Drav is a canadian beer brand. these cans are striking and unique in their use of minimalism and typography to create a retro feel through a combination of retro colour with the primary typefaces being a bold serif font: windsor. this is paired with a simple sans serif: suisse int'l which has been used in all caps for a contrast to the logo and provide the appearance of confidence though the all caps.
this has made me think about what i need to know about beer bottle labels and what information i must provide on labels to meet industry standards.

Population II – “Pourquoi qu’on dort pas” (Song Premiere)
Today I’m excited to bring everyone the latest single from three-piece rock band, Population II, called “Pourquoi qu’on dort pas.” On this electric new track, the band delivers a heavy, psychedelic rock-infused sound with feverish funk rhythms, a hint of jazz philosophy, a burst of early punk energy, and a love of minor scales that harkens back to the roots of heavy metal. I was able to catch up with the band for a brief interview below. The new track, “Pourquoi qu’on dort pas” is a bit more aggressive than we’ve seen in the past two singles, could you talk a bit about how the song came together? We find it’s a very nuanced track as the aggressive and dark intro and end leave room for passages of light in the verses. The song came through our usual way of improvising. Pierre-Luc and Tristan were grooving together on the verses and Seb stuck that intense intro and conclusion with wonderful bass Melodies. The title is a direct nod to “Why aren’t we sleeping,” from Kevin Ayers/Soft Machine. ”Pourquoi qu’on dort pas” translates to “Why aren’t we sleeping?” We took the riff from that and changed some notes and it started sounding like Black Sabbath. Our friend Colin Fisher then added some pretty tasty counter melodies and lead lines to the track. You’ve about how the band’s music is inspired by various musical scenes of the 60’s and 70’s. What is it that you find so appealing about the music from that era? We think it’s the organic nature of that music. Most of what inspires us are from German music from the late 60’s to 80’s, the Canterbury scene and various punk scenes. We want to continue to push the envelope and aren’t aiming at being a retro revival band but we love those past years scenes for its authenticity (that is still present to this day, but mostly in different forms than a live band). We want the album to sounds as much as us as possible so most of what you’re hearing on our records is us three playing in room and we sprinkle other layers on top. While these artistic decisions might not give us the trendiest overly produced pop banger it makes us who we are. Friends expressing themselves in a communal way. With the release of your sophomore album, Électrons libres du québec coming this Friday, what’s next for the band? Population II all over the world! we haven’t toured much in general these last years (haha). Another album and EP is already on the way. And mostly, make something new for us, everybody, to bring joy and hopefully inspire a few to pick up some instruments. Everyone can do it! --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/features/population-ii-pourquoi-quon-dort-pas-song-premiere/

Catherine J. “Cat” Grant Division Home Jerseys
Note: You do not need to look at these to read the story, I am just a big hockey nerd who decided to do this for fun. It is not important for the story.
Everything looks very wonky because I decided to draw in pen, but please imagine everything looks good and I know how to fill in colour properly. All (very) rough sketches included below:
Boston Banshees - [BOS]
[BOS] - I know these jerseys look like they belong to a recreational roller hockey team and not a professional ice hockey team, but I tried to base it on the photos of Silver Banshee's costume from the comics, and this is what happened.
DC Legends - [DCL]
[DCL] - I may want to change the colour from purple to a more Legends of Tomorrow colour scheme, but I'm not sure yet. Right now, I'm still laughing about naming the team the DC Legends. This jersey design is based on a University of Notre Dame (IN, USA) concept jersey I found on the internet.
Gotham Nightwings - [GNW]
[GNW] - This jersey is based on Nightwing's superhero suit from the comics and a little bit on the New Jersey Devils Jersey jersey. The team is very much based on the real life NHL team of the New Jersey Devils, so I thought it would be fun. (I also messed up by putting a line through the blue stripe on the torso, please ignore.)
Metropolis Metropolitans “Metros” - [MET]
[MET] - This jersey is so ugly. I'm planning to redesign it but I wanted to post this, so now this is what happened. The colour scheme is based on Superman's superhero suit if Superman's superhero suit was ugly, and The New York Rangers reverse retro jersey from the 2022-2023 season, which I actually really like. This design ended up looking like 1990s retro St. Louis Blues jersey, but that wasn't what I was thinking. The 'Honouring History' shoulder patch is a reference to the comic canon Metropolis Mammoths hockey team.
National City Caracals - [NCC]
[NCC] - This is the first design I made, and I tried to make a lot more, but eventually this is the one I chose. I tried to use the colour scheme of CatCo's logo and the pink cats that are in the CatCo offices. The logo is traced from the first design I found when I Googled "Caracal Logo" The design was probably based on something from the back of my mind, but I didn't look at any photo of a specific jersey for this design.
Québec Dinosaures - [DQC]
[DQC] - When I thought of this logo after naming the team, I knew I had to do a whole series of these drawings just so I had the excuse to show off the Dinosaur Fleur-de-lis. The jersey is based on the old Rimouski Océanic jerseys from the Sidney Crosby era (03-05). It also ended up looking like the American football team Seattle Seahawks colour scheme, but that's not what I was going for. The shoulder patch is the flag of Québec City.
These are the designs of the Grant Division, which I picture to act as the stand-in for the Metropolitan division in the real-life NHL. (I know National City is technically in California but for some reason I have always pictured it to be near DC in Maryland or something so that is where I put it. Sorry for the confusion.) If you have taken the time to read through this, I appreciate it.

Me trying to pose elegantly without getting a splinter
For my dad's birthday, we did a local wine tour. I decided to go for a vintage white wine themed look, since Québec mainly produces white wines for cold climate reasons. Also, I have clearly been looking at too many vintage magazines, as even my poses show it.

I painted a whole series of paintings in this style, when I first left the corporate marketing world, and started my life as a professional artist. It was the first time that I consciously painted an actual “series of paintings”. Now, of course, I do it all the time. The series didn’t have a name though, and it wasn’t until a couple of years later that I decided to call it THROUGH TIME. Above Zero has a retro 70s feel to it, and it reminds me of a colourful side mirror of a car. This piece is part of my Memorial Day Weekend 2020 sale: I’m taking 20% off all paintings that I created in 2016 and before, to make room for new works! 🧡❤️💜💙 #ClaireDesjardins #MemorialDayWeekendSale #ArtSale #ThroughTime #ThroughTimeSeries #Magenta #Pink #HotPink (at Gore (Québec)) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAm5rjJpX9O/?igshid=m532nt8oqf0a

Trainslation game
#TRAINSLATION GAME PROFESSIONAL#
Seeing my name in the credits for the first time was also quite something!Īfter a six-month pause as a horse-riding guide (my second passion after video games), I moved to Malaga, Spain, from almost one day to the other to fill a localization tester position left vacant by a former colleague from Québec. Those were truly memorable times, during which I learnt a lot, met really great people from all over the world and got the chance to further develop my linguistic skills as well as a good sense of methodology. My translation experience at was enough to land me a position as a game localization QA tester in Québec in 2009, where I worked for a year and a half. How did you transition from being an editor, to being a game translator? I will never be able to thank those guys enough for giving me that opportunity as it was really the door opener to my career. Basically, good linguistic skills and a good command of English were needed for this job. My job was to upload whole catalogues of retro games (I picked SEGA consoles) to their database, which meant taking screenshots, writing game descriptions and mining information in English for many of them. Playing them taught me a lot of vocabulary and basically helped me speak English at a more advanced level than what school required from me.Īs a result, I followed some English studies at university and took my first steps in the business in 2008 with an internship as a junior editor for the biggest French video games website,, where I was a junior editor on their editorial staff. Localization was indeed not as important in the late 1990s and early 2000s as it is today, and many games just had subtitles, even menus, in English only. They also played a major role in my learning of English (along with Metallica!), which might be worth noting for aspiring translators.
#TRAINSLATION GAME PROFESSIONAL#
I played video games for the first time when I was four years old (ah, sweet memories of Power Strike, Psycho Fox and Sonic on SEGA Master System), and they pretty much defined my whole professional life. 🙂 How did you become a Game Translator and Localizer? I’m also the founder and manager of a multilingual team of professional video game translators, Level Up Translation, which basically doubles the amount of tasks listed above. I spend my day typing, researching, thinking a lot, drinking liters of tea and answering e-mails. My job as a game translator consists of transposing the original experience of a game into my native language, that is, French. What do you do each day as a Video Game Translator? He explains what a translator does, how he got started in the job, and what it takes to succeed as a game localizer. Today I’m speaking with Damien Yoccoz, the founder of Level Up Translation in Basse-Normandie, France. Others took matters into their own hands and made “fan translations” to distribute to other players using dial-in bulletin-board systems (BBS).įortunately, game localization has become so affordable that publishers release each game in multiple languages so players around the world can enjoy their creations. Some players learned a second language like Japanese, solely so they could play rare unofficial imports. That is, unless the developers translate their game into a language you understand, using a painstaking process called localization.īefore the 1990s, if you didn’t speak the language, you simply couldn’t play the game. That means unless you learn Japanese, French, Mandarin, and a dozen other languages, you’ll miss out on thousands of awesome game experiences in your lifetime. Hundreds of new video games are created every year, but unfortunately, most are made by developers who speak a language you don’t. Damien Yoccoz: “Speaking two languages doesn’t make you a translator any more than having two hands makes you a pianist.” To read the others, visit Which game job is right for you?. The following article is just one of over 30+ interviews with professional game developers.
