Black Pumas - Chronicles of a Diamond - new album from Adrian Quesada's psychedelic soul project with Eric Burton
When Black Pumas made their self-titled debut in 2019, the Austin-bred duo set off a reaction almost as combustible and rapturous as their music itself. Along with earning a career total of seven Grammy Award nominations (including Album Of The Year) and winning praise from leading outlets like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, singer/songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada achieved massive success as a live act, touring large theaters all over Europe and North and South America and delivering a transcendent show Burton aptly refers to as “electric church.” As they set to work on their highly awaited sophomore album, the band broadened their palette to include a dazzling expanse of musical forms: heavenly hybrids of soul and symphonic pop, mind-bending excursions into jazz-funk and psychedelia, starry-eyed love songs that feel dropped down from the cosmos. Wilder and weirder and more extravagantly composed than its predecessor, Chronicles of a Diamond arrives as the fullest expression yet of Black Pumas’ frenetic creativity and limitless vision.

1/20/24.
Friko is yet another young indie band out of Chicago. Horsegirl, Lifeguard, Kara Jackson, Sharp Pins. And here comes Friko with their full length debut LP, "Where we've been, Where we go from here".
Austin Town Hall stated that they had a hard time pigeonholing the band. Agreed. Bands from Black Country, New Road to The Lemon Twigs to The Strokes, to some of the above mentioned Chicago bands can all be heard.
This is being released by ATO Records (New York)

Margaret Glaspy - Get Back (from Echo The Diamond) Have you checked out the new Margaret Glaspy album? Love this track. Her voice reminds me of Jessica Dobson from Deep Sea Diver a bit. Dig it!

After a busy weekend covering The New Colossus Festival‘s fourth edition, I wound up catching a real nasty cold that has kicked my ass: I’ve felt miserable for the past four days or so. And unfortunately, because we live together, my mother caught what I had. So it sounds a bit like a sick ward here. But somehow, the show must go on, as best as it could. right? [Album] Black Pumas veröffentlichen Live-Album im November!
Tumblr media

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Niko Kapetan AKA one-half of the band Friko. Originally from Evanston, IL, Niko had been writing songs since he was a teenager and formed Friko with his bandmate Bailey Minzenberger in 2019. After self-releasing a number of singles and EPs, the band signed with ATO Records, and in mid-February, ATO released their debut album Where We've Been, Where We Go from Here, and it's a delight!

Friko Live Preview: 3/1, Metro, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Chicago's Hallogallo collective is remarkably sonically diverse: There's the sneaky art rock of Horsegirl, the chaotic noise of Lifeguard, and, playing tomorrow night at Metro, the communal, orchestral indie rock of Friko. The duo of vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger have more in common with the earnest likes of Los Campesinos! and Black Country, New Road than with Pylon, Gang of Four, This Heat, or other bands generally lumped in as inspiration for the crop of young post-punk bands to come out of the Windy City and London. Friko's fine-tuned debut LP, Where we've been, Where we go from here (ATO), is as reflective and all-encompassing as the title suggests. On the album, they find fulfillment and solidarity through connection in a world that tries to prevent you from flourishing at every turn.
Where we've been is, in and of itself, a mish mosh of genres, sounds and arrangements inspired as much by Chopin as rock and roll. The opening sort-of title track and pseudo band theme song juxtaposes orchestral swells and circular guitars with group vocals, building up to the all-out desperation of punk as they sing innumerably bleak lines like, "Four feet between a wall and a window make your wife a widow" as if they're life-affirming mantras. On the anthemic "Crimson To Chrome", Kapetan sings, "I'm sitting here writing the same sad song / With the cogs on fire / Spinning on and on / Till I'm old and tired / Even then, I'm on fire," the final line recalling in spirit the Bruce Springsteen song of the same name. Friko might be generations apart from The Boss, but both have the ability to make anguish sound massive.
What's most impressive about Friko, though, is that they know when to pull back. "For Ella", "Until I'm With You Again", and closer "Cardinal" are on the softer side, the first two of them piano ballads. "For Ella", in particular--which features Macie Stewart on violin and Alejandro Quiles on cello--has some of Kapetan's strongest songwriting. Wistful and melancholic, it was inspired by a visit to a graveyard in Wisconsin, and you can imagine Kapetan looking at a marked grave and imagining the current lives of loved ones and the past lives of the folks who now lie beneath. "You were running through the backyard / Said the puddles were the ocean / Now the smell of rainy days always remind me of you," he sings. "Statues", meanwhile, is a slice of moody indie rock, alternating between cleanliness and distortion, as Kapetan again imagines a world long after he's gone: "Someday we'll lay statues of our own / For now, we'll bow to memories made of stone." Pretty wise for a band just getting started.
Opening for Friko at Metro are two more bands from Chicago: synth rock dreamers Smut and alternative indie rockers Neptune's Core. Tickets still available at time of publication. Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8.

Live Review: CIVIC at The Castle Hotel in Manchester 25 May 2023
Words: Andy Hughes There’s a lot to be said for being at the gig within half hour of scranning your tea. Due to being a touch on the back foot on Thursday evening, one minute I was at home eating lasagne, the next I was at the punk show with the Australians who’d travelled however many thousands of miles… The joy of living local(ish) in Manchester! With a belly full of Italian stodge, I burst…

"A voice identification system used by the Australian government for millions of people has a serious security flaw, a Guardian Australia investigation has found.
Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) both give people the option of using a “voiceprint”, along with other information, to verify their identity over the phone, allowing them to then access sensitive information from their accounts.
But following reports that an AI-generated voice trained to sound like a specific person could be used to access phone-banking services overseas, Guardian Australia has confirmed that the voiceprint system can also be fooled by an AI-generated voice.
Using just four minutes of audio, a Guardian Australia journalist was able to generate a clone of their own voice and was then able to use this, combined with their customer reference number, to gain access to their own Centrelink self-service account.
The voiceprint service, described as the “digital representation of the sound, rhythm, physical characteristics and patterns of your voice”, was used by 3.8 million Centrelink clients as of the end of February, and more than 7.1 million people had verified their voice with the ATO.
Services Australia, the department that oversees Centrelink, says on its website the service is “secure, accurate and reliable”."
"Voice cloning, a relatively new technology using machine learning, is offered by a number of apps and websites either free or for a small fee, and a voice model can be created with only a handful of recordings of a person.
While the voice generated is better with high-quality recordings, anyone with public recordings of themselves on social media, or who has been recorded elsewhere, could be vulnerable to having their voice reproduced."

New Video: Aussie Punks CIVIC Share a Furious Ripper
New Video: Aussie Punks CIVIC Share a Furious Ripper @charmschoolm @atorecords
Hailed by Stereogum as “an unholy lo-fi pile-up of garage rock, punk and 90s-style noise rock,” Melbourne-based punks CIVIC — Jim McCullough (vocals) – Lewis Hodgson (guitar) – Roland Hlavka (bass) – Jackson Harry (guitar) – Matt Blach (drums) — have developed a reputation for reimagining the reckless intensity of proto-punk for an era of unending and unceasing uncertainty. Earlier this year,…
