I love shooting in Ottawa. Ottawa is my town. It's where I plied my trade for almost a decade, interviewing all manner of living prime ministers and somewhat-alive cabinet ministers.

also when i was a kid basically the only tv i watched was the rick mercer report. so honestly it tracks that i would’ve become a tom scott fan
#neither of them are the first to do the ‘go to random places and film it’ genre but. yeah. yeah#i know tom definitelyyyy tries hard to avoid political content which rick. uh. did not. loll#but they did both have a comedy aspect to them aside from the ‘going places’ thing as tom had techdif#funny tho. i watched the mercer report end and now ive seen toms channel end.#tom scott#this is such a canadian ass post. sorry. real ones know rmr! best job in the country!#aww and now im thinking about stuart mclean… i witnessed the end of the vinyl cafe too…..#well. hes not that relevant here but rick mercer and stuart mclean TO ME have similar vibes#i remember someone on the radio saying ‘rick mercer has the best job in the country but i have the second best’ and it mightve been mclean?

I am having thoughts about autism and rebellion. I often describe myself as 'a lazy emo' or 'a lazy punk' in that I have the attitude but none of the energy needed to 'look' the part.
And I do think that's accurate, but it also occurred to me that I didn't necessarily 'rebel' in the most obvious ways.
I found a burned book today and it triggered something of a core memory for me. I don't know how old I was but I was in elementary school. I was walking along the beach in my home town when I found the remains of a burned book.
Being raised in Catholic school I knew that burned books were 'morally bad' in the eyes of some of my elders. So, logically, as a little autistic rebel I decided I should read this book. So I took home a scrap of page that had a partial author name and a partial book name on the other side.
My brother helped me google-foo to figure out what it was - this is how I know I was in elementary school. I started actually using computers in high school and had no clue how to figure out what book this was.
Anyway, brother helped me find it, I then got it out of the library. and... well It wasn't /my/ cup of tea. But I kept doing it. I only remember 3 of the books I read this way, but there was lots.
Prey by Michael Crichton [the first one]
Blood Music by Greg Bear [very interesting and very outside of my normal reading habits]
Rick Mercer's The Book [fun political rants from the Rick Mercer report in written form]
The book I found today was a religious novel by Rhonda McKnight called 'secrets and lies' and... well I can tell from the description that I would not like it, and from the scraps I read today that it would aggravate me to read 60+ chapters of it. But... memory unlocked.
I wonder if this is an autism thing. My rebellions were... quiet.
I read during mass, I read burnt books, I went for long walks at 3am - but didn't drink or meet up with friends... I just walked. My rebellions were not internal but neither were they flashy.

pollivre's calls to defund the cbc are alarming to say the least (esp considering he will almost certainly be prime minister) but also it's making for some very enlightening conversations about cancon. i heard one critic very smartly note that it's ironically the tv shows that are the most unabashed in their depiction of canada (trailer park boys, kim's convenience, sort of) that tend to breach containment and become popular with international audiences, whereas when canadians try to do american shit it flops so hard. i'm currently reading rick mercer's new memoir and it is as annoyingly patriotic as the mercer report but at the same time i gotta respect how he celebrated the rural canadian. he was in 2 different small towns every week making them seem like the funniest most legend places of all time. so i see why the tories are mad at the CBC: since that generation of programming died, it's like the toronto syndication network! you begin to understand why every canadian living outside toronto makes a sport out of loathing it

Rick Mercer Helps Canadians Confirm Their Identity
Whether he’s ranting on CBC’s Rick Mercer Report, entertaining on This Hour Has 22 Minutes or otherwise sharing his informed opinions on politics and contemporary Canadian lifestyle, Rick Mercer is a national treasure. Before retiring from his RMR show, I doubt I missed an episode in the fifteen seasons his show was on the air. Mercer’s newest book The Road Years is an homage to all those years…

Pollievre's pension amount used to be a bit in the Rick Mercer report, what the hell are the Conversatives playing here.
For weeks, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has been accusing NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh of supporting the government until February so he can become eligible for his MP pension. But experts estimate the size of Poilievre's own pension at more than three times that of Singh's pension. A calculation of Poilievre's House of Commons pension indicates that he could draw more than $230,000 annually once he turns 65. That figure could grow considerably if Poilievre becomes prime minister following the next federal election. If Singh qualifies for his pension, he could draw more than $66,000 annually starting at age 65, the same estimates suggest.

Most politicians try to come across as much more fun and down-to-earth than they really are. Harper is the opposite. He goes the other way. One of his speech writers reported that he would often highlight lines he thought were clever or funny. He would then tell the writer to remove them.
