Happy 79th anniversary to the Railway Series!
Here's my second of two entries for this year's art collab.
I tried my best to make this resemble the style of real UK newspapers from the 30s 😁 A video slideshow of all the collab entries can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA4RJZz1mkc

It's true! Look here!😂
I think, as a fandom, sleep on the fact that Awdry thought of industrial engines as; feral, may need domesticating and a little fowl-mouthed.
And that he included Percy in that category.

Yea, gotta agree here. Not because they’re engines, but because of how they were written. He gave even coaches personalities, and made them beloved characters. They never appeared to feel as though they were lower class than the engines, despite what detractors may think. (Some folks read too much into ANYTHING when so willed.) nia and Rebecca are boring add ons. They could be more interesting, but they’re not. The good reverend would have surely done better.

Aw. Poor girl.😢
Smile, Dolly!
“The Old Lady” was what they called her back in the day. The 1900s had turbulent days and hardships for the Talyllyn Railway, but despite the odds, they had overcome it all.
But all that hard work, all their struggles, all their successions, overshadowed by their twin railway; The Skarloey. As a result of the reverend’s books, their railway became popular as it was a place where fans could celebrate their siblings and have the engines dress up as their celebrity counterparts. For the Talyllyn engines, it was uncomfortable, especially when guests just pretended they were someone they weren’t, even if it wasn’t the Extravaganza week.

Their voices are ignored.
Tumblr media
They simply have to smile.
Tumblr media
Sometimes, they can’t help but envy their siblings.

Is a little bit of recognition too much to ask?

when I asked Sir Handel his opinions on Railway Series Book Club he just called me a bitch and beat me up.

Next year you SHOULD throw bricks at him.

While we only have 2 paintings that Payne did while doing his work for Wilbert's second volume.
After some successful attempt at emulating his style, I was able to land on a perfect hybrid for all of the first 5 of 8 Famous Engines between Kenney's and Payne's Edward, whilst keeping his design akin to his later appearances.

Thomas fun fact: In Rodborough (the village that Awdry retired to in the 1960s) in the church there is a stained glass window of Thomas and Awdry!

Happy 79th anniversary to the Railway Series! Here's my first of two entries to our annual RWS art collab; an illustration from the book 'Henry the Green Engine'! It's one of my favourite lines from James, so unsympathetic 😄 A video slideshow of all the collab entries can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA4RJZz1mkc
