Qué hacer antes de empezar a pintar

Las cosas que haces al comienzo de una pintura determinarán el curso completo de tu trabajo. Se trata de tomar el control de inmediato. Estar Inspirado o estar en medio de la inspiración, no va a ser suficiente, nunca es suficiente. Antes de levantar un pincel, tómate un tiempo para pensar en lo que piensa hacer. Piensa en la pintura como el comienzo de un hermoso viaje. Si se tratara de un viaje real, tal vez un viaje en coche para cruzar el país, querrías tener mapas, tarjetas de crédito, gasolina, tiempo suficiente y un destino. Por supuesto, debes saber conducir; sobre todo, debes tener una ruta. Debes tener motivación para llegar a donde deseas ir. Comenzar una pintura es muy parecido.

I used to belong in our neighborhood book group, but when I started painting, my time for extraneous reading material was minimized. These days, my reading time is relegated to art books it seems. A @taraleaver challenge for #21daysinmyartworld is to share my favorite art books. Of course, the virtual bible to any painter is master impressionist painter @richardschmid ‘s Alla Prima. This is a book you digest one page—one paragraph—at a time, as it is chocked full of information. I was able to find an out-of-print first edition through a used book store, but there’s Alla Prima II and his current release, My Still Life Art. The loose brushwork and light on his subjects is spectacular. Could you imagine taking a workshop from him??!! (Admittedly, I’m a big fan and have a printed IG message from him above my desk. Don’t judge.). Another book that I just started is @jamesgurneyart’s Color and Light. This is more for the realist painter, but I’m liking the art history as well as the fundamentals he covers. I can see this becoming quite a handy reference book for any art student and established painter. He references his prior fantasy book Dinotopia throughout, which I haven’t read, but his knowledge and skill are undeniable and written in a way that’s easy to understand. (He includes a fun personalized door hanger when you buy the book from him directly). Those studies I posted the last couple of days work really well as a series, so here is a collective repost...

I also wanted to share a couple of insights...

Each study took about 1 to 2 hours. They were done over the course of a couple of days. The goal here was to create believable surface detail with custom brushes.

You can find most of the references at wikiart. I was really happy to learn that wikiart had a collection of over 400 Levitan paintings. :D

I created all of the brushes myself and without the use of photo textures. Some of the brush tips were made with alchemy, I strongly recommend checking that program out. It was super interesting to discover new uses for brushes I had lying around since ages.

In the first two studies I used the Color Dynamics brush setting to create the subtle changes of hue and saturation for example in the snow around the river. Also I realised that it really pays off to make as many brushstrokes as possible to create an interesting surface. Keep your arm relaxed to avoid injury!

As these were all done on a single layer it was important to paint in an order that makes sense, for example background before foreground.

Working in a relatively small scale as well as not zooming in for details also speeds things up.
