---
Year 2144.
You fidget nervously with the frayed ends of your black dress. Though the mission was a success, and the target eliminated with no casualties, things did not happen as smoothly as they could have. There is no doubt in your mind this will come up in the report. And so close to reviews too.
Fuck.
Never has riding the elevator to the 47th floor felt longer. You let out a frustrated sigh, leaning your forehead against the cool glass. It does little to sooth you. You focus on the expansive vista of the city. Well deep into the night, the city still thrums with life. A sea of neon lights disappears into the horizon. Smog wafts its way through the tops of buildings, laying itself thickly upon the air. The city disappears as the elevator breaches the clouds.
You push yourself from the glass, facing the doors just as the elevator comes to a stop with a resonant ding.
Your face is neutral and your gait confident as you step forth, making your way through the lobby. Miss Halliday, the concierge, stands ready at the front desk.
“Agent Bloodthorn. A pleasure as always.” Her smile brings you a measure of comfort, sweet honeyed voice a balm to your nerves.
“Ophelia, good evening. Busy tonight?” You make light conversation, as you always do. You hand her the blood coin.
“No busier than usual mam.” She opens her mouth to speak further, but pauses, bringing her hand up to her ear. “Ah. The Handler will see you now. Suite 3 if you please.”
You give her a short nod and set a brisk pace to the suite in question. The sounds of your heels as you walk down the marbled hallway reverb far too loudly for your liking. All too quickly do you stand before the deep mahogany door. Your hand reaches for the golden handle and you enter with one fluid motion. There is no need to knock when you are expected.
Soft gold paints itself along the walls and furnishings from the lit fireplace. The floor to ceiling window at the end brings in the natural silver light of the moon. Your Handler stands at the window, hands clasped behind his back, gazing down at the city below; it would be beautiful on a cloudless night.
“Agent! A resounding success tonight my dear!” He turns to you, arms spread in congratulatory fashion.
“T-thank you, Handler!” Your body stiffens involuntarily at the praise, and you nervously pick at your ruined garment.
“Come now, [Y/N]; even after all these years, you’re still at it with the formalities with me. I’ve known you for nearly a decade and a half now child; I practically raised you!” He laughs heartily as he teases you.
“Sorry James, force of habit, haha…”
He invites you to sit in front of him; a singular leather chair awaits you. As you sit, so too does he, a large wooden desk separating you two. Fluidly he retrieves two crystal classes, a bottle of dark liquid you’re sure you won’t like. He pours you half what he pours himself, wordlessly placing the drink closer to you.
You nod in thanks, taking the glass in hand. With practiced movement, you gently swirl the liquid, giving it an experimental sniff. Where you take a small sip, James downs the contents in one gulp. You let out a small cough and return to the glass to the desk.
“On to business then.” He pulls out several manila folders. “Despite what you might think, the reason we called you in Agent, isn’t to discuss your mission tonight.” You sit up straight when he says this, leaning forward as you watch him unwind one folder.
“A new contract came in while you were out. And as far as I’m concerned, you’ll want to be a part of this.”
He places the open folder in front of you. Your eyes skim over the words. Avatar Program. Pandora.
“This is…”
“Correct. Word through the network is your brother Tom’s been scouted by Grace Augustine herself. Should start his training next year.”
You had heard as much. Sweet Tom spoke animatedly about Grace and her work. He was so excited to start training, and even more excited to put his PhDs to work on the alien world.
“As it were, you won’t be needing any physical training. With your natural prowess, we believe you will be able to master piloting your avatar in no time; gain experience on the go as it were.”
“M-my own avatar? You’re giving me one of these?? Don’t they cost, billions, to make?!” You can’t help raising your voice, but you saw the numbers as you skimmed the file. Those were a lot of zeroes.
James smirks at you with a shake of the head.
“Leave the financial worrying to me Agent; that’s not your job.”
You let out a defeated sigh, but acquiesce nonetheless. You read further. The file goes on about the local clan of natives, the Omatikaya. It covers the basics of their governing structure, touching lightly on the culture. It speaks of the relationship formed by Grace, but also their inherent distrust of the RDA.
James places another folder in front of you. There is a polaroid; two blurry figures, one circled in red. You can at least make out that they are natives, both men, presumably.
“Your mission agent, is to eliminate this man.” He taps an index finger on the circled figure.
“Who is that?” You tilt your head as you try to make out the features of the man.
“That my dear, is Eytukan; the Clan Leader.”

In Costa Rica and Latvia today, the Atlantic Council is hosting its 360/OS Summit at RightsCon Costa Rica and NATO’s Riga StratCom. Among other things, the influential think tank will be previewing its “Task Force for a Trustworthy Future Web” report, which they hope will “lay the groundwork for stronger cross-sectoral ideation and action” and “facilitate collaboration now between the expanding community dedicated to understanding and protecting trust and safety.”
In human terms, conference attendees are discussing how best to stay on-brand by presenting the Censorship-Industrial Complex as a human rights initiative, and as #TwitterFiles documents show, they have the juice to pull it off.
EngageMedia (which I co-founded and was the long-time Executive Director) co-organized RightsCon in Manila in 2015, and I personally oversaw a lot of the preparations. That looks like a big mistake. I now believe RightsCon represents everything that has gone wrong in the digital rights field. Specifically, it represents the capture of a once-vibrant movement by corporate and government interests, and a broader shift towards anti-liberal and authoritarian solutions to online challenges. I left EngageMedia on good terms, but now have no formal relationship.
In honor of this week’s RightsCon and 360/OS Summit, we dug into the #TwitterFiles to revisit the integration of the Atlantic Council’s anti-disinformation arm, the Digital Forensic Research Labs (DFRLab), while also highlighting its relationship with weapons manufacturers, Big Oil, Big Tech, and others who fund the NATO-aligned think tank.
The Atlantic Council is unique among “non-governmental” organizations thanks to its lavish support from governments and the energy, finance, and weapons sectors. It’s been a key player in the development of the “anti-disinformation” sector from the beginning. It wasn’t an accident when its DFRLab was chosen in 2018 to help Facebook “monitor for misinformation and foreign interference,” after the platform came under intense congressional scrutiny as a supposed unwitting participant in a Russian influence campaign. Press uniformly described DFRLab as an independent actor that would merely “improve security,” and it was left to media watchdog FAIR to point out that the Council was and is “dead center in what former President Obama’s deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes called ‘the blob.’”
What’s “the blob”? FAIR described it as “Washington’s bipartisan foreign-policy consensus,” but thanks to the Twitter Files, we can give a more comprehensive portrait. In the runup to the 360/OS event in that same year, 2018, Graham Brookie of the Atlantic Council boasted to Twitter executives that the attendees would include the crème de la crème of international influence, people he explained resided at the “no-kidding decision-maker level”:
Similar correspondence to and from DFRLab and Twitter outlined early efforts to bring together as partners groups that traditionally served as watchdogs of one another. Perhaps more even than the World Economic Forum meetings at Davos or gatherings of the Aspen Institute in the US, the Atlantic Council 360/OS confabs are as expansive a portrait of the Censorship-Industrial Complex as we’ve found collected in one place.
In October 2018, DFRLab was instrumental in helping Facebook identify accounts for what became known as “the purge,” a first set of deletions of sites accused of “coordinated inauthentic behavior.” Facebook in its announcement of these removals said it was taking steps against accounts created to “stir up political debate,” and the October 2018 “purge” indeed included the likes of Punk Rock Libertarians, Cop Block, and Right Wing News, among others. Even the progressive Reverb Press, founded by a relatively mainstream progressive named James Reader, found his site zapped after years of pouring thousands of dollars a month into Facebook marketing tools. “That’s what sticks in my craw. We tried to do everything they suggested,” Reader said then. “But now, everything I worked for all those years is dead.”
In the years since, DFRLab has become the central coordination node in the Censorship Industrial Complex as well as a key protagonist in the Election Integrity Partnership and the Virality Project. Its high-profile role at RightsCon, the biggest civil society digital rights event on the calendar, should concern human rights and free expression activists.
According to their London 2019 event “360/OS brings together journalists, activists, innovators, and leaders from around the world as part of our grassroots digital solidarity movement fighting for objective truth as a foundation of democracy.” Their Digital Sherlocks program aims to “identify, expose, and explain disinformation.” But DRFLabs are more Inspector Gadget (or double agents) than Sherlock Holmes. The Twitter Files reveal DFRLab labeled as “disinformation” content that often turned out to be correct, that they participated in disinformation campaigns and the suppression of “true” information, and that they lead the coordination of a host of actors who do the same.
Twitter Files #17 showed how DFRLab sent Twitter more than 40,000 names of alleged BJP (India’s ruling nationalist party) accounts that they suggested be taken down. DFRLab said it suspected these were “paid employees or possibly volunteers.” However as Racket’s Matt Taibbi noted, “the list was full of ordinary Americans, many with no connection to India and no clue about Indian politics.” Twitter recognized there was little illegitimate about them, resulting in DFRLab pulling the project and cutting ties with the researcher.
Twitter Files #19 further revealed DFRLab was a core partner in the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP), which “came together in June of 2020 at the encouragement of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA” in order to “fill the gaps legally” that government couldn’t. As a result, there are serious questions as to whether the EIP violated the US First Amendment.
DFRLab was also a core partner on the Virality Project, which pushed its seven Big Tech partners to censor “stories of true vaccine side-effects.” The Stanford Internet Observatory, which led the project, is now being sued by the New Civil Liberties Alliance for its censorship of “online support groups catering to those injured by Covid vaccines.” Debate as to the frequency of serious adverse events is ongoing, however. The German health minister put it at 1 in 10,000, while others claim it is higher.
The Virality Project sought to suppress any public safety signals at all. The Stanford Internet Observatory is also at the moment reportedly resisting a House Judiciary Committee subpoena into its activities.
TwitterFiles #20 revealed some of the Digital Forensic Lab’s 2018 360/0S events, which brought together military leaders, human rights organizations, the Huffington Post, Facebook and Twitter, Edelman (the world’s biggest PR firm), the head of the Munich Security Conference, the head of the World Economic Forum (Borge Brende) a former President, Prime Minister and CIA head, intel front BellingCat and future Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, all to combat “disinformation.” We can now reveal more.
Introducing the Atlantic Council
The Atlantic Council is a NATO-aligned think tank established in 1961. Its board of directors and advisory board are a Who’s Who of corporate, intelligence and military power, including:
James Clapper – former Director of National Intelligence whose tenure included overseeing the NSA during the time of the Snowden leaks. Asked whether intelligence officials collect data on Americans Clapper responded “No, sir,” and, “Not wittingly.” Clapper also coordinated intelligence community activity through the early stages of Russiagate, and his office authored a key January 2017 report concluding that Russians interfered in 2016 to help Donald Trump. Clapper has been a 360/OS attendee.
Stephen Hadley, United States National Security Advisor from 2005 to 2009 (also a 360/OS attendee)
Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State who oversaw the carpet bombing of Vietnam, among other crimes against humanity
Pfizer CEO Anthony Bourla
Stephen A. Schwarzman, Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder, The Blackstone Group
Meta’s President for Global Affairs, Nick Clegg
Richard Edelman, CEO of the world’s largest PR firm (and 360/OS attendee)
The Rt. Hon. Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, Former Secretary General of NATO
Ambassador Robert B. Zoellick, Former President of the World Bank
Leon Panetta, former US Secretary of Defense & CIA Director. Panetta oversaw the US’s massive growth in drone strikes.
John F. W. Rogers. Goldman Sachs Secretary of the Board
Chuck Hagel, chairman of the Council, sits on the board of Chevron and is also a former US Secretary of Defence.
The Atlantic Council raised $70 million in 2022, $25 million of which came from corporate interests. Among the biggest donors were: the US Departments of Defense State, Goldman Sachs, the Rockefeller Foundation, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, Google, Crescent Petroleum, Chevron, Lockheed Martin, General Atomics, Meta, Blackstone, Apple, BP, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, Raytheon, ExxonMobil, Shell, Twitter, and many more. Ukraine’s scandal-ridden energy company, Burisma, whose links to Hunter Biden were suppressed by the August 2020 table-top exercise coordinated by the Aspen Institute, also made a contribution. You can view the full 2022 “honor roll” by clicking here.
The Atlantic Council is the Establishment, though many suffer from the delusion that in putting on a “Digital Sherlock” cape, they’re somehow with the rebel alliance. The opposite is true. The Atlantic Council and DFRLab don’t hide their militarist affiliations. This week’s OS/360 event at RightsCon Costa Rica runs together with a 360/OS at NATO’s Riga StratCom Dialogue, which DFRLab note they have “worked closely with” “since 2016.”
The Birth of the Digital Forensic Research Lab
DFRLab was founded in 2016, and has been a major catalyst in expanding the “anti-disinformation” industry. Among non-governmental entities, perhaps only the Aspen Institute comes close to matching the scope, scale and funding power of DFRLab. DFRLab claims to chart “the evolution of disinformation and other online and technological harms, especially as they relate to the DFRLab’s leadership role in establishing shared definitions, frameworks, and mitigation practices.”
Almost $7 million of the Atlantic Council’s $61 million spent last year went to the DRFLabs, according to their 2022 annual financial report. Through its fellowship program, it has incubated leading figures in the “disinformation” field. Richard Stengel, the first director of the Global Engagement Center (GEC), was a fellow. GEC is an interagency group “within” the State Department (also a funder of the Atlantic Council), whose initial partners included the FBI, DHS, NSA, CIA, DARPA, Special Operations Command (SOCOM), and others. GEC is now a major funder of DFRLab and a frequent partner:
In this video, Stengel says, “I’m not against propaganda. Every country does it, they have to do it to their own population, and I don’t think it’s that awful.”
Stengel was true to his word, and apart from DFRLab, the GEC funded the Global Disinformation Index, which set out to demonetize conservative media outlets it claimed were “disinformation.” (See 37. in the censorship list) He thought the now-disgraced Hamilton68 was “fantastic.” In total, GEC funded 39 organizations in 2017. Despite Freedom of Information requests, only 3 have been made public to date. Roughly $78 million of GEC’s initial $100 million budget outlay for fiscal year 2017 came from the Pentagon, though the budgetary burden has shifted more toward the State Department in the years since.
The Global Engagement Center was established in the last year of Barack Obama’s presidency, via a combination of an executive order and a bipartisan congressional appropriation, led by Ohio Republican Rob Portman and Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy. The GEC was and remains virtually unknown, but reporting in the Twitter Files and by outlets like the Washington Examiner have revealed it to be a significant financial and logistical supporter of “anti-disinformation” causes.
Though tasked by Obama with countering “foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining United States national security interests,” its money has repeatedly worked its way back in the direction of policing domestic content, with Gabe Kaminsky’s Examiner reports on the GDI providing the most graphic example.
GEC frequently sent lists of “disinformation agents to Twitter.” Yoel Roth, former head of Trust and Safety referred to one list as a “total crock.” Roth is now a member of DFRLab’s Task Force for a Trustworthy Future Web. Let’s hope he brings more trust than Stengel. You can read more on GEC’s funding here.
Other DFRLab luminaries include Simon Clark, Chairman of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (a UK “anti-disinformation” outfit that aggressively deplatforms dissidents), Ben Nimmo (previously a NATO press officer, then of Graphika (EIP and the Virality Project partners) and now Facebook’s Global Threat Intelligence Lead), and Eliot Higgins of Bellingcat. Bellingcat has an ominous reputation, which it’s earned in numerous ways, including its funding by the National Endowment for Democracy (see Glenn Greenwald’s recent report and Aaron Maté’s here). Most recently, Bellingcat assisted in the arrest of the 21-year-old Pentagon leaker, further speeding up the abandonment of the Pentagon Papers Principal where the media protected, rather than persecuted, leakers. Bellingcat was part of 360/OS backroom meetings with former intel chiefs, the head of Davos and the Munich security conference among many others, as we will see soon.
As noted in the introduction, DFRLab itself has made several wrong calls on “disinformation.” In one report they highlighted “outright false narratives,” which focused mainly on the notion that Covid was an engineered bioweapon, but lumped in the “unverified” claim Covid was the “result of a lab accident.” A lab accident is now the preferred hypothesis of the US Department of Energy, the FBI, and many others. To the DFRLab it was “disinformation” and a “conspiracy theory.”
The Election Integrity Partnership and the Virality Project
DFRLab were core partners on two of the most influential “anti-disinformation” initiatives of recent times.
The Virality Project built on the EIP and had partnerships with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Google, TikTok and more to combat vaccine “misinformation.” Stanford and DFRLab partnered with the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, Graphika, NYU Tandon School of Engineering and Center for Social Media and Politics, and the National Congress on Citizenship. Through a shared Jira ticketing system they connected these Big Tech platforms together, with Graphika using sophisticated AI to surveil the online conversation at scale in order to catch “misinformation” troublemakers.
VP went far beyond any kind of misinformation remit, most infamously recommending to their Big Tech partners that they consider “true stories of vaccine side effects” as “standard misinformation on your platform.”
A Virality Project partner called the Algorithmic Transparency Initiative (a project of the National Congress on Citizenship) went further. Their Junkipedia initiative sought to address “problematic content” via the “automated collection of data” from “closed messaging apps,” and by building a Stasi-like “civic listening corps,” which in recent years has taken on a truly sinister-sounding mission. The current incarnation might as well be called “SnitchCorps,” as “volunteers have an opportunity to join a guided monitoring shift to actively participate in monitoring topics that disrupt communities”:
Garret Graff, who oversaw the Aspen Hunter Biden table-top exercise, was chairman of that same National Congress on Citizenship when they collaborated on the Virality Project. Both EIP and VP were led by Renee DiResta of the Stanford Internet Observatory, a former CIA fellow who engineered the now disgraced New Knowledge initiative, which developed fake Russian bots to discredit a 2016 Alabama senate race candidate, as acknowledged by the Washington Post. You can read Racket’s previous work on the Virality Project here.
DFRLab are the elite of the “anti-disinformation” elite. They work closely with a wide range of actors who have participated in actual disinformation initiatives. Here they’re invited to an elite Twitter group set up by Nick Pickles of “anti-disinformation” luminaries First Draft, also participants in the Hunter Biden laptop tabletop, and the Alliance for Security Democracy, part of the RussiaGate Hamilton68 disinformation operation.
360/OS
The 360/OS event marries this tarnished record with the financial, political, military, NGO, academic and intelligence elite. Some of this is visible through publicly available materials. Twitter Files however reveal the behind the scenes, including closed door, off-the-record meetings.
“I’ve just arrived in Kyiv” Brookie notes in 2017, as he seeks to line up a meeting with Public Policy Director Nick Pickles as they discuss Twitter providing a USD $150K contribution to OS/360 (seemingly secured), and to garner high level Twitter participation.
Pickles is visiting DC and Brookie suggests he also meet with the GEC and former FBI agent Clint Watts of Hamilton 68 renown. “Happy to make those connections,” he chimes.
360/OS events are elite and expensive — $1 million according to Brookie — so closer collaboration with Twitter, especially in the form of funding, is a high priority.
Twitter offers $150,000:
When Brookie mentions the attendees at the “no-kidding decision maker level” he isn’t kidding. Parallel to the 360/OS public program is the much more important off-the-record meeting of “decision makers ranging from the C-Suite to the Situation Room.” Here, he is explicit about a convening of military and financial power. Vanguard 25 is presented as a way to “create a discreet and honest way to close the information gap on challenges like disinformation between key decision makers from government, tech, and media.”
The document boasts of its high-level participants:
More are revealed in email exchanges, including Madeleine Albright and the head of the WEF:
They go on to list a bizarre mishmash of media leaders, intelligence officials, and current or former heads of state:
It appears Germany’s Angela Merkel was out of reach in the end, but many of the others attended this behind the scenes meeting on “disinformation.” Who are they?
Matthias Dopfner – CEO and 22% owner of German media empire Axel Springer SE, the biggest media publishing firm in Europe
Borge Brende – head of the World Economic Forum and former Norwegian foreign minister
Toomas Hendrick Ilves – former President of Estonia who co-chairs the World Economic Forum’s Global Futures Council on Blockchain Technology. Hendrick is also a fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (where the Stanford Internet Observatory is housed) and is on the advisory council of the Alliance for Securing Democracy, of Hamilton 68 renown.
Chris Sacca – billionaire venture capitalist
Mounir Mahjoubi – previously Digital Manager for President Macron’s presidential campaign, and former Chairman of the French Digital Council
Reid Hoffman – billionaire and Linkedin co-founder
Ev Williams – Former CEO of Twitter and on the Twitter board at the time
Kara Swisher – New York Times opinion writer, who founded Vox Media Recode
Wolfgang Ischinger - Head of the Munich Security Conference
Aleksander Kwasniewski – Former President of Poland. Led Poland into NATO and the EU.
Richard Edelman – CEO of the largest PR company in the world
Elliot Shrage – previously Vice-President of Public Policy at Facebook (DFRLab had election integrity projects with Facebook)
Lydia Polgreen – Huffington Post Editor in Chief
Jim Clapper – former US Director of National Intelligence
Maria Ressa – co-founder of Rappler and soon to be winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
JK Rowling was also invited to give an award, though appears she didn’t make it in the end:
Why would such a group all gather specifically around the question of “disinformation”? Is disinformation truly at such a level that it requires bringing together the world’s most popular author with military and intelligence leaders, the world’s biggest PR company, journalists, billionaires, Big Tech and more? Or is this work to build the case that there is a disinformation crisis, to then justify the creation of a massive infrastructure for censorship? A glimpse of the agenda offers clues:
Here the head of the most important military and intelligence conference in the world (Munich) sits down in a closed door meeting with a former Secretary of State and the Executive Vice-Chair of the Atlantic Council.
Which is followed by a closed door session with the Editor-in Chief of the now-defunct Huffington Post and peace-maker Maria Ressa who presented to the same group of military, intelligence, corporate and other elites. Is the role of a journalist and Nobel laureate to work behind closed doors with militarists and billionaires, or to hold them to account?
At 2022’s OS/360 at RightsCon Ressa conducted a softball interview on disinformation with current US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In testimony last April 2023, former CIA deputy director Michael Morrell stated that Blinken “set in motion the events that led to the issuance of the public statement” by more than 50 former intelligence officials that the Hunter Biden laptop had “all the classic earmarks of a Russia information operation.”
The Twitter Files also revealed that in August 2020 the Aspen Institute organized a table-top exercise to practice how best to respond to a “hack and leak” of a Hunter Biden laptop. The laptop only came to light however two months later. In attendance was First Draft (now the Information Futures Lab), the New York Times, Washington Post, Rolling Stone, CNN, Yahoo! News, Facebook, Twitter and more. Here, DFRLab head Graham Brookie speaks with the Aspen Institute’s Garret Graff, who coordinated the Hunter Biden tabletop exercise.
After it turned out the Hunter Biden laptop was real, and the disinformation operation was more appropriately described as having been led by the likes of Blinken and the Aspen Institute. The appropriate response is apparently for RightsCon, DFRLab, Blinken and Ressa to put on a nice forum to promote these figures as “anti-disinformation” leaders.
youtube
Former DFRLab fellow and intel front Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins is also invited to the closed door sessions with a former head of the CIA, a former Prime Minister and a President. How do you keep power accountable when you are in the same cozy club? This theme runs throughout. Bellingcat is featured heavily at the public sessions also:
Higgins has a unique way of expressing himself online, given the DFRLab emphasis on striking out against divisiveness:
Would this pass RightsCon’s code of conduct? If not, he appears to be good enough for DFRLab to promote.
On the public side, we see Amnesty International participating to further collapse the distinction between those who are meant to hold power to account, and the powerful themselves. The Iraq war gave us embedded journalists, and the “anti-disinformation” field gives us embedded digital rights activists.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Chris Krebs also joined the closed door session. Krebs was Co-Chair of the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder. Other members included Prince Harry, the Virality Project’s Alex Stamos (Stanford Internet Observatory) and Kate Starbird (University of Washington and previous 360/OS participant), Katie Couric, and more. Craig Newmark attended as an observer.
Meanwhile Renee DiResta, former CIA fellow and Stanford Internet Observatory Research Director, presented with the former Prime Minister of Sweden. This was years before she would launch the Virality Project, and take on the bugbear of “true stories of vaccine side effects.”
The President of the Atlantic Council participated in an “off-the-record, “ behind closed doors conversation on “trust” with the CEO of the world’s biggest PR firm, Edelman.
“Public relations” and “trust” may well be opposites, and trust is being destroyed not by the disinformation street crime that these groups claim to target, but by the disinformation corporate crime protected by, or in some cases created by these same people. Disinformation is real, but its biggest purveyors are governments and powerful corporate interests.
DFRLab and RightsCon show just how far the capture of civil society by elite interests has come. Again, I made a mistake helping to co-organize RightsCon in 2015. The jumping in bed with the government and Big Tech was arguably there in 2015, though to a much lesser degree. It now partners with militarists in the form of the Atlantic Council and is an enabler of the “disinformation” grift that is so deeply impacting freedom of speech and expression.
The air-gaps that should separate civil society, media, military, billionaires, intelligence and government have collapsed, and many of these actors have formed a new alliance to advance their shared interests. If weapons manufacturers funding human rights is considered legitimate then where is the red line? Effectively, there is none.
This collapse however has also been pushed by funders, who have been proactive in asking NGOs to collaborate more with Big Tech and government - something I successfully resisted for my almost 18 years at EngageMedia, critically RightsCon was the only time I let my guard down.
The RightsCon sponsor matrix wouldn’t be out of place at NASCAR:
This is the equivalent of hosting a Climate Change conference sponsored by Shell, BP, Chevron, and ExxonMobil. How do you keep power accountable when Big Tech pays your wage? The “let’s all work together” approach has failed. The weakest partner, civil society, got captured and we lost. Many more lost their way and have acquiesced to and often enabled much of the new censorship regime.
A renewed and much more independent digital rights movement, with a strong commitment to freedom of expression, is well overdue.
Note: A previous version of this article mistook Blackstone for Blackwater. This has been corrected.

Filipino Dream-pop and Shoegaze Bands in the Dark
Dream-pop and Shoegaze are subgenres of alternative rock, internationally, the pioneers are from UK; Cocteau Twins and Slowdive. Their music is known for their synth sounds and reverberated guitars which makes their music sound so dreamy, melancholic, and to some it is even described as "nostalgic". It is a very powerful new genre that captivates people in the music scenes these days.
It is often said that these genres are an acquired taste, these genres are like the black coffees in the field of music. It will sound like jazz but heavier with fuzzes and reverb almost like drowning you in them and yet the audience feel so alive. The pioneers in these genres in the Philippines are Megumi Acorda (Dream-pop) 2018, Cinema Lumiere (Dream-pop) 2020, Bedtime Television (Dream-pop) 2018, Ozzga (Shoegaze) 2018, Polar Lows (Shoegaze) 2019, & Eggboy (Shoegaze) 1998. These bands bloom underground up until now but these bands deserve more ears to swarm into. It is about time that their music gets heard on concert grounds.
If you want to witness the strange effect of these new genres, places to visit and support are: Mows (Quezon City), Saguijo (Makati), 70's & Bistro (Quezon City). Currently, there are a lot of young collectives keeping the scene alive like 'The Flying Lugaw', 'United Cassettes' and 'Genjitsu Stargazing Society'. From my experience, traveling from Naga to Manila to listen to their music was all worth it, you would get shocked at how friendly the musicians are and how good they are at performing. When I heard Megumi Acorda play their songs, despite the music being melancholic, the crowd was swaying in sync and you would feel so heavy and good at the same time just listening. The songs they composed are mastered and produced by either themselves or these young collectives which makes it even more amazing; such talents should be hit with spotlight.
Here are my top 5 Dream-pop and Shoegaze favorites:
If They Come // Megumi Acorda Dreamcatcher // Cinéma Lumière Shiver // Ozzga Never Stayed Too Long // Polar Lows Ouija Bored // Bedtime Television
All these songs are available on Spotify and BandCamp.

Let's Skip to the Wedding is the first album that Idris Vicuña has released as Eyedress since relocating from Manila to Los Angeles. But the undeniable charm that brimmed over on his 2018 album Sensitive G is present here as well. The production still has that lo-fi quality favored by many modern bedroom pop artists with a sound like something recorded to a boombox, the freshness, intimacy and immediacy of the recording more than making up for something that sounds more professionally produced. The jangle-y guitar, the minimal keyboard melodies, the thin but well articulated bass lines and vocals like something recorded using the reverb of a bathroom make these songs resonate surprisingly strong with the album's main thematic arc. It examines the subject of a serious romance and the personal pitfalls and obstacles to making and keeping that connection and sustaining that relationship beyond the honeymoon phase, literally and figuratively, to create something both people want long term. Musically it rides the line between pop and post-punk. “I Don't Wanna Be Your Friend” is reminiscent of Blank Dogs and Crystal Stilts in it's fragile sense of menace. At other times one can't help but draw comparison to the music of Black Marble and inverting the appeal of nostalgia as memories can seem to both color the past in positive emotional hues as well as bring past trauma to the forefront of your mind. In fact there is the song “Trauma” that expresses that state of mind you can get to where you feel like you need to flee from any situation where your emotions can be scarred and what is supposed to be a pleasant experience can be ruined by self-sabotage.
Eyedress brings the listener through one's dark places of insecurity back to a focus on a love that lifts you out of the accumulated low points and commands your attention where it belongs. It is a gentle reminder of proper priorities in one's emotional existence. Later in the album the music still features the same lo-fi production as at the beginning but the mood and style of the songs is more R&B and psychedelic funk and its languid tones and pace drift the mind past the ghosts that haunt it to a place of emotional and spiritual bliss that is the state that being in love long term is supposed to take you. In this cynical era that could be dismissed as corny and unrealistic but this album hearkens back to 80s R&B and a deep sincerity about the nature of love that could be easily dismissed as vapid but Vicuña manages to work those gnarled kinks of the psyche out and lulls us into an unmistakable sense of hope that this love thing is actually going to work out. www.eyedress.bandcamp.com TOM MURPHY

JANUARY 2021 Noise Artists' playlist
And in No particular order:
From ZEUG, a Metalgaze band from Berlin, that we had in a previous playlist, comes an amazing music video:
On the 9th of July zeug packed up their gear and for two days moved into Wasserspeicher – a vast water reservoir built in the middle of the 19th century in the heart of Berlin. It was here where their upcoming EP 'Grounded' was recorded – without any additional production effects, the stone cavern (32 meters in diameter and 8 meters high ceiling) captured a natural reverb decay of 5 seconds.
For the 'Duende' film each participant of the crew was given almost limitless freedom of expression, with the band acting as musical mediators, creating a sonic foundations for the performers. Therefore, what started as just the second zeug's EP release, merged into a complex synthetic piece of art.
As its core ideals zeug praise freedom of expression and the power of improvisation. Throughout this process, time and space took over and became the main influencers, which solidified the music pieces. By allowing the acoustics of Wasserspeicher play a significant role in the sound and treating the space as an instrument in itself - amplifying the collossal sound of zeug - (much to the delight of the local Prenzlauer Berg residents) zeug unintentionally set the architectural and historical context free to shape the music itself.
The image is superb and the dancers and musician’s perfomance is first class.

EMPEROR OF ICE CREAM, a four band members, now based in Cork, Waterford (Ireland), New York and Amsterdam, have worked on adding the finishing touches to the album remotely during the Covid Pandemic, while also inviting fans to be a part of the new video for ‘Everyone Looks So Fine’ by sending clips of themselves for inclusion. The track is released on FIFA Records with the album due to follow later.
CINEMA LUMIERE are Pop music alchemists from Manila, Philippines. This is their latest song. Beautiful Dream Pop.
The 4 members of PULSE PARK first met some time ago on an arctic expedition in Qikiqtaaluk/Canada and started learning their instruments during the long polar nights.
These were ukuleles that they had traded dry fruits for at the Inuit. After introducing a breeding program for bowhead whales the band decided to sing about this experience. Songs about the cold, the dark, cod-liver oil and dinky arctic hares. This is excellent indie music.
Choux (US-CAN) is an indie dream pop duo led by lead vocalist Lizzie Carolan based in Montreal, and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Gatesmith based in Minneapolis. They are best known for their lush soundscapes and ethereal melodies that carry listeners to another dimension. If you love Cocteau Twins you will enjoy this very much. Really good album.
GRAYWAVE are a Dreampop band from the UK. they released ‘Like Heaven’ in December. It is a very good song, reminiscent of some of the best Shoegaze sounds. Judge by yourself.
A beautiful ballad, that is not without reminding of the CRANES (and an other of my favourite bands, the SIGH) from KALI MA AND THE GARLANDS OF ARMS, from Pensylvania (USA).
STACKING PENNIES is from Denver, USA. They just released an eerie atomspheric LP, from which this is extracted.
GHOST FROG are a space rock band from Portland (USA). They play heavy psychedelic stoner rock that combines doomy riffs with punk energy, while also evoking themes derived from sci-fi/ horror film and literature as well as all things paranormal. Really nice sound and collection of songs.
LONELY ME, from RIO in Brazil are doing Lo-fi Shoegaze with a fuzzy sound. Interesting DIY sound.

Mason Jones remembers High Rise
Mason Jones with Nanjo circa 1996
Sometime around 1990 a friend who was a DJ on KPFA made me a tape of a band familiar to me only through a couple of songs on the Dead Tech compilation LP: High Rise. I'd heard far more about them at the time than by them, since both of their LPs were hopelessly out of print and in any case only a handful of copies ever made it out of their home country of Japan. The tape included both albums plus a few extra tracks, and if I hadn't known something about the band I would have figured he'd messed up the transfer since everything was so blown-out. I'd later learn that bassist/singer Nanjo Asahito was infamous for his mastering approach, which could be summed up as: make everything as loud as possible and compress the hell out of it.
High Rise is a difficult band to describe, because on paper it might not be anything special. They're a standard rock trio of guitar, bass, and drums, playing a heavy blend of psychedelic and biker rock. Take the early Nuggets-type fuzz rock, add MC5-style aggression, Ramones attitude, and you're getting there, except there are so many missing ingredients. Narita's guitar playing is like the most out-there wah-freak, free-form, chaotic lead guitar you've ever heard, times ten. Nanjo's muscular bass lines drive the songs forward during even the most anarchic moments, and his vocals, shadowy and reverbed, blend like another instrument. If there's a part of the band that's more prosaic it's the drums, perhaps partly due to the band's constantly-changing drummer slot, and partly due to the mixes, which often bury the drums.
At the time I hadn't yet come across the legendary Rallizes, aka Les Rallizes Denudes, aka Hadaka no Rallizes, perhaps the ur-psych band of Japan. Formed in the late 60s, their approach to free-form rock, with a murky sensibility and anarchic guitar, influenced scores of later bands, including High Rise. But High Rise took that inspiration and focused it through a motorcycle-punk filter that perfectly balanced that anarchy with control — the guitar may go insane, but it's controlled insanity.
The first time I toured Japan, in the early 1990s, we visited Modern Music, the Tokyo store run by PSF Records owner Hideo Ikeezumi. I was amazed to find a copy of the first High Rise LP, but not having a spare $300 on me I sadly wasn't able to bring it home. The following year PSF reissued the band's second album on CD, but that first one has yet to be properly reissued, though a couple of bootlegs (or at least questionable releases) exist.
A couple of years later I organized a show for Angel'in Heavy Syrup (a terrific psych band from Osaka) in Berkeley, and after sound check a Japanese fellow dressed in all-black, wearing sunglasses inside the club, came up to me and a friend. He had a mini-disc player with him, and handed me some headphones, saying "Listen!" I couldn't help but do so, and I heard some really good blown-out rock not unlike High Rise. I nodded, and said "Great", but that's about all the communication we managed at the time. I didn't know it at the time, but that was Nanjo Asahito.
Shortly thereafter I was back in Tokyo playing some shows again, and we were at La Mama, a club in Shibuya. A friend and I walked down the street to grab an iced coffee from one of Tokyo's omnipresent vending machines, and on the way back a very excited Nanjo — again in black with his shades on at night — waylaid us. Nanjo handed me a large manila envelope, and said "You release!" My meagre Japanese was worse than his English, but I opened the envelope and figured out that it had a master DAT tape and artwork for a CD by a band called Mainliner. That also happened to be the name of a song on High Rise's album Dispersion. Nanjo apparently wanted me to release the CD on my label, Charnel Music.
I nodded and said "Maybe I can release it", but Nanjo just smiled and said something like "You will", confident that I'd like it. Once I got home and listened to it I understood why he was so sure, since it was amazing stuff, but that was also very like Nanjo. I learned later that he considered the band to be the second version of High Rise, one that could tour since High Rise's guitarist Narita had a day job that didn't allow him much time off. The guitarist of Mainliner was an incredible maniac named Makoto Kawabata, whose own band Acid Mothers Temple released a CD the next year on PSF Records, completing the circle.
Mainliner came and toured the U.S. after the release of Mellow Out, and again in 1997 after Mainliner Sonic. Then in 1998 Nanjo came back to play some shows under other band names — he had a way back then of creating "bands" almost on the fly, based on a vague concept. In San Francisco he enlisted me and the drummer of my band at the time (SubArachnoid Space) for a recording session and live show. The names Mystic Sensorium and Ohkami no Jikan were used for this visit and the follow-up in 1999.
Shortly thereafter I was talking with another friend who mentioned "the cool releases with Nanjo". Surprise! I hadn't known that Nanjo released recordings from our shows on CDR via his own La Musica label, but I shouldn't have been surprised. He was well-known for recording and releasing almost everything, and not bothering to ask anyone for permission. It was just assumed, I think, that anything might show up somewhere at some point. But it did take me a little while to track down copies of the releases!
It wasn't long after that, though, that Nanjo essentially vanished. After 2001 he moved away from Tokyo, and disappeared from the scene for unknown reasons (at least I never heard why). Word is he may have re-emerged recently, and we can hope so. There was a time when Nanjo Asahito was essentially creating his own scene through sheer energy, with dozens of releases a year of phenomenal psychedelic music ranging from distorto-rock to gorgeous ritualistic atmospheres. We'd all be better off with him at work again.
I hope the long-overdue reissue this year of High Rise II on Black Editions will reach a new audience, and drill the eardrums of appreciative listeners. Perhaps a proper edition of the band's first album will follow, and who knows, other Nanjo work that deserves a wider audience as well. Hint, hint.

No Rome Enlists Indie All-Stars beabadoobee and Jay Som For the Dynamic “Hurry Home”
Filipino musician Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez began writing songs at a young age under the moniker isayhiyousay. Gomez, who now performs as No Rome, self-released a series of EPs which soon caught the eye of UK tastemaker Jamie Oborne. Cue No Rome subsequently signing with Oborne’s Dirty Hit label, joining the ranks of artists like Rina Sawayama, The 1975, and The Japanese House.
Following a notable collaboration with alternative R&B savant Dijon, the Manila-born, London-based artist has enlisted the help of Jay Som and labelmate beabadoobee for his new single, “Hurry Home.”
“Hurry Home” is a stripped-down ode to complicated relationships. Lush with heavily reverbed vocals and eccentric alt-pop instrumentals, the track continues No Rome’s impressive streak of hard-hitting singles. Gomez sings the chorus and produced the track with the help of The 1975’s George Daniel. beabadoobee starts off the song with her trademark subdued lilt, singing “We don’t talk too much / I need constant touch / Maybe something’s wrong.”
The highlight of this stellar collaboration comes in the form of Jay Som’s contribution in the second verse. Adorned with triumphant trumpet fanfare intricately laid over an acoustic guitar and quiet wind chimes, Som’s contribution is wrapped in an all-too familiar air of wistfulness and nostalgia.
With its nearly hushed, emotive vocal delivery, “Hurry Home” paints a vivid picture of a late-night voicemail, the kind you leave after you’ve had one too many drinks and wind up thinking about what could have been.
Listen to “Hurry Home” below:

Not What You Expected
I started this story during season 2, and here we are, right after season 3, and I’m STILL UPDATING IT! Not sure if that means I’m lazy, or this is a ridiculously long ass story, but either way, here's a new chapter for you everybody! Enjoy!
“Miss Warren,” Jay Garrick addressed her respectfully, as though she weren’t someone who didn’t belong in this universe, using a name that belonged to a dead woman, “I think you and I have a few things to discuss.”
Amy stared at him for a moment, contemplating whether this seemingly upstanding hero of a man was worth the conversation, or if she were better off blasting her way away from him, and cutting her losses. I had seemed logical at the time, contacting the CCPD for any information they had on Zoom and his henchmen, after all whatever information they did have would be far more organised and detailed than whatever she could cobble together from the internet. But impersonating a dead woman was a tricky thing, and even with her Felicity Smoak degree in hacking, stealing her doppelganger’s identity had proved to be a pointless endeavour the moment she saw CSI Barry Allen, and he had recognised her.
One hour previous…
Barry Allen prided himself on his record keeping. His filing cabinets were the most well organised in the entire precinct, if there was something that needed to be found, he was the one who would find it. It came with the territory of being a CSI, finding things was his job, from crime scene, to lab, to court room, he could dig through the clutter and find the important information. Barry’s pride in his work had recently been bossted ten fold, when the infamous Hero of Central City, The Crimson Comet himself, Jay Garrick had entrusted him specifically to find information for him. The task was a simple one, dig up all he could on a woman named Amy Warren, and report all he found to Garrick to aid in his hero work. Investigating people was literally his day job, Barry could do it in his sleep, but this search was rapidly turning into a rabbit hole of peculiarity, and Barry was beginning to wonder if he should continue with it.
His initial search for the name ‘Amy Warren’ had been a bust, nobody by that name was living in Central City, or any of it’s surrounding cities for that matter. There were several residents with the sername Warren, and a handful of women named Amy, but none of them matched both criteria, so he switched tactics. Amy was a short name, short names were often nicknames, used in place of their longer tongue twisting counterparts, so Barry began to fliter his search by names that could possibly be shortened to Amy for some reason or another. That got him a total of seven results, three were women names Amelia, two of which had relocated to other cities by now, two more were women named Amaya, which he admitted was a bit of a stretch so he discounted them soon after weeding them out. The last two were almost instantly discounted as well, as both of the were dead, but Barry noticed something about the very last listing, that gave him pause.
Amaryllis Warren had died the night of the Star Labs incident, her body was found near that of a male near her age, a colleague of hers by the name Francisco Ramon. The picture that came up with her obituary was from her Highschool graduation, but her death was not the first occasion to land her in the papers. A scientific achievement award had been given to her in college, she’d earned it as part of a team project for something or another, Barry hadn’t bothered to read too much into the article, it was the picture that he had been interested in. Four smiling young students in white lab coats, the two in the middle holding a trophy together, Amaryllis on the left, and Francisco Ramon on the right. The image was old, and his face was far more easy going than what the CCPD had on file for him, but Barry saw him and realized instantly, the man holding the trophy beside Amaryllis, was Reverb. That single piece of information alone, set Barry’s investigative senses tingling, but as he dug deeper, he realized that Amarylis Warren wasn’t as dead as she appeared to be on paper. Following the legal trail of Francisco Ramon’s lawsuit against Star Labs, he was able to find a current address, a posh penthouse apartment, paid for with Star Labs money, merely a few blocks away in the Central City Palisades.
Deeper and deeper down the rabbit hold Barry went, too caught up in the absurdity of what he was finding to bother contacting his superiors for a search warrant, he hacked into the building’s security feed right there in his office. The current feed didn’t provide him with much, just a view of passers by, and a few interior hallways with little foot traffic in them. But due to advances in technology, and changes in laws that Barry remembered, he knew that apartment complexes like the Palisades, stored their security camera footage for a minimum of one year, and so that was where Barry dug next. Days of footage sped across his screen, sparse glimpses of residents coming and going flickering like blips in the tape. Then suddenly, the images he was looking for were there, two people, one following the other entering the lobby of the building. The one in front, Barry recognized as Reverb, and after squinting for a moment, Barry’s mouth dropped open in utter surprise, as he recognized the features of the woman with him from her graduation photo, Amaryllis Warren.
By now, she had been dead for years, the coronor’s report listed her as being dead on scene, electrocuted to the point of cardiac failure, her funeral was part of a memorial service held by Star Labs after the incident...but there she was, living, walking, and willingly following one of Central City’s most wanted meta criminals into his apartment building. It wasn’t possible, it was ludicrous, it was like a story out of a television show unfolding in real life, like some absurd murder mystery dinner theater. How was she alive? How did she so thoroughly fake her own death? And why had she done it, only to be so careless by being caught on camera? Barry could already guess why Reverb hadn’t bothered with hiding his face, he had a reputation for being cocky, he had likely walked in and out of that apartment building a thousand times, maybe even looked for the cameras just to make a statement of his dominance as a meta. But Amaryllis Warren, she was a ghost, she didn’t exist anymore, why show herself now?
Jay’s words resurfaced in his mind, he’d said she might have information that could help him fight Zoom. The pieces started falling into place quite clearly then, Barry watched her follow Reverb into the building, her head turning to take in her surroundings, she was a double agent. Barry compiled the report using all his professional preciseness, doing his best te keep it devoid of personal opinion or bias, even going so far as to print it out on his personal office letterhead. He was nearly twitching with excitement as he straightened the papers, and tucked them away in a manila envelope, a proud smile on his face as he grabbed his jacket and briefcase, ready to set out and meet with The Crimson Comet. He exited his office with a skip in his step, greeting two officers enthusiastically as he made his way down the stairs. But halfway down, his gaze was lifted by the sound of the elevator’s doors sliding open, and his briefcase nearly dropped from his hand as he recognized the woman who exited it with hesitant steps. Amaryllis Warren was here.
“Ma’am,” a passing officer approached her curiously, “is there something you need help with?”
Barry didn’t even bother trying to remember the officer’s name, his long gangly legs were already running him down the stairs towards her. “I’ve got it!” he cried, stumbling to a halt beside the confused officer and her, “woo, excuse me officer, I’ll take care of this woman, she’s here to see me.” He smiled, hoping his story was believable, even as Amaryllis’ eyes went wide when she saw him.
“Oh, my apologies Barry,” the officer apologized, “I’ll leave you to it then.”
Barry thanked them politely, before turning back to Amaryllis with wide eyes of his own. “Miss Warren,” he greeted her, extending his hand to her eagerly, “it’s a pleasure to meet you, our uh...mutual acquaintance, Mr. Garrick, he told me about you – or um, rather he mentioned you, and had me...look into you,” he shook his head realizing that sounded less than welcoming, “the point is, I’m happy to help you in any way I can, I am at your service.”
Amaryllis stared at him as though he’d grown a second head. The hand he’d extended to her was left un-shaken, her eyes flitting over his face as her face went pale, ironically she was the one who looked like she’d seen a ghost. “Barry?” she spoke his name in a near whisper, her hand finally slowly reaching out to take his, “Barry Allen?”
Barry nodded, slightly confused by her odd behavior, “Yes ma’am, CSI Barry Allen, at your service,” he shook her hand and smiled, “has uh...Mr. Garrick mentioned me?” he asked her hopefully, a little thrill of excitement at the idea of Jay Garrick speaking highly of him.
Amaryllis frowned at him. “Mr. Garrick?” she asked, the hesitation her body language held when she first disembarked the elevator back again.
Barry nodded again, “Well…yes, Jay Garrick? He’s….well he’s...” the gears of his mind began to grind as a realization forced its way to the surface, “you do know who he is, don’t you?” The hand Barry still held in his twitched, and a glimmer of fear shone in Amaryllis eyes as they began to take in her surroundings. She was looking for an escape. Barry cursed himself for assuming he knew what was going on, his entire background of CSI training screaming at him to never make conclusions without all the evidence. His hand clasped tighter around hers, desperately hoping he could hold her by it if she made a run for it. “Miss Warren, I realize that I may have just made an incredible mistake in mentioning Mr. Garrick, but I assure you that my offer to help you still stands, and if you would just follow me up to my lab, I’m sure we could-”
There was a sudden gust of air, and the unmistakeable sound of electricity crackling through the air, sent Barry’s head swiveling to find The Crimson Comet himself standing beside him. “Mr. Allen,” Jay greeted him politely, “I see you’ve found Miss Warren for me.” Barry opened his mouth to speak, but his brain was firing too rapidly to decide what to say. Amaryllis stared at Jay in disbelief, tugging her hand free of Barry’s grip as she looked Jay up and down, taking in his striking red uniform. “Miss Warren,” Jay Garrick addressed her respectfully, as though she weren’t someone who didn’t belong in this universe, using a name that belonged to a dead woman, “I think you and I have a few things to discuss.”

moon mask’s relapse EP is a new-wave valentine for the perpetually heartbroken, stream it in full now
moon mask’s visceral lyricism might not generate the most marketable candy heart slogans, but it sure does hit home when paired with hazy new-wave instrumentation. The Manila, Philippines-based dream-pop quartet — Consisting of lead-singer/producer Zeon Gomez, guitarist Felipe, bassist Dean Dela Cruz, and drummer Julio Del Prado — has officially mailed out its sophomore EP, relapse, today via ZOOM LENS. The 5-track release is a Valentine’s card addressed to the perpetually heartbroken. Synth leads and reverb-drenched guitar chords twinkle with romanticism, only obscured by a pervasive sense of despair. “relapse is about revisiting old pains — the ones I never really got to talk about for my older material” says Gomez. These pains include feelings of inadequacy, spoiled prom dates, and overcoming angst through long, aimless drives — a stark contrast to uptempo beats and major scale progressions. relapse is a light at the end the tunnel; a kiss-off printed on a black candy heart. Purchase relapse here, and stream the EP (which has garnered pre-release buzz from CNN and Spotify’s “Weekend Hangout” playlist) below while polishing off the last few chocolates in your sampler box. Raspberry filling never tasted so bittersweet. relapse EP tracklisting: 01. boulevard 02. enough 03. promenade 04. risa 05. daytime boyfriend http://j.mp/2EbJRCS

Manila Killa & Mansionair Remind You To Check On Your Friends With “Wake Up Call”
Manila Killa and Sydney-based trio Mansionair have teamed up to deliver their stellar new track, “Wake Up Call.” Though the song conveys multiple interpretations, “Wake Up Call” carries a deep message that may hit a little too close to home for some.
Laced with ambient sounds and budding drums patterns, “Wake Up Call” is a dark track that recounts moments of memories and red flags. The synths are sharp and hypnotic while the vocals resonate with heavy delays and hints of reverb, providing that sense of dark nostalgia. With lyrics like “Maybe once, maybe twice, / I saw darkness in your eyes” and “Dive into the deep end, / I’m losing a good friend,” you can’t help but think of the times you saw all the signs a friend was losing sight of themselves. For a moment, you are stuck in denial because you’d never think they’d be the ones to fall, and, even though you possess the power to save them, you’re frozen in doubt.
“Wake Up Call” is a tragic tune carrying the idea that you can always do more. We go through life seeing the world in peril around us, and, although one person can’t fix everything, it’s important to check on your loved ones. Tragedy can strike at any moment, so remember to tell your friends and family how much they are loved.
On a lighter note, revisit Mansionair’s stunning “All Eyes On” performance in NYC below:
