on Aliexpress ive found that searching for anything rainbow high related usually brings up parts anyway. i suggest having the guide i linked handy for help finding the eyes you want because they probably won't be labeled by who they were made for

did a round of eye swaps this weekend! it’s the most ive done all at once, and i gotta say, i do not recommend it. by the time i got new eyes in these four, my hands were begging me to stop, so poor Priscilla sat eyeless for a while. but I’m really happy with the results!

let me walk you through the process a bit.

i used this guide to help decide which eyes i wanted to use.

this all started because i wanted Daria’s eyes for Zooey.

Daria’s eyes don’t match her color scheme at all, and this has always bothered me about her. they stand out too much, and its jarring. but that minty blue and pale pink are Zooey’s colors exactly, it would complete her alien vibe perfectly.

but, unfortunately, Zooey and Daria have different eye chips. Daria has the Twins eye chip, which has four pegs to keep it in place in the socket, and Zooey has the newer B2 chip, which has only two prongs. i was worried that Daria’s eyes wouldnt fit in Zooey’s head, so i prepared a backup donor: Simone.

Simone has the CNY eye chip, first introduced in Lily Cheng, the Special Edition doll for the Chinese New Year in 2022. this eye mold is more similar to the B2 eyes since it also has only two prongs, so if Daria’s eyes didnt sit right in Zooey, these might be a better fit. the colors arent as perfect, but it could work.

except that Darias eyes fit Zooey perfectly. she looks so cute! now her eyebrows are even more out of place, but I’ll get to that later.

i had already taken out Simone’s eyes to compare the two, so she was given Zooey’s eyes.

i was blown away by how incredible she looks! so soft and sweet. i was fond of her before, but she’s crawled up into my top ten faves with this one alteration.

now, i was going to give those eyes to Daria, but they obviously belong to Simone now. Daria still needs brown eyes though, so i brought out a more fitting donor for her: Priscilla. she has the same color eyes as Zooey, but in the Twins eye chip.

now, i wasn’t intending to bring Minnie into this, but her eyes are a bit unusually dark, and i had Simone’s eyes sitting there.. and well. i already had the hair dryer out.

honestly? a serve. she has B2 eyes originally, like Zooey, so the lashes are Just under her eyelid but they still fit her sculpt pretty well.

at this point, my hands were aching, and i had worn a blister into my thumb, so i had to take a break. Pris was going into the stock box anyway, so there was no pressure to finish her, but the next day i came back and gave her Minnie’s eyes for safekeeping.

Not to be a big fat nerd but I’ve been thinking so much about Johanna’s relationship to a body she doesn’t understand growing up. Her medical records say her blood is O-, but that’s because it has none of the usual membrane proteins that would allow it to be classified into the ABO or the Rh systems; her ears are pointier than any other kid in her class’s, but that’s gotta be genetic, right? Like those genes that make it so the lobe is stuck or loose? But she can’t know, her auntie is the only family she has and she insists she doesn’t feel comfortable showing her ears, for some reason. Many of her classmates say they’re allergic to polen, but she doesn’t get it! How come, she only feels awesome when she’s in nature. She does feel her throat tighten sometimes, though, and her skin break out in rashes. But that’s only ever when she eats red meat (and beans, too, but only if she drinks orange juice along with it. It never made a lot of sense to her) or touched something with rust in it. She feels the most alert at dawn and dusk; thats kind of odd, most people her age feel groggy at school in the early mornings. But everyone has different circadian rhythms, she supposes.

She grows up, and gets pregnant; her obgyn is worried, her body is giving signs of rejecting the fetus, it’s producing antibodies against it. Johanna is horrified. Her aunt only chuckles and says her mother had something similar, she gives Johanna a homemade herbal tea and an amulet and all the symptoms disappear. The problem goes undiagnosed. They test the child’s blood,right after the c section (the pregnancy had been too freaky, the gynecologist didn’t want to risk a normal birth). Her results came back O- as well, but how is this possible? The father is an AB+, after all. Doesn’t matter. It’s not the doctor’s business if she’s cheating — but it is their business if the baby’s blood test was mistaken and the Rh- mother came into contact with Rh+ blood. That’s what they say when they connect a bag of anti Rh+ antibodies to her IV access. Better to be safe than to risk fetal erythroblastosis next time she has a kid. They explain this to her, and it makes no sense — she isn’t cheating. But the doctors don’t seem to be willing to listen to her, just like they aren’t willing to believe that blue hair runs in the family. They call the hospital’s social worker to talk to her; maybe she’s drunk, maybe there’s a reason she lies so much. She walks away from that hospital angry and frustrated.

Her daughter doesn’t have her pointy ears. But the allergy to iron, she seems to have inherited. She just hid it better, behind the explanation of a vegan diet. Neither of them ever suffered from the low blood iron. No blood test ever says her daughter is Rh positive, but she knows Anders’ was, she knows it. Is that even possible? She looks it up, finds out it is, actually, if he was a heterozygous positive. But nothing justifies her being O, it should have been A or B. Has Johanna done that herself? Single-handedly bent the actual rules of genetics and made it so it’d be harder for her daughter to get blood, should she ever need it? Sounds unlikely, but it’s not, really, right? Many people have O- blood. And autoimmune conditions. And allergy to iron. It’s normal. It’s all normal. She isn’t special. She’s not in danger. But isn’t there something you’re forgetting? I’ve been thinking about omega Dick + omega Jason where they had a more mentor/mentee relationship with Dick thinking of Jay as his pup almost (mean while Jay had a big fat crush on his mom figure) and then when Jay comes back from the dead hot Dick is all like damn

Anything that features Dick having an 'oh damn' moment towards Jason is so good, hahaha. Unfortunately I've got a bit of an aversion towards the omega Dick trope though, so sorry. orz If you don't mind alpha!Dick though I've written a few thoughts below!

And a lot of it doesn’t come natural, but the important parts do. It isn’t only omegas who can be tender with their care; it isn’t only alphas who are fierce in their protectiveness

Dick’s independence overshadows traditional dynamics; he’ll provide as needed to ensure Jason feels safe

Alpha!Dick + Pup!Jason

No thoughts just softness. With Dick humoring a rambunctious pup, letting Jason roughhouse with him - pulling at his hair and clothes and having so much patience with him. Just taking all that playfulness until he’s tired and then he squishes Jason beneath him until the pup falls asleep.

Jason having a penchant for nipping! Bites all along Dick’s hands and arms and shoulders because that’s how pups and omegas show affection. And Dick is so fond of them. He’ll roll up his sleeves just so he can see them and show them off because his pup adores him.

But also Dick teaching Jason everything he can. Jason thrives when he feels safe, so Dick makes sure Jason can look after himself regardless if Dick or Bruce are with him or not.

Dick making sure Jason will be independent regardless of how he presents. Jason has so much fight and compassion in him; don't lose that to some designation. Because alphas can be soft and omegas don't have to wait around for some alpha to sweep them off their feet.

Having Jason in their lives would have tempered Bruce and Dick's aggression towards one another (with Dick challenging Bruce), but once Jason is gone Dick is all gnashing teeth and snapping maw and it's ugly

What were growing pains before and Dick learning his place in the pack becomes almost a severance of that bond because Dick loses trust in Bruce as an alpha completely

Tim enters the picture at some point. Dick also beats Joker and has that kill taken from him which leads to more fights, of course.

Because Bruce tells Dick, 'you don't have the right,' and Dick loses it because 'what right did you have!?' -- to leave Jason, to let him die, to choose being a hero over being the alpha Jason needed

And it's not fair, but neither is life and life has broken Dick so thoroughly. That was his pup --

The only reason Dick comes back/stays is for Tim. Doesn't matter that Tim presents as an alpha; he's still a child, a pup.

Extra: where Dick realizes that Jason never even presented; too young, still stunted. Seeing a photo maybe and remembering that Jason was small. Sitting on the fringes of a small nest and seeing some of his own things and breaking down a bit because he misses his pup; he never got to see him grow - he never will.

Extra extra: Dick falling asleep with his head rested along that small nest and waking up to Jason's scent and being !! until he remembers and then it's sad hours once again as Dick lays there, arms thrown over his face to hide his grief and biting his lip to keep from screaming-wailing-sobbing

Obviously there's something here about Dick being very overwhelmed because his relationship with Jason got complicated, what with the persisting attraction

Jason makes it worse because he doesn't share the same concerns

In fact, with how he was raised (by Dick), Jason is a very independent omega. He doesn't need to wait for an alpha to take charge - he'll court Dick if Dick is too much of a pup to do it himself

And thus Dick has to try and hold off a very beautiful headstrong omega and lbr he's gonna lose

I didn't answer you, because

1. The last couple of days my head was moving in between the Moon and Mars, and I'm not sure if I would have been able to remain respectful.

2. I'm getting tired of all these anons coming to my infobox and, for the lack of a better expression, trying to take the piss out of me. If you read my posts you know that he's one of my favourite players, and that I'm not mindless hater about any of our players, but especially not towards him.

3. You were being very condescending and annoying.

But buckle up my dear salty anon.

Dominik, naturally, is an offensive minded midfielder. At Leipzig, he basically played as a wide 10 (or occasional RW) and for the most part he does the same for Hungary. In both teams he was a pressing monster, his pressing is arguably one of the best in the current Liverpool squad as well. The difference is, that in both teams he had other midfielders behind him. He still had defensive duties, but not this current caliber. In Hungary he plays one of the hardest and most taxing roles: he drops deep to collect the ball, helps the build up from deep, and he contributes a LOT in defense, but he also has freedom to roam around the pitch, and enjoys the other midfielders support when he appears in the final third.

In Liverpool, he is a box-to-box midfielder. A different role, and not just a different role in midfield, but he is a midfielder under Klopp, played in the RHS in a triangle with Salah and Trent. Salah is our main goalscorer, Trent is our main creator. His job is to provide a stable link up between the two, allowing them to express themselves freely, offer his support, keep the width when needed, etc etc. Without him doing this, that rhs can't function properly. And this is just one of his many responsibilities. When Trent inverts into midfield he drops back into either help out (Ibou), or takes up completely the RB position. A position he has never played, by the way. He's constantly pressing, constantly running, constantly covering/contributing in defensive duties. He is the 5th fastest player this season. Other than his pressing, his other great quality is his off-ball work. Again, arguably, his awareness and intelligence when it comes to that is one of the best in the current squad. I encourage you to watch back some of our recent matches and take notice of him instead of the one giving the assist/scoring, many cases, without his efforts it wouldn't get to the point of it being a goal scoring opportunity.

I'm not going to argue with you and say that his passing hasn't looked a bit off in certain matches, that he didn't have some bad first touches or unnecessary long shots. He did. But please also think about all these NEW and constant duties, (other than the pressing& off-ball work), doesn't come natural to him at all and how these can affect his performance in the final third. Yes, it's an excuse,but a reasonable one in my opinion, maybe not for you, whatever.

All in all, it's easy to fail when you have been shifted from a role of being supported to being the one who is the constant and many times only support. Mind it, this is happening in a much more physical, much more demanding and stronger league. It's no wonder fatigue and eventually injury caught up to him. Other than Endo (and he only had like 5-6 starters in the PL), all of our starting midfielders struggled with injuries throughout the season, Domi was the last one to go down.

Anyways, this is the last time I did this. I'm so sick and tired, especially now with all the hate towards him, having the same conversation again and again. You think he's a bad, selfish person with a big ego, who insults and makes fun of his teammates etc etc. I'm not here to change your mind. But maybe try at least watching football with your eyes open before you start accusing one of the team's most selfless and most hard-working players, who is literally out injured (and likely very upset and heartbroken about that) because he tried to give his everything for his club, manager, teammates and fans.

Birds of Prey #4 gave us big meaty women slappin' meat. It also since #1 had a LOT of Cass. So let's dive into my thoughts on the issue.

So #4 continues RIGHT off where #3 left us with the Birds kind of getting THE Amazon upset. This issue we get the consequences of it all with a MASSIVE fight.

Cass's portion takes place after "round 2" ends between Barda and Diana. I wouldn't call it a true fight. We know from the onset of Cass's appearance this issue, she watched rounds 1 and 2. In that way it reveals Barda was buying time for Dinah, Harley, Sin, and Future Maps.

I think the moment Barda went down Cass was like, "Okay time for me to be the distraction." And Diana knows this the moment after ordering the Amazons away. She's like, "Aw crap I got ANOTHER fight I gotta end QUICK."

Note that the attacks Cass does here are very unlike her. She rarely uses gadgets save for the grapple gun or batarang. Here she uses SIX gadgets on Diana.

In honesty, I'm amazed at Cass's reserve here.

Because this fight is the mirror opposite of her one with Artemis back in Red Hood & the Outlaws #15. She tried to match the physicality of an Amazon.

Though we never saw the full fight, the end result we did: Cass got smoked. But then the nature of the two fights is quite different. Cass in RH&O was VERY cocky in the issue, and Artemis "schooled" her (I'm still not fond of this issue mind you).

While, in this under a MUCH better writer who understands both characters. The nature of the fight is Cass isn't fighting to beat Diana physically. She's fighting Diana for time.

Sadly for Cass, the strategy can only prolong what Diana is waiting for. Just one opening and that's all she needs to end this.

Because Diana knows by the attacks Cass isn't playing for keeps. She's playing for the time.

Sadly for Cass, it catches up to her.

Though she didn't "win" the fight to distract Diana, she did win in buying time for Barda to have a round 3, and escaping the Amazons as she was the only Bird not caught by them.

Regardless, this was a phenomenal fight showcasing Cass being an expert fighter. Compared to her prior tussle with Artemis, this fight shows layers of maturity for Cass.

Unlike say OTHER fights that occurred two months ago that are more laughable now at how bad they were *cough* Batman #138 *cough*.

Writer Kelly Thompson built the hype up on Cass with #1 for new readers to show WHY she's deadly. Against both the League ninjas and the vampires. That she's crafty AND can take a hit (aka when Barda smacks her early on in the later fight).

I really REALLY adore the small moments Kelly has given Cass and again with this issue giving us a little more Barda/Cass moments.

As you KNOW Barda's respect for Cass is even bigger after this issue. Taking on Diana alone, buying her time to recoup, and escaping the Amazons.

Almost makes me wish Cass could introduce Barda to Steph who'd be all, "MOMMY." With Barda just overshadowing Steph.

Besides the characterization, the true real highlight is artist Leonardo Romero. Just the FIGHT he brought to this issue. This is a fight that's gonna be talked about amongst fans given how lit Romero made it.

Likewise the colors by Jordie Bellaire. For me, a standout moment was the highlights she gave Diana's lasso when it gives off this glow or the colors when Diana smacks Barda HARD.

Everyone is cooking HARD in this book and it shows.

I just have to wonder what the endgame is for Megaera? Other than being another unique visual threat for Cass to fight.

Kind of astonishing really how many astonishing encounters Cass had this year.

As a Cass fan and a fan of amazing fights. This issue delivered for me. It keeps giving me things I never thought I'd ever get to see for the character.

I'm almost curious to see what Thompson has in store next for Cass and the Birds.

Yes! Talia will eventually appear on page, not for a bit though.

The second part of your question is more complicated, and I don’t want to get into too many spoilers, but…the nature of Jason and Talia's relationship before he came to Gotham is a major deviation from Lost Days canon. They were semi estranged early in Asymmetrical Warfare. The endnote of Chapter 1 of Harm Reduction is the first time he’s reached out to her in a while. When he asks for help in the endnote of Chapter 3, it’s the start of a big shift in their relationship.

Talia has a lot of thoughts and feelings about what ninja!Jason is doing with the Ghosts and what RH!Jason has going on in the Alley and with the Bats. Surprise and exasperation feature prominently. I’m keeping my lips zipped on specific details for now. Just keep in mind, Talia is a master manipulator/strategist. In anything she does, she’s always going to be working her own angle. 😉

Yes! My other games aren't going to be set in the RH universe unless specified. But admittedly, he shares a lot of themes with the LIs in RH because he was originally going to be a fourth LI, but I thought four LIs was too much in a big game. Now, I'm more interested in doing BTD-style murdersims with him LOL. (The game hasn't even dropped but the script is already done, and I already have plans for a sequel...)

Generally, yes, but he does put some modicum of truth in his role because that's more convincing. In general, he prefers being in a flexible/dominant role, even if he's supposedly yielding to you. People who interact with him get the sense they can't control him.

You can if you want! You can do whatever you want. (If you wanna get art of him commissioned, why not, as long as it's not AI. I already mentioned my fanwork guidelines and if it's not on there then just assume you're good.)

Yes, absolutely. He was never supposed to live... His condition as a baby was so severe that everyone wondered how he could even function. (The magic in his body is so powerful that it's actively decaying his bones.) He comes from a privileged family of magical healers that couldn't do jack shit for him, but he was a genius, and he knew what he can do, so he started rebelling against normative standards and believing he can dominate nature... because if he can't, his only other choice was to rot away in his parents' mansion. Item ID: RH-2426 Item Name: Galdric’s Taphouse 1st Place Trophy Sword Category: B-2 Origin Point: Telloran, Katal Owner: Naomi Tellorvoso (C), Galdric Faeman Description: A decorative item, styled after an Earthen longsword. The blade itself is 80 cm long and crafted of mid-grade steel. No part of the edge is sharpened, but the point is still capable of piercing unprotected individuals. In place of a fuller, there is a raised section, painted gold, with writing engraved on it: 1st Place Winner Of Trivia Night #26. Three gems adorn the guard (left, center, and right), the different colors representing the three main specialty drinks at The Arched Counter. The hilt is roughly 18 cm long, and is falsely attached to the tang of the blade. It attaches via a screwing motion, and when removed, the hilt’s hollow inside is designed to be used as a flask. Due to this, the overall structure is not sound, and is not intended to be used in actual combat. Supervisor’s Notes: Since a few friends at the office wanted to officially meet Naomi, I figured we’d go out to one of her favorite bars, an old-school place called The Arched Counter. We happened to show up on trivia night… and apparently a team consisting of a Sword Nerd and veteran FPA employees does really, really good at weapon based trivia. Naomi and I got to bring the trophy home, but I promised the others I’d bring it in to show it off. Shame it absolutely smells like a pub… Hopefully we can get the scent out eventually.

  “So, Boss… you and your gal have been together for what, a year now?” Waelin asks, clapping a big hand on Cynthia’s back. The Kha’xan is one of the more senior employees at the FPA, having already worked there for two decades when Cynthia first arrived. They’re an exceptionally dedicated worker, and fiercely protective of younger colleagues, having taken her under their wing while she adjusted to her job. That resulted in a friendship that can never be broken (such is the Kha’xai way, naturally).

“Yeah! We just had our anniversary dinner last week. By the Ancients, I can’t believe I haven’t shown you the photos yet!” Cynthia says, her eyes going wide, immediately pulling out her phone. The mere mention of Naomi had put a twinkle in her eyes, but now she’s full on grinning. Excitement radiates from her as she pulls up photos to share. “We each planned a surprise outing for each other- surprise as in we didn’t know what was planned, but we knew there was something planned- and then had a big night at home together. You should have seen the art gallery she took me to! No photos allowed, unfortunately, but we did pick up a few prints. I’ll have to show you those next time you come over. Let me see if I can-”

Across the way, Xerro is attempting to have a conversation with Naomi. The key word here is “attempting”, as the woman is currently getting distracted by the sight of her girlfriend enthusiastically explaining the in depth recreation of outer spiral early civilization cooking techniques featured at the interactive portion of the art installation. In other words, Naomi is forever adoring her incredible nerdy girlfriend. To the point of getting distracted mid conversation. Again. At least Xerro is amused, offering a hearty chuckle that finally gets Naomi to look back over at him.“I’m glad you two found each other. To think it all started with the FPA deciding to confiscate a tree!” Xerro said, with a toothy grin. The sound of his voice carries, the man excited enough to overcome his normally quiet demeanor, and Cynthia looks up and over at the sound. She waves, giving a sweet smile that once more causes Naomi’s mind to go completely and utterly blank. A moment passes before Xerro laughs again, this time much softer, and leans over to ask a coworker a simple question. “How much do you want to bet they’ll be married by the end of the year?”

BIO: “Overachiever” doesn’t even begin to define Coral. A prodigy ballerina from childhood, the only thing she takes as seriously as her dance career is the costumes she designs for her self-choreographed dance routines. The ballet she wrote and designed as a sophomore, Birth of Venus, caught the attention of RH talent scouts who scooped her up just in time for her junior year. Coral’s work is all inspired by the sea and marine life, whether it’s the vibrant diversity of the reef, the elegant movements of a school of jellyfish, or the gorgeous fins of a moorish idol. Whenever she needs new ideas, she turns to her third passion in life—scuba diving.

Due to her rebellious nature, she often wasn't allowed to leave the Tower. Thanks to that, she's quite pale. After leading the Inquisition, she got sunburned really bad, lol

Her attitude is surprisingly very un-ladylike - despite being a Trevelyan. This was something Josephine was concerned about when they went to Halamshiral, but Evelyn put on such a good mask - remembering all those talks she had with her mother and all the books she read about Orlesian customs, her behavior was perfect,

She's got a big sweet tooth. She loves tiny Orlesian desserts, cakes, chocolate, sugar, and fruit. Instead of eating meals, she tends to snack throughout the day, taking a little pouch filled with dried fruit, cheese, bread, and nuts.

JOHN CARTER, ‘’LE ALEX HALEY DU JAZZ’’

Né le 24 septembre 1929 à Fort Worth, au Texas, John Wallace Carter avait d’abord étudié le saxophone alto avant de commencer à jouer de la clarinette à l’âge de douze ans. Très influencé par la musique gospel qu’il avait écoutée à l’église baptiste durant son enfance et par la musique de Duke Ellington, Count Basie et Cab Calloway, Carter avait amorcé sa carrière en jouant du blues au Woodman’s Hall d’Anacostia, un club de jazz de Washington, D.C. Il avait aussi fait équipe avec Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman et Charles Moffett dans les années 1940.

Après avoir fréquenté le I.M. Terrell High School, Carter avait décroch�� un baccalauréat en éducation musicale à l’Université Lincoln de Jefferson, au Missouri, en 1949, avant de compléter une maîtrise en éducation musicale à l’Université du Colorado en 1956.

De 1949 à 1961, Carter avait gagné sa vie en enseignant la musique dans le réseau d’écoles publiques de Fort Worth. Parallèlement à sa carrière de professeur, Carter avait continué d’expérimenter avec la clarinette et avait découvert que c’était cet instrument qui lui permettait d’exprimer le mieux sa personnalité musicale. Parmi les premières influences de Carter, on remarquait Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Duke Ellington et Count Basie.

Après s’être installé à Los Angeles, Carter avait enseigné durant vingt et un ans (1961-1982) dans les écoles élémentaires publiques de la ville.

DÉBUTS DE CARRIÈRE

En 1964, Carter avait formé le  New Art Jazz Ensemble avec le trompettiste Bobby Bradford,  le contrebassiste Tom Williamson et le batteur Bruz Freeman, un pionnier du free jazz qui avait d’abord joué avec Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins et Sarah Vaughan. Le groupe avait poursuivi ses activités jusqu’à la mort de Carter en 1991 et se produisait surtout dans le Nord-est des États-Unis.

Décrivant sa première rencontre avec Bradford, qui était de six ans son cadet, Carter avait expliqué: ‘’I met him when I got out therem about ‘65, Bob was living in Pomona and teaching out there, and I was teaching out there (L.A.). I was very frustrated with whar I was doing. I had come here un 1961 and had aspirations for playing my music and I thought I could get as much studio work as I wanted to do when I got out here {...}. I play good lead alto, tenor, soprano, good flute and clarinet of course. I can play oboe and basson, all well enough to do session work.’’ Dans la même entrevue, Carter avait ajouté: ‘’Bob had been with Ornette up to ‘62, then went back to Texas and taught for a couple of years and then moved out there. Well so Bobby really wasn’t doing anything either, on any kinf of regular basis so we got together, it was very natural for us to try to get a group together.’’

Parallèlement à sa collaboration avec Bradford, Carter avait joué du jazz progressif avec des artistes locaux, se produisant à la flûte et au saxophone tout en approfondissant sa maîtrise de la clarinette, contribuant ainsi à briser les frontières musicales tout en était toujours accompagné par Bradford à la trompette. Au cours de cette période, Carter avait aussi joué avec le pianiste Hampton Hawes et le saxophoniste Harold Land.

Carter avait également opéré son propre club de jazz, le Rudolph’s, afin de contribuer au développement de la relève. En 1967, Carter avait dirigé une oeuvre d’Ornette Coleman à UCLA. Carter expliquait: ‘’It was a suite that Ornette had just done for the Guggenheim Grant that he had just got, whatever year that was. A very difficult pass. The band was in the festival house orchestra, whoever was playing brought along their charts and we played them. Carmen McRae was on that and Clark Terry. Ornette’s piece was written for big band against his quintet. {...} Full group, five trumpets, four trombones, five reed and a full rhythm section, and violins and cellos. He played that music a lot of times, he played it with the San Francisco Symphony, he played it in Europe and back in New York.’’

Dans les années 1970, Carter avait fait partie du  Little Big Horn Workshop avec Bradford et Newton. Au cours de cette période, Carter s’était également fait connaître pour ses concerts en solo. Dans le cadre du New Jazz Festival de Moers en 1979, Carter s’était produit en duo avec le clarinettiste allemand Theo Jörgensmann durant trois jours. Le concert, qui avait fait connaître Carter à travers le monde, avait donné lieu à une nouvelle performance du duo en 1994.

Vers 1973, Carter et Bradford avaient fait une tournée en Europe et avaient enregistré avec le pianiste Horace Tapscott. Lors d’un séjour à Paris, Carter avait même joué du bebop avec Jaki Byard et Kenny Clarke.

Carter et Bradford s’étaient également produits en concert à UCLA en compagnie de l’Art Ensemble of Chicago, avec qui ils avaient enregistré l’album Tandem 1 en 1979. Après s’être joint au quintet d’instruments à vent de James Newton, Carter avait fondé en 1981 le groupe Clarinet Summit avec Alvin Batiste, Jimmy Hamilton et David Murray.  

DERNIÈRES ANNÈES

Même s’il maîtrisait plusieurs instruments, Carter avait surtout joué de la clarinette et du saxophone soprano à partir de la fin des années 1970. Il expliquait: ‘’I think that certain personalities goes with certain instruments. While I have known that all along it took me a long time to associate that myself - because it takes a long time to try and see yourself, and I’m still trying. Like I know what that I am not a tenor player, but I’ve spent a lot of time fooling with the tenor saxophone. I played tenor and college because that was the only way I could get into the dance band. In those days I couldn’t read as well as other fellows could but I could solo better that they could so they need me in the band for that (rires). So I got in on tenor.’’

Lorsque sa fille et ses trois fils avaient atteint l’âge adulte au début des années 1980, Carter avait commencé à enseigner la clarinette à plein temps au Wind College de Los Angeles, une école qu’il avait lui-même fondée. Carter, qui possédait sa propre maison de disques, avait également enregistré avec Bradford et Newton l’album Night Fire, qui comprenait des classiques comme “Morning Bell”, “Juba Stomp” et “Buckin.”’ Sur l’album Dance of the Love Ghosts, Carter avait combiné les cuivres, les synthétiseurs et des percussions traditionnelles comme le kete et le dawuro. En plus de la chanson titre, l’album incluait les pièces The Captain’s Dilemma” et “Moon Waltz”, toutes des compositions originales.

De 1982 à 1990, Carter avait résumé sa vision du jazz et de l’histoire des Afro-Américains dans la suite en cinq parties Roots and Folklore: Episodes in the Development of American Folk Music. Publié dans un coffret de cinq CD, l’oeuvre, qui combinait le jazz moderne avec le blues et le jazz traditionnel, avait été saluée par la critique comme une des meilleures réalisations des années 1990. En 1998, le clarinettiste François Houle avait repris des extraits de l’oeuvre sur son album intitulé In the Vernacular—Music of John Carter.

Peu avant la mort de Carter en 1991,  le New Arts Jazz Ensemble avait enregistré un dernier album. Intitulé ‘’Seeking’’, l’album comprenait cinq compositions originales de Carter, dont “Karen on Monday” et “Sticks and Stones”.

John Carter est mort au Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital d’Inglewood en Californie, le 31 mars 1991 à la suite de complications liés à son cancer des poumons. Carter laissait dans le deuil son épouse Gloria, sa fille Karen et ses fils John Jr., Stanley et Kris. Atteint d’une tumeur non maline, Carter s’était fait retirer un de ses poumons un an avant sa mort, mais il avait continué de se produire sur scène. Carter avait présenté une de ses dernières performances en février dans le cadre d’un événement organisé par la Society for Jazz and World Music à Santa Barbara, en Californie.

Continuant d’explorer l’histoire du peuple afro-américain, Carter avait présenté en septembre 1990 sa composition “Castles of Ghana”, une suite inspirée de la traite des esclaves en Afrique de l’Ouest au 16 siècle,  au Japan America Theatre de Los Angeles. Dans le cadre d’une entrevue accordée au New York Times en 1990, Carter avait déclaré qu’il avait conçu le projet après que son fils John Jr., qui revenait d’un voyage en Afrique de l’ouest, lui ait expliqué que les châteaux du Ghana étaient utilisés comme lieu de détention pour les futurs esclaves avait d’être expédiés en Amérique.

Au moment de sa mort, Carter devait se produire avec un quartet comprenant Perry Robinson, Theo Jörgensmann et Eckard Koltermann.

Carter a été admis au Down Beat Hall of Fame l’année-même de sa mort en 1991. Au cours de sa carrière, Carter avait remporté deux autres prix décernés par le magazine: le premier pour un enregistrement avec un petit groupe en 1973, et le second comme clarinettiste méritant la meilleure reconnaissance en 1982.

En 1996, Carter avait obtenu quatre étoiles du magazine Q et cinq étoiles du NAPRA Trade Journal pour ses compositions “Sippi Strut”, “Spats”, “Hymn to Freedom” et “And I Saw Them” tirées de son album Shadows on a Wall. Commentant le dernier album de Carter, le critique David Grogan avait décrit le musicien comme un compositeur d’avant-garde passionné par l’histoire du peuple afro-américain et l’avait surnommé le ‘’Alex Haley of the Jazz world.”

Carter avait souvent été comparé au trompettiste Wynton Marsalis pour la beauté et la spontanéité de son jeu. Le tubiste et contrebassiste Red Callender qui avait accompagné Carter, Bradford et Newton sur l’album Dauwhe, avait souligné la maîtrise par Carter de son intrument dans l’ouvrage Rough Guides to Jazz, dans lequel il écrivait: “I had never heard anybody with such control on the clarinet…. His complete mastery of the instrument is astounding.” 

Les compositions de Carter pour clarinette, trompette, cornet, violon, trombone, batterie et contrebasse portaient souvent des titres évocateurs comme “Evening Prayer”, “Conversations”, “The Fallen Prince” et “Theme of Desperation.” 

Plusieurs musiciens ont rendu hommage à Carter après sa mort, dont le clarinettiste François Houle qui avait enregistré des versions lyriques de ses compositions “Sticks and Stones” and “Karen on Monday” sur son album Vernacular—Music of John Carter publié en 1998.

Un des premiers clarinettistes de l’histoire à avoir exprimé une vision humaniste de l’héritage africain dans le jazz, Carter avait toujours improvisé avec énormément d’émotion. Les recherches tonales de Carter l’avaient incité à étudier le passé esclavagiste des Afro-Américains et à mettre en lumière leur combat pour l’émancipation après la Guerre civile. Artiste passionné, très articulé intellectuellement et très concentré sur sa musique, Carter avait influencé toute une nouvelle génération de musiciens, dont Julius Hemphill, Peter Epstein, James Newton, David Murray et Bobby Bradford.

My Early/Initial Thoughts on the new Rainbow High Dolls

So today- the new Rainbow High dolls, dubbed as "Wave 5" have had their promotional images leaked! I am super excited for our new characters, and wanted to make a short post going through each one, and what i currently think of each one.

THE NEW BOXES I'm not a big fan of the new boxes. I'm really upset to be losing 2nd outfits, and would pay extra money if it meant getting them. The accessories are fine too, and I like that the new dolls seemingly come with more. Not all of them are equally as cool as the other though, which is a shame. The plain, square box feel very un-Rainbow High- i would have rather they kept one of the sides rounded, perhaps looking similar to the JH boxes? Also, what's up with the "Scan for free toy!" QR?

KIM NGUYEN

From surname alone, we can see she will likely be Vietnamese, which is really cool! Personally, I'm not big on her design. Her hair & face make her look like a Cleo DeNile bootleg, and i really don't like her denim outfit. It's very similar to Heather's, but falls flat in comparison. It's super cool she comes with the old sewing machine mold- i love the silver details.

OLIVIA WOODS

I'm so excited to see an Olive toned doll- and she does not disappoint ! Olivia's face is so pretty- and I think she has freckles? I love her outfit, it gives a sort of camo or camping vibe off. Her sunglasses are also super cute. I love her hair & makeup- it suits her so well! Based off the fact she comes with a hairdryer, i am thinking she may be a cosmetology focus, like Stella?

VICTORIA WHITMAN

Possibly my favorite of the set! I ADORE her soft pink dress, and natural strawberry blonde hair. I'm also so happy to see a doll who is covered in freckles, instead of just having a few big dots across her nose and cheeks. She is so soft and sweet looking, and I hope she lives up to that.

MICHELLE ST. CHARLES

She's giving retro-futurism and i LOVE IT! Her clear coat and orange dress are to die for, and she has longer nails! It's not super easy to see from the photos, but Michelle looks to have much shorter hair than the typical RH doll, which is so cool to see. Michelle's makeup is equally as good- so cool to see her rocking a bright orange lip! Michelle lowkey looks like a character from LazyTown, Go Jetters, or Hi-5 and i LOVE IT.

AIDAN RUSSELL

The final A to get a doll! And... I'm so upset we're getting it like this, and not as a fashion closet. Aidan looks very similar to the show, with his jacket, shirt, and shorts all matching. In addition, they gave him some cool jewelry! I'm so glad they did not give him the default face mold, and is it just me but he has a different nose shape? My biggest gripe is his hair... looks bad. What happened? Could they not give him soft spikes, like he does in the show?

PRISCILLA PEREZ

If I'm being honest... she's a slightly better Stella Monroe. I like her more coral-y colour more, and her face mold, but other than that, she just looks like an Updated version of Stella. I love how her hair looks, though! The style is just so pretty.
