Finished my 5th rewatch of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and I still adore it with all my heart. I cried again as well.

I’m so frustrated and heartbroken that we’re not getting a second season. Everyday I pray that it’ll get picked up by another network or get a book/comic sequel but that seems more unlikely with each passing day. I love this show and I’d say it’s in my top 3 favorite shows of all time.

It’s beautiful, fun, and has great characters. I’ll always revisit AoR if I need something fun to watch. I just wish we’d get to see the rest of the story.

I love The Dark Crystal and I’ll continue to sing its praises til the day I die

honestly one of the things that bugs me the most about AoR being cancelled is that i need to know what happens to Deet. the poor kid weilds a dark and terrible power that consumes her and has to leave Rian and everyone behind and the wordless interaction between her and Rian makes that so much worse. Because she desperately wants to celebrate with everyone. She wants to continue helping. But if she explains to Rian why she’s leaving they both know he’ll try to convince her to stay and find a cure. But he has to lead the resistance and she knows that and so she leaves without a word. Just a look holding a million apologies and wishes of luck.

every few months I have a several weeks phase of being hyper interested in the dark crystal AoR all over again and then sad that it got cancelled and we will probably never see a second season... So now I think I’m gonna rewatch it the next days and then be even more sad, yes sounds like an incredible idea 🙏(Netflix why)

Labyrinth 30 Day Challenge (Days 23 - 30) (*Last batch to answer! As I suspected, I forgot about these. XD)

23 - Do you have any theories about the movie? 

I have a few, though most tend to center around Jareth and his background. My personal headcanon is that he is some variant of fae, though regardless of what he is [ex. fae, human, goblin], I think his existence is linked directly to human belief, such as seen with Sarah and her influence/power. Going off of this, I tend to theorize that the Underground overall is a mirror reflection of the Aboveground, but in the sense that it reflects dreams/beliefs/fantasies. That’s why it’s reminiscent of the old faerie stories in so many ways, and humans have the ability to mold the Aboveground to reflect whatever their dreams/fairytale stories are.

24 - Add a scene to the story. 

Since I don’t have the bandwidth to write it out, one scene I would add is something involving Jareth after the ballroom scene - given the expression he makes when Sarah breaks free of the hallucination, I really would have liked to have seen a scene with him following that. (What was his reaction? What did he do afterward?) I feel like something after that moment could have given us a lot of insight into Jareth overall, that maybe we didn’t necessarily get with other scenes. Basically, I’d add another scene with Jareth in some capacity though. I always love seeing him. XD

25 - Would you like a remake of Labyrinth? How do you imagine it would be? 

I personally would not like a remake - aside from the fact that I think remakes in general have become exhausting cash grabs, I really feel like it would be hard to keep the magic and integrity of the original film. Labyrinth definitely isn’t perfect from a technical standpoint by today’s standards, but there’s so much charm to the puppetry. The cast was excellent, and I really can’t imagine anyone other than David Bowie in Jareth’s role. If a remake was done, I really don’t think it’d have the same effect or impact as the original.

26 - What about a sequel? 

I’m pretty iffy on this, but my general feeling is I wouldn’t like one. However, I would be open to a prequel or spin-off centered on the Underground/goblin characters, similar to how The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was. I’m a huge fan of The Dark Crystal and was blown away by that series, though I think a huge part of it was that the main characters in AOR weren’t Jen and Kira. I feel like the focus would have to be shifted to other characters for it to be successful, but I think a spin-off/prequel could work with that level of detail and worldbuilding that AOR received.

27 - 10 years have passed. What do you think happened with Sarah, Jareth, etc? 

This is where fanfiction is such a fun thing, because we can think about what might have happened. Personally, I think Sarah and Jareth’s paths split. I think Sarah was able to grow into herself more as a person, but Jareth was held back by something - he couldn’t keep her, and he couldn’t follow her. There was some kind of sense of isolation at the end, and I’m not sure if Jareth ever resolved whatever was going on. (Whereas Sarah’s arc came full circle, Jareth’s felt as though it got stuck - as though he were left without something. And I think that was intentional on Jim Henson’s part.) Not to say a happier ending wasn’t waiting for Jareth - this is just my own personal interpretation of the story, and I think it’s one reason it always impacted me as a child and made me a little sad. His arc always read as little more tragic to me.

28 - If Jareth and Sarah meet each other again, how do you think this meeting would be? 

I think it could go a lot of ways - there could be some uncertainty and distrust on Sarah’s end, and Jareth could be bitter - angry and yearning. But, I think there could also be a mutual respect for how matched they seemed to be? It’s tricky, because Jareth doesn’t have power over Sarah, but by the end of the film, they feel closer to equals in some regards than not. I definitely believe they made a lasting impression on one another.

29 - Do you think there is a message in the movie? What? 

For me, the biggest message was always that transition from childhood to adulthood, and how it isn’t cut and dry - there are things you will yearn for and need (such as Sarah indicating she needs Hoggle, Ludo, and Didymus at the end, occasionally for no reason at all), but there are also things and people you will have to walk away from (ex. Jareth). It’s always been a really bittersweet message that I think speaks to a lot of people (myself included). Honestly, for years the ending of Labyrinth made me simultaneously happy and sad, and I think it took a while before I realized this message was why. 

30 - Last one: What made you like/love Labyrinth?

It kind of goes back to the first question I answered of how I discovered it, but as a little kid I just...loved Sarah’s dress. And you know, not even the ballgown, but the white one she wears in the park. For some reason, that’s my earliest memory of when I saw the film. As a child, it just was a real fantasy for me. The puppetry and goblins were really engaging even though I was scared when I first saw them, and it honestly has always felt like such a layered film. I can always go back to it and rewatch things, catching stuff I might have missed. It’s just a deeply comforting film to watch and is always a nice offer of a little escapism. ^^

Hey dude, once again your art is amazing! I must ask how do you draw your skeksis, I'm having issues with the robes and body structures and I'm wondering if its possible for a tutorial or something.

I don’t blame you for having difficulty drawing them. While their outlandish designs are perfect for a medium like puppetry, they don’t translate too well to drawing. And then there’s their funky anatomy and dealing with foreshortening when drawing their faces. So here’s some tips that I have used that helped me draw these nasty birds:

Gather reference and lots of it, whether it’s from the show, movie, or behind-the-scenes/production. For screenshots from AOR, I recommend using cap-that: it has a great abundance of shots and it’s all organized by episode (not to mention the overall quality is pretty good).

Rewatching scenes from the movie/show and study how the skeksis and their garments move. 

Do screenshot drawing studies. Here’s some of skekMal I did months back, as examples:

You don’t have to go crazy like I did, but doing these helped me a lot!

Break down the characters into simple shapes. This can help especially if you’re having issues with foreshortening. Something like this:

Simplify them. You don’t have to include in every detail, color, or accessory. Keep the ones you think are important to the character and get rid of the rest. Stick to a specific color scheme and reuse colors to make things easier for yourself. 

Practice, practice, practice! And don’t get discouraged if they don’t come out right the first time. The more you draw them, the better you’ll get. Here’s how I improved drawing some of the skeksis within a few months:

Seeing Augrah so connected to the Skeksis was strange to me, because the original film gave me the impression the Skeksis had no idea who she was and also didn't care.

yeah i get it too!  especially when i rewatched the movie after AOR and saw this interchange:

“you want gelfling, why not ask me????”  ????

like, in AOR, she like uses the skeksis skekMal’s body as a vessel to come back from the afterlife and leads a bunch of gelfling to kill the skeksis so like Aughra sis maybe they didn’t call you up because you have been antagonizing them ever since you woke up from that long star-gazing nap

however i do really think ultimate canon is the original and the prequel series, so i decided to reconcile it by watching skekZok closely in this scene.  he definitely acts like he knows her, like he knows she’s up to something, he calls her “haradin,” basically meaning an evil old woman, which could just be name-calling, but i feel like it is SUPER appropriate to her character (oldnesss is literally a part of her character), and he also immediately suspects she helped Jen, the gelfling, probs due to the whole being besties with Rian’s gang thing back in the day.  

so that’s how i reconcile that.  as to why they didn’t care before they saw her, maybe they assumed she was dead again just like they did in AOR lol

“she’s as ugly as ever!”  has the same energy as “?  this is noOO GELFLING?!!!”

Rewatching the first Lore scene in AOR and Andy Samberg really does a great job with the voice acting. SkekGra’s voice is lower and calmer, but occasionally gets that squawk to it that his voice has so much of later. It’s clear this is a very different, younger SkekGra. I’ve had a hard time imagining his voice as a fearsome conqueror, but listening to that scene again, I can definitely hear it.

I JUST REALLY HATE NETFLIX RIGHT NOW

They Avatar, the show of my childhood, by making "the movie that shall not be named", thenthey have the nerve TO CANCEL AGE OF RESISTANCE AFTER AN EMMY!!! And honestly the reason why they did it is stupid. Just really REALLY stupid. Literally the only reason I had Netflix was for AoR, and I already own ATLA and LOK.

So I say it now the only reason I will EVER see that red N on my screen again is for when I rewatch Age of resistance (of course) OR if they somehow grow a couple brain cells and renew age of resistance.

AOR

God, so I'm rewatching Age of Resistance for like the sixth time and I'm just so sad thinking about what happened to Deet after seeing her in the first episode compared to the finale. She was so connected to Thra even before she left the caves of Grot and during her time up Topside she fell in love with everything she encountered including things that scared her such as the Arathim - when one tried to possess her she tried to grab it rather than kill it like the Stonewood Gelfling did - she also never judged any other Gelfling she met that clearly showed their disgust at her for being a Grottan, which was awful. She was so loving and accepting and when you compare her to Rian and Brea she was the only one of the three to naturally realize that everything on Thra was one without any prompting, she only ever showed excitement at meeting a Gelfling from another Clan. She was also the only one to actually be chosen to stop The Darkening. Rian and Brea witness the effects of the Skeksis firsthand (draining and tithing) and are forced to act against it with Rian wanting justice for Mira and Brea wanting truth about the Skeksis ways. Deet had no idea what was going on other than the Nurloc being darkened and the vision from the Sanctuary Tree, and yet she still chose to leave her home into a completely different world because she knew it was the right thing to do. And throughout the series Deet is judged for simply being herself yet she still chose to help them and put others first. She wanted everyone to just be together and get on.

We see Rian and Brea lose their loved ones yet Deets family and home go almost untouched so I thought that she was actually going to come out joining the resistance with her Clan ready to end the Skeksis ruling Thra but instead of that she loses everything by once again worrying about others first. After she takes The Darkening into herself she can't be around the life she protected and loved anymore and the final shot we see of her is the most awful thing because you can tell she's already realising what's happening to her because of how defeated she looked when she sees Rian and how she just slowly walks off while everything dies around her.

I just can't cope with how sad it was (a lot of the final episode ruined me) and how if there's a second season every scene with Deet will probably be us seeing everything around her be affected by the Darkening and Deets reaction to it 😖😖😖

Also her full name has Thra in it, it took me ages to realize

Listening to the AOR Spanish dub part 1 (ep1-3)

(SPOILERS, OF COURSE)

- Tavra’s voice is SO BEAUTIFUL - They all moan a lot less, which I like - Deet sounds WAY older. Which is not a bad thing and I actually like a lot its so soothing WEEPS - Ordon, Onica and SkekOk’s voices I prefer in english, only because Ordon sounds a lot more grand/commanding and Ok’s voice is a lot more timid and wobbling in the english dub, same with Onica’s being more soft and expressive - The same problem with most Spanish dubs of english shows applies: more words means they usually have to cram more in/talk faster. They also went for very direct translations, which doesn’t help it very much. Tek’s voice isn’t quite as expressive as it could be.

- Rian’s voice is so cute oh gosh. Also Sil, Zok, and Lach’s voices are spot on. - VLISTE STABA’S VOICE IS SO MUCH COOLER - Maudra Argot sounds like my tia I would die for her - They used like. an actual child for Bobbin’s voice he sounds 10000% less annoying - Uh oh SkekSo’s voice is hot. also i LOVE the way SkekSil’s annunciations with everything he says this is such a good little quirk - Hup’s voice is very fun - I have so many mixed feelings abt Seladon’s voice on one hand its perfect. But whistling S’s make my misophonia go apeshit - I’m really excited to hear SkekMal he’s nowhere near arriving but I’m so excited.  - I love the gelfling who run’s the order of lesser service  - Unrelated Seladon is so pretty I have to just mention that again

- Also unrelated but rewatching this made me really wonder about Spriton-Stonewood relations. The desc.s say they’re feuding clans, but all of their interactions seem on really good terms so I wonder about the specifics of that - I just once again have to say how perfect SkekSil’s voice is - Mayrin sounds a lot more tired/dismissive towards Seladon and it REALLY sells the resentment a lot more. She’s a lot more outright insensitive rather than just oblivious like she is in the english dub and I much prefer it. - Fara ily - The spa scene didn’t have the same chaotic energy :( I feel deprived. - Aughra’s voice is growing on me i love it - Also unrelated but I just noticed the Sifan dock is inside a giant ribcage I LOVE that!! - I’M SO EXCITED TO HEAR SKEKGRA
