One day I’m going to write an essay about what ASMR used to be (back circa 2012, 2013) and what the proliferation of whisper/mouth sound channels and the exaggerated well-amplified quick-cut noises of restock TikToks means for people just trying to watch internet trend analysis videos without being catapulted into sensory hell (it means that as a person just trying to understand the world around her I am often involuntarily tossed into a nightmare machine created entirely from the worst sounds on god’s green earth)
But that essay is not materializing today because I’m too busy wondering if I am literally the only person who would like to go a round of fisticuffs with some of these “restock” people clanging their M&Ms and scent beads into glass jars that are then scraped against a marble countertop (I don’t deliberately seek out this content but I DO deliberately seek out videos examining the twin phenomenas of wasteful, showy consumerism and social media trends either originating from or being carried along by people using rage bait to make a buck on their Amazon storefronts, so somewhere along the line it IS kind of on me to keep experiencing it)
#internet trends#restocktok#seriously what the fuck is this#aesthetics and noises are turning the internet into mush

cleantok and restocktok are fascinating. 90% of the vids are influencers using an abundance of cleaning devices and detergents to "deep clean" their already spotless homes, and transferring already packaged items into clear acrylic/glass containers for "aesthetics". i had no idea there were so many useless gimmick devices for cleaning your house
#and scrub daddy seems to have a chokehold on the whole scene#i will defend putting dry goods like cereal and pasta into those 'aesthetic' containers tho#before we got the cats we had field mice come in every winter and those things are a life saver#as far as the mice are concerned those things are impenetrable force fields#also just reuse mason jars for organizing#you can put all sorts of things in them like pens you dont need 50 brand new plastic containers for this

One day I’ll get into how much I hate how cleantok/ restocktok has taken specific pieces used by the sustainability movement and turned it into an aesthetic all the while STILL USING SINGLE USE PLASTICS
