Fun fact: the "immortal flower" Sotheby was searching for in her anecdote is likely a red amaranth. Its name comes from the greek word "amarantos," which means "unfading" or "immortal," and it was considered a sacred flower to Artemis.

Below are some pictures of the red amaranth, which fit really well with Sotheby and Sonetto's description of them!

As for "dale cow tongue," I think it refers to gasteria, a type of succulent known with the common name "cow's tongue" or "ox tongue." The plant's leaves typically have these little white dots on them, which might be why arcanists called them "dyed pearl grass."

Lastly, the straight-forward ingredients that they spelled out for us. "Jamaican pepper" is allspice and "the hoof of a four-legged beast" is just horse hoof (very understandable because horses are dangerous and their kicks can kill you).

And that's it. We have successfully ungatekeep Sotheby's potion recipe. Do what you will with this information and go make your friend this potion if they suffer from the Kuchibunbun disease!

Hofweis still on my mind. Imagine what they were like before Vienna or even before Echoes of the Mountain. Semmel said Greta praised Marcus a lot and I just imagine her sending pics of Marcus doing literally anything going "look at my baby/that's my girl" like a proud mama hen, but just more formally coded like "Marcus was able to order a burger by herself, as expected of her diligence" or some shit like that.
Marcus also said that Greta often spoke about Semmelweis too, and that just, lingers at the back of my mind Like was she also praising her and telling stories about their missions or what.
Imagine what their dates missions together were like. Semmel trying to add levity with jokes while Greta is just 🗿, while Greta occasionally makes unintentionally funny comments that actually makes Semmelweis wheeze. Their gallery dates would mostly be filled with sarcasm but I think they'd enjoy a museum date since they yap a lot about history.

Semmelweis’s Anecdote
Semmelweis is sensitive to the sunlight and has burn scars on her neck from exposure. She usually covers it with her hair. Sunlight also gives her a headache and she wears thick shades in public.
Her reflection in mirrors is completely gone at this stage. It doesn't appear in water either.
Her senses are sharper, and her sense of smell is highlighted in this anecdote.
Part of Semmelweis’s vampirism is being unable to repair own blood. If she could, she wouldn’t have to siphon blood from humans (no mentions of blood type or nonhuman sources)
She is a high-profile patient and labeled as very dangerous
Emil is still her bro. She says he’s draining, but you can tell Semmelweis is really fond of him. He visits her during her stay at Laplace Rehab and brings her things. He is a logistics driver now.
She takes special supplements and injections to stave off her thirst for blood.
Vertin signed her discharge papers. Her department really does have all the misfits and dangerous people (affectionate).
Pavia is already part of Vertin’s team when he meets Semmelweis. He handed Vertin his resignation letter but he claims it's been sitting in her desk drawer, so he still carries out orders for her. Vampires and werewolves, classic.
Pavia is very clever and that side of him shines in this anecdote. He is unhinged, but he’s not an idiot.
Pavia's knife skills make an appearance in this anecdote. He likes to play with his prey.
While this could be implied from the voicelines, Pavia shows he has respect for Vertin despite his rough way of talking. He doesn't question his boss and earnestly carries out her orders. I think this also shows Vertin's trust in him. He may be crazy, but like Isolde, Jessica, and the other “quirky” arcanists, he is one of her allies.
Semmelweis calls herself a woman of practicality. She is unwavering and doesn’t make compromises (according to her inner dialogue).
Semmelweis doesn't believe in God, which feels significant in a game with so many religious references. For example, Schneider, the Numbers, and many others all have some sort of system of faith. She is the type who believes in herself and chooses her own destiny. This is why she didn't let the beyond disease or vampirism slow her down.
Semmelweis is very agile.
She likes chocolate 🍫
She and Pavia seem to get along well enough and he calls her “sunshine”, ironic for the vampire. She will happily mess with him and vice versa though. They make a fun duo.
While she fights with her bloodlust, she herself doesn't believe in needless killing, emphasis on needless. She'll do what needs to be done.

People around Dikke consistently say she is acting “against the rules” but I think it’s rather she has her own set of rules she follows by. She’s not hung up on keeping up the social norm—she just wants to find justice, the truth. She’s not against working with “lower” people (her main comrade in her anecdote is a gossipy drinker) nor is she against slightly duplicitous means for justice (she gets the priest drunk as hell to get info out of him) I also find it interesting while she’s serves the desperate and manipulated, she doesn’t skimp out on there own wrongdoings just because they are also victims—she calls the townspeople “both perpetrators and victims” and she’s also against the desecration of corpses by the arcanist, despite her understanding of his reasoning.
She does throw his corpse on the table in front of a mass though so

i read X's anecdote and something just clicked in my brain, i wonder if this was obvious and i was late to the realization, but i was like ... ohhhhhhhhhhh so X's butterfly motif is based on the butterfly effect. because that's sort of his whole thing. he has an obsession with rube goldberg machines, which perform their functions through overly complicated chain reactions that are initially triggered by one thing. isn't this very closely connected to the butterfly effect, where one small event becomes the catalyst for another and so on?
even his own signature resembles a butterfly. interestingly i think this could be tied back to his speech in the anecdote, about how the humans involved in testing a machine essentially are also part of the system, as their involvement is what triggers it and causes it to start. X creates and develops machines, but by testing them, he also becomes part of the machine; at least according to his philosophy. he is the butterfly, the starting point that enables the chain reactions in his machines. and i think that's neat

Aracnist's UDIMO
There's not many conversations about it and what people mostly chalk their UDIMO (animal/item suitcase form) up to is that it represents the arcanist as a person. Like symbolism to their personality.
But I also like how it also reflect how they're raised and what their upbringing is like.
The main ones being people raised under the Foundation, or taken it at a young impressionable age, are all dog UDIMOs. Sonetto, Horrorpedia, Medicine Pocket. Arcanists that are likely taken in by the Foundation before their arcanum has fully manifested. They're all dog UDIMOs so far. (It could as be a jab at Pavlov reference to having experimented on mainly dogs, which is fucked up) And even arcanists like X is a lil lab rat UDIMO.
I find it fascinating that UDIMO has so much more symbolism to them than just their nature as a person, but also reflects their upbringing and overall viewed by a greater narrative.

Snacks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vertin using the extra funds for daily snacks for her people. Now they can enjoy snacks without blowing things up, but I like that also lines up with other things we know about Vertin. She values her people's happiness over all else. She guides people gently instead of acting like the instructors at SPDM, the same way she did with Jessica.
Also this:

She's so soft! A sucker for puppy/innocent eyes like Matilda.
