The Path Not Taken

Writing this fic was a journey and a half - I’ve never taken part in a Big Bang before and I learned a lot about writing (and planning!) a long-form fic over months - lots of things to take with me for next time. Life also got in the way a bit (losing my job was definitely a highlight) but we got there in the end!

I’d like to thank my wonderful artists for creating such amazing pieces - seeing things I’ve written come to life like this is such an honour 🧡 I’d also like to thank the @rexobibang mods for creating and running this fun event for this awesome rarepair 🧡

“Please,” Rex says quietly. It’s desperate, a plea, almost lost in the jumble of cutlery and trays from the bussing station across the room.

“I’m not trying to out you, Rex,” Obi-Wan says softly, because he has to press otherwise they’ll get nowhere. “But you do need to address this. I’m not always going to be there to pretend it was me the next time you forget yourself. This is nothing to be afraid of; you’re remarkable, in fact. One of a kind.”

And that was the wrong thing to say.

Rex's goal was to get into the organization, get the information, and take it down. Of course, no one had ever successfully infiltrated this empire, and most people had died attempting it, so it was easier said than done. But, the fact that a government agency had also sent in an agent, their best agent, was either a very good or very bad thing. Rex just happened to recognize them, and for some reason, Ben had decided that working together is the best option. What could go wrong?

In the Darning is, admittedly, born at least in part out of spite. As anyone who's followed this blog long enough has probably noticed, I am not a fan of Anakin Skywalker. I typically try to be more nuanced with him in my works, because largely I believe that most characters should be handled with nuance (especially because I prefer my characters to have depth) and because a lot of the time, the plot demands it. For example, with Foelu, there were a lot of things with Anakin that I couldn't address without spending more time on him than I wanted to or putting Obi-Wan through even more than I already did, so I focused more on Anakin choosing to make better choices moving forward rather than addressing the things he'd already done.

Darning is, if not the opposite, close to it. I'm putting the rest of this under a read-more since this post is getting a little long.

Essentially, Rex realizes pretty early into the war that the 501st's casualties are higher than they should be. He decides to give their general the benefit of the doubt, because it became clear very quickly after they deployed that (most of) the Jedi had little to no practical experience with warfare. He gives Anakin a year to get his feet underneath him and learn to do better, and then he takes all of the evidence he's compiled over the course of that year to the Jedi Council. Anakin is then pulled from the field and put into mandatory mindhealing, where he opens his mouth and manages to make things...much worse for himself.

Darning is a method of mending fabric wherein the repair is often visible and becomes a part of the fabric itself. It can be very beautiful. This story is about Obi-Wan, Rex, and their family mending themselves and each other in the wake of that.

I am hoping to write this piece for the RexObi Big Bang.

I'm taking as many questions on each WIP as y'all wanna send me, so don't feel like you can't ask about one just because someone else did <3 The WIP game post can be found here.

Other than the obvious, what is a work in your WIP folder that will contain Rex? Got any fun Rex things to share with me? I'm predictable. LOOK. I love my boy getting attention.

There is one that I desperately want to both show off and also whine a lot about, but I can't because we have missed the promo period for that project and now you all will have to both wait and cheer me and @insertmeaningfulusername on to finish our pieces for the Clone Bang to see it (I'm gonna be so fucking proud when it is finally done!) TT^TT

And I also have a lot of other works that are connected to that big bang project and they are adorable and I want to show those off too but but but... This little overwhelmed Anakin is from one of these connecting projects, and probably that is all that I can rightfully show off right now, but Rex in that one is gonna be so good, I'm telling you!

I've got a LOT of (like, 3? which counts for a lot in my case, honestly) MaulRex plans (I'm running an agenda here) which will make me dust off my old AO3 account because I surely won't be able to post those drawings here even with a mature label lol.

There is cowboy Rex and Cody in the pile I shared in a previous answer; I signed up for a rexobi bingo but I don't have anything tangible for that one yet; but but but! there is also one that is permanently on the backburner in my brain from the "aaaaangst" labelled wip (see below)

Which gets redrawn basically every time I open it up, but the concept is based on Michelangelo's Pieta which is one of my all time favourite sculptures, I love it sooo much, it's so beautiful! but with Fives and Rex (because hey hello that arc had completely destroyed me, I haven't been alright ever since I watched it) with various helmets strewn around on the groun and the looming large forms/statues of armed clone troopers in the background as if they were pillars in a cathedral or something.

I have a very clear idea of what I would like it to be, which is a problem because that does not match my skill level and visual library, so I'll have to adjust to that, but it would be so very cool if I could figure out the adjusted pose (because armor makes things bend and twist differently even on a dead-limp body, and would you believe it clone body types do not match a scrawny Christ and his mother lol). Plus I'm undecided whether I only want Echo included as a broken helmet at their feet, or if I want him in there leaning against Rex's knee and hanging on to Fives' hand for the extra kick of it.

This is my big project I dream about finishing aside from that changeling AU and octo!MaulRex drawing.

2024 Event Interest Check!

We're looking for feedback for the 2024 Event, specifically about what dates would work best for everyone and what format everyone would like to see!

A little bit of clarity for those who have not done this before -- the option to allow the Prompt Fest to be hosted on AO3 means that people would be able to submit their prompts via AO3, similar to exchanges, and then be able to claim prompts anonymously.

There's also an added interest check for future RexObi Big Bangs.

Rex smiled, hiding his surprise. “I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”

The man moved slightly to lean into Rex’s space, brushing his lapel with an elegant hand. “I wasn’t expecting to see you either. But since you are here, I have some people I must introduce you to.” He leaned in, whispering, “Ben.”

Rex smiled and lowered his voice like it was a secret even though the people around them would be able to hear anyway. “Well then, I’ll follow your lead.”

Ben was a fairly unknown quantity. Competent, sure. Charismatic, definitely. But Rex knew hardly anything else about him.

First ship: Uhhhhhh, I’m not sure I even remember my first ship. I got into fandom and by extension shipping when I was 13 or 14 so a long time ago. I think it was Kingdom Hearts? Might have been something else?

Three ships: Definitly Codywan, this ship has my entire heart right now. Rexobi as well since it is very much occupying brain space since I am participating in the Big Bang. For the third I will be veering very off course and say Eddy/Venom. Don’t judge me please, somehow I have fallen neck deep into open symbrock fic tabs and I have no idea how it happened

Last song: Giantess of Ironwood by Bear McCreary. I’m absolutely in love with both God of War soundtracks and obsessively playing Ragnarok currently after finishing the first game for the first time. (Also hurdy gurdy my absolutely beloved)

Last Movie: Glass Onion. Loved it, adored it, still continuing to rave about it!

Summary: There’s an enigma at the end of the corridor with too-bright hair, and a brighter mind. Padawan Ben discovers a secret within a secret on the rain-soaked world of Kamino; a clone army, and a boy who can move things with his mind. Decades later as war gnaws on the galaxy, Commander Cody has a bone to pick, Anakin Skywalker tries to do good by his men, and General Kenobi meets Captain Rex for the first time, again. With Rex bent on forgetting he was ever unique, Obi-Wan asks himself if it’s even possible to win this war while keeping his sanity, keeping Rex’s secret, and keeping Rex too?

Art preview: All will be revealed on the posting date but I can say from the WIP previews my amazing artists Leo and Ryr have shared with me that you are in for a mega-treat!

Story Snippet:

“I’d glad to have someone who has an idea of what I’ve put up with for the last decade. Very happy too,” Obi-Wan adds, pouring the hot water, “to see you not taking any of Anakin’s shit.”

Rex doesn’t seem to know what to do with this information or his helmet. The latter ends up in his lap, knocking its forehead against the edge of the table in the mess as Obi-Wan shoves a steaming mug of tea at him and begins pouring his own.

It’s a moment before Obi-Wan remembers that even if off-duty there’s still army bullshit. “At ease?” He offers, to little visible change in Rex, “and you can speak freely in my presence. In perpetuity, if you don’t mind.” Another moment crawls by before it dawns on him that it’s not etiquette that’s got Rex’s tongue, but something worse.
