Moonstruck #0 is now available on Gumroad for pay-what-you-want. All proceeds will go to benefit the Hispanic Federation’s Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund.
Tumblr media
Moonstruck #0 is the five-page origin story of the Image Comics all-ages series Moonstruck. This story is in canon and depicts Julie and Selena's turbulent first ever date!
Because of the catastrophically bad hurricane in Puerto Rico (and because our story's heroine is Puerto Rican), 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this mini-issue will go directly to the Hispanic Federation, in perpetuity. We decided to implement a pay-what-you-want system for this story, and we encourage you to give whatever you're comfortable giving.
So what is this, exactly? Well, Moonstruck started as a class assignment at the Columbus College of Art and Design for their annual anthology called Spitball, which is full of five-page stories written by professional writers and illustrated by CCAD students. The class is taught by Laurenn McCubbin, who saw the story that Grace Ellis (writer) and Shae Beagle (artist) put together and offered to edit a full-series version of the story. The rest is history, and here we are, a wondrous team of friends making a comic about a (marginally) more magical wondrous team of friends!

Redefining Mariachi Tradition
All-female Mariachi band, Flor de Toloache approaches the genre of Mariachifrom a completely different perspective.
Xavier Hooper
DISCLAIMER: The responses made by the band members were in Spanish. The quotes included are direct translations.
Since the dawn of Mariachi, a genre of music which originated in Mexico well over 100 years ago, the idea of “machismo,” or masculine pride, has been embedded in Mariachi culture and has become tradition.  According to NPR, “mariachi culture is still mostly about straight men.” (Latino USA, 2015) This idea of masculine pride is a historical issue that persists in nearly all cultures. All-female mariachi group Flor de Toloache feels this burden, according to its members..
“Mariachi is a genre of music that is dominated by man, but the music industryin itself is also dominated by men,” Mireya Ramos, co-founder of Flor de Toloache said. “For example, we get criticized quite often for our pants.Traditionally, women in Mariachi are  supposed to wear a skirt with their hair pulled back. There are ‘rules’ like that.”
The traditional Mariachi outfit for men consists of a bowtie, wide-brimmed sombrero, short boots, a waist-length jacket and fitted pants, embroidered with “botonaduras,” traditional Mariachi buttons that go down the pant leg. The group showed up wearing jackets and skinny pants with these botonaduras, jingling with every step, deconstructing the female Mariachi dress code.
According to Mireya Ramos, the typical Mariachi listeners used to listening to songs in the genre made by men.“Most of the songs in Mariachi are written by men, and men only. And the women that listen toMariachi love it that way, as if they were men themselves,” Ramos said. “A group like us, it’s important not only for the genre of Mariachi, but for the world. We represent female independence, we empower other women through the work that we do.”
The group takes on a different approach to by composing original songs from the perspective of a woman. This change in tone appeals to a larger demographic, reaching out to listeners who want to, or would rather listen to Mariachi composed entirely by females, opposed to the typical songs made by men, according to Ramos. Right now, the band is on tour in the U.S., and recently performed at UNC Asheville. The group has also performed in Mexico, where the genre originated, twice.
“The 2 times that we’ve been, we were really nervous because we didn’t know how the audience would react.” The first time the group went to Mexico, they performed in Guadalajara at the “Festival de Mariachi.”  “The audience seemed to be very excited to see a group that continues to carry on the tradition and bring it all around the world,” Ramos said.
“This year we went to Mexico City for the first time and we played at “Vive Latino,” which is the biggest festival there is in the city, we were nervous, obviously, but there were people in the crowd that knew our songs.”
The group was originally founded in New York by Mireya Ramos and Shae Fiol, both having years of previous experience in other genres of music such as hip hop and jazz. One can see this reflected in the style of music they perform which also implements a diverse cultural background coming from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany,Italy and the U.S. Before the group’s name reached the acclaimed fame and status it’s at right now, band members began performing underground, in the subways of New York City, New York, entertaining the people who traverse throughout the state every day.
“We’ve been playing in the subway for many years. In the beginning of our career, we played in the subway,” Ramos said. “It’s the best position for a group that’s just starting because of all the traffic that it gets.Because of the subway, we got our first article in the New York Daily News, and from there, we were featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.” Since then, the band has performed all over the world in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. With hundreds of thousands of listeners on major platforms like Spotify and Apple Music and even featured on Rolling Stone and NPR’s “Tiny Desk,” with 1.8 million views.
“I’d say that we all do it with a little bit of worry, but we still do it, right?” saidJulie Acosta, one of the group’s trumpet players said. “We keep moving forward in what we want to do without thinking too much about if there’s no opportunity for us. Because that’s something of the mind and if you keep thinking that, you’ll manifest it as well. The opportunities that belong to you will come to you.”

Uncharted AU - Sneak Peek 2
I want to end the day on a positive note. So here’s another sneak peek of the Uncharted AU, this time featuring U.S. Marshals partners Nicole “Scott” and one Xavier Pamela Dolls. Enjoy!
One week earlier
Arlington, VA
USA
The document weighed heavily in Nicole’s hand, even though it was only two sheets of paper. It had been sitting on her desk when she arrived at the office, and she had nearly given herself a papercut when she tore open the tan manila envelope. Her eyes scanned the caption.
Nicole Haught,
Petitioner
v.
Shae Pressman,
Respondent
FINAL JUDGMENT AND DECREE OF DIVORCE
It had taken months of back-and-forth with Shae, followed by property settlement negotiations and what felt like a never-ending period of voluntary separation to reach this point. Nights alone in an empty apartment. Her family’s judgment. The “I told you so’s” lingering unspoken in the air, always present. She ran a hand through her newly cut auburn hair, which curled just beneath her jaw. Shae had always preferred it long, and Nicole had hated braiding it up every day for work. Now she no longer had to.
Nicole had thought she’d feel different now that the divorce was final.  Relieved, maybe. Instead, she felt empty, save for a remorseful twist in her gut.
The office door swung open and Xavier Dolls strode in, all business in a crisply-pressed dark suit, wire spectacles on as he read through a file. Nicole quickly shoved the papers into a desk drawer. Even though her partner had known about the divorce—and the silent toll it had taken on Nicole—she wasn’t quite ready to discuss it.
“You’re late.” His eyes remained trained on the contents of the manila folder in his hands.
Nicole leaned back in her desk chair and glanced at the analog clock on the wall. It read 7:57 a.m. Her shift started in three minutes. She sighed.
“Sorry. Got caught up.”
“I didn’t see you at the gym this morning, either.”
“Needed a break.” And two donuts instead of two dozen crunches.
“You don’t wanna get soft.”
“Heaven forbid!” Nicole made the sign of the cross.
Dolls finally looked up, unamused. “We’ve got a new mission. Direct from Moody.”
That definitely got Nicole’s attention. It wasn’t often that the deputy director himself assigned cases. “What’ve we got?”
“The Earp sisters. Are you familiar?”
“Who isn’t?” She sat up straighter. “Wynonna and Willa Earp. Descendants of the famous lawman turned international thieves. The pair have evaded authorities all over the globe, including…” Dolls gave her a flat stare, and Nicole cleared her throat. “What about them?”
“Turns out there are more than two Earps.” He slapped the folder down on her desk and tapped a candid photo of a young woman around her early 20s, walking down a nondescript street, oblivious to surveillance. “Waverly Gibson.”
“Gibson?” Nicole picked up an accompanying bio sheet.
“Born Waverly Earp,” Dolls explained as he walked to his desk across the small room. “Adopted by a family friend, Augustus Gibson, after their parents died nearly 15 years ago.”
“Waverly Earp,” Nicole repeated softly, examining the photo again. Objectively speaking, she could admit that Waverly was attractive, very much so, with her golden brown hair tied in a long braid slung over one shoulder. But so were her sisters. A family of beautiful—potentially lethal—criminals. “What’s the mission?”
“Undercover infiltration.” Dolls sat in his chair and booted up his laptop. “Secure enough evidence to put these ladies away for a very long time.”
“Through Waverly Earp?”
Dolls nodded. “The other two would sniff out a cop from miles away.”
“What makes you think Waverly won’t either?”
“Intel says Waverly is less experienced than her sisters, having spent the past few years finishing up dual degrees in history and ancient languages. But logs show they’ve been in contact recently, and Waverly is currently en route to Spain. This may finally be our in.”
“Why Spain?”
“That’s what we need to figure out.”
Nicole let that all sink in as she shuffled through the remaining papers in the folder. “Who’s infiltrating?” A dark-blue passport slipped out.
“You.”
“Me?” Nicole opened the booklet to find her likeness staring back at her.
“Yes, you.” Dolls peered at her over the rim of his wire-framed glasses, as if daring her to contradict him. “Or rather, Nicole Scott. You’ll offer your services to Waverly Earp as a hired gun.”
It wasn’t the worst idea she had ever heard. “And if she refuses?”
Dolls shrugged. “Make sure your offer is irresistible.”
Nicole’s lips pursed into a thin line. “Back up?”
“Chetri.”
Nicole fought a frown. Jeremy was terrific for research, but not so great in a firefight. Though, how much trouble could she possibly get into with the bookish Waverly Earp? “And you?”
“Bustillos and I will be tracking Wynonna and Willa Earp in San Juan. See if we can figure out what they’re planning from a different angle.”
Nicole raised an eyebrow. “Puerto Rico? How terrible for you.”
Dolls cracked a rare grin. “It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it.”
Absentmindedly running her left thumb along the base of her bare ring finger, Nicole looked at the picture of Waverly Earp again. It was exactly the type of case she needed right now to keep her mind off the disaster that was her personal life. Shae, of course, would say Nicole was running from her problems yet again. But she no longer had to answer to Shae. Not anymore.
“So when do I leave?”

The first issue of Image Comics’ Moonstruck comes out today, and the fantastical story from writer Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and artist Shae Beagle is a genuine treat full of adorable magical creatures and a moving story about our barista protagonist, a werewolf named Julie who longs for normalcy and love—a sentiment I’m sure many of us are familiar with.
“Fantasy creatures are living typical, unremarkable lives alongside humans, and barista Julie strives to be the most unremarkable of all. Normal job, normal almost-girlfriend, normal … werewolf transformations that happen when she gets upset?” goes the description, “But all bets are off when she and her centaur best friend Chet find themselves in the middle of a magical conspiracy. Will Julie and Chet be able to save their friends? Is Julie’s dogged determination to be normal a lost cause? Who’s going to watch the coffee shop while our heroes are out saving the world?”
In an interview with the Moonstruck team, Beagle explains that the story began as a five-page short story at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and when the two teamed up, they ended up turning it into something more with editor Laurenn McCubbin. Many elements of Moonstruck stuck out to me, from the dynamic and expressive style that immediately draws you into this magical world, to the way it captures a wide range of characters that can sometimes be lacking in mainstream fantasy stories.
An unfortunate tendency within the fantasy and sci-fi genre is to tell stories that are invested in otherness but fail to include those voices in their narrative. We’ve seen so many films and books talk about race, sexuality, or disability in metaphoric ways, but completely push these characters aside when it comes to representation. Moonstruck is a story that incorporates magic and magical creatures without falling into this trap, and it does so with a wide array of representation among its characters.
“When I was thinking about how magic was going to work in the world of Moonstruck, I started thinking about how other kinds of otherness work in the real world, like race and sexuality and ability, how things like that function,” says Ellis, “And those aren’t just window-dressing sorts of things. There’s nobody who’s says, ‘You are black and that doesn’t affect how you interact with the world as all.’ So that’s not how it is for magic in this story. Otherness colors how the world sees and interacts with you so it colors how you see and interact with the world.”
Ellis talks about Julie’s friend Chet as one such example. “Chet is a centaur so that impacts how they see the world. They take up a lot of space physically, so they take up a lot of space emotionally, they’re not afraid to be out there. They’re not afraid to put themselves out there because the way this particular magic affects them physically. Meanwhile there’s Julie who can kind of hide her magic away and she’s able to be ashamed of it in a way that Chet just isn’t.”
McCubbin adds, “There’s people who want to read all kinds of stories and people who want to read stories that feature queer people and women and people of color and have it not be about their queer-ness, woman-ness, and people of color-ness. Julie is Puerto Rican, but the focus isn’t that she’s from Puerto Rico. Julie is gay, but the story isn’t about her coming out—it’s that we want these stories to be like, ‘Hey, it’s people like you having adventures.'”
VIDEO
The topic of representation is also one we see play out in the book as well, with a book series titled the Pleasant Mountain Sisters, a favorite of Julie’s and her love interest’s. It’s a very cool and interesting story-telling device that adds to the ways that Moonstruck is playing with form. Ellis points out “it’s not just a straightforward action-adventure story or a straightforward slice-of-life story … there’s some weird storytelling stuff we did.” In the first arc, pages of the Pleasant Mountain Sisters are drawn by Kate Leth (Hellcats) and will pass on to a different artist for the next arc. She explains:
“The stuff that’s happening in the Pleasant Mountain Sisters pages is reflective of the main story. It’s kind of Julie’s internal monologue. So Julie has been obsessed with these books since she was a kid, her number one goal is to be the writer on Pleasant Mountain Sisters and I’m a big believer in the idea that the media we consume shapes who we are as people. So I was thinking about the kind of media that Julie would have read a lot of as a kid and how that made her who she is—an anxious werewolf who doesn’t want to be a werewolf even though everyone else is fine with it.
Pleasant Mountains Sisters are these uber normal, uber white, and uber, uber human with no magical creatures in them at all and she kind of takes that and really internalized it. I think they play a very important role in Julie’s characterization.”
Don’t we all have a Pleasant Mountain Sisters in our life? Julie’s desire for normalcy, Beagle tells me, “has a lot to do with what is coming up for her, it’s something that she’s going to have to confront in a very direct way.” In the way that we see media’s influence on our Moonstruck characters, the Moonstruck team also hopes that their comic will foster change in our media. Ellis says:
“I hope that it can expand out our idea of who’s allowed to be a protagonist, because a lot of time gay people are in the background or they’re just white gay people. There’s so many different types of people out there but the kinds of people who are allowed to be protagonists in comics is so narrow and that just seems ridiculous.”
This is a book that will definitely bring you lots of joy. Newcomer Beagle’s art is absolutely spell-binding (see what I did there?) matched with Ellis’ equally expressive writing. Additionally, accompanying the story is some delightful back matter that includes a supernatural advice column (ever been curious about the super-specific advice a mermaid would give you?) along with interviews and art from artists like Nilah Magruder, the first African American woman to write for Marvel comics. You can check it out on Image’s site here.
