The 10's somehow changed many veteran musicians thanks to the flurry of the work most of them did during that time as you can notice in our discussions. I mean, some have returned then. To give you an example – Kansas finally released their next album after a lengthy hiatus and nothing seems to have changed. Mind you, this is not a criticism, this is more of an observation, i.e. a lot of musicians tends to solidify after a certain period and they stay there. Is that a bad thing? Depends, but I believe you can still locate some intricacies they could've struggled to reach in their past. Sure, they cannot achieve their heights of their heyday – very few can do that at their stage of their career –, yet they still care.

Ok here is another unbelievable Motley Rock Story. (not in the book)  I grew up on Kenosha St. in Clairemont. I was the oldest kid on the block in 1962 ish so I was the leader. I organized the days activities from us kids building skateboards out of shoe skates and 2x4's   and flying down the hill ( see video) to making teams for playing baseball in the street. Ralph Kiner the baseball great and E.C. Williams the director of the FBI lived across the street . Their kids were my street crew. Problem was Mr. Williams daughter Charla was my age , becoming a woman , tall as me, and could really hit a baseball and skateboard like a guy. We had a secret crush on each other but I was only 12 so that was just pre mature. She begged me to let her play baseball but I told her "baseball is a guys sport. Girls don't play baseball". But I wanted her to like me so I said ,"Put you hair in a baseball cap so you look like a guy and we will call you George." She complied and we became best friends. She was know as George till the day she died a few years ago. Well long story short. (I'll have to do this in 2 parts) I moved away from Clairemont when I was 15 and George and I lost track of each other.  50 years later she finds me on facebook and says she is lonely, just got divorced again and is moving back to San Diego from Texas and we should get together. For a few months Kim and I had her over for diner a few times and had a great time sharing growing up stories. Her son Mike Grace was now director of entertainment with the Padres so she got us tickets to games and I was blown way Mike and I had worked together with the Pads and I never knew he was her son. Then she just up and passed away one day. I had given her a copy of my book and autographed it to her.
2019 I was preparing to go on a rock and roll cruise "Cruise to the Edge" by the band Yes. Just so happens 4 of my favorite drummers ( Mike Portnoy/Dream Theatre, Alan White/ Yes, Phil Ehart/ Kansas, and Pierre Vanderlinden/ Focus) were going to be performing on the cruise. I wanted to meet them and give them a copy of the "crazy flying drummers" book. Problem was I only had 2 extra books. I go on ebay to find a couple used cheap to give away and purchase 2 more. When they arrived in the mail one was George's autographed copy. I was in tears. Obviously George's personal items wound up on Ebay after she died. What are the odds George would get that book back to me after she died. Twilight Zone stuff. Needless to say I did not give it away. Pierre did not get a copy. But part 2 is even more un believable. stay tuned. Jack Valentine, Class of 1968

Ha, should've done this a long time ago! 😆 Here's some pictures I took of Kansas when I saw them in December. They aren't the best quality images ever, but they're what I got. It was probably my favorite concert I've seen so far! They played some stuff from their new album, various songs from 12 different albums (Icarus, Song for America, Lonely Wind, and Miracles out of Nowhere were some of my favorites), and the entire Point of Know Return album (my favorite one).

The Song of the Day is: Kansas – “Carry On Wayward Son” From the album Leftoverture (1976) Once I rose above the noise and confusion Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion I was soaring ever higher But I flew too high Though my eyes could see, I still was a blind man Though my mind could think, I still was a mad man I hear the voices when I’m dreaming I can hear them say Carry on, my…
