THE LOOP
Serving as a mini-love letter to 80s Horror, THE LOOP is straight forward, fun, and feels like something crafted just for a scary movie night. Tossing in pieces of Freddy Kreuger, Jason, Pinhead, and many more known horror elements into a movie blender, filmmaker Rich Ragsdale centers his story around that mysterious VHS tape and the evil it may or may not contain!

The 10's somehow changed many veteran musicians thanks to the flurry of the work most of them did during that time as you can notice in our discussions. I mean, some have returned then. To give you an example – Kansas finally released their next album after a lengthy hiatus and nothing seems to have changed. Mind you, this is not a criticism, this is more of an observation, i.e. a lot of musicians tends to solidify after a certain period and they stay there. Is that a bad thing? Depends, but I believe you can still locate some intricacies they could've struggled to reach in their past. Sure, they cannot achieve their heights of their heyday – very few can do that at their stage of their career –, yet they still care.

THE LONG NIGHT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Well Go USA Entertainment
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  New York transplant Grace goes in search of the parents she’s never known and a promising lead takes her to a southern plantation, the alleged stomping grounds of her childhood. Accompanied by her boyfriend they attempt to investigate her family’s whereabouts. Their arrival is plagued by bizarre events and the couple’s weekend takes a terrifying turn as a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader terrorize the pair on route to fulfilling a twisted ancient apocalyptic prophecy.
REVIEW: As Dr. Zaius warned Taylor in “The Planet of the Apes, “Don't look for it Taylor, you may not like what you find,” Grace goes in search of her biological parents with disastrous results.
Robert Sheppe and Mark Young’s screenplay places contemporary within a traditional tale that is set against the backdrop of a Southern plantation. Once the couple arrive the action is limited to the interior of the house and a small area of the surrounding grounds. The plot, I feel, misses some opportunities to engage the viewer as it lacks some details about the cult and the spirit trapped there. It all seems superficial as there is nothing to hook the viewer in terms of character development. There are moments when the dialogue seems uninspired or annoying. The secondary characters simply seem to be there to have a body count. The plot lacks any real gravitas so that at its best it felt like an R.L. Stein “Goosebumps” story. It’s not bad, it’s just that I can take out movies from the adult section now.
The location, costume designs and production values are solid. Rich Ragsdale does a fine job of setting up shots and, at times, capturing interesting performances. The film has a nice pace, but I found it lacking any tension or suspense. The cinematography was nice, crisp, and didn’t create any atmosphere, which the film needed. The special effects are suitable for the narrative and felt a bit reserved for this veteran genre fan.
Genre fans will recognize actress Scout Taylor-Comptonis from her role as Laurie Strode in the Rob Zombie “Halloween” films. Since then she’s added quite a few acting credits to her resume in both film and television projects. Her performance here doesn't gel, and that might be a result of what isn’t on the page and/or direction. It feels hollow-hearted and at times forced. There is a scene where she performs this physical transformation, but that could have been her or a stunt double. Whoever it was, nice job. Nolan Gerard Funk’s performance was annoying, again either the writing or direction, and the character could not die soon enough for me. Clearly Deborah Kara Unger and Jeff Fahey are in the film for their name recognition. They do a solid job working with the limitations of the material and were part of my interest in seeing the film through.
Understandably, THE LONG NIGHT is a flawed film. It feels like a horror film for a horror film’s sake. The narrative lacks anything new or different to elevate the concept. I was engaged because I was interested in seeing some of the actors and curious to how the story played out. In the end I found the film lacking any real “ooos” or “ahs,” and low on energy. For the veteran horror fan let me again turn to the words of the sage Dr. Zaius, “Don't look for it Taylor, you may not like what you find.”

Ha, should've done this a long time ago! 😆 Here's some pictures I took of Kansas when I saw them in December. They aren't the best quality images ever, but they're what I got. It was probably my favorite concert I've seen so far! They played some stuff from their new album, various songs from 12 different albums (Icarus, Song for America, Lonely Wind, and Miracles out of Nowhere were some of my favorites), and the entire Point of Know Return album (my favorite one).
