It’s always been important to me to be surrounded by beauty. Ambiance is important to me - the energy of a space, the look of it. I put a lot of emphasis on small details because to me, they really matter. I’ve been told that’s frivolous, I’ve been called too particular, deemed fussy and you know what, even if that’s all true, it doesn’t matter - I know what brings me joy and I cultivate that because happiness is a choice 🤍 This is a scene snapped in my bedroom a few weeks ago, an accidental pretty moment on my bedside table where I was writing. Words were the first thing I discovered and felt passionate about arranging. I love to read before bedtime, but only certain types of books. I’m particularly fond of short stories, epistolary novels, or brief essays that I can set down when I get sleepy and not worry too much about forgetting the plot. A perfect example is E. M. I used to belong in our neighborhood book group, but when I started painting, my time for extraneous reading material was minimized. These days, my reading time is relegated to art books it seems. A @taraleaver challenge for #21daysinmyartworld is to share my favorite art books. Of course, the virtual bible to any painter is master impressionist painter @richardschmid ‘s Alla Prima. This is a book you digest one page—one paragraph—at a time, as it is chocked full of information. I was able to find an out-of-print first edition through a used book store, but there’s Alla Prima II and his current release, My Still Life Art. The loose brushwork and light on his subjects is spectacular. Could you imagine taking a workshop from him??!! (Admittedly, I’m a big fan and have a printed IG message from him above my desk. Don’t judge.). Another book that I just started is @jamesgurneyart’s Color and Light. This is more for the realist painter, but I’m liking the art history as well as the fundamentals he covers. I can see this becoming quite a handy reference book for any art student and established painter. He references his prior fantasy book Dinotopia throughout, which I haven’t read, but his knowledge and skill are undeniable and written in a way that’s easy to understand. (He includes a fun personalized door hanger when you buy the book from him directly). Das hier habe ich von der wunderbaren Charlotte Lungstrass-Kapfer bekommen, die es vom Original THE THREE CROWNS großartig ins Deutsche übersetzt hat. I have been wanting to read this for a week, not because of ARRIVAL (although I am sure it is a lovely movie, I am just not getting around to going to the cinema these days, still waiting to see MOONLIGHT), but because it features a story on Ancient Babylon, which I have been so interested in since visiting the Louvre's sections on Ancient Mesopotamia approximately a thousand times.                                                                 Mein Buch für den Zug (aber sowieso ein Buch für immer): Schwimmerbecken von Claudia Ulrike Bleier. Kurze Episoden, lose verknüpft, erzählen in wunderbarer Sprache die Geschichte zweier Zwillingsgeschwister. Der Bruder kommt zurück ins Heimatdorf, zu Schwester und Eltern, aber spricht nur noch Indonesisch (vielleicht). Perfekt für die Bahn. Perfekt für den sonnigen Wintertag.                                               The reason why I am not making process with my reading pile is this wonder of a book: Double Nationalité by Nina Yargekov. -- You come to at an airport. You have no recollection of who you are or where you are going. You have in your bag two passports and a set of wet wipes. You wear a glittering diadem and make-up as if you were a stolen car. You are a sensible girl. What do you do? -- As far as I am aware there are no translations into German or English of this book yet, which is a scandal. This is the first book I have read since Irmgard Keun that I feel takes place in the same world that I live in. I have never seen such a relatable protagonist, or such a suspenseful narrative, even though you might say nothing much has happened yet. I have never read a book like this before, and I love it. // Der Grund, warum ich mit meiner Leseliste nicht vorankomme? Dieses Buch von Nina Yargekov, das ein Wunder ist. Soweit ich weiß, gibt es noch keine Übersetzung ins Deutsche oder Englische, was ich kaum fassen kann. Seit Irmgard Keun habe ich kein Buch mehr gelesen, dass so sehr in meiner Lebenswirklichkeit spielt wie dieses.
