How could you sit there eating vegetarian sushi and look so pretty?

Miguel was embellished, looking at your straightened hair and band graphic tee. You were talking about some movie you wanted to see with him while eating a roll of sweat potato, cream cheese, and other ingredients.

“Amor, are you listening?” How he could not feel embarrassed when you’re giving him a sweet smile.

“Sorry, I got distracted” You arch your brow, playfully.

“By what? Is there a pretty waitress behind me?” He rolls his eyes as you giggle, leaning to eat from his noddles.

“Actually, I was getting lost on how good you look today.” Now he chuckles after seeing you so flustered and avoiding his eyes with a mouth full of sushi.

“Ay, pero qué bonita” You swear your cheeks are going to explode because of Miguel and his constant flattering.

You won’t believe it's been a week since you two started dating.

“Ya!” You try to stop him from laughing at your blushed face.

“Okay pues, bonita” Both of you smile at each other. And even the people around you who are eating seem con motioned by the cuteness of your lover’s antics for you.

“So… this winter… Are you teaching me how to drive finally?” he eyed you briefly but ended up nodding.

“I guess so. Just… we’ll get you a junk car to start” You rolled your eyes. Of course, he didn’t trust you after telling him of that little accident from last year.

“Despite that, I’m okay. I want a vintage rav4. That was my childhood car, well… my dad’s but” he chuckled. There were a lot of moments where he found you being so cute and adorable.

“Sorry… I’m still learning to shut up.”

“No, hermosa. Never shut up” and there was his silly smirk that had you on your knees. In that instance, he unconsciously showed all the love he felt for you.

“I warned you. But… What are you doing on Halloween night?” Jess was hosting a retro Halloween-themed party.

You already had your vintage bat costume with shimmers and see-through fabric.

“Not sure yet…” his answer disappointed you a little. Of course, the relationship was new, but you really wanted to spend Halloween with him.

“Oh. That’s okay.” And then, your answer disappointed him a little. He was debating whether to propose something to you or not.

“You have plans…” you shrugged, finishing your sushi roll.

“Not sure yet” Your smile was honest. But only you knew that your reply was a way to protect yourself. You trusted your boyfriend, but you weren’t ready for an early first fight or related.

Neither of you proposed something to do together. Maybe it wasn’t the best decision…

Halloween day and you didn’t talk with Miguel. At least you knew he had a long mission and since you were done with your part, you left without having an opportunity to exchange words with him. He had been talking with a woman. Once you suggested him to hang out with him that night in the folkloric earth you almost got burned like a medieval witch.

Talking about witches, no magic tonight.

That didn’t stop you from attending Jess’s party.

“Girl, look at you…” Jess greeted dressed in a seductive mummy costume. Her baby was attached to her hip and also dressed as a little mummy.

“Hey, you’re holding a baby, Jessica.” She giggles after realizing what you meant.

“Yeah, and you showed up here dressed like that” Although your costume wasn’t as sexy as hers, it was very noticeable.

“What can I say?” Both of you laugh and finally, you enter the house.

“Drinks are in the yard, most of the adults are there. For the kids, fried stuff and pizza” You can see most of your younger friends there, playing games and eating.

“I think I’m in the mood for the mezcal and fried lasagna.”

“You got it!” As Jess leaves his baby crawling towards Gwen, who’s dressed like a zombie, you follow the host of the party outside. Promising yourself to go back inside and greet your friends.

“Oh my god! Peter!” You greet shocked. Peter was in an elegant Dracula costume. He looked very nice, in contrast to his usual disheveled looks at the Spider Society’s HQ.

“You showered!” The other guests laugh, and you keep greeting other coworkers and friends.

“Very funny. But you? Where’s your silly boyfriend I know you want to impress?”

“Not here,” you say laughing. And Ben is offering the mezcal you oh so desperately needed.

To be honest, you missed him. But you were a little proud and stubborn to admit it. Also, while you sunk all the possible jealousy about seeing Miguel and that spider woman talking earlier, you were a little afraid. Because deep inside you knew there would be some miscommunication problems with Miguel.

“Get comfortable. Peter was about to tell us his most spooky experience” Jess says appearing with a beer in her hand.

“Ready for it…” With that, the first round of alcohol began.

An hour later you are dancing with Margo and Pavitr. Then, every word Peter and Ben said made you laugh so hard. You think they’ve never been funnier than that night. And that was a lot to say. Especially from Peter who was naturally funny as hell.

You really wanted to pee. But you had been laughing so hard with Jess, Hobie, Ben and Peter. You are near tearing from the bad jokes and sassy comments floating around.

“Time up, time up. I’m gonna pee if I don’t go now.” Jess tells you where the bathroom is, and you start your way inside. And then you turn to the kitchen, your eyes wide open as you spot your boyfriend.

Miguel is there, all dressed in black, drinking a beer and laughing with Anya Corazón.

Jealousy makes your blood boil. But suddenly sadness floods you. The disappointment beats the anger, triggered by the high amount of alcohol in your system. Your brain knew it was silly and immature. But since the day of the sushi date, you had that little torn stuck, where Miguel wasn’t adding you completely to his plans.

As soon as Miguel spots you with teary eyes, you turn around, directly to the house door.

“Hey, wait up…” Miguel stops you a few steps away from the entrance.

“Are…Are you crying?” He asks when you finally face him.

You couldn’t help it. It was the insecurity of being with such a great and difficult person. So, you sigh, eyes all teary and a red nose tip too.

“Well. I had a really good time. And the last thing I expected on my way to the bathroom was finding my boyfriend drinking beers and laughing closely with a girl.” He sighs, his tall and broad figure covering your whole figure from any possible guest trying to see what is happening.

You looked very beautiful. He wasn’t even sure if Jess invited you, but how could have been so stupid? Of course, she would.

“I didn’t know you were coming” he admits. Calm tone, and a neutral face, but he avoids your eyes.

You look at him reluctantly. So, since he didn’t know he could be giggling and shit with girls? Nah, no way.

“Yeah… And that’s the fucking problem” you attack with a broken voice, leaving him there standing alone. Avoiding a fight.

He’s about to follow you. But he stays there, not even understanding what happened. But he questioned if it was over. A struck strike him in the heart. If he unintentionally hurt you, he would be fully disappointed with himself. Not on Halloween night. Not one day before a special one for him.

He would do things right.

But for the rest of the night, you don’t leave his head and thoughts in peace.

First, Jess…

Hey, why you left the party? Please call me, I need to know what happened.

Babe, Miguel told me what happened last night. He’s an asshole, but he loves you so much. Please talk to him.

Then Peter.

My dear friend, I’m sorry for what happened yesterday. We were having such a great time. Listen, Miguel will try to talk to you. Tomorrow is a hard day for him. We know our boy, he’s not good with words and feelings, but he cares for you a lot. I talked to him all night after you left. He wasn’t right, but you have to talk to him, he loves you.

It’s gonna be fine, honey. Jess, me, the kids, we’re here for you. Love you!

And finally, Miguel.

Mi niña hermosa, I literally have no words to explain what happened last night. I just need you to know that… I love you. We need to talk about this, please.

Please, y/n. Tomorrow is Día de muertos and… I don’t want us to spend the day with misunderstandings.

Oh God…

Miguel sounded like a big teddy bear, saying lovely words to soothe you. It made your heart flutter, and it increased your hangover.

“Fuck…” you whispered, rubbing your eyes.

Flashes start hitting you. Having a great night, then seeing Miguel with Anya, and basically leaving him alone. How idiot you were.

You could have talked like a grown adult instead of throwing a tantrum and crying.

But you felt weird since he avoided telling you his plans for Halloween.

And finally, it hit you.

Maybe Miguel didn’t tell you anything because the following day of Halloween was Día de Muertos. A special day for him to remember his kid. He barely talked about Gabriella though. But the brief moments where he mentioned her to you, were unmatched. He missed his little girl. And you couldn’t imagine the pain of losing a daughter. You couldn’t leave Miguel alone. Or at least without an apology.

What a terrible girlfriend.

However, that didn’t excuse him from his poor communication skills.

You would do things right.

…

From both sides of the door, there's nervousness rushing.

You tug the hem of your skirt, then you hurry to brush your hair and wait. Miguel’s heart pounds as he suspects it’s you who’s knocking on the door. Since he rarely received visitors. So, when he opens the door, he finds you looking extremely shy and blushed.

“I’m sorry. I acted so immature, and I know today is a special day for you. I brought some things for you to use. And I’ll leave, I just wanted you-”

He pulls you in a tight hug, making you shut up. Around three minutes pass and he still holds you in his giant arms. You feel there are no more words needed as if the hug was a mutual apology.

Miguel digs his nose into your hair, smelling your shampoo and he thanks life for getting you two back together.

“I just wanted you here today with me…” he mumbles on your lips, before diving back and kissing your lips.

Finally, without breaking the kiss, he closes the door and leads you to the living room. His sneaky hands twirl you to make it easy. As your fingers get lost through his soft hair, he leans closer, holding your tiny waist compared to his hands. Your permission is when he stops his hands from traveling further, but you make him hold your hips. So, it’s enough. He kisses you with a smile on his face. Until you end up playing on his grey couch.

To you, is a bed. To Miguel, is his couch.

You know you’ll get your humbling moment. An impossible blush to miss appears and makes your boyfriend smirk.

“You don’t deserve it” his voice sounds deeper, and it sends shivers through your whole body and soul. Maybe you were guiltier than him, but you were so stubborn to act all submissive now. The best you could do was to take and savor what he decided to offer.

“But I’ll give it to you anyways…” your hands pull his shoulders to smash his lips again. Miguel knows he can proceed once his eyes are closed. So, he starts venturing his lips across your jaw and neck. You let out the first moan, and you’re glad you decided to appear on his doorstep.

The bed is wet. Not much, but there are some water spots that feel warm and cold at the same time. There’s also your empty wine glass when you turn left. Nueva York is setting for the sunset. You smile, stretching and savoring the pleasure of the little nap you took. Then Miguel comes in, in some damn grey sweats and his naked chest, your smile grows. And you can’t help but think you want him again.

Thank God you’re naked.

“You just woke up and you’re already looking that pretty?” you giggle at his comment. Your hair must be curled thanks to the shower. To Miguel, you look adorable, all his and only his.

“Put some shirt on…” he chuckled, cheekily.

“What? Am I turning you on again, bonita?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” you hide under the covers laughing recklessly. And your heart pounds faster as you know he’ll likely scare you or something.

He does, and you have to scream. As you pop your head, you see him laughing.

“You just came out of the shower?” You ask him. Miguel probably washed your hair and took you out of the tub. Since you know you fell asleep as he washed your body in the tub.

“Not really. I just grabbed some things for the altar” his comment reminds you of what you’re celebrating that day. And suddenly you remember everything that led you to be there naked in his bed, and your heart warms.

“I’m sorry” you honestly say.

Miguel tilts his head, arms crossed, making him look broader than ever.

“I said it was okay, nena” he knows you want to say more. You make space for him to sit at the edge of the bed.

“Yeah, you said it. But… I want this relationship to succeed. I want to know we won’t go through this again.” He sighs, but quickly smiles, caressing your leg.

“It won’t happen again. Something bothers us, we talk” and just like that, you have your massive boyfriend kissing you all over. He said Anya was an old recruit, she was a good friend and lately, she rarely spent time on the HQ, so Miguel was happy to talk to her. And you blushed out of embarrassment.

“Can we go cooking now?” Miguel nods. After letting you go, he threw a big sweatshirt at you. It was dark brown and covered you from chest to knees.

“It’s been a while since I used the stove and oven…”

“Doesn’t matter, dear” As Miguel follows you across his apartment, he can’t help but notice how small you look in his place. And he reminds himself how weird you look in Nueva York, generally. You don’t belong to any specific earth. Chaos magic witches barely existed, and they never glitched.

You haven’t used magic in the last days since your last mission. Not even you had time to remember. Since the Halloween party, your mind had spun over your friends, Halloween, Miguel, her friend Anya, and your jealousy.

But soon he forgets again about it because you are eager to make pan de muerto with him.

“You can help me with the cream. We’re making a liquor and cheese filling” his mouth watered. Since he left his childhood home. He never did pan de muerto again.

His mother used to bake with some alcohol too, but the fillings weren’t very popular at the time. And now, being able to retake that tradition with you was special to him. His little girl would be very happy to his dad smiling again. Miguel mixes everything together and with a little spoon, he hands it to you.

“Is it good?” He asks shyly, you open your mouth, and he gives you to taste the filling.

“Wow, this is amazing, Miguel. I love it!” He smiles proudly. You are about to dip your finger in the cream to taste it again, but your man snatched it away.

“Hey!” He soothes your discontent with a new kiss. And you’re beyond shocked about how often Miguel was kissing you now. You let his tongue in, and between the rest of the cream and Miguel’s incredible kissing abilities, you had to moan again.

“Okay, pause. Or else we won’t finish” you explain, returning to the oven to see how the flour was getting puffy and the smell of orange filled the air of the kitchen.

Nueva York was welcoming the sunset early as the time was about to change in early November. So, the kitchen tiles reflect an interesting pink and orange illumination. Seeing Miguel placing the cream on a piping bag with the sunset in the window in front of him, makes you happy. The air is dry, and your nose feels dry too. There’s a warm wind that stumbles off the windows, startling you often, but it’s perfect.

You are in love.

…

“And… done!” You say lighting one last candle, you go back with Miguel to hug his waist and appreciate the art you two made. It’s a fucsia, orange, purple, and gold Altar de Muertos.

“This is perfect” Miguel admits. The altar has everything. The food; paletas payaso, bubulubus and picafresas. Then there’s a big plate of polvorones, flan, arroz con leche and agua de horchata. The candles make the pan de muerto shine because of the sugar. And the cempasúchil petals made everything look even prettier.

On the top shelf, Gabriella O’Hara’s picture was placed. She had a pink sweatshirt and her soccer headband. But her big smile and light blush are what made Miguel smile widely. He truly missed her. But he always knew having her on that earth wasn’t meant to be.

And now, he knew that thanks to that… he found you.

And who knows? Maybe Miguel could have a kid of his own in earth-928 someday with you. He had nothing to fear again. He knew you two were meant to fall into pieces together, just like it had happened. And Miguel also knew how proud Gabriella was of him. So, he was celebrating her short life. He would apologize every year from now on. But he would also use November 1st to remember how much he loved her.

Just like he did with you.

“Te amo mucho, preciosa” You raise your head to look at him in shock.

It was the first I love you. And he said it. But your emotion and love make you quickly answer.

“Yo también, Miguel” his head tilts to bump with yours in the most adorable way.

He walks away to grab something from the side of the altar. When he turns, he gives you a gorgeous bouquet of cempasúchil.

“I saved this for you” he scratches the back of his head, nervously.

“How did you know I wanted one?” It’s your smile that makes his days. And he intends to be a constant reason in the long term.

“I just knew. And when we were doing the altar… Fue tu carita la que te delató, bonita” Giggles and a blush erupt from you.

“Thanks, corazón” you thank him shyly.

Thankfully the sound of the oven makes you widen your eyes.

“OH! The rest of the pan” you squeal excitedly, almost running to the kitchen.

He follows you chuckling.

Soon, there are two plates of azulejos on the table, with two pieces of pan de muerto filled with liquor and cream cheese. Some candles are there too and the cempasúchil bouquet is now in water. As the pan starts to get less warm, you are softly kissing Miguel again. And for the first time in years, both of you are so happy to be celebrating Día de Muertos.

It wasn’t about death anymore. It was about love.

I watched a bit less than 100 movies last year but the standout was definitely Bound, that I somehow completely missed, 10/10 no notes let's go lesbians

I only played all the way through two triple AAA games (FF7 Rebirth and Veilguard), both of them I really enjoyed despite some big flaws, but my three favorite games of the year were 100XResist, Mouthwashing and Sorry We're Closed (or what if Silent Hill was hot and gay?). Big year for retro horror indie games, luckily that's right up my alley lmao

Brat was definitely my most listened to album of the year, but only because The Cure's latest album came out in November, an instant classic

I didn't see a lot of shows this year (but I saw Mitski! Finally!) but my favorite one was Kalandra, a Norwegian band I've loved for a while now, nothing beats an intimate concert in a small venue, I danced and cried a lot lol

I read a bunch of comics and mangas and not enough novels, but I really enjoyed the Nigerian novel Vagabonds by Eloghosa Osunde, it's gay and hopeful as hell, something I really needed this year

As for TV shows, Interview with the Vampire is still the best thing on TV right now, and season 2 was phenomenal

Really looking forward to more of everything this year 💗

An interesting headcanon on the theme of Alastor joing the Vees, by choice or force and where he would fitin.

Conceptualise them calling him Vaudeville, a subtle retro theme while being true to his chosen medium. And they give him /make himtake on Vaudible, a podcast slash news media slash audiobook site whereinhe is the primary vocalisation.

And it is as insidiously pervasive as you can imagine. Picture a world where every television or internet video features Vox or his chosen presentors. Everything illicit from porn sites to sketchy magazines trace back to the reins in Valentinos hands. Anything you read on the internet or in a fave trends magazine was chosen and curated by Velvette.

And the, oh and then... theres a genial, oddly friendly but slightly old fashioned voice that charms and disarms you in every podcast, every nonvideo based news broadcast, every book you buy except possibly the most erotic filth that is read by a bevy of valentinos workers because no contract can make the former radio demon read some of the truly terrible things like 53 shades of red aloud.

That voice is your day to day, your source for information and also a trusted influence. Same as vox is trustworthy simply because he is always there in the public consciousness, always in the public eye... Alastor would be in the public's ear, their mind, their thoughts.

So what if the information starts to slant in a certain direction so subtly people find themselves riled up by things that never mattered before, vocalising hate or unity for topics they had been i different to, the spoken word is as powerful as it is invisible.

And that is only for the common man, imagine what a force an overlords sway holds.

And, to add in an additional thought, i have a slight headcanon that Alastor has a hypnotic voice/power of suggestion ability that is the equal to Vox's hypnotic eye/gaze of subjugation.

Imagine, then, someone you have no qualms letting into your home on your tv and your phone and you literature and now your every podcast or book or radio news bulletin... and two of them can use the ability to layer suggestions over your thoughts. One so gently you never realise anything is happening until the tiny strands of persuasion have you in their grasp like a fly in a web.

You will do anything, say anything, believe anything... and most importantly, buy anything they tell you. And they dont have to say a word.

The Vees would be the most terrifying quartet in hell simply because there would be no way to escape their reach.

It could be a fascinating idea to tease out.

oh there are SO MANY. youtube is the #1 most used app on my phone, i think. i have it on CONSTANTLY, like.. when i'm not watching some film or a tv show, i'm watching youtube eh

my youtube experience mainly consists of what the algorithm decides i might like (which is almost always correct)... so i don't have many fave channels but there are a few i watch on a regular basis: linus tech tips (+ all the other channels they have), mattkc (tech stuff, programming & retro gaming), hutts (streamer/let's player), taliesin & evitel (WoW content creators) and a couple of german channels (mainly doktorfroid, rezo, tomatolix and julien bam)

Curiouser and Curiouser...

It’s not a problem for Cater if you prefer to be indoors! He knows he can get in touch with you anywhere, anytime, with just a quick text or video call. (”Call me, beep me if you wanna reach me!” Cater had told you when he first slipped you his number.) In fact, he’s often the first one to wish you good morning and the last person to say good night!

Being as trendy and pop culture savvy as he is, Cater is great at recommending new shows and games that suit your tastes. His tendency is to gravitate to what’s already popular, but chances are that he’ll discover the occasional retro gem every so often (with some help from Lilia).

Cater sometimes likes to pop up to surprise you and crash at your place! Those visits are the the perfect opportunities for a cozy anime marathon date or a night of playing co-op games together (though if it’s a game he isn’t good at, he’ll just watch and give cheery commentary instead). Whatever it is you’re in the mood for, he’s happy to oblige.

Cater will often talk about your current faves!! (Little do you know, they’re actually cleverly devised ploys to get you out of your room for some cute dates.) Look, there’s a pop-up store with merch from that manga you like! Oh, and that cafe’s doing a collab with the anime you just finished! You should definitely come check them out with him~

“Ne, don’t you ever get tired of seeing your room as the background for every pic? Let’s shake things up a little 🎵 I know this great place that’s not too far from here, and I think you’ll love it!” Cater throws you a wink, and coaxes you to follow him. “There’s just some stuff you can’t experience from looking at a screen—so let’s experience it together!”

While he has nothing against your hobbies and interests, it goes without saying that Vil disapproves of your lifestyle. He insists that you need Vitamin D, fresh air, and the chance to stretch your limbs in order to have a healthy life... whether you agree with his sentiments or not!

He assumes the role of the “guardian” in the relationship, often reminding you to look after yourself in spite of being a shut-in. Vil tells you to correct your posture so you aren’t slouching or “shrimping” with a hunched back, and to give your eyes a rest from staring at a computer or TV screen for hours on end.

Occasionally, Vil drags you out of your room “for your own good”, and he won’t take any “ifs, ands, or buts” about it! Of course, he’ll take care the proper precautions first—slathering you in sunscreen and asking for you to hand over your phone and other mobile gaming devices. “No distractions,” Vil chides, slipping your devices into his bag, “I want your attention to be focused solely on me.”

Though he is stern, he’s not entirely heartless. Vil is well aware of your interests, and while he doesn’t necessarily understand them, he does what he can to support you in small ways. He’ll take you to book stores, game stores, and shops that sell anime merch, allowing you to browse to your heart’s content. Sometimes Vil will even assemble looks that pay tribute to your favorite characters or shows—a makeup look with iconic colors, or an outfit that resembles a protagonist’s clothes.

“Take your time looking. We’re in no rush. This outing isn’t meant to be a stressful one. My only intention was for you to get out of that dreadfully stuffy room of yours and out into the world proper.” His smile is the most brilliant you’ve seen it in a while. “The natural lighting suits you well. I can get a good look at your face like this—and how lovely you are.”

Kalim has no problem with what you like (he enjoys anime, manga, and games as much as the next guy!), but he thinks it’s a little sad that you spend most of your time inside. There’s so many amazing things to do and see in the world, and you’re going to miss out on all of it if you don’t venture out of your room.

He doesn’t let that thought get him down!! If you don’t want to see the world, then Kalim will just have to bring the world to you!! You’ll probably be reading a manga, watching an anime, or halfway through a level when Kalim will storm in with a feast, a band, or an entire zoo to amuse you with. He might also bring flowers or fabrics to spruce up your room and breathe new life into it.

At times, Kalim brings only himself to keep you company. He’ll feed you snacks as you read books or watch shows, and he’ll even serve as your gaming companion! (Kalim’s honestly not that great at playing, but it doesn’t bother him at all. What matters is that you both have fun, regardless of who wins and who loses!)

The itch to step out will hit him sooner or later. It usually manifests as extra restlessness, or the desire to do a little jig in an open space. Kalim will hold your hands tightly and, peering earnestly into your eyes, beg you to come join him for a trip outside. If you want, he can even take you for a magic carpet ride, soaring ad tumbling and freewheeling through an endless diamond sky!

“We can go anywhere, do anything! We can find the Cave of Wonders, or visit Atlantica! We can sing and dance until our voices don’t work and our feet hurt! There’s so much I want to see and to do with you...!” Kalim cries breathlessly. “The world’s out there, waiting for us. Let’s discover it together!!”

Malleus doesn’t claim to understand why you prefer holing up in your room to exploring what lies beyond it. He holds the opposite sentiments after so many years of being trapped inside his castle walls, longing for the freedom to roam over set, stoney confines. Still, he would be lying if he said he wasn’t curious about your hobbies.

Malleus isn’t familiar with the books or shows you indulge in (he’s more well-acquainted with laws, history, and traditional theater), so he’ll ask about them or sit with you to observe these new art mediums for himself. Because of his obscene height, it’s not uncommon for Malleus to be peering over your shoulder to read the same manga as you are, or for him to rest his chin on your head while he holds you against him during an anime session. (He actually gets REALLY invested in an anime that’s popular with young children—)

When it comes to gaming, well... Let’s just say it took you longer than was probably necessary to show him how to hold and how to operate his controller (and even then, his coordination is slow and sloppy). You can tell he’s trying his absolute best, so you cheer Malleus on and go easy on him—oh, and the triumphant delight on his face whenever he picks up a simple new mechanic... It just makes your heart flutter.

Malleus knows it’s not his place to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do with your free time, so he avoids imposing his will on you. He does, however, invite you to join him for his midnight walks to pay each gargoyle on campus a visit. It’s a subtle way to let you know that you’re in his mind and that he wants to spend time in your presence, but he won’t push for it if you’re uncomfortable.

“I will be taking my leave for my routine stroll. You are free to accompany me if you wish,” Malleus informs you, a hand resting on the doorframe—the gateway between your world and the outside. “... It can get rather lonely in the long hours of the night. I would love for nothing more than to be your solace in that darkness, if you would allow me to.”

It's hard to pick one of my fave photos from 2022, and I am so lucky to have worked with so many talented photographers this year. This photo is easily in my top 3. And a detail that I'm not sure if anyone noticed but Marisa added in the "Gilligan's Island" title screen on the TV, a nod to one of my touring burlesque numbers (inspired by Ginger from Gilligan's Island). And I knew I needed the perfect retro dress for this set, I hunted for 2 days around Montreal until I found this perfect dress for 7$ at a frippery. I adore this photo! This is camp.

TheAwkwardAnglophile’s Year in TV Shows: 2021

I had so much fun putting this together in 2020 that I decided to do it again, although I’m a little late in actually posting it. Oh well! This only includes shows that aired new content in 2021, or content that was new to me. Be warned: SPOILERS ABOUND! Here is the list in alphabetical order:

Behind the Attraction: I’m a Disney World fanatic, and was delighted to find this gem on Disney+ that went into the history and development of some of the most iconic rides ever.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: I MISS IT ALREADY. Their final season was so good, especially seeing Peraltiago as parents to adorable little Mac. But the series finale?? *chef’s kiss* I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything with THAT many callbacks crammed in. It was insane and chaotic and ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. One of the best finales ever! NINE NINE!

Call Me Kat: I’m going to go ahead and say this first: this show is nowhere near as good as Miranda, its British predecessor. But I have enjoyed it so far. I love Mayim Bialik’s quirky energy, which I’d missed since Big Bang Theory ended. All the characters are fun and interesting, and once they stopped trying to copy all of Miranda’s plots and came up with more original material, that’s when they really found their footing.

Derry Girls: An absolutely fascinating, hilarious surprise! I was so swept up in the culture and uniqueness of this show. I’ve never set foot in Ireland (although I would LOVE to), but I did go to high school in the ‘90s, so I appreciated the nostalgia.

Emily in Paris: Ok, I know. I KNOW. But it’s fun, colorful escapism for me, and I just really don’t care that’s it’s hated. Luc and Mindy are such fun characters, and Gabriel is GORGEOUS. Season 2 flowed really well, and I absolutely fell for Alfie.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: I enjoyed this so much more than I originally thought. I didn’t have much connection to Sam or Bucky from the movies, but through the medium of TV and the time for character development, I began to care for them. Probably my favorite scenes were when Sam and Bucky tossed around Cap’s shield outside the house, and our new Cap’s speech in the last episode. Oh, and of course, dancing Zemo!

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous: I really cannot say enough good things about this show! The animation is great, and the characters are fantastic. There is all the suspense, adventure, and feels you would expect from the movies. I hope there are more episodes to come!

Loki: Amazing, simply amazing. I loved Loki’s journey, and his dynamic with Mobius was pure gold. He Who Remains absolutely came in and stole the show in the last episode. Incredible performance. But I think my fave character is the TVA itself. What a brilliant aesthetic. I just wanted to roam around the TVA and explore, learning their systems. And, I’m also a little partial to it since I’ve been in its real-life location many times (the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta).

Lost in Space: STRESS. This show is pure stress, one high-stakes disaster after another, which obviously makes it interesting to watch. But STRESS. Their final season was probably not my favorite of the three, but they ended it well, and that’s all I can ask for.

Monsters At Work: Absolute marvelous perfection. Not kidding. You can tell how much care they put into crafting this. Wonderful callbacks, and I loved how they continued the Monsters Inc. story without having the focus completely on the main characters. We got to see a completely fresh perspective with wonderful new characters. Ben Feldman voicing our protagonist? Yes, please! I’ve hardly seen any buzz about this show, even when it first came out, and it’s SO worth the watch.

Motel Makeover: Don’t waste your time on this. It piqued my interest, this idea of renovating an entire retro motel, but the two designers are so obnoxious and their voices are nearly unbearable. That being said, I still ended up watching the whole dang thing, because I had to see the finished product.

Never Have I Ever: I really fell in love with this show! It was heartfelt and hilarious, and nearly every scene with Devi’s dad made me cry. I’m also 100% Team Ben.

Only Murders in the Building: Wow, this was so incredibly done. Steve Martin and Martin Short, are you kidding me? Obviously it was hilarious. I was completely sucked in. I should have been able to figure it out sooner than I did, but it’s not my strength. LOL I really love the opening title music and animation, too.

The Rookie: MY CHENFORD LOVING HEART!! They are my current top ship, and while I love all of the characters, Tim and Lucy are the main reasons I watch. I love them dearly, and it’s led me to writing more fanfic again and interacting with the wonderful fandom on here. Season 3 had some wonderful moments, and although season 4 hasn’t been the best, I’m still hopeful for more good content to come!

Star Trek: DIscovery: I feel like season 4 has been truly delivering. They have touched on grief, identity, belonging, mental health, in addition to all the action and adventure they normally have. There have been so many beautifully written lines that I lost count. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the season!

Star Trek: Lower Decks: So much fun. Just ridiculous amounts of fun. I love the core four, and my boy Tom Paris got to make an appearance, which was a delight!

Star Trek: Prodigy: I have been a Voyager fan literally since day one, and always loved the powerhouse that is Janeway, so having her back is wonderful. These new characters are intriguing, and the animation is GORGEOUS. Each episode just leaves me with loads more questions!

Supermarket Sweep: Always a fun, easy watch. I still have such a soft spot for the original, but Leslie Jones has grown on me a lot. Plus, there seem to be way more bonuses nowadays.

Superstore: They also had one of the best series finales ever! SIMMOSA! They got back together, and married, and it makes me happy even thinking about it now! Garrett’s final announcements over that montage was just perfection.

This Is Pop: A really interesting documentary diving into different topics in the music industry. Very enjoyable.

WandaVision: My FAVORITE Marvel thing EVER. It was a glorious TV viewing experience. I don’t even know how to fully put it into words. Everything about it was excellent. EXCELLENT. Plus, it gave us one of the beautiful lines I’ve ever heard uttered on TV, which I now have on a necklace, “What is grief, if not love persevering?”

What If...?: Out of the 4 Marvel shows I watched, this was my least favorite. But there were some good moments. The Captain Carter, Black Panther, and Thor episodes all stand out. But the Doctor Strange one? GEEZ, that was so heavy. That sat on me long after it aired.

Young Sheldon: Still overall, I love this show. However, it’s clearly starting to shift into the reality we were told about many times on TBBT, and I’m not sure exactly how I feel about it, or how they will actually play this out without losing some of the show’s best qualities. I’m also curious what happens with puberty hitting Sheldon and Missy, and the actors that play them. I did really like them bringing Howard back!

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: My heart! Season 2 took a lot of different turns, but I loved that! There were so many good episodes, and I was devastated when it was cancelled. Max hearing heart songs?! And as much as I love Simon, I was thrilled about Zomax getting back together. And then thankfully, we got Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, which was pure joy (and tears, a lot of tears). I guess that is the final ZEP (is it??), but it was a perfect way to close out a show that means so much to me, and was cancelled WAY too soon.
