TIKI TIKI BOOM
youtube
I was trying to remember the last time I stayed up until midnight to buy or listen to a new album. Honestly, not since 1997? I certainly never have during the streaming age. And yet the night before Subrosa was released, I set my alarm clock for 23:55 and put on a pair of sleep headphones to listen, the second that it became available in my time zone.
Half asleep, face mashed against my pillow, TIKI TIKI BOOM was probably my single most instantaneous “OMG I LOVE THIS!” reaction of overwhelming aural buzz from the whole album. Just a straight blast of pure Imai serotonin joy. It’s just sheer bubblegum bliss, one of those songs that scratches an itch you didn’t even know you had until you find yourself listening to it 20 times in a row.
What is it with this song? With my music journo head, I’m aware that it’s such a silly little snippet. Musically, it’s hardly there. It’s just one chord all the way through the whole verse. There’s barely a melody. Even the chorus only adds suspended harmonies, rather than actually shifting to a different chord. Yet it's that stompy, swaying RHYTHM that lights up my pleasure receptors like a flight control deck!
The beat is basically Diwali Riddim, a Dancehall backing track originally derived from a brief snippet of Indian handclaps. The full album will likely drive you insane (I had a former flatmate who used to play it on repeat, so it is burned into my brain) but probably the most successful pop song based off it was Lumidee’s Never Leave You. It’s just such an irresistible dance beat that you could basically recite a shopping list over the top of it, and still fill a dancefloor.
youtube
The track starts with a bouncing bass, and an electronic whistle like a radio tuning in, then it’s just one hammered chord and that irresistible beat. And over this tight tension, Imai drizzles one of his signature tongue-twister raps. Honestly, Imai’s singing voice has always been far more about personality than technique, but his sense of flow is undeniable. His quicksilver words tumble out like slippery fish, evocative of the playful wordplay of Mona Lisa - the same burst of surreal rebel imagery wrapped up in doublets and triplets, filled with clever rhyming, consonance and assonance.
The sonic landscape really rewards close listens - although it may sound like a simple march of drums and distorted bass, there are so many bursts of slithering insect noises, machine gun samples and gorgeously grating groans of industrial gears woven through the propulsive beat. The chorus is an absurdly catchy nursery rhyme nonsense with a cute story behind it: Yokoyama-san revealed that the “Tiki tiki boom” riff was originally just a temporary vocal filler on Imai's demo before he wrote proper words. But since the manipulator loved it so much that he sampled it to use it for a rhythm loop, Imai decided to keep it as the main riff.
There’s an instrumental break around 2:00 where Imai just throws all of his weird space noises, industrial samples and mechanical squeaks and groans into the mix, panned playfully about the stereo field. And then it gives way to a heavily flanged-out 3-note guitar solo, scratching away like an infected mosquito bite. It took me ages to work out what it reminded me of: I Hate Pretending by Secret Machines.
youtube
I would be surprised if Imai had ever heard of the psychedelic Texan space-rockers, but (the sadly missed) Benjamin Curtis was one of the few American guitarists I ever witnessed who could match the sheer freeform inventiveness of Imai’s distinctive heavily-processed, melodic-noize guitar style. (That band also had a classic rock-obsessed drummer who Toll would probably really appreciate, too.)
Best moment: around 2:36, at the end of the break, where all the instruments drop out, there’s a sudden sample of a deep, pitch-shifted “TIKI TIKI BOOM!” which flies across the stereo field from left to right like a hand grenade. It’s so silly, and yet so absurdly satisfying.

this album is the very essence of color bass: it fuses melodics and harmony with big, heavy sounds, and experiments with both sound design and the formula of dubstep as a whole. the entire album is articulately crafted down to every layer of every sound, reeking of his touch down to the ploinky snares to the vocal samples to the instrumentation of every melody and progression. nothing on it feels remotely generic, even amongst crowds of imitators. the record is perfectly characterized and overall, while i may not return to every individual song, i will gladly return to the whole for multiple listen-throughs. the production and mixes are clean, as all his are. for non bass music fans, i don't think it will be your thing. for bass music fans, i think you can greatly appreciate what it does even if you dislike it personally.
login and logout are perfectly crafted, with sound design better than most sci-fi media that keeps a charm to it, be it fun in the former or a powerful emotion in the latter.
so sorry turns a voice into heavy, punchy, visceral basses.
neon angel combines multiple styles - electro house mixed with acid mixed with synthwave mixed with brostep all tied together by leah culver's vocals. it is a song like no other.
redline is more typical in construction, but it still hits hard
touhou riddim is a perfect blend of briddim with the melodic, futuristic, digital vibe of the other songs.
my opinion on this could be us has changed over time. i still love the buildups; frank zummo's vocals are exquisite, same with the chords, and the vocal chops in the second followed by the fakeout are very strong. the future riddim drops, which i previously didn't like, now greatly enjoy.
#music for my moots#seriously if any of my moots like dubstep or anything bass music-adjacent i highly recommend just giving it a listen#skip around to find things you vibe with#formerly “mid” to now “it's peam”#SoundCloud

Trap Metal (also known as Ragecore, Death Rap, Hardcore Trap, Industrial Trap and Screamo Trap) is a fusion genre of Trap music with characteristics of Heavy Metal and Nu-Metal. These songs mainly use loud distorted 808 patterns, industrial effects, and heavy harsh vocals. Related genres and styles include punk rap, trap metal, screamo rap, and horrorcore.
Trap artists who blend punk and hip hop elements are mainly referred to as Punk Rap. It is a subgenre of rap that has punk and rebellious characteristics. Short, aggressive, and distorted tracks are mainly used in punk rap, with the duration being one to two minutes long. Here are some popular punk rap artists
Deathstep is a subgenre of Brostep, heavily influenced by Metal genres like Death Metal, Deathcore, Metalcore, and even Black Metal. The genre started out as a broad term for various styles of metal-inspired brostep, but has since become more of an established genre. The early deathstep sound contained more obvious metal influences: featuring heavy use of chopped up guitars, vocals such as screams and death growls, and also often included live drums (particularly for drum rolls). These elements were mixed with bass wobbles and half-time beats to create the effect of a "breakdown". Around the mid-2010s during brostep's decline in popularity, deathstep became much more of an established genre. The genre started to contain less obvious influences from metal, but became darker and heavier than it was in its earlier days. The genre contains influence from various forms of Noise and Industrial music, and has also moved further away from the typical brostep sound, focusing less on accessibility. Many deathstep artists incorporate Riddim into their sound, particularly the genre's atonality, use of repetition to create a hypnotic effect, and off-kilter synths. One of the main elements of deathstep is the use of "machine gun" basses. These are heavy, rapid synths with a very short decay, usually in triplets. Another main characteristic is the heavy, atonal, almost white noise-sounding synths. Even though a handful of artists had already experimented with the deathstep sound prior to its release, the genre name was coined by Bratkilla with his album The Deathstep LP in 2011. This album became one of the main inspirations for many artists in the scene and helped shape the sound of the genre.
