Loyalty Program: Definition, Purposes, How It Works
Keeping existing customers has become more challenging than attracting new ones. Companies are constantly in search of a winning customer retention formula. However, what works for some might not work for everyone. Yet, there's a tactic that brings results—loyalty programs.
What Is a Loyalty Program
Loyalty programs comprise incentives offered to customers who make repeat purchases from a brand. Companies across various industries use loyalty programs as a retention tool and a way to show gratitude to their clientele. In a way, it's like sending thank-you cards to customers who choose their brand.
These programs vary between organizations  but, in most cases, provide buyers with the following:
early access to new products and sales
member-only discounts
gifts
More and more companies familiarize customers with a reward program right after their first purchase. Such a move motivates newcomers to continue buying from the company, as they know it leads to better offers.
The Most Commonly Offered Loyalty Programs
When creating a loyalty program, companies should rely on customer data showcasing users' purchasing patterns, needs, and preferences. From there, they can go for:
Points-based Loyalty Program
Points-based systems have proven effective in increasing buyer engagement. Companies invite their customers to collect points to access special offers. Depending on the offer, points can be converted into a credit a customer can use for a next purchase or exchange for a gift.
Businesses employ different technologies to streamline the tracking process. For instance, customers create accounts where all their purchases and points are stored; some companies even develop apps accessible through smartphones.
Spend-based Reward Programs
Spend-based reward programs are for customers who spend considerable sums on a company's products or services. The rules for accessing the incentives within a spend-based program are straightforward: the more money customers spend, the more rewards are at their disposal.
Tier-based Loyalty Programs
Gamification has entered the business environment. You know how progressing in a video game means moving through levels. Many companies have adopted the same approach, creating a tier-based rewards system where reaching a certain level unlocks exclusive offers, such as special pricing for the most exclusive items.
Mission-based and Referral Programs
Mission-based loyalty programs are ideal for companies that want to present themselves as more than a service provider; they want to be perceived as valuable community members. When participating in such a program, customers get to choose a cause to which a percentage of their money will go.
On the other hand, with referral programs, companies reward customers who recommend their products or services to friends and family. This program has also proven valuable as a marketing tool, making existing customers brand advocates.
The Effects of Loyalty Programs
Modern-day customers expect a complete experience that goes beyond the quality of products or services. That's where loyalty programs come into play. If created and implemented properly, they can:
Increase Customer Retention
As said earlier, loyalty programs are valuable retention tools that encourage existing customers to buy frequently and spend more money on a brand's products or services, knowing they will be rewarded for their efforts.
Also, loyalty programs are a great way of showing appreciation to loyal customers. Buyer preferences have changed; they want a partner helping them overcome specific challenges, not just a vendor they buy from.
Stand Out in the Market
A well-thought-out loyalty program can help a brand differentiate itself from competitors. Customers will always turn to a business with a better offer. If a company provides discounts and rewards to buyers, they are more likely to choose it over another brand with a similar offering but without a rewards program.
Grow a Customer Base
Aside from helping companies retain existing customers, loyalty programs enable them to acquire new ones. For instance, referral programs reward customers for spreading the good word about a brand. That way, an organization ensures the retention of existing customers and the growth of its customer base.
Loyalty programs are not set in stone. They are subject to change to yield the best results. Companies must be ready for a lot of testing to determine what works or doesn't, ensuring the program they build aligns with their business objectives and buyers' needs.

In the past, people in the Animal Crossing community would make fun of Tom Nook as a sleazy landlord. Since then, he's really rehabilitated his image as this 'heart of gold' businessman (he's the one who puts bells and furniture in trees for you to find! he adopted orphans! he donates to charity!), but New Horizons genuinely paints the most devious version of him.
He's successfully privatized settler colonialism: you pay HIM to move to a "deserted island" (which apparently the oceans in the AC world are just full of) and start a colony that he is directly invested in. At best he's running a weird vacation package scam (you arrive on the island with no money and in debt for "using his services"). At worst, he's using you to set up company towns. For god's sake, he literally has his own fake currency that he forces you to use to pay off your debt. But don't worry, he's repackaged it in a way that definitely doesn't sound like an MLM scam: the Nook Mileage Program!
You're no longer just his tenant or his temporary part-timer, you're his business lackey. The entire tutorial section of the game has you spending actual weeks running around completing tasks and doing hard labor to set up his colony. You're even tasked with preparing his properties and finding buyers for them. No, you aren't a tenant anymore. You work for the landlord. You are directly responsible for finding tenants for him. And he doesn't even fucking pay you. Not for setting up town hall and museum, or his nephew's shop –– which is the ONLY store on the entire island that sells necessities –– or bringing KK Slider to town, or helping populate his town. Not a single cent. No, actually, you have to pay HIM to BUY infrastructure like bridges and stairs and park benches. And all the while, he's telling you're the "resident representative"; you get to call the shots! That the reward is the community's progress. That what you're doing is in everyone's best interest (but most importantly, his).
Since NH's release, people have done a lot of legwork to say that Tom Nook isn't a capitalist while the game shows him at his very worst. He owns the only general store in town. You're forced to use a phone that he modified and branded as his own. Buy Nook-branded furniture and merchandise at the self-serve kiosk in the town hall, a governmental building! There's no conflict of interest here!
But hey, if you're tired of being the landlord/business mogul's goon, you can also find work as a deluxe resort home designer for a company that also pays you in their special company currency that can only be used to buy their products instead of a real salary! Because that's what the Animal Crossing franchise needs! More vacation homes!!!
#this is a really long winded way to say i really really really really hate new horizon's storyline and player role#i really hate that not only your house but the entire TOWN. the whole COMMUNITY you're a part of is owed to tom nook's business#i really hate the “vacation getaway package” angle because it shows just how commercialized the entire premise of nh is#and how lost the game is in its original core concept#animal crossing is about the experience of moving to a new town and becoming a part of that community#just to compare: all past ac games have a similar opening#you're on a bus or train or taxi to someplace new. a stranger strikes up a conversation and you get to know them before arriving#new horizons opens with you at customer service desk filling out an client application before a flight.#in prev games working for nook in the tutorial is meant to be demeaning. you want it to be over with so you can actually start living life#but in new horizons working for tom nook IS your life. and it's so rewarding! don't you feel rewarded?#you aren't a person. you aren't a new neighbor. you're tom nook's client. and then his unpaid employee. and the game insists it's fun to be#that's how void the game is#because it's bad enough that a rpg life sim got turned into a sandbox game where you have to build the town yourself#but the only reason why you're building it is because the landlord who you're in debt to TOLD you to build it.#everything is a rewards program! everything is a tour service! be sure to do your daily tasks to earn nook bucks to spend on nook merch!#that really sucks imo.#i mean. the entire game is based around the vacationing industry. of course it all feels fake and temporary. it's only a vacation.#long post#rant#not art#god the fact that your starter villagers can't even decide where to live you have to decide for them#i've never played a game that does the opposite of handholding#where instead it's the PLAYER who has to handhold the npcs through everything. and newsflash!! it's really exhausting and boring

Fans and Creators of Webtoons!
I want to talk about Line Webtoon’s new “Super Like” program and why it sucks for literally everyone.
Tumblr media
What is a “Super Like?”
According to their website, super likes are a new way for webtoon creators to monetize their work. Readers can pay real money to buy a super like for their favorite webtoon, and the creator gets a fraction of that money.
Wait, a fraction? Not all of it?
Yep! Webtoon skims quite a chunk off the top.
30% goes to Webtoon, and then another 30% of that amount goes to the payment processor.
So what do creators get? 49 cents for every dollar their fans try to give them. Literally half.
That’s pretty ludicrous, right?
Interestingly enough, they announced that they had a “tipping system” in the works in the same email they ended the CANVAS creator rewards program (and many comic creators livelihoods)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They said tipping system in their social media posts too
Tumblr media
Obviously this tipping system is referring to super likes right? They say they’re going to do a tipping system, and then this rolls out.
But “tips” are not something that buisinesses can just take a cut of, at least not in the United States. According to the Department of Labor, it is illegal for any amount of tips from customers to go to an employer.
Webtoon is trying to walk back this language, of course. You won’t find the word “tip” anywhere on their website page explaining how it works. But those old social media posts are still up.
This is all pretty scummy
But wait, it gets worse!
They removed the Patreon button at the end of episodes and replaced it with this:
Tumblr media
Yep! That’s right. Webtoon really said “what if we replace the tipping system that already existed with a shittier one where you only get half of it 🥺”
Unsurprisingly, they faced a ton of backlash.
Webtoon was quick to point out that the Patreon button was only removed from the end of episodes and there was still a button on the creator’s homepage. But of course, the end of episodes is where that button matters the most.
Creators know this. Webtoon knows this.
Eventually, after days of continued complaints from creators on social media, Webtoon went on damage control mode and announced that they would be putting the Patreon button back at the end of episodes—
Tumblr media
As of right now (May 11th, 2024) the Patreon button is still not back.
***
So…Super likes are “super totally not a tip.”
But if they aren’t tips…what are they?
Well there’s a bit more to the story of what a super like actually is. After announceing the program, the app updated to reveal a new ranking category on the front page
Tumblr media
When you click on this ranking tab, you can see that there is now both a daily and weekly ranking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you’re a CANVAS creator, you know how difficult and seemingly random it can be to get your comic on the front page of the app—so my immediate worry was that comic creators were going to buy superlikes on their own series to get in this ranking and…
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s already happening.
But why would webtoon even allow creators to buy superlikes for themselves? How does that make sense?
Surely goading desperate creators into buying superlikes can’t be that lucrative, can it?
No. I think there’s another, possibly even worse reason.
Fandom wars
If you’re into music, you probably are aware of how common it is for super fans to make concerted efforts to get their favorite musician to the top of the billboard charts. They coordinate over social media, stream music on loop as soon as an album drops to inflate the numbers, buy albums in bulk to increase sales, all so that they can say their fav is number one. It’s especially common among K-pop fans and swifties
This phenomena is well documented
Fans of Webtoons can be just as ravenous as K-pop, so I think Webtoon is trying to capitalize on this. They want to encourage fandom war and make money. That’s why they have this ranking. Not only can super fans brag about their favorite series topping the charts but they can wear their super like proudly on their reader profile that webtoon will be rolling out soon.
They’re just testing this super like stuff out on CANVAS right now, but once this starts up with originals? Oh. It will be a very profitable, very terrible mess.
(Oh and I mean profitable for webtoon, not creators, in case that wasn’t clear.)
***
Anyway, if you’re a creator, do yourself a favor and don’t enable super likes.
If you’re a fan of a webcomic, just donate to that creators patreon or Ko-Fi to show your support. Don’t give a red cent to webtoon because they did not do any of the work to make the series you love, alright?
Also check out my webtoon haha.

I just remembered that up until 5th grade, all of the sports teams I was in weren't separated by gender. I played basketball and baseball with boys. And we did just fine.
It wasn't until 6th grade when they segregated it by gender. It didn't make sense to me. I was now in softball instead of baseball, because "softball is for girls" and "baseball is for boys" (which confused me bc my dad was on an adult softball team).
Now, my brother's all-male team didn't win a single game. My all-girls team won every single one.
They presented the boys' team with this HUGE trophy, and if you wanted replicas of it, they were $30 each.
My team was presented with a very small trophy. Extras were $5.
That's when I decided gender-segregated sports were bullshit.

What my first (water-soluble) oil painting is teaching me:
Wooden palettes are great if you like splinters and not being able to clean all of the paint out.
It takes forever to dry and I'm going to turn it in for class while it's wet and that's just going to have to be okay.
You need way less black and blue than you think you do and a LOT MORE white than you think. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? Really unclear. Maybe don't take advice from a post about how I've never done this before.
Don't sketch everything out in pencil unless you want it to mix into the paint when you go to paint over it. I haven't had time to figure out underpainting, but do that instead probably? idk.
Green is an incredibly annoying color to mix properly. There are too many shades of green.
Linseed oil has a really weird, specific smell? I'm getting used to it but everything in my life smells like linseed oil right now.
There is dog hair in my painting. Much like point 2, there is nothing that I can do about this, either. It's just part of the painting now.
Don't let your first painting be on an 18x24 canvas. Don't do that to yourself. Go get some of the cheap-ass tiny ones from Michael's. Oh my god. If this wasn't for a grade I wouldn't be putting myself through it.
If you DO end up having to use a large canvas, just splurge on larger paint tubes. Even if the tiny ones have enough paint, you're going to spend the entire process stressed out that you won't have enough paint and it's really just not worth it emotionally.
Art youtubers and how-to blogs talk too much and I personally feel better off just fucking around and finding out at this point.
All that being said, I painted this and I don't hate it! It's a tiny part of a larger painting that I'm much less happy with, but I like this little rectangle of it :) The last time I painted was probably in like ninth grade so this feels like a pretty okay first current-day attempt, all things considered.

Hiii sorry for the ugly ass post but I'm here to be a shill* for this neat lil rewards app that's been genuinely working for me.
(*I ain't getting paid for this shit, I'm just getting referral bonuses ofc <3)
The app is called Mistplay! It's a loyalty program for Android mobile gamers. You simply download mobile games through the Mistplay app and are rewarded with units (points) that can be exchanged for giftcards from places such as Amazon, Target, Walmart, DoorDash, Uber, Taco Bell, Xbox, etc.. - Even Paypal! Here's proof of my most recent exchange
Tumblr media
And here's just to show how frequently I was redeeming $5 giftcards with light grinding (only checking in to do daily tasks and random bonus tasks). The second pic is to show the frequency of which you'll receive units from grinding games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So if you're on Android, you can download Mistplay here and receive 200 units PLUS you'll be rewarded with 100 bonus units for downloading through my link. <3
