieces that differ from anything they’ve put out before. How’s your tour been going so far?

“It’s been really fun! Doing the band this way is much different than normal, but I’ve grown to love it a little bit. It’s cool to not be loud all the time.”

Your upcoming show at Arlene’s is a part of your North American Acoustic Tour. Being a musician myself, I know playing stripped down can be a little stifling at times but also has the potential to be incredibly intimate. What pushed the decision for this tour to be acoustic?

“For this run, I recorded a new EP that was initially going to be acoustic but then the studio thing kinda just kept growing, and now it’s just this total other monster...but that was the original push…I had always kind of played around with different versions of FCC songs...or like changing them up. I’m a big Bruce Springsteen fan, and Cyndi Lauper. She put out a record called The Body probably about 10 years ago now, and it was her hits but done in a really cool way--stripped down, with different arrangements. And I was like, that is so awesome. I would love to  do something like that one day. Springsteen just did Springsteen on Broadway and that was a really cool thing that has been recently influential to me. So just hearing some stuff like that, I was like, “you know what?  I wanna do something like that.” So that’s kind of what this whole tour is based on. Also adding a new adventure element to the band. FCC’s a punk band, pop punk, whatever you wanna call it. And so you get used to playing all these loud, fast, go go go….and this [tour] I wanted to be the antithesis of that.  It’s cool to see how it’s translating and it’s also nice to sing and not shout, haha.”

About a year ago you released the Retro Future EP and described it as having a new energy. Do you feel that the upcoming EP a continuation of that same energy?

“Yes and no. It’s new energy in the sense that I’d like to believe that I’m continually growing, but I also feel like that’s very pretentious to say, and I don’t mean it to be. I’ve always been very into artists like Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, and Jack’s Mannequin. It’s a little bit more like pop-based rock, and that’s kind of where this is headed. I think Retro Future was a little more of us embracing the riffy side of things, and this is me more embracing the melodic side of things...being pretty honest and not censoring myself so much lyrically. I spend a lot of time on lyrics because my lyrics are super personal to me and they’re about things that I’m going through. I live with those people and I live in those situations. So when I write something that I feel like is too honest, I try to figure out a different way to say it because I don’t want to air out all of my business. But, with this one, I approached it like, “well, I’m just gonna say what I have to say, and that’s it.”

A week and a half into your tour, how do you feel like this new energy is being received by your audience? Do you think they like that raw side and the intimacy that’s being presented?

“Yeah! It was something that I think was kind of shocking to everyone involved, including myself. Clearly, when you’re doing not a full band version of something, it’s not that. But the enthusiasm for it, the enthusiasm at the shows, being able to connect with people one on one has just been incredible. It’s also really cool to hear people’s stories because that’s a big part of this too. I’m just hanging out at these shows. There’s no barrier. I just go hang out at merch. If I catch you at the bar and I think you’re tight, I’ll buy you a drink! It’s just very much a hang out. That’s what I wanted the vibe to be, because I’m only able to do this because people care about it. I wanted to reconnect with people who have connected with previous work and just say thank you and also peel back the curtain a little bit and let them hear what the songs are about, and see them in a different way.”

Do you have a tentative release day for the new EP?

“We’re splitting it up. We’re gonna do 2 new songs next week, and then 3 songs sometime in May. There’s an acoustic version of Kansas City, and I did this very Jack’s Mannequin-y version of When You Were Young by The Killers. That’s what’ll be coming out next week, and three totally new songs will be coming out in May.”
