Conceptualizing the Issue and Assessing Types of Action
The civic action issue I chose is the lack of affordable housing and homelessness because I think this is an issue very close to home, in places like San Francisco and Oakland. This is an important issue as it has an impact on people’s lives, their quality of living, and overall well-being.
When there is a lack of affordable housing, people end up on the streets because they can’t afford their rent. When neighborhoods are gentrified and made more expensive, those that were living their before end up with no home because they can’t afford the new rates. This is an issue that affects over a million people in the United States.
I think that in order to address this issue, cities need to create and ensure affordable housing, rather than making empty promises. When people’s lives are at risk, this is issue should clearly become a top priority. Some articles suggest that tax money that comes from the people that move into expensive housing can serve as funds in creating affordable housing.
On twitter, I am following @rethinkhomelessness, @naehomelessness, @londonbreed, @libbyschaaf, and @namiadvocacy because they will give me other perspectives on my issue, as well as update me on current news in my area, regarding my issue. I find it interesting that one of the tweets explains that in order to improve homelessness, we first must change our views or responses toward it.

#RethinkHomelessness
This is a video a social activist group created in Orlando Florida. The purpose of the video is to challenge idea’s of how people became homeless, or the type of life that they live. Each of these homeless people’s personal proclamations exists to stand out against a preexisting idea about homeless people. For example, a lot of them talk about their skills or their previous jobs to prove that these notions of homeless people being lazy are wrong. This shows us that the stereotypes these people experience as a part of the homeless community are factually wrong and hurtful. The subtext of this short film is that homeless people are still people.

Why Pope Francis Is The Man In Our Book
Tumblr media
Monday marked the day that Pope Francis commenced the building of showers around Rome for those experiencing homelessness to have a place to bathe, whereas before there were no options.
This is truly incredible. We always think of the need their is for food, however a need that is just as large is a place to clean up.
At the beginning of October the mission began when bishop Konrad Krajewski wanted to take a homeless man named Franco to dinner for his birthday. Franco said, “Father, I can’t go to the restaurant with you because I smell.”
Krajewski took him out to dinner regardless, celebrating his birthday. It was Franco who explained to the bishop what the biggest need for the homeless in Rome is. “Here no one starves to death, you can find a sandwich every day. But there is no place to use the toilet and wash.”
Action was immediately taken, and Monday November 17th work began to build the showers where they will be able to wash and change their underwear. And upon the invitation of the Pope’s Almoner, ten parishes in Rome in the neighborhoods most frequented by the homeless have already built showers which are available to them.
“It is not simple, because it is easier to make sandwiches than run a shower service,” said Krajewski. “We need volunteers, towels, underwear.”
This is an issue that all people who are experiencing homelessness find themselves facing. The lack of places to shower is a huge problem. Franco said, “You can always find some food in Rome. What is missing is places to wash.” Making a sandwich is definitely easier but building a place for people to bathe and change clothes in the long run will create so many possibilities. By providing showers they are helping these men and women have a chance to go into businesses and apply for work.
Love seeing the initiative Rome is taking to help people in such a simple but much needed way.
It is opening up a door to more opportunity.

"They buy it because they know I don't use drugs and I don't use alcohol," Etee said. "They know that what I do is drink coffee, drink tea, eat food and read my book. A lot of people feel that if you have it in your hand, you must be doing something constructive with yourself."
Eric greets pedestrians from his wheelchair Tuesday September 9, 2014, which he started using after he was shot in the head a year ago. He credits the Street Sheet for helping him stay alive as he receives no public assistance. Eric E-Tee, a longtime homeless man, has been selling the Street Sheet since it started twenty-five years ago in San Francisco, Calif.
Every day, he sits in his wheelchair outside Books Inc. on Van Ness Avenue with a stack of newspapers on his lap. He said he makes $10 to $20 a day, sometimes using the money to buy food and other times saving up for days to rent a hotel room for a night. He has many regular customers, some of whom buy the same issue again and again to lend their support. Read the full story here.

Inspiration#00167 – Rethink Homelessness
Great social project that will broaden your mind's horizons, expand your awareness, and inspire positive changes in general public,
         ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
"How can you impact homelessness? It starts with rethinking...
Since the recession began, the face of homelessness has been changing. From school children to the elderly, from the barely employed to the victims of abuse-- homelessness can affect anyone... ...unless we all come together to make a difference.  Impact Homelessness is an initiative of the Central Florida Regional Commission on Homelessness, dedicated to finding solutions to the problem of homelessness in our Central Florida communities."
Watch this powerful video about  homeless people in Orlando, Florida. No matter where you are it relates to any place and all people."

There's A Man Buying Signs From Homeless People And It's Pretty Great
For over 30 years now a man named Willie Baronet has been buying signs from homeless people on the street asking for money. An interesting method to helping someone in need, right?
Tumblr media

Willie does not proclaim to be an expert about the issue of homelessness, he is just a guy who would get nervous when he pulled up to street corners and someone would hold a sign asking for money. As he tells it, this began out of feeling uncomfortable and unsure how to respond when faced with someone asking him for money. What began as an awkward transaction has become a piece of art. He even admits that in his head he created stories for the people he says and why they were in this situation.
It is so common for us to assume how and why someone ended up where they did when the reality is that we have no idea what led someone to where they are.
While working toward his Master’s Degree in Arts Willie created a project called WE ARE ALL HOMELESS where he displayed the signs in a form of art and hoped to bring attention to the life behind the sign.
Baronet said, “The purpose of the project is to raise awareness about homelessness, and to change the preconceived ideas many people have about the homeless and their situations.”

Willie Baronet’s journey has continued to traveling across the country buying signs and hearing people’s stories.
His story of finding inspiration through these signs and the lives attached to them strikes such a chord with us at The Giving Keys because our founder, Caitlin Crosby, had her a-ha! moment after seeing a couple on the street holding a sign that said, “Ugly, Broke & Hungry”. It was after meeting them and hearing their story that she developed the mission of employing people transitioning out of homelessness.
——————————————–
Something so small, a sign, can bring so much change.
It can bring awareness to a need.
It can bring a new beginning.
Xoxo
