...wait a minute, this was a minor miracle.

I just woke up from sleeping more than 8 hours straight for the first time in literally months (and I need about 9 hours of solid sleep to actually feel rested).

I woke up and was like "I could PROBABLY sleep more... but what I REALLY want to do is read the last chapter of DDD!" Because I talked about it yesterday. (Watched Edge of Sleep with some friends and a line was practically STRAIGHT out of that chapter. X) It's good by the way! Many tw's apply but It's Good.)

Anyways, I started reading it. And I didn't just read it. I EDITED it too! Holy Shit! This is the first time in like two months I've TOUCHED that chapter! (And even then I was just adding little notes I'd made previously into the actual story file.)

But no, this time I actually made some Editorial Decisions and re-worded some things and actually Wrote In details I'd wanted to add before but couldn't put words to yet.

Guys It's So Close To Being Done I Can TASTE it. Mostly I just need to edit like FIVE more sentences and write out the scene where Raven helps Dove start actually rebuilding the mindscape. It's So Freaking Close!

Tbh my greatest achievement was getting @concuss1on and another one of my irl friends (idk if shes chill with me putting her name up) to agree to cosplay the main utrh characters with me.

Maddi (@/concuss1on) is gonna be batman (possibly a shitty costume from a store), im gonna be red hood bc ive started brainstorming a cosplay for him anyway, and the other one is gonna be the joker (bc she hits me a lot and im gonna give her a crowbar prop lmao)

casually wondering if my bug-up-the-butt about DDD wasn't actually partly inspired by having listened to Underland by Delain no less than three times in the past week...

That song is SUCH a DDD song. Especially after about chapter 12. So like, the entire last half or two-thirds of the story? "Don't fall into madness. Don't follow the black rabbit. Don't go down that hole now, nothing can erase the fallout... You can rage, you can fight, storm the gates of hell. By your anger you'll be swallowed! Lose yourself in the fray of a red-lit haze, and awaken shame and sorrow."

It's just ALL Dove's struggle against her demon side and the repercussions every time she loses. The guilt and "shame and sorrow", the struggle for it to not happen again... Even the red imagery! GAH It's PERFECT for DDD!

Fourth Bottle of Mikes: Alma Mine

LAST TIME ON "TEZ SALTBLOGS RH:PC": The writers decided to punish all of my snarky comments about scenes that had exactly three (3) words changed by rewriting nearly all of Bram and Hertz's dialogue to have as little personality as possible.

I also learned that Stocke's reaction to Nemesia's introduction was the shockingly in-character one of "refuse to admit anything until she gives up and leaves." Wow, that new content was shorter than I was expecting! :::DDD

After I stopped last time, I had a thought, which I decided to test before I got on with AH with my newfound ability to blow stuff up: with the ability to see unavailable character status in the menu, I can quickly check if they changed something that really needed changed.

Probably the single most obvious balance problem to a casual player of original!RH is that characters who aren't available to put in your party don't get XP. This means that any character who's primarily available in one timeline only is going to constantly fall behind in level. Rosch is hit worst for most of the game and is the one we all make jokes about, but Eruca is hurt severely by being gone for the entire last three dungeons before the final boss, and Gafka takes a pretty bad hit after you finish SH too. This would be pretty easy to fix for someone with access to the game's code; even just making them get something like 25% of what someone in the active party would get would take a lot of the sting out of it.

So, I checked Rosch's XP to next level, fought a random monster, and checked it again.

Guess what they didn't implement.

...And oh, look, I just noticed they also removed the XP bonus characters lower than the highest-level character in your party get. I can't rule out the possibility yet that they did something else instead to compensate for the original's nonsensical XP curve (you don't even realize how borked vanilla RH's balance is in places until you see some of these numbers graphed, believe me), but given they're selling a "free XP" DLC too, I can't help a certain amount of skepticism.

I finished the "dude who needs some coffee Anti-Sleeps" sidequest before I could see the unfixed typo that I spotted in the script dump before, so incrementing Oops might be cheating, but I'm going to do it anyway.

The sound effects when you hit the skip button aren't quite annoying enough to get a ping, but there are nodes you go back to repeatedly where you'll be hearing it a good four times in a row, so I kind of wish they hadn't added it.

Oh well, at least it tells you the skip button exists in-game now.

Original: "Let's go over the details of the mission one more time." PC: "Let's go over the details of the mission once more." New rule: Now I'm drinking when it pisses me off and when I'm not pissed off, just completely baffled why they bothered.

SWEET LEAPING HELL SPIDERS WHO OKAYED THESE GOBLIN NOISES. Not only is it horrible screeching, it sounds like it was recorded on a potato. It's genuinely hurting my ears, and making me dread the number of goblins I'm going to end up fighting over the course of the game.

Original: "Yikes... is the ceiling caving in?" PC: "Shit... is there a cave-in somewhere?" So Rosch gets to use high-register swears, but Stocke gets "What a pain in the ass" changed to "Sounds problematic"? Like, not that Rosch swearing isn't in-character, but this is evidence that they weren't removing swearing to try to fly under a certain rating.

The barrel/box movement sound effects may be very annoying, but not having to constantly readjust your position because you can only move them in straight lines is a godsend in here.

Nobody but Stocke noticing the rumbling before the roof collapses was a lot more plausible when the sound effect wasn't really loud.

Aaand Stocke's VA oversells "Damn. It's a cave-in.", a.k.a. the line where literally the next sentence is "HOW CAN YOU BE SO CALM?!" Broken record on this, but once again, I love how he voices Stocke when he gets emotional, but really wish he got across how much of a contrast those are to his baseline behavior.

Original: "Yeah... You have to figure any plan simple enough for me to come up with, they thought of first." PC: "Yeah... If I came up with the plan that easily, they had to have thought of it first." I like the self-deprecation in the original line better, but meh, personal taste, and I don't have any idea which is more accurate to the Japanese.

Sip++x3 for more pointless quibbles with the phrasing...

"Let's go back to Alistel." Original: "Oh, uh…" PC: "Oh, yeah." Ah, finally, a change that actually changes something. Badly. Because the entire point of this exchange is that Raynie and Marco are going to take their time going back because Raynie is having a bad PTSD time and needs some time to recover, so her agreeing and Marco immediately contradicting it makes no sense.

Original: "Prob'ly. I was pretty surprised to see a whole brigade of new recruits, though. I nearly froze up because I had no idea how it would turn out." PC: "Prolly. I was surprised the other guys were so green, though. That's why I froze up. I had no clue how it was gonna turn out." What is this translator's beef with turning "Prob'ly" into the less-natural "Prolly" in all of Raynie's dialogue? And "I nearly froze up" is much more in line with Raynie's tendency to minimize her problems, as is discussed immediately after this, than admitting she froze is.

Original: "You don't like being in places like this, do you? The mercenary troop was wiped out at a mine, too…" PC: "It's because of where we are... The Alma Mine. After everything that happened here, I can't say I blame you." .....*extended sigh*. PC, this is a stupid retcon, and you should feel bad. I don't know whether this is the fault of the Japanese or the American team, but even if it's JP, some fault would still lie with the US localizers, because none of Raynie and Marco's dialogue up to this point has been changed. So, with that in mind, let me count the ways it is dumb:

Worldbuilding. Making the world feel too small is always an easy and dangerous pitfall in this sort of game; tying everything to locations the player can go and never referencing anything they don't directly see can quickly become immersion-breakingly artificial.

Grammar. Raynie's lines "(A mine, huh...)" and "I guess I never thought I'd be in a place like this again..." are unchanged and do not imply she's familiar with this mine in particular, just other ones.

Basic logic. How is Alma Mine even still open and functioning after a collapse that large? When I was in elementary school, part of the playground collapsed into a (shallow) sinkhole because it was over an abandoned coal mine and the roof caved. They wouldn't let anyone into the area for years afterward, and that was on top of a mine collapse, not underground right next to it.

Tactics. You're telling me that both sides PLANNED to bring explosives into this mine when it had already collapsed once, completely annihilating what was, by PC's own description, a large military force? That's borderline suicidal.

Raynie and Marco's decisions. Neither of them acts any more concerned about going into the mine than they did in the original version: Raynie's nervous but doesn't tell anyone why, while Marco just seems concerned about Raynie. This does not make sense if they know firsthand that this mine is a deathtrap where an entire military force can die because of one unlucky strike in the right place. Especially once the first rumble happens, one or both of them would warn Stocke and Rosch about what happened to avoid a repeat.

Marco's characterization. There are few things Marco loves more than expositing (I can relate >_>), yet he never volunteers any information about the mine despite appearing to be a lot less messed up about the whole event than Raynie, and Kiel has to explain the mine layout to the group instead?

Raynie's characterization. You're seriously telling me Raynie would be that gung-ho about trying to meet the agent at Alma in SH if that's the site of something she's obviously still carrying around a lot of trauma from?

In short, this retcon is bad and Atlus should feel bad, thanks for coming to my TED talk.
