Week 7 comparison: similarities and differences: "The Texas Chain Saw massacre by Tobe Hoppers 1974" and "Deep Red by Dario Argento 1975"

Short Essay #1: The Texas Chain Saw massacre by Tobe Hoppers 1974

For week 6 I decided to watch The Texas Chain Saw massacre by Tobe Hoppers 1974. I picked to watch the film because I love horror film, I have never seen it and its a classic American horror slasher all should watch.

The Texas Chain Saw massacre is a 1974 American horror film produced and directed by Tobe Hooper. One big similarities between this film and Deep red is it being a horror film, but with it is its differences is The Texas Chain Saw massacre was an American horror film with the killer using a chain saw and Deep Red being an Italian horror film with its killer using a hatchet. Both films are unique on their own kills, actors, the feelings you get from watching both films, and they both stand out in the horror gene, where I have never seen a film like them.

For The Texas Chain Saw massacre by Tobe Hoppers 1974 many critics would say that Texas Chain Saw massacre is bloody, violent and gruesome, even being banned in many states. From a review post by Roger Ebert he says “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is as violent and gruesome and blood-soaked as the title promises -- a real Grand Guignol of a movie. It’s also without any apparent purpose, unless the creation of disgust and fright is a purpose. And yet in its own way, the movie is some kind of weird, off-the-wall achievement. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to make a movie like this, and yet it’s well-made, well-acted, and all too effective." ( Roger Ebert)

Another fine difference from The Texas Chain Saw massacre and Deep Red is the box office numbers. With The Texas ChainSaw massacre by Tobe Hoppers 1974 having a budget of less than $140,000 but making $30,860,378 million with still having a growth today. With Deep Red it made ₤3,709 billion (Italy) which is $629,903 US dollar and I couldn't find its budget.

During 1974 a major historical event that happened was when US President Richard Nixon stepping down (got impeached) after the Watergate scandal. The Watergate Scandal was a 1972 break in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex that President Nixon tried to cover up, when failed he was later impeached being the first president to happen to.

I wanted to add this clip from Texas Chain Saw because it was an unexpected first kill in the film, with Kirk not even getting a chance to run and just like in Deep Red its first kill was right at the beginning of the film, being unexpected, and both being bloody and gruesome.

Short Essay #2: Deep Red by Dario Argento 1975

For week 7 I picked again another horror film but this one being foreign and has many bloody, violent, and gruesome kills like Texas Chain Saw.

Deep Red (Profondo rosso) more known as The Hatchet Murders, is a 1975 horror film directed by Dario Argento. Deep red is about a psychic medium being murdered ( Macha Meril) with Macha dying her neighbor Marcus Daly a pianist, feels he need to solve the case, being the one to see the murder. The film is filled with strange music at weird parts of the film but is enjoyable to listen to. Unlike The Texas Chain Saw massacre with it award silence scene with little to no music.

An article named Deep Red (1975) written by JPRoscoe says "Argento is one of those directors that makes movies that you remember, and Deep Red is no different. The movie is filled with squeamish moments that sometimes look fake, but also hold a gross realism to them. Deep Red has some grueling and terrifying moments that make it a must for horror movie fanatics." I would agree that both Deep Red and The Texas Chain Saw massacre had wonderful directors that could make you remember their films from their gross, gruesome, and terrifying moments.

Deep Reds movie poster really caught my eye, from the creepy doll hanging and scary body in the back compared to The Texas Chain Saw massacre, being creepy to but doesn't stand out like Deep Red does.

During the time the film Deep Red came out a historical event from 1975 that was happening was The Vietnam War ending on April 30th, 1975, after lasting 8 years, with many killed it finally ended.

Finally for Deep Red I wanted to include this scene that toward the end of the film. When I watched this scene from the film, it was so unexpected. It was creepy and terrifying and I hope no one in life ever has to have this happen to them.

Overall both films stood out to me with weird twists and turns, gruesome kills and scenes. I have never seen anything like them and I hope they both get more recognition. I was very impressed by both films and enjoyed watching both, I would highly recommend them to any film lovers that love horrors and twists. Both films had their differences but were same in a lot of ways. I'm excited to see what others think and I hope they enjoy it as much as I did.

Ace loves hickies, bites, or just generally marking you as his even if the public didn’t know it, “Still doesn’t change the fact that you’re mine.”

You DO get through to him though, scaring him as he “feels weak,” but feels that he can trust you (as he should lol)

Ace says “I love you” first

It caught the both of you off-guard, but made the moment even better as he’d said it from the bottom of his heart

You cried (I would cry) and easily reciprocated with sincerity

He gives you pet names like “Baby doll” “Baby Chambers” “Munchkin” “Doll-face” “Honey (sarcastically most of the time)” and “Queen (occasionally)”

You settle for whatever fits at the moment, and when something new sparks, Ace always flushes a pink tint and smiles goofily while he looks down

You do have some common ones though, “My Man” “Daddy (just to mess with him)” “Blondie” “Gummy Bear” and “King of Castle Rock/King”

The Breakup: “Can’t Live Without You”

Most likely his jealousy

Ace likes to runs his mouth when he’s pissed off and doesn’t watch it when it comes to you

Throws things near you, never at you

Calls you all the names under the sun, but it’s “whore” or names based on cheating on him that hits you harder

Compares how wild you are when with him to you cheating making sense, “I should’ve known, the way you suck was just too good, huh?”

You fire back as well, mentioning his behavior rather than the unjustified claims he spews, knowing you’d never felt any other way than you did with him, completely loyal

By the end of the fights, it either ends in make-up sex or separating yourselves for a few hours

Ace isn’t one for apologies, but he does show you kindness and a softer side when he’s given the chance

Scolds himself when he hears you cry about something he said in the spur of the moment

The fights don’t ever end in breaking up, you can’t live without each other

That is, until you feel enough is enough

It’s hard, but you pack your stuff when he’s out with the boys, avoiding you

You don’t give him the say, he’s said enough

But, you do at least leave a note of your departure, going back home to Chris and Eyeball

They take you in with open arms, Eyeball somewhat being understanding and sympathetic when you go through your depression period

Constantly wondered if what had happened was your fault, if something could’ve changed the way you went out

Chris made jokes, “You know...I never really liked him anyways.”

You feel as if this is the end for you, but you’re better than that

After: “Love Lost, Lessons Learned”

You still see each other all the time, making moving on harder than you originally thought

Every place arises at least one good memory with Ace: the diner, the park, the long dirt roads, mailboxes, shiny new cars waiting to be driven, even toothpicks

You do, however, find the closer you were missing

You move on, you forgive him, you become you again

Or, a new you, as Ace had never deteriorated the person you were, he helped build an even stronger woman (he’s not manipulative/abusive!)

You catch each other staring sometimes, talk too

A friendship was rebuilt, the man you’d known was always still there

And, who knows, maybe a break was all you needed, and a story is still left unfinished?

All About Eve (1950); AFI #28

Our current film is one of the most famous dramas in American Movie history, All About Eve (1950). It is a portrayal of a star struck fan who is taken under the wing of a famous actress and is a metaphor for the new stars of Hollywood replacing the previous generation of film veterans. This film is tied for the most nominations ever with 14 in 12 categories (out of 16 categories offered) and 6 of those were winners. Strangely, all of the main actresses were nominated for best actress or supporting actress (Bette Davis and Ann Baxter for Best Actress; Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter for Best Supporting Actress) but none of them took home the prize. The film did win Best Picture, Best Director, and Best screenplay and was the all around winner at the 1951 Oscars. In fact, the film won 14 awards in 1951 out of 28 nominations. This film has many dramatic twists and I don’t want to spoil the whole thing so I will just go over the basic outline, but I still will say:

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Margo Channing (Bette Davis) is a famous stage actress who has a stalker that goes in and sees every one of her performances. This stalker turns out to be just a huge fan that idolizes Margo and this person goes by the name Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). The wife of the man who wrote the play, Karen Richards (Celeste Holm) sees Eve outside the theatre after a performance and asks her to come in and meet the great Margo Channing. She gets a chance to meet Margo as well as Karen’s husband Lloyd Richards (Hugh Marlowe) and Margo’s boyfriend Bill Sampson (Gary Merill) who is also a famous director. Eve also runs into the personal assistant of Margo, named Birdie (Thelma Ritter). 

Eve manipulates all of the characters against each other and attempts to seduce Bill until it becomes apparent that she is trying to replace Margo. Eve weasels her way into Margo’s part by acting as her understudy and taking over for her. However, there is a theatre critic named Addison DeWitt (George Sanders) who has learned of Eve’s plan and true identity. He states that he now owns her since he knows her secrets.

A year later after her entrapment by DeWitt, Eve is given a prestigious reward and, during her ceremony, thanks all of the people that she screwed over to get the part. She skips her own after party so that she doesn’t have to face these people. Eve instead goes home and finds a young girl waiting in her room that seems to have the same ambition of taking over the place of Eve that Eve had with Margo. The movie ends showing the new girl pretending to be Eve and trying on her coat in the mirror.

Bette Davis was known for being difficult to work with and was perfect to play this part of an imbittered old school movie star. In fact, both she and Celeste Holm really hated each other and did not work well on set. According to IMDB, they only spoke once when not shooting as Bette Davis swore at Celeste for having manners. Good manners. Apparently Bette Davis was not really known for being polite.

There is some LGBT turns in this film as there are a lot of women who are infatuated with other women. Even more along these lines, the character of Addison DeWitt does not seem to ever have any companion, male or female, and turns down Eve because he doesn’t fall prey to women like her. It has been inferred that his character is gay but I don’t think that this is ever stated outright. If he was intended to be a gay character, he would be one of the first ever written for the big screen.

I don’t generally put a lot of emphasis on my introverted nature when it comes to reviewing movies, but this one really rubs me the wrong way. I don’t like people who are fake in an attempt to try and get something from others. I don’t like people who will do anything to get into the spotlight. I don’t like people who are constantly in search of the adoration and approval of others. There can be no disrespect to the actors because they all are people that I hate and for that I must admit that they played their parts well. 

So should this movie be on the AFI List? Absolutely. It is well acted, the story is great, the movie has had a profound impact on American film, and the influence has been prevalent through American media in general. Would I recommend it? Not personally. I am not a big fan of this film, but I think that it is all personal taste. If you like a good drama, then this is a perfect movie for you. All the actresses are just dripping with venom and deceit throughout the story. The film still has the record for most actresses nominated for Academy Awards from a single movie. Because of all the drama both behind and in front of the camera, this film is known as the “bitchiest” film of all time and I agree. If that appeals to you, then you will likely really love this movie. It is just not for me.
